Susan Sarandon: “I’ve had some lipo under my chin and under my eyes.”

Susan Sarandon is talking about plastic surgery! And she’s admitting to it! Epic. Here’s something that’s weird though: Susan admitted that she had “some lipo under my chin and under my eyes” in a new, exclusive interview with People Magazine, but People Mag didn’t lead with that admission in their online story. Not only did that refuse to lead with it – they didn’t even include it in the online edition. Other outlets are simply crediting People Magazine, in what I’m assuming is a more extensive article in the print edition. WTF? Here’s the People piece, with the quotes culled from the print edition:

If you want the truth about aging in Hollywood, ask Susan Sarandon.

“It’s true there aren’t that many good parts,” the outspoken actress, 65, says in an interview in the new issue of PEOPLE. “I’ve had my disappointments. It’s hard to be in this business and not be an alcoholic or a drug addict or bitter as an older woman.”

But, she adds, “that’s one of the things you have to make your peace with – or get out of the business because everyone has those moments. I’m not the only one.”

At an age when many actresses are relegated to granny roles, Sarandon mixes it up with such unexpected cameos as a seductive teacher on 30 Rock and Andy Samberg’s mom in Saturday Night Live’s “Motherlover” skit.

In her latest movie Jeff, Who Lives at Home, she plays an uptight mom dealing with two dysfunctional adult sons (Ed Helms and Jason Segel). Of course, she shows her sensual side, too: “It’s really more of an attitude than it is being naked,” she says.

Before she even hit 40, Sarandon was informed that her sexy days were over. “I was told by John Cassavetes when I did The Tempest never to be a mom because I would not be sensual anymore,” says the actress. Her reaction? “I think I laughed.”

Sarandon went on to have three kids: her actress daughter with Italian film director Franco Amurri, Eva Amurri, 27, and two sons with her former partner Tim Robbins, Jack, 22, and Miles, 19. And she definitely still has sizzle. “I’m happy to be considered desirable.” she says. “I love it!”

Besides, she says, “I think there’s a lot of guys who like strong women. Maybe because women have raised sons who have different expectations. I think we can take some credit for that!”

As for plastic surgery, Sarandon says, “I’ve had some lipo under my chin and under my eyes.”

And the actress says she would consider getting Botox injections as long as doctors don’t go overboard.

She adds, “I have these two huge frown lines here (on my forehead). But if you can’t move your face or you’re unrecognizable, I don’t see how that’s a productive enhancement. You don’t want to look like a female impersonation of yourself.”

[From People Magazine and Starpulse]

Media relations aside, what do you think of Susan’s lipo admission? I’m slightly disappointed, just because I thought she was all-natural. But I like that she admits it – and says what she had done specifically. I looked through these recent photos of Susan, seeing if I could detect the work… and I can’t really. Which is a good sign. It’s not like Susan’s revelation brought a “No sh-t, Sherlock” moment for me, at least. Even though she had lipo under her eyes (probably to remove the bags, right?), I can’t tell that she messed with her eyes at all. It’s not like a Kate Winslet situation where we’re just supposed to accept that her eyes are now pulled and tweaked, and we’re supposed to think that’s “natural”. Susan doesn’t look pulled, or tweaked or jacked. Yay?

Whatever she’s done or not done, she looks amazing for 65. Easily 10 years younger.

  2. YoYOBaby says:

I guess then they put the fat into her boobs?
Yeah, full disclosure, me thinks not.
Not the same boobs from Rocky Horror Show.
In fact not the same eyes either. They were bugged eyed in RHPS then less so…
“Lipo” under the eyes no it called a lower bleph.
But lipo sounds less complicated more casual.
    Nice spin Sarandon.

    • poppy says:

i thought she had big boobs in rhps and they weren’t real then. well, on the fence. i can never tell unless they are the rock hard grapefruits.
i do appreciate she’s copping to some work though. wish more would.
save acting “natural” for the screen.

    • Holly Hobby says:

The “bug eyes” are usually a sign of a thyroid condition. Maybe she got that treated?

      • laurie says:

Once you get “bug eyes” from thyroid condition it never goes away, even after thyroid condition is treated or goes into remission. Unfortunately….

    • fabgrrl says:

Uh, she was a LOT younger in RHPS. Boobs definitely change as you age and gain weight — not to mention three pregnancies!

  3. almond says:

I think she’s an example of how plastic surgery can be an improvement, i.e. when used sparingly and with moderation. All these other celebs seem to forget that the point is not to look like you had anything done. But most seem to have no sense of quantity or quality.

    • nobodystan says:

Exactly, less is more. Hopefully, she’ll stop there.

BTW, she looks gorgeous to me.

    • bns says:

It’s not always a matter of overkill. Plastic surgery looks good on some people, and bad on others. I think people should be able to have whatever kind of surgery they want without being bullied for it. Even if it goes badly, it’s their body.

  4. velourazure says:

i give her credit for not doing the wind tunnel thing.

  5. apsutter says:

I don’t really like plastic surgery and don’t think that I would get a lot of work done to my face. But the one thing I have promised myself that I will get lipo under my chin when the skin starts to get loose and my neck worked on when it gets loose. You can really tell someones age from their neck and hands.

    • Esmom says:

Yes the dreaded turkey neck. I’d love to avoid that at all costs.

    • DesertRose says:

The ‘waddle’ runs in my family. So bad, I’m sure that I too will get it eventually. My grandmother would never dream of having surgery, but my mom had it last year. She’s 55 and in conjunction with the chemical peel she looks a good decade younger now. I have no doubt that I will have the same surgery when I get older =)

  6. Molly says:

It suits her. I have to give her credit for being unashamed. So many actresses lie, and Sarandon didn’t. Good for her.

  7. Cinesnatch says:

I had a hunch she did something, but only a little. She’s copping to. I respect that. She “gets it.” … Okay, so maybe she’s not telling the entire truth … but, whatever she’s done to herself, she’s nicely accentuated what she has.

  8. Leikyn says:

I’ve never found her especially attractive, but no way in hell she looks like that at her age without help. Little lipo to the eyes and chin? Tip of the iceberg.

  9. novaraen says:

I always did wonder about her boobs…I mean…in Rocky Horror they were a normal small pert size. Since then they have gotten HUGE. Like DD’s or bigger. Implants???

    • Jaded says:

Some women get runaway boobs as they get older – I was a C+ until I hit my forties, then went to a D, D+, DD, verging on an E cup by the time I hit 55 even though my weight hadn’t gone up dramatically. Hormonal thing I guess, so I had them downsized back to a C+.

    • Jaxx says:

Some women’s boobs get bigger as they age, especially if they gain some weight. Mine were a B cup in my twenties and thirties. I’ve gained about twenty pounds over the last twenty years and I swear most of it is boobs. Now I’m in my fifties and I’m a very full D cup. I don’t like it one bit.

    • anniecc says:

She was extremely petite in RHPS, and still had large boobs for her frame – I’m guessing a C cup. A lot of women’s boobs get bigger post menopause, particularly if they were already inclined to store weight there. I remember Jamie Lee Curtis has commented on this.

    • zenb!tch says:

I have to go look at “Janet” again because I never paid much attention to that character. I know her from those sexy older woman movies she did in her 40s. I loved her for that. Remember back then 40 was ancient and dying. Kind of like 60, now.

She had the very large boobs and slightly too thin legs for her body type back then, just like now. The boobs were a tad droopy so I thought they were real. I am not sure if these movies were pre or post Eva. I know she met Tim Robbins on the set of one of them so it was before her sons.

  10. benny says:

I don’t think people care if actresses do what they have to do to keep working. But what we hate is the lying — when the surgery is obvious and they still lie about it, it’s as if they think we’re stupid. And, it’s as if they’re saying they are soooooo genetically superior to everyone else that THEY don’t need the surgery even though other, more naturally beautiful women did.

At least Sarandon is admitting it. Good for her.

    • Jen says:

ITA. It’s not suprising that movie stars need work to keep up their appearance, just annoying when they lie about it.
I like her matter-of-fact attitude about it.

      • zenb!tch says:

That’s what I’ve always liked about her. She seemed real. I can see the eye thing now that she mentioned it. The chin could have been pulled tighter but I think that was the point to look better not perfect.

As an aside I am glad she had the eye thing done. All my aging is under my eyes and botox does nothing for that. I never knew what they could do under eyes.

  11. Jaxx says:

Oh please, no woman looks like that at 65 unless she’s had some help. Admittedly, whatever she has had done has been done with a light hand and is excellent work, but work has been done on that face. At the very least she has had some peels for her complexion to look like that. I guess she considers having her skin fried off a natural process?

I was considering having a peel then a friend of mine did it. The first week a crust formed over her face and I swear she would have scared small children into hysterics. Then the PEELING started and she looked like the Swamp Thing for another week or so. She said the pain was bad at first but it was the itching drove her insane. And she was not allowed to scratch or help the peeling along in any way. She had to wear thick mittens to bed to make sure she didn’t attack her face while she slept. By the time the whole process was over I had changed my mind. But her skin did look FABULOUS when it was finally healed.

    • anon33 says:

I’m honestly curious as to why people consider peels to be in the same category as plastic surgery and something to ridicule people for? I truly don’t see the correlation, as I have had both (breast reduction.)

I had horribly damaged skin from years of incorrectly using OTC exfoliators, acne products, etc. (Proactiv stops working and starts damaging your face-I am living proof of that.) I had a series of IPL treatments before my wedding this year. Yes, you get red and crusty for one-two weeks, but this procedure SAVED MY SKIN.

It’s now been about six months since my last treatment and my skin has never looked better, even better than when I was in middle school and hadn’t started abusing my face yet. I guess it just made me so happy and feel so much better about myself that I can’t see it as a negative thing.

I suppose that celebs (like Cami D) who get these abuse them as much as they do plastic surgery. I don’t think a peel a month, every month is a good idea for anyone, as my derm recommended 4-6 treatments per year. So maybe that’s it…

      • Jaxx says:

I don’t ridicule anyone for getting a peel or plastic surgery for that matter. Congrats on your improved skin and your courage!!

What irritates me is when people lie about it and want the public to think they just naturally look great so the rest of us can feel crappy. I don’t even expect them to admit to having work done, it’s not our business. But when they bring it up themselves and then lie and say they haven’t done a thing I get steamed. If they’ve had work done and someone says they look great, why can’t they just smile and say Thank You?

Take your situation for instance. The next time someone says how beautiful your skin looks you do not owe it to them to outline how it once looked damaged and how you had a peel. You can just say Thank you and enjoy the compliment.

      • anon33 says:

Thanks for your thoughtful reply, Jaxx :). Totally agree with you on the lying about it part. It’s beyond infuriating. They must assume we are blind, or idiots…

      • Original Lucy says:

What is IPL? I have sun-damaged skin and do not want a peel…was thinking of laser, but I’m afraid…is IPL laser treatments…I would love to hear that you had it and there was no problems….

      • zenb!tch says:

        DON’T SAY PROACTIV!

I am convinced a bad reaction from that and the sun is what ruined my skin. My skin is great for 42 except for one thing. It suddenly became mottled in 2005/6. I worked for Proactiv in 2005 and I got a lot of product. I think the BP reacted with the sun when didn’t reapply the sunblock fast enough.

I get miffed when people lump peels, facials, microdermabrasion and lasers in with Plastic Surgery. What I have has a medical name – melasma. I had a tiny bit from BCPs and the sun. Which stopped when I switched to low dose BCP but still it’s not a wrinkle it’s an actual condition just like anon033’s acne was a an actual medical condition. My derm recommended IPL for my extreme melasma – I just say mottled skin. It’s the first thing on my to-do list for when my personal recession is over.

For the record Cami D had really bad acne scarring, I’m glad she is getting peeled or lasered, she’s not Nicole the Botox Queen.

Jaxx one of my best friends had that peel AND she’s a school teacher. Yes, she scared her class a bit. She said that might work for my mottledness too. It sounds cheaper but more painful.

      • Jaxx says:

@zenb!tch–I wouldn’t hold off because of fear of pain. My friend said it was a little painful the first few days but her doctor had given her pain meds and she slept a lot of it off. She said it was like a really bad sunburn and she only felt pain when she ate or moved her face in an animated fashion. Again meds took care of most of it so you’d definitely want to schedule it when you had some time off. She complained more about itching than real pain but all in all she said it was worth it all for the skin she has now. I joked that her experience scared me away but it is really more finances that keep me from doing it. If I had the money I would do it today. The discomfort only lasts a short time, her gorgeous skin is forever.

    • LAK says:

Please, my mother 65+, has lived a full eventful life that also included partying and she doesn’t look a day over 40, if that. She has no wrinkles, gray hair, stooped back, as energetic as if she were still in younger life. If I could post a picture here, I would.

Her entire side of the family has the ‘young looking gene’. I am occasionally shocked by our real ages vs our ‘visible’ age.

The joke in the family is we have a protrait in an attic somewhere…..

      • Jaxx says:

You guys are lucky in the gene pool so enjoy. But somehow I don’t think Susan drew that number. She is a natural redhead and they usually have that delicate very white skin that crinkles like tissue paper with age.

      • Lee says:

Red haired people are not predestined to age early. I have red hair, fair skin, and I’m 49 with not a wrinkle (or crinkle) in sight. Sunblock is my friend:)

      • Jaxx says:

Yes, sunblock can make all the difference. They say that much of the sun damage is done when we are children. But so many mothers are now putting sunblock on their children from birth it makes me wonder just how gorgeous their skin will still be when they are old. Will that be the Generation Who Doesn’t Age?

  12. Holly Hobby says:

And she looks fantastic! Heather Locklear, Melissa Rivers oops, Melissa Gilbert, this is how plastic surgery is done correctly!

    You go Susan!

  13. SueAnn says:

SS ~ “You shall die a peasant’s death”

    haha

  14. Mar says:

    I love her do much

  15. Nev says:

she is now going to get the pass that other older celebrities aren’t getting right?

  16. Mia says:

She looks natural….Definitely a great doc.

  17. LAK says:

It’s amazing that she was with a young man, 15yrs younger, and I think they got together when he was in his mid-late 20s just like Demi/Ashton but no one ever accused her of being a cougar, holding onto her youth etc. And even when they broke up mostly due to HIS midlife crisis (he’s given an interview about the crisis), no one pitied her and and brought up the age difference like they do with Demi…..

Demi should go and live and learn with susan.

Btw: I don’t care what she’s done. She will always be fabulous to me.

  18. Sunnyjyl says:

I want what she had done. Looking good!

  19. mew says:

It’s great she had her go on the fame. Nobody would prolly hire an acress of her looks these days. These days looks are everything, talent’s nothing.

  20. Granger says:

Susan’s been in the public eye for years, so you can bet she exercises regularly and maintains a healthy diet, both of which help if you want to age well.

However, let’s face it, she doesn’t exactly have the day-to-day worries of a “regular” person. Not saying she doesn’t have stress in her life, but it’s probably been years since she had to worry about money, and she certainly doesn’t work a “9 to 5” job that only allows her two or three vacation weeks per year. (Instead, she works six or eight weeks a year.) Plus, when her kids were younger and she was working on a film, I highly doubt Susan was stressing about picking them up from daycare on time, getting home to make dinner for the family, finishing the laundry after the kids went to bed, and trying to clean the house whenever she had a spare minute.

Yup. That kind of lifestyle would make ANYONE look younger.

  21. birdie says:

I can’t see it and that is the best plastic surgery you can get! She looks amazing and I really like that she is open about it! So much class.

  22. Dhavy says:

Why ask about plastic surgery in any interview? Why is it relevant? If the person looks as good as she does people will always think she had something done anyway so it’s never a winning situation. Unless you’re Joan Rivers who is obviously really into it and speaks about it openly, it shouldn’t be asked, I think it’s rude. IMO it’s like asking or chasing kids…you just don’t go there.

  23. dahlianoir says:

    She’s Susan Sarandon, she’s just awesome <3

  24. TeamGlanville says:

She looks great! My mom & Susan are the exact same age (65) & my mom had the EXACT surgeries done at 58 & looks natural. (She had major under bags & chin fat from aging). the reason they still look natural is b/c they have naturally good skin & do not use any botox or have anything pulled back. i’m tellin ya..the injectables are what take that natural look away! I plan on never using them..I stick to lasers! but when I hit about 50 I know I will have puffy under eye bags like most of my fam & def plan to fix it w/ surgery b/c that is the only way to truly correct stored fat under the eyes & the few real life ppl I know that have had the bags removed look GREAT. I think botox is the main reason ppl get the wonk eye look..

    • normades says:

My mom did this too (under eye bags sucked out) and it easily took off 10 years from her face. Her body is naturally amazing due to healthy eating and exercise. And her husband is 12 years younger:-))

I agree botox looks terrible and can make even a young gal (like say KK) look weird and older.

  25. sup says:

    she’s great. whatever haters

  26. NeoCleo says:

Whether she admitted to lipo or not–mo matter to me. She looks wonderful and natural. I’m glad that if she tweaked herself she used a subtle touch.

  27. Raven says:

Congrats to her for knowing when to quit. If Cindy Crawford felt like she needed some improvement, something like this would have been much better.

  28. cc says:

Okay, to the people who are saying she *must* have had a boob job b/c they were much smaller in Rocky Horror. Ummm. . . That movie was made 37 years ago. She was very petite all over then. Also, whose body is exactly the same at 65 as it was at 28? And she’s had THREE kids since then. I’m no ob/gyn, but it’s pretty common knowledge that many women’s breasts get bigger or smaller after pregnancy and stay that way.

Maybe she did have a boob job, maybe she didn’t, but citing Rocky Horror as evidence is beyond ridiculous.

  29. Beatriz says:

I love Susan Sarandon to death and you know it takes one fierce confident bitch to admit to plastic surgery!

  30. tk says:

I’m kind of surprised at your comment that you thought Susan was all-natural. It’s just not possible for someone of that age to have such a clean jawline. I recently saw “Jeff, who lives at home” and immediate reaction to her first scene was that she had work done. I also don’t think she has been completely forthcoming in terms of all the procedures that she has had (like filler). She has made a small admission that serves to quell any other additional speculation. So much bad plastic surgery has become the norm that when it’s done well, people don’t recognize it when they see it.

  31. Ranga says:

Ahhh she’s great, I really like her. I loved Rocky Horror 😀

  32. Jordan says:

I love Susan Sarandon. I’m sort of relieved she’s had work done b/c there’s no way a 65 year old should look that good naturally, LOL! She has always come across as a very confident woman and I think that gives her the sexy image more than anything.

  33. NYCGAL says:

Damn! She’s still sexy as hell! Loved her since Bull Durham!!

  34. wunder says:

In the past, Sarandon came down hard on others for getting plastic surgery. She said some very snarky things!

Glad she finally ‘saw the light’ because the work she’s had done looks really good.

    • juju says:

Ms Sarandon had a lower facelift and eye work years ago. It’s obvious in photos. I’m not so sure why she suddenly feels the need for some form of confession now. Is there a shoe about to drop?

  35. Paula says:

Yeah, she had alot more done than she is admitting! Bullshit!

  36. Erin says:

First of all, liposuction is never done under the eyes. It takes surgery to remove the bags and tighten them. As far as lipo under the chin to make the jowling better–only done in very young women who have maybe a double chin. An older women can have it done, but it takes plastic surgery to pull the loose skin up afterwards. Why don’t these actresses just stop with the plastic surgery lies.
