On the blind item, my bet goes for Jude Law, Robert Downey JR and his wife. RDJ gives me gay vibes.

  2. danielle says:

I hate to say it, but I never got Christopher Hitchens appeal. I hear him referred to as funny, but he seemed just like and angry curmudgeon to me.

Goop is partying with Prince Harry. That is so wrong.

    • erin says:

He had a sort of intellectual sarcasm… you really need to read to understand his sort of humour. Half the time I didn’t get the humour still, but a lot of what he said was brilliant. He will be missed.

  3. BNF says:

Amy Childs is the UK’s hot air balloon who needs to go away. She brought vajazilling (mis spell?) into the world. I hate her.

  4. ezra says:

    I admired this man’s courage,honesty and integrity.
    Rest in peace Mr. Hitchens.

  5. Leticia says:

RIP Christopher Hitchens. I am a huge fan of his writings.

The intellectual giants are dying off and being replaced by Kardasians. Sign of the times. Jesus, please come back soon…

  6. Jessica says:

Sad about Mr. Hitchens. I liked his books and attitude. 62 is pretty young to go.

  7. lrm says:

I think RDJ has admitted in interviews several times that he’s bi sexual.

And, funny you mention them-b/c i saw a pic of the 3 of them at an event recently, and had that same sense-she was holding court with ‘her boy’s lol
if not that, then RDJ and Jude def.got together, IMO. It’s just gossip; i have no idea. and my vibe for this kind of stuff is def. off. which is good.
b/c i need my vibe about my own life to be the thing that’s ‘on’. lol

  8. Veruca says:

Today is one of my darkest days.

I didn’t always agree with Hitch, but damn, I enjoyed the hell out of him. One brilliant mind.

It’s so sad that there’s such a shortage of those.

  9. Jen says:

Was sad to hear about Hitch. May not always have agreed with him but I loved listening and reading his arguments. He was a writer that always forced his readers to think, and think hard about their own viewpoints alongside his.

    • iseepinkelefants says:

I turned on the computer, saw the news and was blown away too. Granted I knew what was going on with him but it’s still a shock. Really sad news.

  10. Jackie says:

I just bought Arguably last week and finished God is not Great early this morning, before hearing of his death. He was a truly amazing human being. I will miss his Hitchslaps!

  11. xxodettexx says:

god is not great is one of my all-time favorite books and i will miss his acerbic wit!

  12. Esmom says:

He was provocative and smart and a great writer. His battle with cancer was a brutal one and I was shocked to see him lose it so quickly. RIP.

  13. Victoria says:

I did not agree with a lot of hypocritical standpoints on many things from theology, to torture in war, and all kinds of things, but that did not take away from his talent, and every month I received my issues of VF, his articles were one of the first I would search for.

RUP, Hitch. You were a hell of writer, and I admired you standing up for what you believe in.

  14. Girl says:

May he rest in peace. Very provocative writer. He will be missed.

  15. Greta says:

RIP, Christopher Hitchens. You were a great individualist. The world needs more like you!

  16. Sarah says:

A black day for atheists. The world has lost a truly great man.

    • flourpot says:

The four horseman are now three. It is a sad day. Lets do as the Irish do and drink a toast to his memory.

  17. JH says:

I’m reading Hitch22 at the moment and he had such a full, amazing life.

We lost a great mind yesterday. One that made thousands of people think, talk, research and write.

As Stephen Fry said, “Perhaps the best debater since Aristotle, someone truly talented.”

    Goodbye Hitch.

  18. JH says:

By the way, there’s a picture of Hitchens shaking hands with Paris Hilton. That always cracked me up, trying to imagine how that conversation went was the second best thing, only losing to trying to imagine what Hitch was thinking while talking to her.

  19. Jayna says:

    Brilliant man. Rest in peace.

  20. Jover says:

RIP while I didn’t agree with everything he wrote he was one leftist that didn’t shrink from the totalitarian terrorism of bin laden – the left needs more people like Chris and less blowhards like Bill Maher. America has juvenile talking heads – on the left and right – but few public intellectuals like Chris; he will be missed.

  21. Rose says:

So long Hitch, thank you for making me think so hard on so many issues.

  22. Jaded says:

One of the best “Hitch” stories I read was when he heard that another friend, a professor, had a habit of seducing female students in his writing seminars. He shook his head pityingly and commented “It’s not worth it. Afterward, you have to read their short stories.”

R.I.P. Hitch, I’ll miss your rapier wit.

  23. Stubbylove says:

Amazing man, writer, extraordinary mind/debater. Thank you Hitch!

  24. Lenore says:

Can I just say that I am just astonished at the level of civility and decency in these comments about Christopher Hitchens? Half the other sites I’ve visited – respected, mainstream, supposedly intelligent news outlets – have had comments sections filled with bile and viciousness and hate. And I come here to a gossip site and everyone’s all, “I didn’t agree with him but I respected him, rest in peace”.

I’ve got something in my eye. I could hug every one of you.

*exits before the hate comments start flowing*

    • Alexis says:

That’s why I stick around here — besides the sweet posts — the people that come and post here are definitely above par on the civility and thoughtfulness fronts.

      • Jaded says:

The few posters who spew hate-filled rants and personal attacks against the more intelligent and well-meaning people on this site don’t generally stick around – they either get kicked off or humiliated into not returning 🙂

  25. paranormalgirl says:

I didn’t care for Christopher Hitchens, I didn’t like his views, and I agreed with little to nothing that he espoused, but the world lost someone who had the ability to think and form coherent sentences. Everytime someone with his/her own mind is lost, a little part of the world dies with them. The world needs opposing viewpoints to make it a more interesting place.

  26. RJ says:

I find it odd that this site, a gossip site about Hollywood celebrities, is the only place I was able to find a blurb on Hitchens (without googling). Went to CNN’s main page, not a peep. Maybe there’s something to this “mainstream media” thing.

    • e.non says:

yeah … the office has msnbc on during the day, and i was struck by the lack of attention his death got — esp from the wdc political hacks. when it was mentioned, it was several stories in…

found him an unpleasant man, but he did produce work that made one think. and i agree with so many above, this country is in dire need of those types of people.

    • Shannon says:

Salon has a really amusing piece on how fundie Christian leaders are using the opportunity to be sanctimonious, as if atheism was the cause of his death. Other than that (which isn’t a mainstream source I guess) I haven’t seen any news pieces myself.

      • Derpy says:

If he would have just prayed and asked God to take the cancer away, he would still be here today, duh.

I heard about some twitter outrage over #godisnotgreat trending after his death was announced, some people.

        Rest well, Hitch, much deserved.

    • EscapedConvent says:

Hi, RJ—You will find oodles of Hitch on vanityfair.com, where he wrote & was treasured for twenty years. I’m not sure if they have a slideshow, but check & see, because I saw the most wonderful slideshow yesterday. I think people would be surprised to see what an angelic face Hitchens had when he was young!

  27. JaneWonderfalls says:

I never really paid much attention to his writings, but R.I.P….

  28. Debby says:

Just received Hitch 22 from the library the other day. Not far in, but am deeply saddened that I will not see or hear him again. Like most of you, I didn’t always agree with him, but I truly loved to see him hold forth. RIP Hitch.

  29. Happy21 says:

Sophia Veragara has a nice everything! Bitch has it all! Love her 🙂

Oh and the Ali Lohan picture is scary. I don’t have a good feeling about this Lohan either. Her mum should be shot!

  30. Tazina says:

Only 62. He was so right about the nonsense of religion. Sorry he is gone.

  31. Cerulean says:

Loved his wit and passion. Loved his intelligence and humor. Didn’t always agree but his mastery of language and his firm belief in a meritocracy made him a favorite to read.

  32. Cerulean says:

RIP Hitch. They broke the mould…

  33. Hmmm says:

I used to enjoy Hitchens’ trenchant opinions even when I didn’t agree. What a shame that he’s gone. RIP. He was one of a kind.

  34. donnadew says:

Never agreed with him, but his horseshit was so elegantly stated. RIP, curmudgeon.

  35. Betty says:

the world has lost a great person and periodicals …a subscription magnet.

  36. Trashaddict says:

Oh f**k. I will really miss his pissy attitude. Everybody’s so earnest these days, amidst it all his snideness was kind of refreshingly real.

  37. missanne says:

I lived at the same time as Christopher Hitchens. Im very happy to be able to say that.

    • Veruca says:

That’s an absolutely brilliant way to express it. Thank you for that. Truly.

Celebrities, writers, and political pundits die all the time. This one truly influenced me. Right or wrong – he always made me think and that is one of the best gifts one can give you. The shared feeling that organized religion was incredibly dangerous made him a brother I never had the pleasure to meet in person.

His books should be buried like the Dead Sea Scrolls, just in case some people decide to start burning again.

My condolences to Peter and the rest of the family.

  38. jc126 says:

So sad that Christopher Hitchens didn’t have more time on this planet.

  39. sally says:

It takes a lot of guts to stand up against the nonsense and contentiousness that comprises most religion. I think it wore him out. RIP good sir.

  40. MacScore says:

I agree with the poster above – I’m pleasantly surprised by the tolerance and civility shown by the posters on this site. Yay Celebitchy fans! Sad to hear that Hitch has gone – have been reading and learning from him since his “the Nation” days. Didn’t always agree with some of his later positions, but I suppose he incorporated that adage, “If you’re not a liberal when you’re young, you have no heart; if you’re not a conservative when you’re older, you have no head” (or words to that effect). RIP Hitch, and thanks for your outspoken courage.

    • Jover says:

Nice post that quote is i believe actually from English PM William Gladstone fyi and of course Chris would be quite familiar with its source.

    😢

  43. Good vs Evil says:

The world is a much better place without his rhetoric.

    • Rose says:

No, it isn’t, and only a fool would think so.

      • Tazina says:

Agree. It is absolutely barbaric and heart wrenching what religion has done to the people of this planet with no end in sight.

    • Lady D says:

I’m sorry, I disagree. I have absolutely no idea who this man is or what he espoused, but based on the above comments he obviously made people think, and that is never a bad thing. It is a sad thing to lose. I’m going to go educate myself on this man. It sounds like I missed out on something thought-provoking and challenging.

      • Jackie says:

You can find a ton on his appearances and debates on Youtube and he has been in several documentaries too. I learned who he was in the last several years and he shot right up to the top of my favorite people I like to listen to debate. Arguably just came out not long ago. god is not Great is a fantastic book. Really you can start with any of his books or debates and go from there.

    • Jaded says:

The world is a much better place because of his rhetoric – if everyone were as narrow-minded and opinionated as you we’d be living in a dictatorial society. Hitchens made people think, not everyone agreed with his opinions but he stimulated debate and discussion, thereby stimulating learning. We need more people like him in the world.

  44. ADS says:

Hitchens was a rather hateful character, no? Hated God and women. Sorry for the loss for his family but this man should not be applauded.

    • Rose says:

He didn’t hate ‘god’, however, he doubted such a diety existed, and that the god of the bible was rather a hateful creation of man. As to women, he found them unfunny, but clearly he needed them, as he married more than once. If you must disparage him, at least learn why.

    • Jen says:

He did not hate women, in fact one of the reasons why he was anti-religion was because most religions view women as second class citizens. As Rose said he wrote an article in which he said that most women weren’t funny, but he maintained it was because they didn’t have to be. Men had to be funny to attract women, women just are.

  45. Annie says:

I was an avid Hitch fan. In this culture of the bland leading the bland and hyper adherence to political correctness…he was the genuine article. His tolerance ( sometime intolerance) for those that disagreed with him was mostly tempered with humor, insight. His adherence to his athiest beliefs up til his final moments spoke volumes of his character as well as his legendary loyalty to his friends (see Salmon Rushdie) i will miss his books and v.f. musings and truly feel I have lost a friend who would have dismissed me had I the opportunity to fawn.

  46. forelithe says:

    alas no more Hitchslaps…
