Rapper, musician and actor Heavy D – also known as Dwight Arrington Myers – has passed away at the age of 44. His cause of death is unknown. According to TMZ’s breaking reporting, someone at his Beverly Hills home called 911 this morning, and when medics arrived, Heavy D was conscious and alert. He was taken to the hospital and he was pronounced dead with an hour. He was Jamaican by birth, but he had been living in California for years.
L.A. Coroner Chief Craig Harvey confirmed to People Magazine: “I can confirm that he died today…He was transported from a residence in Beverly Hills and was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room. The cause of death is yet to be determined; we’re investigating it now. We do know that he last saw his doctor two weeks ago.” Sources say that the doctors don’t suspect foul play.
Many heard the news first when Grandmaster Flash tweeted, “I was just told Heavy D passed away.” Heavy D was still performing as a rapper – he had just worked the Michael Jackson tribute concert in Wales a few weeks ago – and as an actor… he appears in Tower Heist, which just came out this past weekend. You can see his IMDB page here. Our thoughts and prayers to his family. Poor guy.
Here’s the song that was one of his biggest hits in the 1990s, “Now That We Found Love”… I’ve always perfered “Nuttin’ But Love” so I’m including that too.

Too damn young. RIP, Heavy D, you will be missed.
damn sad he was so young. how awful for his family.
Rest in peace Heavy D….he was truly an underrated artist. He did it all…he was a great rapper, dancer and actor. This makes me so sad. I extend my condolences to his family and friends, another one gone too soon.
“You’re on my mind and I wish you a peaceful journey”
He was so young! He will be missed!
Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved Heavy D! We Got Out Own Thang was my joint! And I loved the raps he did for Janet (Alright) and Michael (Jam) and his contribution to Don’t Cuss.
And I loved his acting – Livin’ Single, Boston Public…
RIP.
And Don’t Ya Know?, one of the earliest love raps.
So bummed.
So sad and so shocking.
One of the very few rappers I like and respect who never used obscenities in his songs.
A truly nice guy who put out good music.
“Don’t you know”…you’ll be truly missed…

Terrible 🙁
Sad news. I always liked Heavy D and the Boyz. Just got rid of my tape actually…
oh no, not “the overweight lover!” I adored him back in the day. RIP, Heav, you will be missed!
This is so unfortunate. RiP heavy!
Wow, I loved Heavy D. He seemed to be one of the coolest and nicest guys around. R.I.P.
I am in shock! I used to crush on the Heavyweight Luva back in the day. For a big guy, he had the smoothest dance moves and always dressed dapper. He was definitely one of the greatest rappers of the golden era of hip-hop. I feel really bad for his family – especially, his beloved daughter. Wow…
Wow, it feels weird. Just seen him in Tower Heist and SVU.
RIP, Heavy D.
i loveeeeeeed him growing up.
damn shame. rip.
Im so sad…my husband was one of his biggest fans, I remember stealing his Heavy D tapes back in the day…44 years old, damn.
Wow, so sad. I loved him as a child.
R.I.P.
This one…is a shock. Was is a few years ago that he death announcement was spreading around the web, which turned out to be fake. Well, I saw it confirmed on People and knew this one was real. Damn. Thoughts and prayes go out to his family.
Soooo shocking and really really sad. Heavy was a pioneer in the rap game and quite the versatile talent but more importantly he was a really really really good dude. He’ll be deeply missed and his music & energy will live on!!!
R.I.P Heavy D. I still remember A different World Ep. he guest starred in back when I was a kid. I’ve been a fan since.
p.s. I am so glad that damn plastic outfit (see first video) is no longer in style, you know someone was high and on crack when they dreamed up that monstrosity.
wow. rip heavy d.
I am so sad right now. Tears down my cheeks. Give me a moment…
My (now ex) husband sang “Now That We Found Love” to me prior to our engagement. I don’t like my ex, but I still love the song.
44…How can he be dead? I HATE it when people I adore and/or are in my age group die.
RIP, Heavy D.
Kind of sounds like a heart attack. RIP, Heavy D.
I LOVED that video (Now that We Found Love) so much in high school. But why don’t I remember the dude in the transparent raincoat?
Was that Chris Tucker in the second video?
R.I.P ” In his songs he used to call himself the overweight lover” I miss you Heavy D, you brought fun and class to hip-hop!
RIP Heavy D!! Loved him!!!
Too soon to go!We’ll miss you Heavy D. . . RIP
My goodness, Andy Rooney if you ever seen or listen to his comments he was a strait no nonsense shooter. Joe Frazier, me and my dad use to watch his boxing matches together when I was younger. Heavy D, I still today enjoy and dance to his music. To all may peace be with you at your final rest and toward your journey to come.
Thank you.
Now That We Found Love was one of my favorite songs growing up. What I love about the video is it didn’t have to be sleazy like a lot of rap videos. And at the same time it doesn’t seem dated at all today. RIP
Really liked him, he seemed like such a nice guy too. Rest in Peace.
RIP Heavy D. One of my favorite rappers growing up. He kept it clean and didn’t need to flaunt about cars, ho’s, and how many different chains he had.

My favourite song of him was ‘Is It Good To you’.

It always put a smile on my face and put me in a good flirty mood.
Again Rest In Paradise brother and thanks again for your lovely songs and that happy spirit of yours !.
RIP Heavy D. You were an integral part of my teenage years.
I’m a drink a sprite tomorrow in your honor, just cause I liked that commercial so much.
Rest in peace sweet Heavy D. You made good music with good messages. You bought people happiness through your music and living a positive life.
Time to put them roller skates on bring out the cassette tapes and walkman and hit the street skating to some Heavy D & the Boyz.
Must say that his energy and smile will be missed. RIP Dwight. Such a sad day.
Wow! A shock..sounds like a heart attack or stroke or blood clot of some kind. So sad..:-(
I didn’t know it was a “thing” now to look at someone’s last tweet, but this happens to be his (according to MK @ Dlisted):
“Be Inspired”
Listening to my iPod on Shuffle today reminded me how great and soulful rap 90s rap was.
So sad he’s gone so young, and sad that there wasn’t room for a talent like that to sustain a high-level career for decades.
On a shallow note, Rebecca Gayheart is a fly girl in that second video.
R.I.P. Heavy D
Only 44, that’s so sad and unexpected. My heart goes out to his loved ones.
Rest in peace.
RIP Don Gorgon… gwaan easayyy 🙁
Sad and at such a young age. He would be missed.
R.I.P
Just recovering from Joe Frazier; now Heavy D. Miss you. RIP.
Damn! What a way to bum out my morning. 🙁
I’d like to believe that this death has absolutely nothing to do with drugs, please oh please.
Now who will be up in the limousine with Salt & Pepa???
He was pretty young. So tragic. RIP!
RIP – Heavy D.
YOu will be sorely missed!

Rest in Peace. This is beyond sad. My heart is Heavy 🙁
Loved Heavy D! I’m so sad, my condolences to his family. The overweight lover, I read that in the comments and I chuckled, yeah, he was the overweight lover, loved his videos and songs.
One of my favorite rappers! My dad liked him too because he kept it clean. I remember learning the dance from the “We Got Our Own Thang” video with my cousins!
My prayers got out to his family and love ones.
My prayers to his family.
RIP Heavy D;Second your comments 37; used to watch his vids on MTV (when mtv was worth watching); old school hip hop/rap is so much better than today’s lame uncreative stuff. When mtv got rid of fun hip hop in the early 90s for “gangsta” rap, then it was downhill. After 20 years his vids/songs are still fun to watch/listen to.
