Christina Aguilera: “No one can tell me I’m not a proud Latina woman”

It’s always amazing/fascinating to see how different Christina Aguilera looks when she’s not A) stumbling around drunk in candid photos, B) applying her makeup herself while under the influence and C) wearing her patented “clown face” style of said makeup. I know this Latina Magazine cover has a healthy dose of Photoshop, but Christina is definitely helped along by a quality makeup job and lighter, more appropriate makeup.

On getting married and divorced at a young age: “Was I too young? Not at all. I did the exact right thing at the time….I definitely wasn’t too young. I have always been older than my age.”

On growing older: “I was on the set of a film and the choreographer was 19 and I looked around at all the dancers and I was like, ‘Whoa! I’m the oldest person in this room. When did that happen?’”

On reconnecting with her father: “I’ve talked about how rough things were for me and I’m sure he’s heard it. He can’t be thrilled about it. So maybe one day we can do lunch…I’m 31 years old now. Maybe it’s time.”

On resting up from the intensity of shooting The Voice: “When I’m shooting The Voice, it’s intense. On a day like today, my ex has my son and we are not shooting, so I slept and I just slept. I love doing everything in my bed. Eating, sleeping…It’s my domain and my throne…I do it all in my bed.”

On how she handles gossip and brutal reviews: “I don’t read them. Ever…Why read what people are saying—good or bad?”

On criticisms of not being Latina enough: “I’ve dealt with that my whole life. I don’t speak the language fluently. And I’m split right down the middle, half Irish and half Ecuadorean. I should not have to prove my ethnicity to anyone. I know who I am.”

On planning another Spanish-language album: “All I know is no one can tell me I’m not a proud Latina woman…I dove headfirst into a Spanish-language album for that reason and I’m planning another one even though I don’t speak the language. I’m sure that doesn’t sit well with some people.”

[From Latina]

Does Christina really get criticized for not being “Latina enough” or is that just a straw man argument Christina is using to throw herself a pity party? I’ve always known Christina is Latina, and I’ve never heard her deny it or shrug off her ancestry, unlike Jessica “Don’t Call Me Latina, I‘m Merely Racially Ambiguous” Alba. I don’t think Christina has a problem there, I really don’t. And if she wants to do another Spanish album, go for it.

My favorite quotes was the thing about “Eating, sleeping…It’s my domain and my throne…I do it all in my bed.” Damn, ‘Tina. We get it. You eat pork chops in bed. You apply your clown makeup in bed. You guzzle your box of tequila in bed. And then you have sex with your boy toy IN BED.

She STILL has about 5 pounds of make up on in that cover shot.
I know what a bitch she is and the inside and outside of her match.
    Queen on the clown makeup!

    • aprayerforthewildatheart says:

Your post reminded me of a post about another celeb, that made me die laughing. I can’t remember who made it so I can’t credit them. But it isn’t mine.

      “Her clown game is strong”

      HAHAHHAHA!

  2. Jessica says:

The thing is, she’s right… She doesn’t have to prove herself. She’s half Irish do you hear Irish people telling her she’s not Irish enough ? I mean please …

And i’m suuuure she had that problem in her life, i’m sure of it. Americans and that dumb One drop rule …

    • Coucou says:

Please elaborate, i’m American and i have no effing idea what a one drop rule is. I say “vive la différence.” So you don’t speak for me, and neither do the politicians, if that’s what any of this bs has to do wit.

      • Dhavy says:

Halle Berry uses the one drop crap all the time and so do a lot interracial offspring. Sadly it is mostly out of convenience

      • jean harlow says:

the one drop rule is basically when you’re interracial and people will identify you with the minority group.

ie I am half black and white but as long as I can remember I’m always referred to as black.

The one drop rule goes back to slavery days ( maybe further) as long as you were mixed with black. you were black, white ppl will not claim you

      • TheOriginalVictoria says:

It is not mostly out of convenience. Please. It’s mostly because of racist views that being partially black is a stain or something and taints white blood. And now many biracial people are just proud to be black don’t find it as a stain at all. They’d rather identify as black because they WANT to

    • Gabby says:

Well, she’s not actually Irish is she? Were one of her parents born and raised in Ireland or are they just AMERICAN??

I lived in Ireland for a while, and even as an American of Irish ancestry, I would NEVER claim to be Irish because that’s just ridiculous. It’s like Italian-Americans claiming to be Italian. NO, YOU’RE NOT, YOUR ANCESTORS WERE. We would get so many Americans coming over and being like ‘I’M IRISH!’ and Irish people being like ‘wtf are you talking about you stupid yankee’.

      • Bluebear says:

This argument has run it’s course and is just as insulting as the one drop rule. My grandfather came from Finland. He spoke Finnish. My mother was raised by him, born in Minnesota, raised with half Finnish half English in her house. She traveled to Finland and had visits regularly from family in Finland. She raised myself and my two brothers. We are all really proud of our Finnish heritage. We love Finish food and culture. Yes, I am American in culture, that is without debate, however I am influenced by my Finnish heritage, and ignorant statements such as yours are just that. They are ignorant of the pride and appreciation for the multiple bloodlines that make up my genetic background. It is not black or white, it is most certainly gray. The Irish attitude toward American’s who identify with “Irish” is based on a love of country and patriotism for the trials that Ireland has overcome. What excuse do you have for your derogatory comments?

      • aprayerforthewildatheart says:

I’m an American citizen, but “American” isn’t a race.

I have such a varied ancestral bloodline, that it would actually be much easier for me to say “I’m American”. But if I said that, it would be considered an ignorant statement.

People don’t ask me about my citizenship, they ask about my race, as I can’t be easily “labeled” and a lot of people feel the need to label others. I once had a guy tell me that I had to choose a “race” out of the seven that I know I have, I told him to eff off! hahaha!

It’s not always negative. It’s definitely a part of human nature that I have noticed, and dealt with a lot.

      • KaitX says:

I agree Gabby, I am from Dublin and while It’s great that Americans identify with our culture, your aunts uncles cousins granny’s Irish red setter does not make you Irish!

    • It is ME!! says:

Yep. Pretty much this. I can totally relate to what she is saying, too.

The boozing too much, though? Can’t relate to that at all….

  3. brin says:

I don’t mind what she said about her being Latina enough, but the quote about her bed being her throne and doing everything there was so ridiculous. She always looks like she just got out of bed.

  4. Katie says:

    1. That is the most Ineloquent interview I’ve read in a while. She sounds like she barely made it past the 7th grade.
    2. I agree with you. I’ve never heard people criticize her for not neog Latina enough. It seems like a desperate attempt to stay relevant after the spate of bad press she’s received.

  5. Tapioca says:

The orange hairline gets me every time!

Less boozing & more singing, please – in any language. I would love it if she made another Stripped-esque album, but with a more grown-up and classy image, seeing as she has the voice to keep the presentation simple.

If she tries to go toe-to-toe with Gaga and the glorified strippers like she did on Bionic I fear she’ll only fail commercially again.

    • Jessica says:

I think the same thing… Does she not know her hair is orange??? You think someone would tell her about it!!!

      • Missy Mara says:

You don’t get it guys, she applies the heavy make-up in bed, dozes off every couple of minutes, and finally sleeps on it for an hour or so, which explains the make-up, the hair, and the make-up on hair.

      • gg says:

😆 @ missy mara! I guess you nailed it!

  6. Bite me says:

With the weight gain she looks so much like mama

  7. Zelda says:

I call my bed “my island.” I do everything in there, even research. And I love it. It’s my spot away from the world.

    So I get it.

Of course, I live in a studio apartment…

Oh, and those are ugly rings.

    • gg says:

I really hate those rings. they were probably expensive but they look cheap. further, they look like she stole them from Ozzy. They look like prosthetic robot fingers. How in hell can you grasp your makeup brush/hold change/type/do your hair with those on?

  8. Asli says:

Whaaaaa? I’ve never heard about people calling her ”not Latina enough”. Weird. I’m half and half too but that doesn’t define who I am. I don’t go around proclaiming that I love both sides EQUALLY. That’s really not what matters. It’s the person inside that matters. I see Christina is lacking in that department…

  9. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

I am half Latina and my complexion and eye color are similar to Christina. There have been times where people can’t believe I’m Latina because they expect all Latinos to have black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion. If people can’t accept that we come in all shades that’s on them (not me).

    • Tiffany says:

I agree! I am not latina, but it is very true that most people expect latinas to have dark hair and eyes. Sofia Vergara is a good example. She is a blonde but couldn’t get cast until she dyed her hair black. Casting directors couldn’t mesh “blonde” and “latina” in their brains.

    • Jezi says:

I am the same way. I am half and half as well and I get shit all the time saying I’m not latina because I either don’t look it or speak the language. My son’s father is 100% latin and my son has blond hair. I also think people are going to question his ethnicity as well. It’s quite irritating to have to justify what you are.

      • Jennifer12 says:

I can’t stand this woman. Everything is about her being a victim of someone or something. Now people are telling her she isn’t Latina enough? The only thing she’s not enough of is sober. My nieces- biracial- have curly blond afros, pale-ish skin, and green eyes. Another niece (also biracial) has long, thick black hair that needs straightening, pale skin and brown eyes. People say stupid crap all the time, especially when they see them with my daughters: “They’re all cousins? Really?” Christina plays the race card, the bully card, the domestic violence card- she’s always the victim. Now she’s doing the Latina thing, trying for that fake boriquena accent. Just NO.

      • Jennifer12 says:

not that it NEEDS to be straightened, but it has to be to look straight

    • It is ME!! says:

I KNEW there was a reason I liked you, Mort! : ) (Half Latina here, too.)

    • Samigirl says:

Love and agree! I’ll throw in my little blend. I’m adopted, but my biological father is 100% Mexican, came here from Mexico as a child. My biological mother is a melting pot of *mostly* Irish and French. I am SO pale, porcelain colored make up leaves a noticeable line, and I’ve got freckles. I have dark hair and brown eyes that are shot with green. Nobody believes that I am half Hispanic, until I’ve got a tan, haha. 🙂

      • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

@it is me!! Thanks, you’re pretty cool yourself

@sami, Estée Lauder makes a great liquid foundation in “Ivory” that’s a great match for me. It’s a little pricey, but a little goes a long way and no more makeup lines!

@jezi, it is very frustrating! My favorite is when people think my mom is my MIL, because she has black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion. When I was little people asked her if I was adopted!

    • Lboogi says:

You do know that Xtina’s eyes (just like Paris Hilton) are really brown and that she wears blue contacts in varying hues. All you have to do is llok back at her mousekateer days to see her real eye color. Also, the only reason she did a spanish album the first time is because it was the thing to do at the time. It was the latin explosion with Jlo, Marc Anthony, and Ricky Martin.

  10. Jayna says:

I have, because she doesn’t speak the language many don’t consider her part of the Latin musical community and resent her success with her Spanish album

  11. bea says:

I can see where she gets the criticism. She is obvs not a natural blonde (and not too many Irish have snow white hair). She’s a brunette. And she looks WAY better in her natural color. No one knows what her true skin tone is bc it’s buried under cheesey goodness!

I feel sorry for her – she’s way over weight (which seemed to show up in 2010), she’s in a crap relationship and her career is waning. Sad, tragic clown.

    • Sammi says:

I think we can all agree she is overweight for hollywood but she looks fairly normal for the average person size wise. However, she looks bloated in the face in the same way that college freshmen look in the second semester because they have been boozing too much and get puffy face.
and Christina has always had blond hair even in her youth…just not platinum blond which only looks natural if you are really pale/ Nordic looking.

and I for one can’t forget Christina’s spanish album came out when being “Latina” was big as in Jennifer lopez and Shakira and Thalia were on the scene. It was capitalizing on a market. Combine that with her black hair/ghetto accent phase and you understand why people criticize her sometimes.

    • Jayna says:

Look at all her childhood to tween photos. She was a natural blond definitely. A little fair-skinned, blue-eyed blonde.

    • Tiffany says:

Um, on the Mickey Mouse Club she had blonde hair. She is a blonde. Hair color isn’t determined by nationality, plenty of people from Ireland have blonde hair.

  12. Maritza says:

She sells more albums in Spanish than in English, if she knows what good for her she should at least learn her to speak it.

  13. jc126 says:

It’s true, she shouldn’t have to prove anything to anybody. Who are the arbiters of whether other people are ethnic/cultural/whatever “enough”? One of my favorite authors has apparently been criticized for not being American Indian “enough”. I don’t get it. If someone told me I wasn’t “enough” of something, I’d be pretty pissed, too.

  14. NO SH¡T says:

Find it funny that her and Jessica Simpson have their own version of K-Fed with the guys they are with now.

  15. fabgrrl says:

I think she is throwing herself a pity party. Not Latina enough? I’ve always known she was, and she makes Spanish albums, yes? I think this comes from her earlier attempt to claim her weight gain is deliberate and that she is just a sexy, curvy, Latina. Which is so stupid, Just because a culture can appreciate a fine ass and doesn’t equate feminine beauty with looking like a 12 year old boy with melon breasts, that is no excuse for being a sloppy, flabby wreck wearing clothes three sizes too small.

  16. Marjalane says:

No self respecting Latina would go out with ratty ass hair like she has. It kills me that she has access to any and all ability to have GREAT hair and make up and she still chooses to go out looking like a Bunny Ranch reject.

  17. Lola says:

I remember a while back people were saying, I didn’t know she was Latina, only when it’s convenient blah blah on here so I’m glad she’s setting the record straight, she’s proud of being Latina, if she wasn’t she would have changed her name a long time ago.

  18. Leticia says:

Those leggings are not flattering on her.

  19. TheOriginalVictoria says:

She’s not throwing herself a pity party. When she first came out with Mi Reflejo, a lot of people took issue with the fact that she totally was capitalizing on the El Niño (haha Bridget Jones!) phase in American music. Ricky Martin, Shakira, Marc Anthony, Reggaeton, and all types of singers and genres that are Latin.

It’s not about Christina looks because, even if some of us are color struck, we recognize in our cultures that Latinos all colors and races. Only non-Latinos would deem J. Lo more “authentic” because she “looks” Latina. But for Latinos It’s all about “por toda la raza” and orgullo (pride) when it’s time show a united front so color doesn’t matter in that specific context. LOL.

But our people come at her and J. Lo all the time for not being Latina enough, mostly with the older crowd. J. Lo doesn’t really speak Spanish all that well but she knows a lot more about being Puerto Rican than Christina does about being Ecuadorian according to the naysayers. I can’t make that judgement call. I don’t know what Christina knows.

Christina used her roots as a way to make money and expand her audience base just J. Lo. Sure. That doesn’t bother me all that much though. I mean no one cares that Britney capitalised off of her All-American white southern girl image. And people like Whitney and Aretha, capitalised off of their black gospel voices. But to the older folks, the fact that you can’t speak the language and know nothing about your Hispanic roots will often get you a side eye. It’s even worse when you are American or mixed. It used to be that parents would come to the US for better opportunities and not teach their children Spanish. They wanted them to be fully Anglicised. But now, folk are all like if you’re in America teach your kids Spanish first and let them learn English in school, teach them about their culture. Latino Orgullo!

Whatever. I’m still trying to teach people that you can be of Chinese or African descent and be Hispanic, so I don’t have time to even deal with Christina. She is Ecuadorian and Irish, and if she’s repping them both, then good for her.

    • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

” It used to be that parents would come to the US for better opportunities and not teach their children Spanish. They wanted them to be fully Anglicised. ”

This is exactly what happened to my mother. Her father is cuban and puerto rican and her mother was from Spain and they didn’t teach my mother or her siblings Spanish. According to my grandmother, my grandfather was ashamed to admit that he was Hispanic and often told people that he was Italian. He felt he would have access to better work and living conditions if people thought he was “white.” In some way, my mother feels robbed of a certain part of her culture, because she never learned the language. However, she also realizes that her parents were trying to help her assimilate and fit in as best she could.

      • It is ME!! says:

        Again, Mort with the realness.

Do you know my dad, btw? LOL. He flat out refused to teach my mother, brother and I Spanish. Maybe because he had such a hard time learning English and didn’t want my bro or I to go through that.

      • ZenB!tch says:

That’s what my parents did with me. I had to be fluent in English the first day of school. No ESL or bilingual ed for their kid. Nosiree. I have 2/3 of a Masters, they did with me what they wanted. LOL. I have a little trouble with Cuban and El Salvadoran but other than that I understand spoken Spanish perfectly I had to actually take 2 years of Spanish to pass the foreign language requirement in college. I had to go to a government office today. I was told to grab a clip board and fill out a form. I picked one up in Spanish. I stared at it and was like../. wait. I’ll have to call my mom to help me. The guy looked at me like I was insane. So I said, “Dude this is in Spanish!” he gave me an English one. So no I can’t read or write Spanish very well but I can get by.

    • Relli says:

      EXACTLY.

Except i feel like the criticism of JLO has more to do with her being Puerto Rican. Which is totally different than being any other type of Latino in the US. Remember the whole debacle when she won the part of Selena.

      • TheOriginalVictoria says:

The issue wasn’t because she was PR it was because she wasn’t Mexican period. Even Selena was not considered “Mexican” because her Spanish was off when she spoke and she grew up in Tierra del Gringos but she did become fluent and she was just amazeballs! Love her always.

And that’s because Latinos get tired of being lumped together. Yes no one cares that Meryl is not really British or South Fafrikaan when she does those roles but it’s different when you are a “minority”.

Cubans are not Dominicans are not Mexicans are not Puerto Ricans. We share a languages and a European ancestry and some mass cultural mores but have different cultural and ethnic make ups specific to the region just like anyone else. As a matter of fact, I am part Cuban, but grew up around Puerto Ricans so I speak Spanish the way Boricuas do in terms of slang and diction. I can barely understand Dominicans half the time and some times Cubans because the dialects are different and it’s not standard Spanish being spoken. And a lot of black Dominicans won’t embrace their blackness where as Afro-Cubans seem to represent. Mexicans seem to have a stronger link to their Native roots than Peurto Ricans as the Taino tribes was decimated to extinction so there is just a lot of mixed folk. But people tend to think we all just sombrero wearing, taco eating, baseball breeders. LOL.

      • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

@it is me!! Their intentions are good, but they don’t realize they’re doing more harm than good.

@theoriginal, I have a couple cousins from PR and they know exactly how to speak (slang-lish) to eachother when they don’t want me to understand! LOL. One of them is married to a Costa Rican girl, and they don’t speak to eachother in Spanish because they can’t understand eachother. LOL

  20. Petunia says:

If Christina was born in America, then doesn’t that make her an American first and foremost? I don’t break down all of my ethnicities and put them ahead of my being American.

  21. texbrook says:

This b!tch is from Staten Island.

    • TODAY says:

she was born in staten island but rasie
in wexford pa a upper middle class suburb near Pittsburgh.

  22. cecizahn says:

The thing that bothers me with people claiming to be part of some culture is that, personally for me, you belong where you spend most of you life. She’s just a girl who happens to have a latin father but she is born and raised in the US so, for me she is no latina.

    • Gast says:

I agree. So her father is from Ecuador. That alone makes her a latina? She was brought up by her mother after the divorce – Christina was seven. I don’t know how much “latin” influence was in her upbringing, but if it wasn’t a hell of a lot – she is not a latina. I am from Germany and I heard quite often, that kids with a different cultural background were offended when someone called them Turkish or Polish. A lot of those kids (or adults) say “I was born and raised in Germany. I think of myself as German – so why don’t you?” So when it comes to Christina I believe, it’s all about making money and getting a bigger market to sale her records.

  23. Linney says:

So when does her Gaelic album come out? I’ll set a new trend and call her not Anglo/European enough.

What a bunch of made up drama.

    • Relli says:

Maybe……….. but if you aren’t a different ethnicity or a part of the minority living in the United States you wouldn’t get it and there is no way to explain it to you.

AND FOR ALL OF YOU SAYING YOUR AMERICAN ONCE BORN IN THE US AND NOTHING ELSE …. that is very naive and simple way of thinking. I will remember this the next time i here a someone rant on about “REAL” Americans.

      • Linney says:

How do you know I’m not? Your answer is narrow minded and assumes knowledge you don’t have.

Also, it’s “you’re”. Perhaps if you weren’t trying to “yell”, you’d have caught that.

      • Linney says:

And also, if you were a Gaelic speaking Irish person living in America, you’d be a bigger minority than most already living there.

  24. Katija says:

Does anyone else remember her Diary episode way back in the day where she was hanging out with her dad and calling him “daddy?”

Yeah… honestly, that always stuck in the back of my head when she started going on the “woe is me, daddy abused me” kick. And I find something really “off” about her mother. She talks about Christina with these like, zombie worship eyes.

I’m not trying to downplay the hideousness of domestic abuse… I just also don’t put it past this hideous woman to embellish her situation for attention.

  25. Stacy Dresden says:

She is so incredibly talented vocally but I’ve always thought she was, how shall we say, a dim bulb.

How she chooses to self identify when it comes to ethnicity or culture is her own business. People simply see through celebrities and other public figures capitalizing on their ‘difference’ when it’s convenient or lucrative for them to do so.

  26. dee says:

    it’s Ecuadorian!!!!

  27. dee says:

I am American but that’s never enough of an answer everyone obviously always wants to know what Nationality my parents are and last time I checked every job application, hospital, or doctors visit is the same. Always have to elaborate into the whole entire story of my nationality anyway.

    • Sammi says:

I get that too. I’m Moroccan-American but have an olive skin tone so am I African American or White? I’m not European or Middle Eastern (Moroccans get annoyed if they are lumped in with the Middle East) so technically I can’t put white but I’m not Black either… I got to the point where I just put “other”. Everyone thinks I’m Hispanic anyway upon first looks so I think categorizing people by their looks or ancestor’s nationality is silly. It shouldn’t affect if i get hired or not because at the end of the day I’m American and thats what is important so whatever. Christina, if you are Latina Irish roll with it but just don’t get the Latina or urban accent in interviews or songs just when its convenient.

    • It is ME!! says:

At the doctor’s office, I can kinda understand, since some diseases are prevalent in certain racial/ethnic groups (i.e. sickle-cell anemia in those of sub-Saharan African origin, cystic fibrosis in those of Irish or Northern European descent, Tay-Sachs disease in Ashkenazi Jews, etc.).

  28. Jover says:

Yes to petunia texbrook and Today – also, there’s more to any culture than mass market pop culture, which is pretty homogenized all the way around, latin culture also includes I believe at least a dozen latin american writers that have won the nobel prize in literature – isn’t literature part of culture and don’t they count?
This whole line of argument is way overblown and ridiculous – using a mass market pop star as symbolic of anything is dubious – I guessing that what she actually knows about authentic latin culture wouldn’t fit on the end of her fingernail. She comes across as too self-absorbed to know anything as Katie pointed out.

  29. Addison says:

As a Latina myself, I know plenty of people (latin) who criticize those who do not speak Spanish or know the culture. I get where she is coming from. Even though I am fluent in the language and quite versed in the culture. I see how some people are treated for not being “latin” enough.

  30. LeeLoo says:

Is it so wrong to want Christina to actually look like a Latina? She needs to ditch the blonde hair and the clown makeup. If she’s so proud of being Latina she needs to do herself a huge favor and start looking like a good Latina girl. With her new curvy body I bet she will look beautiful.

    • Lissa says:

She doesn’t need to look the way anyone wants her to. She needs to look the way SHE wants to.

Also, what exactly does a “Good” Latina girl look like anyway? And what does a “Bad” one look like?

Your comment is puzzling to me…

      • LeeLoo says:

Which my comments are wont to do when I write them when I multi-task and get sloppy in writing them. I meant no offense and wrote without thinking. I realize my comment can be taking in a wrong light could potentially be considered somewhat degrading toward Latina women. It was never my intention. Please allow me to clarify:

What I meant is, she keeps going on about being this “proud Latina girl” but then she whines about getting criticized for not being Latina enough and for looking kind of ridiculous. I’m trying to encourage her to show her off her Latina roots and quit giving people reasons to criticize her. Her entire career and persona would turn around if she flaunted those roots. I mean if she is happy with her clown makeup and fake blonde hair that’s fine but then she needs to not bitch when people ridicule her for it because she looks awful. If she wants people to quit ridiculing her then I suggest she flaunts what she naturally has. She’s actually a very pretty girl without all of the makeup and the few times we’ve seen her without the nasty blonde color she is so attached to she looked lovely. I just want to see a more natural Christina and I think she looks very Latin and very pretty when she goes au naturale and I sometimes think she tries to hide it with her caked on makeup and blonde hair.

  31. Lissa says:

Forget all the Latina debate…I hate her red nails with the pink lips!!!!

She looks good here tho, I just would have done either a super dark nail color (1st choice!) or a natural one but NOT RED!!!!

They obviously photoshopped her face slimmer, which explains why she doesn’t look like Snooki here! Good job, I say!

  32. Nikki Girl says:

As a Hispanic woman myself, I just think she’s an embarrassment at this point and I want her to go away, she grosses me out. American, Hispanic, female, whatever- she’s an embarrassment all the way around.

  33. Joane Mena says:

what an idiot, what an embarrassment to have her as a Latina when she can’t even spell where she is from right….its ECUADORIAN….-____-

    • Keis says:

I’m not arguing her authenticity or anything like that, but I’m pretty sure the misspelling of Ecuadorian is the fault of either the magazine or whomever reprinted the quotes.

  34. mew says:

she could be a bit less proud……..

  35. NinaG says:

I’m just wondering why she was never this proud when she first came out…But whatever, I really try and avoid these topics of race, nationality, and heritage…it just seems to divide people more you know.

Im half Russian and half Brazilian and most times I feel like Latinos dont get enough love here in America. People think we are ignorant and incompetant. I went to Harvard and MIT. Even there, I wasnt treated very well (people arent used to seeing Latinos succeed). It seems like only whites, jews and asians are allowed to succeed and be judged as intelligent. There is a lot of red tape I’ve experienced at every job due to being half Latin and people like to deny that there is a tremendous amount of discrimination against Latinos. I even have people mention how my engilsh is so good. um I was born here and Im an aero-nautical engineer lol. I get people say Im white all the time. Latinos dont get taken seriously. We work very hard and contribute tremendously to this country. We are also always portaryed badly in the media/movies and misunderstood. Im Brazilian and we are so diverse in Brazil alone, that other Latinos as well cant be summed up in one word. The word Latino even doesnt do justice. I am very proud of my parents countries, Russia and Brazil, their work here and my achievements here. I dont allow anyone to bash my heritage, all 3: Russian, Brazilian and American. I have called out sevral people at work assuming Im a w.h.o.r.e for being Russian and Brazilian and taking credit for those nation’s achievements or downplaying them. Most of it is from narrow minded people, mainly whites. People dont think Latinos are smart. Look at asian kids and how they get treated better from the get go. They have it easier when it comes to racism. Latinos get racial profiling.

Latinos are hated a lot since we arent asian, white or jewish, so we must suck at everything they way the media portrays it and we are all illegals. Nah Im very proud. And I hate people who say I shouldnt have received a full scholarship to both Harvard and MIT cus Im not American enough. Well I earned it and I am a better student so ya its mine. They make it seem like we dont deserve anything. Not my fault black and white kids suck at school and latinos and asians are going forward.

Im allowed to be as proud as I want. I made it out of poverty in 2 generations and achieved the American dream my folks came over here for. Now I give back to America.

    • ZenB!tch says:

Jaqueline, I too am a college educated Latina: Mexican, Spanish, French and some other mix. I have to ask if you get guys who are interested’s eyes bug out and say “YOU are LATINA”??? I thought you were white… yes, I am and Native American too. I was also denied scholarships because the counselor at my HS thought “Spanish” made me “White”. They finally figured out Latino is not a race but an ethnic group and we range from blond to black.

    • TheOriginalVictoria says:

I find it interesting that you consider yourself Latino as most people from Brazil are very clear that they are not Latin but of Portuguese descent in terms of language and culture. Sure Portuguese is like 80 percent the same as Spanish, and as a kid my Brazilian friends were Latino as well in my mind. I was then corrected and told they don’t consider themselves Latino as that refers specificall to Spanish speaking cultures and even the world Latino itself is up for debate among some who only feeling Spaniards and Italians should only clasify themselves as Latin.

Also, your statement about black and white not wanting to work hard is really ignorant. If wasn’t for black and whites during the civil rights movements, a lot of of other minorities would not be enjoying the freedoms that we all enjoy today. I am Afro-Cuban, African-American, Gallic, Celtic and Rappahannock and all of my ancestors no matter how they got here, worked hard, went to college and tried to raise respectful and hard working citizens.

Latino is not a race. And as a Brazillian you should know that the culture is made up of so many ethnicities and sub cultures and that’s what makes us awesome.

There are lazy, crazy. bigoted, narrow-minded, nasty people in ever race and culture across the board. No need to throw everyone under the bus because you’ve dealt with some mean people.

  37. ZenB!tch says:

I’m sure she’s been called not Latina enough and not white enough. It happens to all us mutts and it is good for young girls to see it because it means they are not alone. I’m not Latina enough and I am a lot darker than she is but lighter than Jessica Alba will ever be (sorry, it’s petty but I know that bugs her). My friend is too Latina and ignorant people think she’s lying on her resume. Some who looks like Christina and is a proud Latina does need to scream it from the rooftops. When people think “Latina” they think someone who looks like Jessica Alba – can’t pass for white but isn’t black or Asian.

OK I will stop with the Jessica Alba stuff. I don’t want to offend anyone other and Alba.

  38. Jacqueline says:

Yes people do get freaked out when they see my combination (People said I look like Olga Kurylenko when QOS came out)and the fact that I can speak both Russian and Portuguese like a native speaker. I love both sides of who I am and I love being an American. Brazilians dont consider themselves Latino but I see myself as a Latina. I dont see myself as a complete white person, that would be denying my mother’s beautiful Brazilian culture (she is a white Brazilian btw native+German descent). I dont see what else Brazilians are, and they do get mentally lumped in with Latinos, regardless if they like it or not. I have met a lot of rude and inconsiderate people, especially where I was born and raised (Boston, MA). But I love my country America and all of her people and immigrants. Latino is a culture not a race. Even if you werent raised latino but have a parent that is, you can claim it as who you are, as in heritage. In my case I have citizenship from all 3 (Russia, Brazil and America), often visit relatives and still speak them so well people there cant tell I wasnt educated there. There is a difference between Brazilians over there and Brazilian-American but you’re still Brazilian. Some Americans are beyond 4th generation of wherever so they are only Irish descent, not Irish anymore. I hope I am understood. Im second generation so yes I am a Brazilian-Russian-American. I am proud of it! I dont allow anybody to bash Latinos in front of me. We have a lot of struggles and haters here in America.

  39. Magsy says:

The fact that she feels the need to even comment on the “not Latina,” enough is stupid. Who is saying that? Why does it matter? Now she can also claim identity with overprocessed blondes, overweight alcoholics, orange-tanned blondes, Disney has beens,….Sadly, the “Genie in the Bottle,” now looks like she drinks a bottle a day. 🙁

  40. Anne says:

you people are so judgemental! She was simply answering questions that she was being asked. I’m not a fan of her but nobody deserves all these rude comments about her being overweight and wearing too much makeup. Yeah, she might have too much ego in herself but it doesn’t mean you shoud be judging her. As long as she feels comfortable and happy, let her do it! Judging people for being overweight and dying their hair or wearing too much make up is RUDE AND MEAN.. were you not taught manners? But yet, she does have an amazing voice.. and al you guys have IS FILTHY RUDE OPINIONS! If you can’t say nothingnice.. don’t say anything at all!

  41. brittney says:

You guys are all such bitches. Y do you care so much about what Christina aguilara does or says. It’s none of your damn business. She has a beautiful voice and the rest is her business. It’s amazing how much people are so quick to judge but i bet if people were talking shit about you, you would be crying like a little bitch. So think before saying stuff because u all sound like real stupid.
