Sandra Bullock in an Alexander McQueen suit: too shiny & cheap-looking?

These are photos from the premiere of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, that film where Tom Hanks plays a father who died in the World Trade towers on 9/11 and Sandra Bullock is the widow raising a young, precocious son who has a mysterious key that unlocks something in NYC. Let’s get through the superficial stuff first – Sandra Bullock is wearing Alexander McQueen, and… I really don’t like the execution of this. I love the idea of Sandy in a smart, well-designed suit, but the shiny silk/satin (?) fabric is pretty awful, and the suit ends up looking really cheap on her. I also have a problem with Bullock’s styling – the flat-ironed hair looks dated, and she paired her shiny black suit with a flesh-colored camisole that is playing tricks on my eyes. Also: Sandra looks like she got some new boobs. I don’t like saying that, but look at them. She’s never been that well-endowed.

Should we talk about Tom Hanks? Well, at least he’s aging naturally. I get tired of men who look as nipped and tucked as the ladies, but I want to force Tom to get some sleep and use some night cream. Rita looks good, though.

Viola Davis is in this too – and I loved her premiere dress. She was the one pop of color on the red carpet, and this cotton-candy pink looks AMAZING on her.

As for the film… when it was being made, everyone thought it was possibly going to be a major Oscar contender, but as far as I know, it’s made no one’s “Best of 2011” list, and it’s actually been criticized for it’s overwrought sentimentality. I can see how it looked great on paper, though – pair America’s Sweetheart with America’s Most Beloved Leading Man, insert national tragedy and a kid who is wise beyond his years, and wait for the awards. Why didn’t that work out? Here’s the trailer:

I also hate the shoulder pads.

  2. lucy2 says:

Don’t like the hair or the shininess of the suit, but otherwise she looks good.
I just saw the trailer for this, it looks really good but way too emotional. It will be one to watch at home so I can cry my eyes out in privacy!

I don’t like the satin fabric either but it doesn’t look that awful. Sandra could’ve found a better outfit though. She needs to wear something low-cut before I can comment on whether she had her boobs enhanced. I can’t really see a difference in this suit.

  4. Helvetica says:

It’d look much better if the shiny piece is just the suit.
Sandra look very very good for 40ish woman. She has no wrinkle in her forehead. I wonder if she’s had any work done.

  5. Marjalane says:

This look makes me think that some “yes-girl” assistant just kept saying, “Looks great Sandy, really looks great, go for it” and then turned her back and giggled. If you took away the severe hair, her face looked good.

  6. Maritza says:

She looks great besides, it’s the holidays, that’s when satin or velvet or shiny clothes are aloud. I like her hair too.

  7. merski says:

Well yeah, it did look good on paper when it was a novel by Jonathan Safran Foer. Maybe it wasn’t his greatest work but it was a good read. And then of course somebody just HAD TO make a movie out of it… I don’t think I’ll be watching this… :/

  8. Aria says:

She looks great! I like the outfit.

  9. Holly:) says:

I don’t think she looks that bad in that suit. But the hair, it is just, I can’t, ugh.. it looks really greasy at the roots and it is too straight.

  10. waldemar says:

Can’t really see a difference in the boob area. How can you tell anyway, it looks like the jacket is folding right were her boobs are suppose to be.

    Really like the belt.

  11. mssnarnd says:

You’re being flippant about Tom Hanks aging “naturally,” right? I’m assuming so, as we’ve all seen the HIDEOUS puffy, clammy pictures of his face years ago when he had a MAJOR refresh. Not pretty then. And hoping he’s not considering another refresh now.

  12. Gabby says:

    Kaiser,

What boobs? Her boobs still look the same size – small – in the suit.

    Reaching a lot…

  13. tracking says:

She looks chic and lovely—I like the whole look (though her stylist could have trimmed her ends for more polish). Rita on the other hand…face looks great but I feel she always overdoes the clothes/accessories. Tom, meh.

    • JudyK says:

I agree regarding Rita. I’ve never found her remotely pretty, and she has no idea how to dress.

  14. JudyK says:

Sandra has done something to her face, but she looks great…and I don’t think her hair looks at all greasey.

  15. Astrid says:

Good thing her name was in the title, or I wouldn’t have recognized her as Sandra!

  16. L says:

It’s a December premiere pretty close to the holidays, so the satiny suit doesn’t bother me. I think it’s appropriate for the season. Any other time though and ick.

  17. NotaBitterBetty says:

She’s looked much, much better than this.

  18. bagladey says:

I don’t like the stick-straight hair, the shininess nor the shoulder pads and Tom Hanks needs to remove those bags from his lower eyelids.

    • Lisa says:

I know, but I would hate for him to get surgery and end up looking like Tom Jones or Barry Manilow.

  19. MJ says:

I would kill for Viola Davis’ arms!

  20. Girl says:

You are absolutely correct in your sartorial assessment once again.

And Viola and Rita look amazing.

  21. Heinz says:

    ♥ Sandy

  22. rosa says:

    she is gorgeous
    so amazing
but where did you see the boobs?

  23. maggie grace says:

Yeah, I didn’t see any boobs. She is naturally small-busted, so to speak. Her hair, which is naturally gorgeous, looks bad and yes, dated. She’s a big fan of plastic surgery and has had subtle word done for the past 10 years.

    • gg says:

I agree – it’s the dip-dyed hair look. Not sure if she’s grown out her roots or dyed the ends, but it winds up cheap looking because all the hoodrat kids are doing it. Wigs with this half red half black business abound.

Oops I meant to comment on the hair comment above.

  24. JudyK says:

I LOVE Sandra…and she’s REALLY smart and articulate…think she’s gorgeous inside and out (so important), but I just noticed her feet. What in the heck is she wearing…they look like Frankenstein shoes. That cocktail pantsuit calls for a very slim, very high-heeled black satin pump.

  25. Laura says:

I didn’t even notice the camisole when I first looked at the pics….I thought she was just wearing the jacket and showing A LOT of skin!

  26. The Original Denise says:

Give it a rest….she looks great!

  27. Turtle Dove says:

The suit is good. The shine is okay, but I’m not loving the bell at the bottom. I don’t mind the hair so much because she doesn’t do bone straight hair a lot like some other actress who shall remain goopless. Woops. Didn’t mean to write that.

Kaiser, she doesn’t look bustier! How can you even say that using these pictures as the basis? 🙂

  28. sandy#1 says:

sandy looks great, very attractive, i don’t understand so many beautiful, talented actress who are not seen as much as others less talented? you know the ones that has to try hard.

  29. taxi says:

This is not her best look. Scraggly slick hair with ragged ends over boobs = fail.

Suit with ill-fitted jacket = fail.

Viola Davis looks great in pink but her antiperspirant failed.

  30. Lisa says:

She’s pretty, but the whole look is too harsh.

  31. Vera says:

In some it looks alright, in others it looks really cheap. A less shiny fabric that photographed better would have been fine. I like the shape and don’t mind the shoulder pads or anything. I do like how the shirt under sort of blends in. At first I didn’t noticed it then made she was wearing one (to me she is getting a bit old for showing that much skin that way – I only think fairy young starlets really “need” to show that much). I wouldn’t be surprised if the runway look didn’t have a shirt, though.

  32. Kim says:

I like the suit. She looks great.

  33. JaneWonderfalls says:

I think she looks amazing and I’m loving the ombre hair. I think she is looking better and better, her baby boy is certainly bringing out the best in her inside as well as out.

  34. whatevs says:

her hair is too long too mid parted too cow licked to pull this off. she’s somewhat too goody-goody to pull of a mcqueen anyway

  35. Kata says:

Blehhhh I’m so sick of ombre hair…when Drew Barrymore first debuted it I thought she had forgotten to do her roots for 6 months. And I agree with everyone else- I can’t really see her boobs, I think without seeing the cleavage you can’t tell if its your standard padded bra or not. Honestly, with the good push-ups they make these days all-natural often looks fake.

  36. Dorriet says:

Sandra looks spectacular in this classic satin McQueen suit. Perfect mix of strong, yet feminine (cut of jacket, shoulders, neck). Observe, non-fashionista gals, she is perfectly accesorized, meaning her accessory is her best asset…her skin and fabulous body, minimal jewlery, touch of the belt, gorg!…her hair is sleek, beautiful long layered to perfection. I give her a 9.8 out of 10. The only slight flaw is the length of the pant and the lack of a killer shoe. I would couple the pant with a spectacular dark silver glitter pump, slight platform, stilleto heel. Pant suit with pant covering shoe is a no no, particularly for a shorter woman – makes a short lady appear even shorter! Height and sexy fantastic heel would have made this look a perfect 10. FYI – the satin is totally envogue. Kudos to Sandra’s stylist.

  37. Kosmos says:

I’m a Sandra fan, so whatever she wants to wear is okay with me. Suit looks okay, but nothing special. I love her acting and she’s a great person. She’s never pushing herself like other actresses and she has a lot of class. Marrying J was a fairly giant mistake, but life goes on and we learn by our mistakes, too. I wish her the best!

  38. Jackie says:

the movie looks beyond lame. so cliche.

  39. cat says:

Maybe she just wanted a different look but I don’t really love it. Agree the boob thing is a stretch (ha) … she probably has a good/ different bra? Saw Tom Hanks on Letterman the other night, he said they are barely in the movie *together* on screen – which I guess makes sense, now that I watched the trailer. I had read the book, forgot the plot line. (and, um, is Tom H. a weird dude or what? I don’t know if it was Letterman’s manic energy but he just seemed like he’d be hard to have a conversation with… Jumping all over himself and seemed very much affected by fame as in people always telling him he’s great that he can’t speak unaffectedly..?).

    Viola Davis – gorgeous !

  40. Annachristoff says:

She looks ridiculous and I am getting sick of hair extensions.
