Rooney Mara in black Prabal Gurung in NYC: unflattering and try-hard?

Thank you, thank you, thank all of you who agreed with me about Rooney Mara in yesterday’s post. She’s a smug one, and she thinks it’s fine to trash-talk her early jobs now that she’s a huge movie star. Well, I know one thing – she’s not going to get very far as a fashion girl. After Rooney’s goth-bridal Givenchy gown to the London premiere of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Rooney is now giving us full-on goth at the New York City premiere. Rooney wore this Prabal Gurung Spring 2012 dress which… I dislike. I don’t hate it passionately, and I think it could be interesting on a different woman. But on Rooney, it just feels like a costume, and like she’s trying so hard to be “dark.” Plus, will you hate me if I say that I don’t think Rooney really has the figure to successfully pull off this dress? Not only does she remind me of Gwyneth Paltrow intellectually, but her boxy figure reminds me of Goop too. Goop would try to pull off this dress. Goop would fail as well. Rooney’s hair looks slightly better, though. No bangs. What’s with her expression in all of these photos, though?

As for the other “stars” on the red carpet – Daniel Craig was there, looking delicious. I’ve been sad that Rachel Weisz hasn’t come to any of these premieres – I was looking forward to seeing them walk a red carpet together. Instead, Daniel posed with his arm around Rooney a lot of the time, and then he got to see Robin Wright. I like Robin’s dress, although it’s a bit boring. I still don’t like that choppy haircut, though.

She is too thin for my taste.

    • jess says:

i remember reading an article that she had to basically starve herself for this role, as lisbeth salander is very very thin. maybe she’s not all the way back to her original weight yet

      • jay says:

I also feel like she doesn’t want to get her weight back for the usual hollywood reasons as well as sequel possibilities. If the flick does well, they’ll want to get the next one out asap.

  2. Bite me says:

    Robin is hot

  3. gillie says:

Ouch, that dress is ten shades of wrong. It’s like the sartorial equivalent of a reverse mullet.

    • T.C. says:

LOL, you are so right. I was trying to figure out what the hell she was wearing. Do not get these cut-out dresses her stylist is in love with. It’s almost the same as the white goth bridal dress with the cut-outs. Who keeps telling her that they look good on her? Nice face but no on the clothes.

      • tooey says:

David Fincher is a great director but a shitty stylist. I completely believe that he’s Professor Higgins to her Eliza Doolittle as Kaiser mentioned in an earlier post. He’s picking these ugly dresses.

  4. Aria says:

Love Robin dress and hair! She’s so beautiful! Rooney’s ruining TGWTDT! I loved the swedish version but I won’t waste time watching this remake. I don’t see the point.

  5. Girl says:

Wow. That dress is VERY not good on her. She looks uncomfortable too. Like she knows it was a bad idea and is trying to slink out of it? Or maybe that is het idea of posing. I don’t know. The stylist should be fired. Or not because she sounds like an asshole. It makes sense for her to look like one.

  6. Hautie says:

If you are going to wear a dress that revealing. You better learn how to own it.

    Stand up straight.

Put your shoulders back. And act like you love the dress.

But please put on a dang pair of hose if you have ugly legs. And if you are going to wear peep toe pumps. Get a pedicure!

This girl needs some lessons from RuPaul, on how to walk a red carpet.

    • L says:

      THIS.

Seriously-stand up straight! And what IS it with this girl and wearing dresses that are cut out on the sides? They are NOT edgy. They are hideous.

  7. truthSF says:

Ugh, she just got nominated for a GG for this movie.

    • normades says:

      Yup! hahahaha!

(well, at least you got your Fassie love!)

    • joxjooze says:

      O.o ..what a joke!
      I was like
Glenn Close, Meryl Streep, Viola Davis, Rooney Mara, Tilda Swin…- WTF ?!
not that I care about the globes so much it’s just, I don’t get the fuss over her.

  8. anne_000 says:

When will these celebs learn that just cuz it might look good on a 6-foot, stick-thin model with loads of dramatic makeup on, that doesn’t mean it’ll look good on themselves.

  9. Marjalane says:

For someone with as much “I’m better than you” attitude as Rooney Mara, she’s looking like a poor mans Megan Fox in that dress.

  10. Anguishedcorn says:

I think her face is quite gorgeous, and the brighter make-up really works well for her. I also think her hair is great w/o the bangs. And those shoes… I covet them. But the dress has way too much going on and does nothing for her.

  11. Eve says:

I read yesterday’s post…didn’t feel like commenting on her stupid quotes because it’s much too soon to even care about her, honestly.

But I remember thinking “She’s already *THAT* insufferable?”.

    • Meadowlark says:

My thoughts exactly. Although, I’m wondering now how little it takes for me to dislike a celeb. It really is too early to care but I’m getting such a GOOP-y vibe from this one!

  12. janie says:

i am always suspicious when starts start talking about how much they did for a role to get into character. ie the nipple piercing. always sounds like an oscar campaign.

  13. Ivy says:

I was okay with the top of the dress but when I scrolled down to the bottom: ugh! Love the shoes though…

  14. Claire says:

How can you say that? How can you say she’s ruining it, or that she doesn’t deserve a nomination ? You haven’t even seen the freakin’ movie! which looks amazing . As she does in it.

And the swedish versions were not good, just plain.

    • normades says:

Agreed. There was so much hate yesterday for this girl it was just kinda stupid. Those who have ACTUALLY seen the film say she is amazing in it and she could be this years break out star. Then you will really hate her (ha ha).

And fashion wise, what is usually considered “ugly” to many people is often super fashion-forward to those in the business. I love this black dress and the white gown wasn’t so bad either.

She is dressing up kinda goth to be in character and drum up publicity for the movie…and it’s working. Once the movie comes out she will dress more feminine.

(OK I’m defending this chick for the moment cause I like going against the grain, I might hate her next month 🙂

  15. RooneyFan says:

I love the dress. I love Rooney. I rather have someone who is smart then the half twits that run around Hollywood. Also remember her age, she probably did SUV when she was 11. Too watch it now (even though I was a big fan back in the day) is painful.

    • Lorraine says:

She did it when she was 21 or 22 far from 11. Also, the hate comes the conceited and ungrateful things she said about her former employers. We have all had jobs that were nail biting but to bad mouth them publicly especially in an industry when you can easily see those faces again, is a bad idea and unprofessional.

  16. Hanna says:

She’s all bones. That awful dress just showed it.

  17. Rose says:

i don’t mind the dress but she’s not really selling it, the way she stands makes her look almost naked or embarrassed. odd.

  18. The Original Denise says:

Robin looks great! Glad she extricated herself from Sean Penn. I wanted to like Loony Rooney, but it is not going to happen.

  19. Zombie Nurse says:

As TLo would say, “Girl, that is not your dress.”

  20. Khalesi says:

I can’t judge her performance in the film because I have yet to see it, but as for her sartorial choices– someone like Diane Kruger might be better suited to pull off such a dress.

  21. k says:

I wonder if Robin’s hairstyle is for a film role.

  22. ladybert62 says:

She looks good in black but I hate that dress. I also hate her slicked back hair.

Finbally, Daniel Craig looks awful with that “I am trying to grow hair on my face” stuff. Why do men do this – so many of them have wonderful faces and they insist on covering it up with hair (are you listening Gerard Butler?)

  23. mia135 says:

I love Rooney’s dress and makeup. Beautiful, sexy gothic chic. She looks fab.

  24. Kat says:

Yuck. The mesh inserts look like mosquito netting.

    She needs to:

    A) Get a stylist who isn’t legally blind
    B) Stop being an ice queen
    C) Start showing some gratitude for the career she has and the opportunities afforded her.

Seriously, I am starting to dislike this person more than La Cracken and Goopy combined. And that’s a lot.

  25. bluhare says:

Now that Melissa Rivers is dating the porn honcho, there was a photo of him at some porn convention with two of his “stars”. One of them had on something that reminds me a lot of this. And I didn’t like that one either.

  26. anti says:

love this dress. she is beautiful…has crazy eyes though 🙁

  27. Victoria says:

I really don’t see where Rooney has proven her intelligence at all. She comes from a wealthy family so she should be able to string a coherent sentence together with a few fifty dollar words. She seems like a poser to me and extra “try hard”. Color me not impressed. When you are Ronan Farrow or kids who graduate from college at 15, then we’ll talk. Until then, she is average like the majority of us.

And being super fashion forward is not an excuse to make ugly shit. High fashion can be and often is ugly until it’s translated into a more RTW attire.

So far her acting has not astounded me so people getting upset because of the “hate” can have a seat. I will wait for the bootleg version to come out. I don’t buy them, but my cousin does and I’ll watch it then. In that aspect I am reserving judgement. But I hate when they try shove people down our throats as ingenues. They did that with Kate Hudson when she was Penny Lane, and I was completely underwhelmed. I like her well enough, but she was not Julia Roberts Steel Magnolias era okay? And neither is Mara. You know who is? Carey Mulligan and Michelle Williams in her hey day. I mean she went from Dawson’s to indie awesomeness.

  28. Beatrix says:

That is a spectacularly gorgeous and artistically innovative dress. She looks fantastic in it.

    • tripmom says:

THANK YOU! I love the dress, love her, and love her in it. I think it takes someone with her kind of figure to pull it off, because if a curvier girl wore it, it could look skanky.

I don’t get the hate for her, and feel like the comments she’s made are simply straightforward and honest, NOT snotty at all. I feel like people have simply made up their minds not to like her and are grabbing at straws trying to defend it. So weird.

Here’s where I feel totally ok in picking on her: WHY DON’T YOUR SHOES FIT? This is SUCH a pet peeve of mine. Why are you paying for a stylist’s services when they are insisting you wear borrowed shoes that are two sizes too big? I am so sick of seeing starlets prance down a red carpet with a one inch gap between their foot and the heel of their shoe. It looks so cheap and stupid. I know it’s petty, but I really hate it.

      • Lorraine says:

Do you know anything about Hollywood and how it works? This is an industry where what you say can have negative effects on your career. You can end up working with those same people who you bad mouthed and they can have the last say in whether or not you get the job. So you saying people are pulling at straws is ridiculous and goes to show how you conduct yourself professionally. The girl looks good, yes. The attitude, not so much!

  29. Julie says:

    Love Robin and her look.

  30. T.C. says:

Apart from the fail dress, she still looks awkward with Daniel Craig. They look like father and daughter with him patting her shoulder. I’m sure they will be good in the movie as lovers just looks eeeky on the red carpet. His new wife is not showing up because they need to sell the lisbeth and blomkvist sex relationship for the red carpet. That doesn’t work if you have your more age appropriate wife hanging in the background.

  31. Reece says:

“She’s a smug one, and she thinks it’s fine to trash-talk her early jobs now that she’s a huge movie star”
Bit much to call her a huge movie star atm. One big movie does not a star make. If she’s still up at this level in 5-10 yrs then we can talk.

I do like that dress. I do! I agree you need more curves to pull it off well.
Love Robins dress! I keep staring at it.

  32. buckley says:

I love the dress and I love Rooney.
Can’t wait to see her Lisbeth.

  33. marie says:

Mara Rooney, the elfin alien, with a bad attitude. She is trying too hard and doesn’t have the figure to pull off that dress. She has a cold and hard demeanor, too. She looks like she wants to pull out a gun a shoot everyone.

  34. madpoe says:

    Hello Carrie Ann Moss 2.

  35. Jover says:

I agree victoria; funny, no one has commented on her letterman appearance last nite; she’s too thin, was subdued, not very animated didn’t display much personality, and it seemed like David was straining to draw responses from her. Her quiet mannered tone isn’t artistic, it’s just being a faux poser. I know one interview isn’t enough, but i wasn’t impressed at all.

  36. danielle says:

She sounds like a pill, but I thought she looked crazy gorgeous in this dress – reminded me of Jennifer Connoly.

  37. Evelyn says:

I think she’s a poor dresser and as smug as the day is long.
And who can hate on SVU!

  38. Lex says:

I hate how she bends her left knee into her body. She also did that in the Allure photo you showed yesterday. I saw her on David Letterman yesterday, she wasn’t downright annoying, rude or trying too hard but I found myself not liking her at all.

  39. Feebee says:

Sorry, have to take issue with ‘huge movie star’. She may be starring in a potentially huge movie but if it tanks at the box office, Daniel Craig will probably be unscathed, Ms Mara, not so much. She’ll still get work, perhaps even still be called a movie star but you have to earn ‘huge’.

uh oh, were you being sarcastic?

  40. Brenda says:

I really want to go see this movie. I read the book and saw the Swedish film, which was awesome and now I want to see this version. I do have to say that Rooney just gets on my nerves, she was just some actress before she was chosen for this role. Now she acts like she is God’s gift to the world. Uh NO!!! We shall see how great of an actor she is when the movie comes out.

  41. tali says:

This dress would be breathtaking on Charlize Theron, Diane Kruger, or Zoe Saldana but it just isn’t working for her at all!

  42. ruby says:

Ugh, Rooney. I dislike her name. She TRIES TOO HARD. Everything about her is unattractive. I dislike her face (what’s that look she’s trying to give us ? Wide eyes and bored look ? It looks more like deer in the headlights to me, vacant somehow). The dress doesn’t suit her, and her legs look weird.

I love Robin Wright though, amazing woman. I just wish she’d grow her hair out and she would be perfect.

  43. bellyache says:

Am I the only one who’s bothered by the fact that her shoes don’t quite fit?

  44. deb says:

are you sure she’s a girl?

    she’s a real drag

she just takes herself sooo seriously

    its a movie

and not even a good remake

    enough already
