Jessica Simpson negotiating a postpartum Weight Watchers endorsement?

Before Jessica Simpson actually got inseminated by her K-Fed, there were rumors for months that she was possibly knocked up. Such is the cross to bear for every large-breasted girl who gains weight in her mid-section – people always think we’re pregnant when really we’ve just been eating potato chips and watching The Closer all weekend (cough). What was my point? Ah, yes: Jessica was a bit heavier before she even got pregnant. I think she still looked lovely, and what I always say about her is that people wouldn’t even notice when she gains weight if she just consistently dressed for her body type, which is a short, petite hourglass. Jessica always stuffs herself into unflattering, too-small dresses OR wears oversized, unflattering muumuus. Now that Jess is preggo, not much has changed, honestly. She’s still wearing clothes she shouldn’t, but no one is yelling about it because hey, she’s pregnant and maybe she’s just trying to be comfortable.

So Jessica is already thinking about what happens after she gives birth. She’s apparently thinking about how hard it’s going to be for her to lose the baby weight – so as a potential stop-gap for endless postpartum tabloid covers (“Jessica’s baby weight gain ends engagement!” etc), Jess is in negotiations to get a Weight Watchers endorsement deal.

Jessica Simpson won’t give birth until next spring, but she’s already planning her postbaby slimdown!

The mom-to-be, 31, is in talks with Weight Watchers for a $4 million deal to shed pregnancy pounds, Us Weekly has exclusively learned.

Simpson — engaged to ex-NFL star Eric Johnson — had initially intended to sign with the company to lose weight she had gained over the past few years.

“But then she got pregnant,” says the source. “So this was the perfect compromise.”

Under the contract, Simpson would have one year to use the point-counting program to “lose a signficant amount of weight,” says the insider.

She’s then show off her results in ads for the company — much like current spokeswoman Jennifer Hudson.

Despite the deal, Simpson isn’t letting her weight gain get her down. “I’m bigger than I’ve ever been,” she recently told Us. “But I want to show off my bump!”

[From Us Weekly]

Part of me thinks that this is a good idea, and that Jessica is the kind of person that needs outside motivation, someone looking over her shoulder to help her out. Another part of me thinks it’s gross to negotiate a contract for weight loss while you’re still pregnant – it speaks to screwed up priorities, I think. Just chill out at home, enjoy being a first-time mom, enjoy the baby and don’t get all stressed out about the weight loss, for the love of God.

Also: does anyone think this is an implicit renunciation of The Tracy Anderson Method? You know Jessica was training with Anderson for months before she got pregnant, and she hardly lost any weight (she might have been more toned, though). It’s like Jessica is acknowledging that she shouldn’t do the fancy, expensive trainer, she should do the more “middle of the road” Weight Watchers.

she could easily lose 200 pounds right off the bat by dumping k-fed-the-sequel.

A better idea Would be for weight watchers to give free classes to the millions of women on low or no incomes who would dearly love to attend and loose weight but who unfortunately
cannot afford to? Will they do that? No! Instead the cost of the classes will continue to rise to subsidise the ‘stars’ leaving the people that need help the most without….again! And on top of that governments scream obesity crisis. If everybody had the financial security of the ‘stars’ then there wouldn’t be an obesity crisis and therefore no need for this hype.

The moral of the tale then we guess is that if your not prepared to put your money where your mouth is and help those who most need it then don’t rub peoples faces in what they can’t or will struggle to afford!

      THIS.

      Very good post!!! (CLAPPING)

    • REDSLIP says:

Agreed – I lost 65 pounds with Weight Watchers, but that was three years ago and the whole plan was very different then. One of the reasons I chose that route to go for losing weight was because it wasn’t a fad diet that you see lots of celebrities doing.

Luckily I’ve maintained my loss, so I don’t have to pay to be a member any more, but if I was at the beginning of my journey Jessica Simpson would be a turn-off to starting. She’s just not relatable. It would have been better if she had “revealed” herself to have lost weight using WW after the fact rather than brokering a deal before she even gives birth.

A family member of mine who couldn’t drop the weight after her second baby registered herself on Weight Watchers online. She has to fill in what she eats and then the programme calculates what her intake is. She exercised too (soccer, she loves it) and after a month she lost 7 kilos or so. She feels that if she has to fill what she eats daily, she recognizes her faults and has to try her best to stick to healthy food (every now and then she eats a measured amount of unhealthy foods)There’s also lots of advice about their point system so you know what you’re allowed to eat so maybe that helps for you too? And it’s free, that was a bonus point for her.

My former boss went to WW-meetings and due to her hectic life she couldn’t keep her normal weight sometimes and ended up paying a lot and it was frustrating. I feel like you shouldn’t be punished financially for not keeping your weight at the desired level.

There are lots of sites/blogs who help people lose weight and gives lots of tips, recipes, personal stories etc…
Also it’s worth checking out what your community has to offer. You would be surprised what organisations you could find that supports your idea. WW isn’t the only organisation on the planet that helps people lose weight, it’s just one of the more famous ones =).

EDIT: I try to only shop at Aldi, Lidl or if I have to at Tesco’s. Lots of fruit, nuts and veggies at low prices.

    • anyhoo says:

Weight watchers isn’t that expensive. If you choose the online version, it’s only $30 (in Canada anyway). The other option, where you go to meetings and meet with “counsellors” is about $60.

If you’re overweight, you are probably overspending that amount of money per month on junk food anyway.

      • truthful says:

if you are low income and overweight–you need to learn “how to choose better meal options”–which is what WW is known for right???

The clients I work with can’t afford to add another bill or payment to their budget–in this economy, $30.00 is for gasoline to get back and forth to their low income paying job.

They’d rather pay someone that is already rich–than help avoid obesity worldwide, who would buy the medications? if the world were slim and healthier.

        vicious cycle of greed

      • Bodhi says:

“If you’re overweight, you are probably overspending that amount of money per month on junk food anyway.”

Not necessarily. There are many places in inner cities & rural areas where the only option for food of any kind is the unhealthy stuff. If there are no fresh healthy food options where you live then you are going to end up eating the junk that is the only this available. It doesn’t help that fresh healthy stuff is more expensive than the processed crap. If you have little to no money to spend on food, then you are probably going to chose the crap that you can afford. There is a term for this: food desert.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_desert

Anyway, I was overweight when I got pregnant, gained about 30 lbs & am now having a hell of a time losing the extra poundage. I was doing well for a little while, but I only lost about 5 lbs so I got discouraged & fell off the diet & exercise wagon. It didn’t help that it is now cold & rainy where I live so my daily walks with my son are pretty miserable now :/

      • Intercontinential says:

@Truthful: Agreed. We work with lots of people who are trying to survive on or well below the poverty line and would love the chance to do something like weight watchers not necessarily just to be slimmer but for their overall health and do the best they can for their families in general.

        @NM9005; @Redslip and @Anyhoo – thanks for your comments peeps 🙂

  6. NM9005 says:

I’m shallow like that, if I would ever wound up pregnant I would be stressing every day over weight gain because I’m quite curvy in nature and it’s easy for me to tone up but not to visibly see me slim down. So yeah, probably the only time I can relate on some level to JSimp. Plus for a celeb it’s even harder because the tabs and blogs will make mention of her tummy if it’s still there after three months. They always say a pregnancy takes 9 months and you need minimum 9 months to get back in shape but when you’re not in shape after three months, they really go out of their way to highlight it. They always try to spin it as if they don’t mean it in a derogatory way but it’s clear that they expect the women to be pin thin again after a month or so (even strong independent women like Portman, Pink get pushed in that corner for it). Otherwise they would just write about the celeb without mentioning the tummy.

  7. I.want.shoes says:

Why doesn’t she just lose weight quietly and out of the spotlight, the way millions of women do after giving birth? I guess she needs the extra money, with that dude of hers not making much of an effort to get a job.

  8. MAMAKOWALSKA says:

If losing weight is hard for a lady before she has a baby……guess what……..it will be even HARDER after she’s popped one out!!!

I think it’s normal for a woman to worry about what she will look like after 9 months + of wild gluttony…..yes, I was such a wild glutton, so I know of what I speak!!!

I think having a plan for after WILL ALLOW HER to enjoy eating as much as she likes during her pregnancy…..

I think poor Jess will end up like I did, BIG AS A HOUSE postpartum!!!

I’m sure if I had 4 mil waiting I would have lost it in 1 year instead of 4!!!

She’s a business woman, and if she doesn’t loose the weight in 1 year she’ll manage to collect 4 million for a book about being your own sexy heavier self:)

    • Bodhi says:

Same here!! If I could afford a trainer & a personal chef, or hell, even a gym membership, maybe I wouldn’t still be so damn big! GAH! It really is easier said than done sometimes…

      • Original Tiffany says:

Bodhi, while I agree with you on the easier with money, trainers, etc. It can be done. I gained 75 pounds with both pregnancies and lost it all both times. In fact, I found out I was preggo with #2 the day I got to goal weight and cried:)
Then I got hypothyroidism and had to lose 90 pounds. Exercise and good eating, no drugs, no surgery. I always gave myself at least 9 months to get the weight off, 9 months to get it on, nine to take it off. You’ll get there!

  9. REDSLIP says:

I’m really disappointed by this choice, and I think that Weight Watchers policies were better when they focused on the “average” person (mostly the average woman). It goes against what I thought were values held by Weight Watchers in general. A few years ago Jenny McCarthy lost her baby weight with Weight Watchers and offered herself to them as a spokesperson – and they denied her (except for a cover of one magazine) because they said they wanted average people to be able to relate to the program.

Why not ask Tina Fey to be a spokesperson? She lost weight years ago with WW and kept it off and is a lot more likely to be relatable than Jessica Simpson – and she’s a testament to the program’s success. Jessica Simpson is kind of an embarrassing spokesperson…

  10. Mia says:

I think Jessica Simpson would be a horrible spokesperson. I have total faith that she could lose the weight, but she would do a total Kirstie Alley and gain it ALL back and then some probably. If I were to join a weight loss service, I would want to see results that last.

  11. really says:

    Love love love love her!

  12. Happy21 says:

I don’t have an opinion one way or another or whether she would be a good spokesperson. I am a fan. I like her. I do think though that for her weight is a battle. Its not something that she doesn’t have to work at. She has to work her ass off to get the body she wants so I think its likely she would in fact be like Kirstie Alley and gain it back.

However, I don’t think she should be even considering a deal with WW because who knows how her delivery will be, how much weight she will actually gain, how difficult she’ll find it having a baby or even if she will have PPD. I don’t think this should even be considered until after the baby is born.

  13. Tiffany says:

The reason that the Tracy Anderson method and why Weight Watchers will not work for her in the future is because……Jess will not give up the booze which leads to the overeating.

  14. Snowpea says:

Gosh this whole ‘woe is me’ weight thing shits me to tears.

The basic equation around weight loss is: energy in = energy out. That’s all. Eat healthily, go for a walk every day.

Having said that, America is notorious for a junk food culture that defies belief and coupled with enormous servings in restaurants, it appears Americans are in the middle of an obesity epidemic.

I have friends that have come back from the States and they have been flabbergasted by the sort of crap you can buy in supermarkets. Cheese in a can, cream in a can, peanut butter and jam in a jar, creamy dressing on everything. I mean, WTF? Cheese in a can? Why don’t people just buy a big piece of triple cream brie and eat with some lovely crackers?

Here in Australia we have a whole nation of fatties that can probably be attributed to a few things, namely too much soft drink plus sedentary lifestyles. But thank god we don’t have that kind of hideous hillbilly food.

Ive got two kids and with my second I went up to 100 kgs (I think thats about 200 pounds) and I’m only 5 foot 4. I lost about 40 kilos in six months by following a low fat diet and walking every day.

Yes, its fricken hard work but so what? All these excuses for being obese are just smokescreens for lazy people.
