Jennifer Hudson’s Grammy tribute to Whitney Houston: beautiful & respectful?

I watched most of the Grammys – I turned it off after Adele performed “Rolling In the Deep” and I switched the channel when Chris Brown performed early in the evening. Note to Grammy producers: you’re going to put a woman-beater on your show before 9 pm? There are still kids watching at that point! Anyway, I did miss Jennifer Hudson’s tribute to Whitney, but luckily I caught up with it this morning. I think the producers did find the right tone with Whitney Houston’s – and LL Cool J as host really helped out. I wasn’t offended by LL offering a prayer to Whitney’s family and loved ones at the beginning of the show – it seemed authentic and kind, and it still felt like a celebration of music and… like, a joyful wake. LL said in part, “There’s no way around this. We’ve had a death in our family, and so at least for me – for me – the only thing that feels right is to begin with a prayer for a woman we loved, for our fallen sister, Whitney Houston. Whitney, we will always love you. And we’ll remember you the best way we know how – with a song.”

Anyway, here’s J-Hud’s performance of “I Will Always Love You” which came towards the end of the show:

Beautiful, right? I think it would have been cool if Dolly Parton – who wrote “I Will Always Love You” – had come on to honor Whitney in some way, I think J-Hud’s performance was lovely and respectful. She sang it with Whitney’s arrangement style, but Jennifer avoided “mimicking” Whitney’s voice. It was powerful.

  1. Elvynn says:

Beautiful but I prefer Amber Riley’s version.

  2. Len says:

I’m really trying to like J-Hud’s voice, but again it feels like she is not singing but shouting/yelling. It feels really uneasy on the ears. Does anyone else have this with her?

    • KP says:

I agree with you. Her voice is overrated.

    • Leah says:

I thought you’d never ask Len! I can’t stand her and her voice is bottom heavy and strictly gospel! So doggone country sounding. She refuses to do gospel, but that’s the only choice she has. Someone with a lighter tone, the ability to glide over that song should have been chosen. Jen refuses to work on her voice. Celine Deion was the person who should have done it.

      • TheOriginalVictoria says:

Leah, girl is that you? Love seeing you on CB! You are so correct. I just posted that on DR. She wasn’t horrible, but I really can’t stand her voice. There is no musicality to it.

    • dena says:

      She sucks.

      • dena says:

@Kaiser, how come I’m being moderated sometimes and sometimes not? I didn’t violate any rules, soooo…just wondering.

        thanks!

    • smith says:

Thank you, thank you. Her voice is just not all that. It’s very heavy and seems untrained for certain styles. Yes talent is a huge percentage but not everyone who can carry a tune can sing all things for all people. Why is she unaware? Does Weight Watchers offer vocal coaching?

I’m grateful she’s not a prancing peacock of a singer like Christina A. (the woman’s voice reminds me of a bowl of wobbly jello) but in the end, they both make me want to change the channel.

    • laylajanelovesgossip says:

She tried her best but she BUTCHERED the song….I feel embarrassed for her:-(

      • JustJen says:

Problem is…she chose a song that is so signature Whitney. No matter what she did with it, it wasn’t going to sound like anything but a poor imitation.

    • Raven says:

She has a good voice, but she does not have the range that Whitney did before she lost her top range from drug and alcohol abuse. I think JHud’s vocals are very heartfelt and thought so in this instance as well.

    • Hmmm says:

Not a fan of WH but Hudson’s singing made me appreciate WH’s voice. Hudson was straining by the end. It might have been because she didn’t have time to practise. On the other hand, perhaps she doesn’t have a versatile voice. I thought it was pretty dreadful (as were a lot of singers that night).

    • orion70 says:

Her weight watcher’s commercials ruined any interest I had in hearing her sing. Between the “sun in the skyyyy-y-y-yyy” and “I am yoooo” so often on the TV, yeesh.

    • Rebane says:

I deffinately agree. All I could think was “Well she’s definitely no Whitney Houston.” And then I’d flinch a little when she missed a note. To be fair though: she was upset and it’s very hard to hit all your notes when you’re upset, but her performance of the song was by no means good. (For understandable reasons.)

  3. Asli says:

She did great, though, there were one to many embellishments. I, too, changed the channel when Chris Brown came on. What kind of message does it send that an Acadmy (Recording) would allow a woman-beater on tv AND give him an award? Absolutely disgusting.

    • Jayna says:

Rhianna has issued statements saying Chris is a talent and should be able to continue on and they have followed each other on tweets recently. They were both on the Grammys last night. I feel everyone deserves a second chance and not have their career destroyed. I had more issues to see him on the GMA morning show and he flashed such anger again, showing he still had issues and hadn’t matured. No matter how much he hates the questions, he should expect it when first promoing his new album.

If Rhianna is supportive of his career and made positive statements about him recently and forgave him, why should the show shun him if his album was a big hit? I don’t care for him, but don’t think everyone should ignore his album if they enjoy it.

      • Asli says:

You know what they say about cheaters, right? And addicts? Yeah, same thing goes for women-beaters.

His tantrum at GMA just showed how immature and un-repentant he truly is. He thinks he doesn’t deserve this scrutiny, he thinks he deserves adoring fans and multiple awards. He’s an entitled brat and will only become worse as time goes on. This award, the sales and performances are only inflating his ego and making him think that he can get away with anything and everything. To me, guys like him are the scum of the Earth, along with murderers and rapists. Complete scum.

      • Faye says:

Jayna, I used to volunteer at a local center for battered women. I cannot tell you how many women were beaten to within an inch of their lives — sent to the hospital for days, literally needed surgery — then would turn around and defend the guys who did it to them. “They’re just misunderstood! They just made a mistake! I’m sure I was at fault too!” etc, etc. That didn’t meant the men weren’t women-beating scum who deserved to rot in jail. It just meant the women were messed-up and misguided.

So just because Rihanna defends Chris Brown and said this “major talent” should be allowed to continue (which he is anyway), no, that does not make it the case.

      • LAK says:

@Jayna – i once had a friend who went from abusive relationship to another. She always gravitated to the batterers and she always said that whilst she didn’t like the beatings, how else would they show their love??? True story. I couldn’t deal after a while and to my eternal shame i dropped her because i could not make her see sense.

      • Mar says:

I agree. It has been 3 years – everyone deserves to be able to grow up and not be judged by one incident in their life

      • cbear says:

Because women die every day from domestic violence. Because Rihanna could have died.

Just because Rihanna is experiencing forgiveness, or possibly questioning her role, typical of the cycle, it doesn’t mean everyone else in society, who is not in the situation, and can be objective about it, should also sweep it under the rug. There is another woman in the wings who will be his next victim. It’s societies’ job not to glamorize this abuser. Because beating your partner is not a spur-of-the-moment thing. There is a cycle of events and thinking errors and personality disorders that go with it – and you just don’t do it once, say sorry, and expect to be allowed to move on. Society has to take domestic abuse more seriously.

      • laylajanelovesgossip says:

Chris Brown is still acting a damn fool. Lord help any woman other than his mother that crosses his path. He has NOT changed or learned a thing.

      • Leah says:

@Asli, Yeah, I pretty much agree with everything you said. He’s shown his true colors since the incident, especially with the GMA debacle. What message is this sending to young women and men by allowing him to continue on like he never did anything wrong?

      • irishserra says:

A person who makes a stupid mistake and works hard to change deserves a second chance. Chris is not that person. He continued to defend his actions and then continues to be angry when questioned about them. This man cares nothing for anyone but himself.

        Oh, and yes:

He does absolutely deserve to have his career ruined.

    • Ruffian9 says:

Everyone involved in promoting this a**wipe should be ashamed of themselves. I did not watch the show (apart from Adele)but most certainly would have changed the channel for good had I know that he was performing. Thanks for your post, Faye. Sadly, there will always be those who want to give this piece of s**t and ones like him a second (third, fourth, whatever..) chance. Even worse, some of those ‘defenders’ will have been victims themselves.

irishserra – I totally agree with you.

    • Bleuladi says:

I am feeling at this point that he paid his dues as far as the law is concerned. They let him back on television the very same way they let any drug addict or alcoholic back on television. So over the whole Chris Brown/Rihanna fiasco. Both of them need to sit down some where. Why would they follow each other on twitter or anything else. If you can’t get along, part ways. I think everyone is giving them way too much attention. Let’s find something else to dwell on besides them.

  4. Len says:

Also: why Jennifer Hudson? Why not a singer who has a real connection with Whitney? Someone from her generation or someone like Dolly Parton or Mariah Carey. A heavyweight.

    • J says:

I would think that anyone close to Whitney would be to grief stricken to get up and sing one of her songs at a huge awards show the day after she died…

      • Len says:

That’s true. But if it only had been someone like Stevie Wonder or Lionel Richie..I don’t know

      • ataylor says:

JHud apparently needed to restart singing the song several times because she was so emotional during the rehearsals earlier that day. I think the final performance was the one time she managed to not break down and cry though I thought at one point she was about to but managed to hold it.

At least thats what it seemed like to me.

    • Jayna says:

Mariah’s voice isn’t what it used to be for such a powerful song. Dolly is still the country version. Jennifer performed that song in front of Whitney before and Whitney was up clapping and dancing. She loved Jennifer’s talent and they were friendly. She was the perfect person to sing it. Chaka Khan was supposed to be part of the tribute also, but was far too emotional and backed out.

      • Cherry says:

That explains it, thanks Jayna! I was actually wondering about the choice of JHud, too, but I guess it makes sense. Kudos to her, too, for delivering such a flawless performance of a song that’s notoriously difficult to pull off. Everyone remembers Whitney’s version, it has become her song. So I think JHud deserves a lot of credit for her courage.

      • brin says:

ITA. I also think it took courage for Jennifer to sing, first because of Whitney, and also Jennifer’s own family tragedy. She did a great job.

    • Dawn K says:

      Len,

Jennifer and Whitney just filmed a movie together where they played mother and daughter. Apparently during rehearsal, Jennifer kept breaking down. I think Jennifer did great, considering the short time they put it together in.

      • cmc says:

No, you’re thinking of Jordin Sparks. However, didn’t Whitney present JHud with her first Grammy? I think they were actually friends, or at least friendly.

      • Leah says:

Whitney did give JHud her Grammy. She actually gave an interview on Piers Morgan where she said it was one of the proudest moments of her life. I can’t find it now but it was on about 2 days ago.

    • lush33 says:

I for one think it would have been amazing to see Dolly do it. Her version has always been my favorite.

      • ahoyhoy says:

Dolly’s is so beautiful. Subtle yet so touching.

      • demian bichir says:

        Agreed.

      • whatthehell456 says:

I completely agree. Dolly’s version would have been understated and beautiful….and hell, she did write the song, if anyone would know how to sing it, it would be her.

      • Lushus L. says:

I agree also! The first time I heard Dolly Parton sing that song, I got shivers. For years, I didn’t know it was her song. It’s so sweet and has an actual melody when she performs it.

    • V says:

Whitney presented Jennifer with her first Grammy. Jennifer said she love Whitney so much that having her present the Grammy almost overshadowed the fact that she won. Many of Whitney’s close friends were grieving privately and I think Jennifer was a great choice.

      • lrm says:

i agree with another posted; celine dion would have been a great choice. but j hud was a friend so it makes more sense…..

  5. paola says:

Did Beyoncè give up her space to let Jennifer perform?

  6. brin says:

Beautiful and respectful and I love that LL Cool J said a prayer. Whitney started as a gospel singer.

  7. Guest says:

I liked her tribute and think she is looking good.

  8. ab says:

    she sang beautifully!

  9. TXCinderella says:

I think Jennifer did a fine job. LLCJ did a respectful tribute to Whitney’s memory. I thought it was tasteful, not over the top or understated, but just right considering she had just died the day before and they had to rearrange the show to include it. RIP Whitney Houston and God watch over Bobbi Kristina.

  10. Annie says:

I think winning an Oscar for a role that primarily demanded singing gives her the “gravitas” for this occasion. I think they didn’t want Beyonce because somehow wether or not she intended it would be about Beyonce.
The pressure had to be enormous (a little more than 24 hrs notice?) but she delivered.

    • Jen says:

Agree SO much. With Beyonce or many singers, it’d be about them. Proud of J-Hud for truly keeping it about the moment and not herself.

    • hillbillygirl45 says:

I agree, JHud had very little time to prepare……but she did with grace and dignity. She didn’t try to “be” Whitney, she sang it her way, and she did great. Even if I could sing, I couldn’t have done it. So, props to Jen.

    • Happy21 says:

I could not agree more. I can’t help but feel like Beyonce would turn it into a Beyonce show – whether she would mean to or not.

Jennifer Hudson was a good choice…

  11. Zelda says:

Wanna see something REALLY upsetting about the Chris Brown performance?

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/horrible-reactions-to-chris-brown-at-the-grammys

    • Laurabb says:

^That is exactly why it is dangerous to have a beater back up there.

    • Franny says:

This is incredibly disturbing. If I had a daughter that wrote/thought something like that, I would really be concerned. Its disgusting.

    • Flan says:

Geez. I hope those idiots never reproduce, but trash like that are usually the first.

    • Day says:

SMDH. Some chicks these days are too sad for words. And, these are the women who will raise the future generation of kids. Wow. Most of these girls look my age(early 20s) and I am not even this damn dumb and naive.

    • anti says:

I hope any parent, friend or co-worker of those tweeters gives those folks a talking to.

Maybe they’re joking? Maybe not? At the very least it’s disgusting and unsympathetic.

    • sm255 says:

Pffft, I took those comments with a grain of salt. Ofc they would say that but on one condition: just as long as they get to be close to his good looks and money. Haha!

Doesn’t mean that they exclude the fact of whether or not they would defend themselves…;)

    • Asli says:

I’m embarrassed and ashamed FOR them. They’re my age. Damn. Shocked, shocked, shocked. These girls/women have NO self-respect- Kind of like the women/girls (can you call these idiots women, seems like their brains aren’t done developing) falling all over him at the beginning of his second performance. Disgusting. Can’t tell you how glad I am that I’m not any of them. They must be missing some brain cells.

    • Ruffian9 says:

Very disturbing. There must be some sort of disconnect for these girls. Maybe they’ve never been physically abused and they’re really young and somehow don’t ‘get’ how heinous it is? Or they have been abused and think it’s ok? God, I can’t even get my head around the thought process that needs to occur to post something like that.

  12. Kate says:

I agree about Chris brown. Why did they get him to perform???? And not once but twice…. And Katy perry applauding?? He beat your best friend?!?! What’s wrong with people???

    • Flan says:

      Yeah, ridiculous.

If a celebrity INSULTS a minority, they will be blacklisted forever.

But those who actually BEAT women, get forgiven.

  13. Ogechi says:

I dropped some tears watching J-Hud’s performance. She is a talented beautiful woman, i adore her.

  14. XDX says:

I thought J Hudsons performance was respectful and amazing. I would have loved to see more performers honour Whitney’s legacy, but maybe it was too quick and still too much shock, so shortly after her untimely and sad death. Maybe some other time we see Beyonce, Yolanda Adams, Chaka, Aretha, CeCe and Dionne honour her legacy. (And please no Mariah or Christina this time!)

  15. vv007 says:

I watched some of the performances but I was most impressed by FOO FIGHTERS!

I also changed the channel when Chris Brown came on (hated the intro too), and I had a total EWWW moment seeing Taylor Swift doing her best “oh gosh, golly, people are standing for me? Oh my” schtick after she performed.

I missed JHud’s performance but I saw it on youtube. It wasn’t bad. I actually preferred her to Alicia Keys. Keys kind of ruined that performance with Bonnie Raitt for me anyways with her weird stilted intro to the song, and then trying to get the last word in over Raitt at the end of the song.

In fact it seemed Keys was a little more fixated on the Whitney situation than the fact they were celebrating Etta James.

  16. Jessica says:

I thought Foster the People did a great job on the Beach Boys song… they did great!! YAY!! ADELE rocks!!!

  17. Jules says:

Jennifer Hudson is very talented and can belt with the best of them.

  18. lucy2 says:

I thought it was a nice tribute, and if they had to have anyone singing it, Jennifer was the best choice. She’s a bit shouty for my taste, but she does have a strong voice and did a nice job here.
I watched the Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Bonnie Raitt, and Jennifer Hudson performances, and I think that was about it.

  19. mln76 says:

I think Jennifer was the closest they could get to Whitney in terms of actual range even if her vocals were a bit over the top she followed Whitneys’ arrangement. Mariah for instance wouldn’t have been able to hit all those notes.
Also I think Jennifer actually understands grieving and loss so she hit the right tenor in not trying to overshadow Whitney and make it about her performance. So while it’s nowhere near the definitive version of that song it still brought a tear to my eye.

    • ataylor says:

JHud actually broke down earlier that day during practice and I think they needed to restart the song several times because she was so emotional during the rehearsals. Whitney was apparently one of her idols.

I think that televised performance was one of the few times she managed to keep it together.

I think she did a beautiful job considering everything being so “fresh” and last minute.

      • Iggles says:

I agree. It was enormous pressure and did amazingly well.

      • gab says:

I know performers are professionals, but have you ever tried to sing while emotionally upset or distraught? I cannot imagine how performers get through the songs at events like this. I used to sing in a church choir and when one of our choir members died the family wanted the choir to sing at the memorial. I got up there with the choir but I could not utter a sound. I stood up there in front of everyone and mouthed the words while the tears streamed down my face. I couldn’t eek out a sound. It is so difficult to do.

    • mimi says:

UM… I DON’T THINK SO. look up charice, her voice and her range is far closer to whitney’s than jhud’s could ever dream to achieve.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUZiX2j57aA

  20. JudyK says:

I thought she did a lovely job, and she didn’t attempt to pretend to be Whitney.

  21. Romia says:

I used to watch American Idol…Jennifer Hudson is as breathtaking now as she was then. Her covers of I Have Nothing, Weekend in New England, Circle of Life…love her. Cheated out of running against Fantasia (whom I also enjoyed listening to) for the Idol crown, no doubt due to the severe lack of anything resembling taste from the majority audience, her success is a panaeca to a true fan…even if it’s not success on the level of a soul-less dead-eyed Beyonce.

  22. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

The performance not only felt appropriate; it was a breath-taking, tear-inducing beauty. A very sweet tribute.

  23. Jane says:

Nobody can outsing that song besides the old Whitney. I mean, even the “new” Whitney couldn’t sing it anymore. How the mighty can fall…

  24. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

On a different note (needed to be separate), thought I would mention

“I wasn’t offended by LL offering a prayer..” No, I wasn’t either. That was lovely. But how contradictory to then have such a blasphemous performance by Nicki Minaj. Anyone who genuinely prays/believes in God should have been disturbed and furious by that woman’s satanic performance.

    • maemay says:

Given the death of Whitney Houston, someone at the Grammys should of pulled the plug on that performance…Sofia Grace has more talent and does’nt lip synch.

    • Zelda says:

Ll Cool J is the Christian. If he wants to pronounce it on stage, whatever, do your thing, buddy.
But that was his personal choice. The Grammys are not a Christian event.

      • TheOriginalVictoria says:

But Whitney was a Christian and very devout for all of her personal issues and I thought it was respectful to her that he said that prayer for her and her family. Everyone did not bow their heads, because not everyone believes, but who begrudges someone for a prayer that a believing family would appreciate? Everyone seemed very fine with it.

It was not about you or anyone’s beliefs other than Whitney and her peeps.

      • Zelda says:

Yes, the prayer was for Whitney Houston. As I already said that was appropriate. But it is not the Whitney Houston show and it is not a Christian show, and therefore “blasphemy” is not applicable.

  25. Cathy says:

It was good, and also respectful. Jennifer did a good job.

  26. 30Minutes With Mike Rowe says:

I too changed the channel when Chris Brown performed. Was disturbed to see his acceptance speech after winning his Grammy – thanking God for his blessings with a great big grin on his face. He totally believes he’s above it all. After seeing the tweets of women saying they would love to let Brown beat them, well, now I know why he thinks he’s above it all…he is.

  27. Lucy says:

She did a *nice* job and she’s a perfectly *nice* girl but as someone else stated, she’s all low register. Kinda all country church singer. She doesn’t have that lovely almost whisper part, that song needs that almost makes you cry. (especially now) Mariah could have pulled that off better IMO.

  28. Suzy says:

Love JHud, love her version of this song & thought it was a lovely tribute to Miss Whitney.

    But I’m so not feeling JHud’s hair-very 1950s mom /catty comment

  29. TG says:

I thought Jennifer Hudson did a great job. You could tell she was fighting emotion throughout and that affected her voice a bit. I would rather someone be genuine in her tribute to Whitney than make it all about them like Xtina did at Etta James’s memorial.

  30. sm255 says:

Meh. Jen did alright, but nobody can re-sing that song except for Whitney Houston herself, bless her soul.

As for Chris Brown…I can say that, right now, I’m judging him by the music he makes and not by his personality. Besides, that’s what the Grammy’s are for, right? Recognition of the work you’ve done? Because if they didn’t let him perform, it’d be kind of questionable especially to his fans (OMG yes he does have fans, but I’m not one of them). Allow me if I bring in a non-related issue to comparison, but it’s like if the publishing company that hired Orson Scott Card had fired him just because of the homophobic remarks he’s made in the past. They decided to judge him by what and how he writes instead.

Judge the art, not the artist. Least that’s my philosophy.

    • Lucy says:

So if Chris Brown had murdered or raped someone he should get a grammy too??

      • sm255 says:

What the hell? No! Those two offenses have far more harsh consequences and they actually catch the attention of the police.

But then again, Roman Polanski was accused of raping a 13 year old girl way back when and he’s still has supporters and is in the business. So who knows? Probably how Hollywood logic works when it comes to the law.

Chris Brown paid for what he did by community service. He got lucky with his punishment and so far he hasn’t beaten up any other woman out there…far as the public know anyway. All I can say is, it looks like he isn’t dwelling in the past and he’s just focused on his music (which isn’t getting any better tbh).

  31. Nancy says:

Dolly should’ve sung that song since Whitney’s not around to sing it anymore, the only person who should sing that song now should be the one that wrote it Dolly Parton.

    • Lucy says:

That would have been lovely…esp with all the LAME country stuff that was on there. LOVE me some Dolly!

      • Jen says:

I’d agree except that Dolly herself can’t sing the song very well these days. Heard her do it a year or so ago and it wasn’t great.

  32. Heather says:

It was a moving and touching performance. J Hud did a good job. But I could not help but thinking, “poor girl” because her voice was nowhere near as good, powerful and moving as Whitney’s was. Whitney is just one of those performers who just has such a beautiful voice, it is impossible for anyone to sing one of her songs and to sound better or even close….R.I.P Whitney.

  33. flutters says:

The thing about this performance is it wasn’t about being as good as Whitney. It was about reinterpreting the lyrics of one of her signature songs to express grief at her passing. By that standard, Jennifer Hudson delivered the perfect performance: beautiful, powerful, respectful, sincere, and raw in her grief. I had my doubts about this one because she has the tendency to oversing but I think she nailed it.

  34. mememe says:

I love the tone LL set at the top of the show and Jennifer’s tribute to Whitney was endearing, heartfelt and beautifully raw.

  35. cecizahn says:

Did anyone noticed that Etta James was not mentioned in the pictures?

    • Beatrix says:

Yeah, what was that!? I did notice that she was left out of the in memoriam section and question why on earth they would do that? I can’t think of a reason, it isn’t as if she got her very own memorial performance. How strange…

    • anti says:

      yes 🙁

  36. Day says:

Even though I thought her voice was a little to heavy/deep for this song, she did amazing. People have different voices but she made the song her own. You could clearly hear the emotion in her voice. So, glad they didn’t get Christina on there to do Whitney’s tribute. She would have over sang the entire song. And, I am fuming at the fact that they cut the song short to give the felon another chance to perform. He is back now, can you stop shoving him down our damn throats?

It did not work for me, I would rather have listened to Whitney sing her own song with a backdrop montage of photos.

  38. Ana says:

I think Jennifer has a beautiful voice and is an amazing singer. I know a singer makes each song their own putting a little personal touch to them, they don’t try or are supposed to imitate the original to a T.

Now having said that…I hated it! I was expecting more from her.

  39. Happy21 says:

I’m not a Jennifer Hudson lover or anything but she can sing. I think that because she still is kind of more low key than Christina, Beyonce and Mariah she totally pulled it off. She sang the song with emotion and did not try to be Whitney. I think she did a fantastic job.

I’m sure it was great big rush to get her on to do that and get the tribute sorted out on such short notice. Given that, she did a fantastic job.

Last night for me really confirmed that most of these pop tarts who are out there are not even in the same league as Whitney. Katy Perry was AWFUL and Rhianna made me want to throw something at my screen!

There are very limited artists who actually have significant talent – Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Beyonce (it pains me to type that…) is really about it. Florence Welch is pretty amazing too.

  40. Kim says:

Beautiful. I like that she didnt try to make it her moment and go all crazy with the notes. Plus she was holding back tears and that makes it very hard to sing.

  41. original sandy says:

i loved it, Jennifer did a great respectful job, but made it her own. love her and the tribute, it was last minute also, very classy jen.

  42. bisolar says:

So sad. The world has lost an irreplaceable singer. A lot of what ifs keep coming to my mind.
What if she hadn’t met Bobby Brown is the primary one?Would she still be dead.
So sad! To have the world at your feet and to die so young when she could have been like Aretha. Aging gracefully and respectfully while deigning to grace the world with your presence and talent once in a while.
    Was in shock throughout yesterday.
    Still am.

  43. chloew says:

I’m sorry, I’m so over her.

and I didn’t like the performance last nite.

there I said it and I feel better for it.

  44. sabine says:

jennifer’s performance was very very good and i am not even a fan of hers. To say she wasn’t any good is just ludicrous. I don’t know what people want or expect but somebody has to be bitching about it and be negative and drag people down. The tribute was classy. End of story.

  45. Brooklen says:

Jennifer Hudson was PATHETIC!! She ruined the whole Whitney Houston tribute!! She only wishes she could ever sound as good as Whitney!! I only wish it was Nikki Minaj or Lady Gaga whom died instead of a beautiful singer like Whitney!! As far as Jennifer Hudson I was watching E television a bit ago and heard that she had taken over Whitney Houston’s place with Clive Davis… How dare her even attempt to sing a tribute to Whitney Houston!! Jennifer Hudson and Clive Davis should BURN IN HELL for what they did!! Music is dying off with all the legendary singers like Whitney!! Stop the computer editing and let us hear your real voices and see if you are truly worthy of being a legend… Taylor Swift has got to be the absolute worst singer I have ever heard live but you edit her music with computers so much you completely make her sound different and she totally SUCKS, my cat sounds better than her!! Taylor Swift should never be the superstar that she is!! She is a typical idiotic White Bread Beeach and she has a body like a little starving boy (she is sooo damn anorexic) I hope people start standing up against all this crap and have a revolution to save music!!

    • demian bichir says:

Thank god!I thaught i was the only one in this thread who wasn’t on drugs! This girl doesn’t deserve to be performing at the Grammy’s,let alone be on that stage to do a tribute to the great Whitney HOUSTON.

      Kelly PRICE,Faith EVANS,Brandy,Mariah,
Deborah COX,Chaka KHAN(even tough i heard she was too emotionnal to do it),Toni Braxton,MJB,Celine Dion,…I wanted to see the all stars game of THE DIVAS not an x american idol b* OK!

    • SamiHami says:

What are you, twelve years old? I hope so-I’d hate to think an adult would post something so badly written and poorly thought out.

Come back after you’ve graduated sixth grade and maybe you’ll have something worthwhile to post.

  46. Linney says:

I think Jennifer Hudson did okay but I guess I don’t know why we had to choose a song that was a remake and from a movie soundtrack instead of a Whitney original. She had so many lovely, inspirational songs. I wish they had chosen something different.

  47. valleymiss says:

I really liked that JHud was picked. Yes, her voice isn’t as strong as Whitney’s was at her peak, but whose was? Possibly Mariah didn’t want to do it because when she sang at Michael Jackson’s memorial, she didn’t do the greatest job because she’d been crying in the days beforehand and was too emotional. JHud is enough of a lowkey person that it would have been about the song, and honoring Whitney. You get Celine or Mariah or (yuck) Beyonce, and it’s about them. Plus, Whitney liked JHud and I feel was probably more of a mentor to her (a la Christina singing at Etta James’s funeral).

  48. bamabrasileira says:

She was better than adele and she captured to moment beautifully ,considering how emotional the occasion was. unfortunately, most of you have come to believe that autotuned voices are actually good. adele is actually trying to mimic this type of voice and doesn’t quite get there (like amy winehouse could when she was with us). also, i suspect most of you are mad because it wasn’t whitney singing the song. get a clue people!

  49. hatsumomo says:

I wonder if Mariah will come out and say something, i thought those two together were great.

  50. Newmrs says:

Not a fan. She sings toooooooooo Loud!

  51. Maritza says:

She did a good job although she definitely not use her full range voice, you could tell she was emotional and in control. She is a great singer, love her!

  52. Chris says:

Too laboured and stilted for my liking. But you can’t knock the gesture.

  53. SamiHami says:

Lovely and dignified. Can’t ask for more.

  54. Melinda says:

I think she did a lovely job. Respectful, sounded great, it had to have been difficult under the circumstances. That said, I am so over this song being played non stop, it needs to go away for at least 5 years.

  55. mimi says:

i know of at least one singer who can sing as good or as close to whitney’s version as one can get. her name is charice. however, she isn’t that famous nor that popular compared to jhudson but imo she is miles ahead of jhud when it comes to range and tone.

    • Newtsgal says:

      Wow!
That girl has a set of lungs on her!
But have you ever heard the real version of the song….with Ms. Dolly singin’ it’s much prettier when it’s sung softly. And I think would have been better last night instead of trying to sound just like Ms. Whitney
      http://youtu.be/6j4U66RYzQo

  56. Newtsgal says:

    JHud was okay…..
I would have loved to see Dolly Parton sing it the way she did it and the only way it should be done.
I just read that the powers that be have up’d the prices for Whitney’s album in the wake of her death. Now that’s just tacky!
They don’t kind two shits about her death, they just want to make that money.

  57. Ravensdaughter says:

Jennifer Hudson has a beautiful voice and a beautiful heart. Her tribute at MJ’s funeral (there was a casket there-that’s a funeral) was lovely, as was this tribute to Whitney.
I remember when Whitney first broke onto the scene. She was a sensation. She had everything going for her. What happened?
Another great talent lost to drugs, although in Whitney’s case the battle was long.
I pray that her daughter, who is already having drug problems of her own, doesn’t follow in her footsteps. Losing your mother is enough to push anyone over. I lost mine at 25. No drugs for me, but irrational behavior-I just walked out the front door of my workplace and had to be tracked down to return. It hurts so much, and you’re in such a fog. I hope her daughter doesn’t artificially augment that fog with drugs.
So sad…may Whitney be in a gentler world than ours.

  58. Teri from Canada says:

Mirah Carey should have done the tribute

  59. Kosmos says:

Jennifer Hudson is a fabulous singer, hands down…her rendition was completely touching and respectful. I love Hudson. I’d love to have a voice like that. She’s come a long way and she deserves a wonderful career. I don’t see any reason to find fault with her. She seems sweet and authentic. She looks beautiful as well.

  60. Lisa B. says:

I think her performance was great. She sings well enough and it was appropriate.

I just loved how she was not screaming and shouting like Whitney herself and her copycats Mariah and Christina.

Jennifer was fully in control and being able to emote without unnecessary theatrics.

And she looked really nice, though the shimmer all over her body was very distracting in HD, 🙂

  61. JudyJudyJudy says:

it’s like asking someone to sign “People” – no matter how good it can never near let alone beat the original. But she did fine under enormous pressure.

  62. NOSCRUBS says:

I don’t condone what Chris Brown did but why are you all baying for his blood when Rihanna has clearly let it go?
The fact that you all regularly drool over Fassbender who beat his GF is also ridiculously hypocritical.

  63. truthforreal says:

The thing with JHud and her singing/voice she tends to over sings her songs and yells most of the time, but she really pulled this off and didn’t over sing. Also I will like to say after hearing Gee’s performer Amber Riley she song The same song as JHud and without a doubt she knock it out the park. Amber Rile’s voice is something to be reckon with. Also with the Chris Brown issue that people still seems to have with him, I feel/think that everyone should a step foward and allow God to contiune to judge Chris’s actions. The boy was young and now he’s older and learn his lesson let it be
