Rapper, musician and actor Heavy D – also known as Dwight Arrington Myers – has passed away at the age of 44. His cause of death is unknown. According to TMZ’s breaking reporting, someone at his Beverly Hills home called 911 this morning, and when medics arrived, Heavy D was conscious and alert. He was taken to the hospital and he was pronounced dead with an hour. He was Jamaican by birth, but he had been living in California for years.

L.A. Coroner Chief Craig Harvey confirmed to People Magazine: “I can confirm that he died today…He was transported from a residence in Beverly Hills and was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room. The cause of death is yet to be determined; we’re investigating it now. We do know that he last saw his doctor two weeks ago.” Sources say that the doctors don’t suspect foul play.

Many heard the news first when Grandmaster Flash tweeted, “I was just told Heavy D passed away.” Heavy D was still performing as a rapper – he had just worked the Michael Jackson tribute concert in Wales a few weeks ago – and as an actor… he appears in Tower Heist, which just came out this past weekend. You can see his IMDB page here. Our thoughts and prayers to his family. Poor guy.

Here’s the song that was one of his biggest hits in the 1990s, “Now That We Found Love”… I’ve always perfered “Nuttin’ But Love” so I’m including that too.

    Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved Heavy D! We Got Out Own Thang was my joint! And I loved the raps he did for Janet (Alright) and Michael (Jam) and his contribution to Don’t Cuss.

    So sad and so shocking.

One of the very few rappers I like and respect who never used obscenities in his songs.

I am in shock! I used to crush on the Heavyweight Luva back in the day. For a big guy, he had the smoothest dance moves and always dressed dapper. He was definitely one of the greatest rappers of the golden era of hip-hop. I feel really bad for his family – especially, his beloved daughter. Wow…

Soooo shocking and really really sad. Heavy was a pioneer in the rap game and quite the versatile talent but more importantly he was a really really really good dude. He’ll be deeply missed and his music & energy will live on!!!

R.I.P Heavy D. I still remember A different World Ep. he guest starred in back when I was a kid. I’ve been a fan since.

p.s. I am so glad that damn plastic outfit (see first video) is no longer in style, you know someone was high and on crack when they dreamed up that monstrosity.

  22. the original bellaluna says:

I am so sad right now. Tears down my cheeks. Give me a moment…

My (now ex) husband sang “Now That We Found Love” to me prior to our engagement. I don’t like my ex, but I still love the song.

44…How can he be dead? I HATE it when people I adore and/or are in my age group die.

    RIP, Heavy D.

  23. fabgrrl says:

Kind of sounds like a heart attack. RIP, Heavy D.

I LOVED that video (Now that We Found Love) so much in high school. But why don’t I remember the dude in the transparent raincoat?

Was that Chris Tucker in the second video?

    Thank you.

  28. Javagirl1 says:

Now That We Found Love was one of my favorite songs growing up. What I love about the video is it didn’t have to be sleazy like a lot of rap videos. And at the same time it doesn’t seem dated at all today. RIP

Really liked him, he seemed like such a nice guy too. Rest in Peace.

  30. Sunlily says:

RIP Heavy D. One of my favorite rappers growing up. He kept it clean and didn’t need to flaunt about cars, ho’s, and how many different chains he had.

I didn’t know it was a “thing” now to look at someone’s last tweet, but this happens to be his (according to MK @ Dlisted):

    “Be Inspired”

  37. Ally says:

Listening to my iPod on Shuffle today reminded me how great and soulful rap 90s rap was.

So sad he’s gone so young, and sad that there wasn’t room for a talent like that to sustain a high-level career for decades.

On a shallow note, Rebecca Gayheart is a fly girl in that second video.

    R.I.P. Heavy D

    My prayers to his family.

  51. Jover says:

RIP Heavy D;Second your comments 37; used to watch his vids on MTV (when mtv was worth watching); old school hip hop/rap is so much better than today’s lame uncreative stuff. When mtv got rid of fun hip hop in the early 90s for “gangsta” rap, then it was downhill. After 20 years his vids/songs are still fun to watch/listen to.
