Is it 1992? The CW network is definitely bringing back Melrose Place

Every so often you’ll hear a story about some great television show that was kicked around Hollywood for years before being made. Or just as often, hear about something with so much potential and it never gets made at all. There is no shortage of good, fresh ideas in Hollywood. Mad Men is a perfect example – the pilot was written seven years before a network picked it up. HBO, Showtime, and pretty much everyone else passed on it, which didn’t mean it was a bad show – they were just stupid.

Considering all the great, creative, new projects that never get made, the CW network has decided to really push the envelope – by bringing back Melrose Place. Note the sarcasm.

Andrew Shue, call your agent.

A spokesperson for The CW confirms what has been buzzed about for months: The network is developing an update of Melrose Place. Details remain sketchy, but it’s believed Melrose 2.0 would launch next fall.

The move comes as The CW has enjoyed some measure of success with its 90210 reboot. Despite modest ratings, the show has brought attention to the struggling network at a time when it sorely needs it. The suits no doubt figure a Melrose rebirth will generate another round of mass hysteria. (And they’d be right!)

Earlier this month, Darren Star, who created both Melrose and 90210, admitted to TVGuide.com that a Melrose resurrection “would be a fun thing to do. I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened — if it can be put together in the right way.”

This is definitely a better idea than coming up with new, unique content. As Entertainment Weekly points out, it’s not like the CW is experiencing massive success with 90210; they’re just not sucking as badly as some of their other stuff.

Darren Star has gone on to do some pretty good stuff, like Sex & the City. If he were involved, maybe the show could be… less than totally terrible or something. That’s about as much as I can give it. And since it seems the CW is stuck in 1992, I guess this means my mom and I will need to have a raging fight about the propriety of Melrose Place every time I watch it, before I am eventually banned from the television and give her the silent treatment for three days.

Which shows the extent of the creative juices flowing through Hollywood nowadays. Why innovate and take a risk when you can remake and play it safe?

People who always re-live the past have no future.

The new 90210 is painfully predictable and I couldn’t get past the first two episodes without grimacing at the bad acting. Heaven forbid they still think they’re on to something…

Long live Marcia Cross! She was the best part of the original. 😛
