Scarlett Johansson is the May cover girl for Vogue. Much like Charlize Theron’s recent appearance on Vogue UK, it seems like the default-setting for fashion editors these days is, “Eh, just put a blonde on the cover and style her like Grace Kelly.” How does ScarJo do with Grace Kelly-styling (as opposed to her usual Marilyn Monroe styling)? It’s okay. Actually, I think this is one of the most boring Vogue editorials ever. Not even the leopard saves this junk. I’m actually putting some of the blame on ScarJo – considering the girl gets SO many modeling contracts, I expect more from her as a photographic subject, and she consistently fails to deliver. You can read the whole Vogue piece here – ScarJo is taking cooking lessons! Because Blake Lively loves to cook. Sorry! I just thought I would mention that. Here are some highlights from the piece:
Being older: “It feels like a lifetime ago,” Johansson says. “Am I happy I’m not 20 anymore? Yeah. Nineteen? I don’t want to be that age. It’s incredibly confusing.”
Working with Woody Allen: “I forged this unbelievable friendship with somebody who saw the potential in me at that age,” Johansson says. She would later work with Allen on Scoop and Vicky Cristina Barcelona. “Not that the parts he wrote weren’t sexy, but they had substance to them.”
Marrying Ryan Reynolds: “We always kept our story private—how we met, our wedding, everything,” she says. “It was about us.”
The divorce: Johansson describes it as “comically amicable,” but the parting was far from painless. “It was horrible,” she says. “Of course it’s horrible. It was devastating. It really throws you. You think that your life is going to be one way, and then, for various reasons or whatever, it doesn’t work out. This was something I never thought I would be doing,” she continues. “And there’s no way to navigate it. Nobody can give you the right answer. It’s never anything you want to hear. It’s a very lonely thing. It’s like the loneliest thing you’ll ever do, in some way.”
She’s almost wistful about it: “I’m not saying more time in the marriage, but just having more time with my ex and really clocking those hours of face time with the person you love, really live together and not having the pressure of two people that have these careers. . . .” She has no regrets about getting married; she describes the experience with genuine affection. “It was a beautiful thing,” Johansson says. “The falling in love and getting married and making that commitment . . . I think it’s nice to know that you’re capable of loving somebody in that way. I think it’s a rare opportunity.” She says she is still recovering and doesn’t pretend the divorce is fully in the rearview. “I don’t feel on the other side of it completely, but it gets better,” she says. “It’s still there. More than anything, it’s just that not having your buddy around all the time is weird. There’s no rule book. I think it’s just time.”
On Sean Penn: “We spent time together, yeah,” she says. “I never put a title on it, really, but we were seeing each other.” She says she was startled by the amount of media attention the pairing received. “In my marriage, funnily enough, we had relative privacy,” she says, but the fuss over her and Penn “was a little bit of an adjustment.” She says she and Penn have remained friends, and she praises his extensive relief work in Haiti. “He’s a remarkable person,” she says. “He really is.”
Being hacked: “It wasn’t just me,” Johansson says. “It was others. I don’t want to be a victim and say, ‘Oh, well’ and just hide my head in shame. Somebody stole something from me. . . . It’s sick. I don’t want people like that to slide.” The incident clearly still rattles her. “When all those photos came out, of course I go out to dinner and think, Goddamn it, these people have all seen my. . . .” Johansson’s voice trails off. “That’s terrible. You know what I mean? You can’t not think that. Even if they haven’t, you’re paranoid. I don’t want pity,” she says. Her solution, she says, was “tuning it all out”—to stop paying attention to the gossip and the endless churn of celebrity coverage. She says she had never paid much attention to it before, but she imposed a strict blackout. “I have to say I’m way happier because of it,” she says. “It’s nice. It allows me, I think, to be more creative. It’s nice not to be so self-aware.”
On playing Black Widow: “Female superheroes normally are superlame.” Natasha/Black Widow “is kind of gray. I like that about her.”
The most beautiful man in the world: Lately, Johansson has been dating a New York–based advertising creative director named Nate Naylor; they’ve been photographed by the paparazzi on the Manhattan streets and vacationing in Hawaii—the actress and the real-life Don Draper. Seeing someone out of the public eye may be a comparatively tranquil experience for Johansson, but for her new beau, dating a celebrity has been a real change. Johansson seems amused by how well Naylor has dealt with the sudden attention. “It must be very strange for him,” she says, smiling. “It’s totally bizarre. It’s an adjustment—I mean, it’s got to be an adjustment for him way more than it was for me at nineteen. But he’s really remarkably good about it.”
Is it okay if the divorce stuff doesn’t interest me at all? I’m kind of over talking about Ryan and Scar together or apart. But I do think it’s interesting that she commented on the Sean Penn thing – remember, it’s said that Sean pretty much dumped her after their whirlwind affair. I also think the Nate Naylor stuff is good – of course he’s adjusted to dating a celebrity – he thinks he’s a celebrity too! After all, he’s the most beautiful man ever.

They photoshopped the hell out of these pictures…
That’s what I thought, too. Her chest looks plastic in the first pic. I know she’s lost weight and all, but her arms are no where near that small.
She is a beautiful woman naturally. Wish they’d just let that show through without airbrushing the shit out of her.
She looks beautiful on the cover..Much prefer her as a blond
the other pictures are OK
I actually feel bad for her. It sounds like she’s really regretful about her divorce from Ryan.
I don’t think she’s regretful, just respectful, which I would hope she would be with someone she was married to. I’m sick of celebrities acting like marriage is not a big deal so it’s nice to hear one reflect on it, even if it ended, with respect.
Frankly I’m tired of celebrities who prattle on about how private they are, as if it’s a badge of honour, and in the same breathe talk about their personal lives when they have a movie to promote.
Yeah, and she should regret it! I always got the feeling she ended it because she didn’t want to compromise. I don’t know the facts, but not working out your problems with a guy who loves you is stupid. And no, I don’t think they made an effort to save their marriage.
I heard he wanted out but agreed to let her file the papers so it wouldn’t be portrayed as him ”dumping” or walking out on her. He also gave her over 1 mil as part of the settlement.
I maintain she wouldn’t be half as famous if her name weren’t Scarlett. Imagine if her name were Emily. Or Sarah.
Totally, completely, absolutely agree with you. I’ve always thought that too. The most interesting thing about her is her name.
I will say that her comments about the nude photos being leaked was really nice, and for once seemed genuine. Most celebrities try and hide it and not talk about it, but she obviously confronts it straight on, and shares her real feelings on it. She’s not one who seems secretly pleased with being peed on but tells the world she was “humiliated”.
*sad trombone noise from The Price Is Right*
I have never thought about that, but I thnk that you are right! Her name is so intriguing…nothing else about her is.
I thought the guy in the second photo was Mark Ruffalo. That was the most exciting thing about these photos. The clothing selections are excellent as always but Scarjo is snooze worthy. I barely got through the selected quotes.
1. Why is she famous at all? she really can’t act and although she is attractive she is far from the prettiest bloom in the bunch.
2. “and not having the pressure of two people that have these careers.” Really! Huh, I mean it is 2012 how many couples have a stay at home 1960’s Brady Bunch life. Really?
3. I can’t even go there on her comments about not regretting marriage because…well because I think she is an egotistical buffoon.
4. Sean Penn as your rebound…that is like going from Heaven to Hell bypassing purgatory.
5. She really is a bad interview overall.
I can’t stand her but I do think the photo spread looks beautiful. Photoshopped to shit though…
they photoshopped the hell out of that second picture, looks like a bobble head. And her boyfriend is far from the most beautiful man in the world, he’s strugglin for mediocre..
I have never understood her appeal – I do not think she is especially attractive and she seems dumb as a rock.
She is downright unattractive from some angles. I hope it’s just the hack over photoshopping job they have done.
i put the sean penn thing out of my mind, i think. ick.
As a fashion fanatic for years, I just gotta say Anna Wintour is destroying Vogue with these covers.
I also agree with this comment.
Why is Anna Wintour even still the editor of Vogue? She is so out of touch with what is in style or what looks good anymore. I seriously think I could do a better job than her. I think people are just so afraid of her and fear retribution that just won’t get rid of her. And one last comment – look at how she dresses herself! Every single time she is photographed she is wearing her great-grandmother’s drapery as a dress. Proof enough with how out of touch she is with fashion. (And this is not an ageist rant. I don’t care if she is 80 years old, as long as she has STYLE, she can be the editor of Vogue). End rant.
Seriously. Vogue covers are always terrible.
IA. The last good cover was Rihanna and that was forever ago.
Maybe they should stop using Mario Testino all the f*cking time.
Is anyone else bored with this girl? I know she’ll be everywhere for the next few weeks/months because of the avengers, but yeesh…B-O-R-I-N-G.
Love the cover…she is gorgeous! Boring…but gorgeous.
Agree chatcat, nev and ladybert62 – I don’t think this bubblehead even graduated from high school (surprise, surprise), and she thinks she’s a political savant; and yes Anne WIntour has ruined vogue by making it variety East; One theory i’ve heard is that since conglomerates own parts of film, media, publishing the fashion mags are just another marketing outlet; hence the demise of models on the covers these last 10 yrs. I’d rather joan smalls or lara stone on the cover than this overexposed nitwit.
Hmm, ‘Variety East’. I like that comparison.
I’m so sick of seeing this girl styled the same Hollywood Glam way over and over and over again… Can’t they do something else with her? Can’t she get away from it? It’s just boring.
For a fashion magazine that constantly touts itself as the best and most important, damn does Vogue have TERRIBLE styling and photography. I think ScarJo’s pretty boring, but she IS a beautiful woman, and they’ve made her look awkward and generic–just like everyone else who has the misfortune of being on their (insanely photoshopped) covers.
Well, one thing I can say about these pictures is that it proves that models, good ones, really do more than just stand in front of a camera. It must take some sort of skill, some sort of allure that’s more than beauty. Because in Scarlett’s case, she might be pretty as hell, but she makes a boring model.
Excellent point; just go on youtube type in any of the 90s supermodels (christy, linda, claudia, yasmeen, naomi, etc.) watch some of their clips, and the comparison with Scarbore is stunning and highlights how much even the fashion biz has declined in less than a generation.
Not a Scarlett Johansson fan. I don’t think she’s a good actress. I also don’t like how she comes off in interviews. I don’t get the appeal of her — besides her obvious good looks, which are a dime a dozen in Hollywood.
