I’m pretty sure this Kelly Osbourne interview is weeks old, but for some reason, media outlets are only running with it now, and I only read the piece a few days ago. Kelly participated in one of those faux-essay-interview things for Glamour Magazine – basically, Kelly answered Glamour’s questions and they wrote up in the first person, like Kelly had typed up her very own treatise. I’m including the most of the piece below – you can read the full thing here. Kelly talks a lot about body image and being a “former fat person” and how you never really feel “skinny”. She also talks about her long-standing feud with Christina Aguilera. Christina used to call Kelly “fat”. And when Kelly lost weight, it happened around the same time as Christina’s post-divorce weight gain, and so Kelly mocked Christina several times. Here’s the piece:
I call myself an FFP: former fat person. And when you’re an FFP, you will always see in yourself what people used to bully you for. I grew up on the road with my father—yes, Ozzy Osbourne—but I came from a very, very small village, where everyone called me Kelly Smelly With the Big Belly Whose Dad’s on the Telly. It hurt so badly to be judged like that. Even now I don’t consider myself skinny. But I have put a lot of hard work into my body over the years, and in the process, I’ve really learned to love myself. I want you to love yourself too, so here are my Dos & Don’ts for getting this kind of body confidence.
DON’T wish you looked like so-and-so
Women are so unforgiving of themselves. We don’t recognize our own beauty because we’re too busy comparing ourselves to other people. No, we are not all Gisele Bündchen; we’re not all Beyoncé. But I can tell you even the most beautiful girls in the world have felt insecure. And just seeing the pressure my friends Kim Kardashian and Kate Moss are under makes me never want to even be the prettiest woman in the room. Especially your own. Yes, it’s a challenge to find the positive sometimes. It takes me a moment to get there, I’m not going to lie. When I wake up in the morning and look in the mirror and I’m just like, “Oh, my God, I look so awful,” I think, “Wait. Hold on a second here. I haven’t worked this hard for this long just to go back to being that person again.” It’s like having a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other, and I try my best to ignore the devil.Sometimes it’s other people’s voices you have to shut out. That’s what happened with me and Christina Aguilera, which people don’t understand. She called me fat for years. One night on Fashion Police I said, “F—k you. Now you’re fat too.” I didn’t say I wasn’t fat. I said, “Now you know how it feels.” And I’m sorry, but I stand by that. I make a point on the show never to say anything about anybody that I wouldn’t say directly to their face. I’m famous, and she’s famous; it doesn’t mean I can’t stand up for myself. I took it for 10 years and finally decided to be like, “You know what? I’m done.” And that’s the last thing I will ever say about it.
As for that high school mentality, if you’re still hanging around people who are going to put you down, you need to stop and reevaluate your friends and move on. You don’t need those kinds of people in your life. If some dumb bitch says you’re not beautiful, don’t go on her word. What does she matter? Sorry about the language. I know, I’m awful like that. But it’s all perspective.

Which is not to follow anybody’s lead. In November I dyed my hair gray. As soon as the Chanel campaign came out with the girl with gray hair, people started saying, “Oh, I love it.” But I did it because of a magazine clipping I found when I was 13—and because I’m obsessed with The Golden Girls. Maybe I’ll do yellow next. Maybe I’ll do green. But it’s one of those things where there is no such thing as cool. I’m the most uncool person on Earth, and I love myself. I don’t want to be cool! I feel good in my own skin because I’ve accepted the fact that I’m me. That’s what’s so great about being alive and being on this planet: Everybody’s different.
Although I feel like I’m one of the few people defending Kelly Osbourne at this point, I do have to point out that last year, Kelly claimed that she “was never THAT fat” in regards to Christina Aguilera. Which… a lot of people called her on, because it was untrue. As for the other stuff… sure. She was bullied for her weight and the advice she gives to girls and women is decent enough. I don’t hate her for yelling at Christina, because I do see it as a reaction on Kelly’s part.

I thing there is huge difference between talking about abusive childhood and being called “fat”. Sorry but I can’t believe that Kelly is suffering from trauma because Christina called her 10 years ago “fat” – and I don’t believe that she was THE ONLY ONE WHO EVER SAID THAT. Give me a break. Maybe because I was a chubby (not really overweight) kid and got teased for it here and there. I’ve been fluctuating between 110-118 for 16 years and counting now but I work for it. I feel like the *Fat Gene* is always lurking in the shadows…Women just need to respect each other and chill with the insults.
I agree, Kelly should have taken the high road. There is a HUGE difference between standing up for yourself and telling others to back off…and attacking someone else. If she truly had a healthy mentality about weight, she wouldn’t feel the need to victimize someone else in the same way she was victimized. I’m with you! Kelly’s face is naturally round, and I think when she was carrying a little extra weight than she has now, maybe 15 or 20 lbs, she looked great. Very pin-uppy. Her boobs and hips were in perfect proportion.
Personally, though, I find her abrasive, so If she wants to continue with the bobblehead look that’s fine with me. No, really, she doesn’t look bad now, and certainly not unhealthy, so whatever, if she’s happier, more power to her.

the fact that kelly has a job in FASHION tells me E is pretty hard up for people…in THIS economy. Kelly is mean spirited, unattractive, and oddly shaped so she should get over “high school mentality” calling out Christina 10 years later about a personal issue. Yes, Christina is bigger than she used to be but she’s still pretty and talented. If she drops 30 pounds, Christina will be back on magazine covers looking amazing a la Back to Basics tour and Kelly will still be ugly on the inside and out. I was reading the comments yesterday on Jez regarding this topic and someone pointed out that there is audio or video proof that Christina ever called Kelly fat. Apparently it all stems from something that happened on their family reality show in a scene with her brother. I only watched the show a handful times and cannot recall that specific scene but i do remember that Kelly seemed more obsessed about her image than anyone else. At one point she ran into some fans in front of their house and she commented that they exclaimed how much thinner she looked in real life and that EVERYONE says that.
This whole statement and ill will towards Xtina seems to me nothing more than an overly privileged celebutard who can’t get over herself. Who cares. Its not like this is some sort of miraculous revelation that girls who were incredibly thin as teenagers don’t always get to keep their figures into adulthood. This is just mean and a way to keep herself relevant given the lack of talent.
But i guess its not hard to see where she where she gets her mean spirited, concern-trolling apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Actually the comments I read were just the opposite and the video showed Kelly as the one instigating the feud and Xtina(not on camera) expressing bewilderment at why Kelly hated her.
I also remember Kelly being the one who started it. She always trash-talked Christina on her family’s show and when Christina confronted her at an awards show, she was scared shitless.
I used to watch The Osbornes all the time. The scene what they were talking about was when they were all sitting at the dinner table and Kelly was talking about Christinas christmas album and she was making fun of the way she sings. To be honest, it was kinda funny.
I can’t help it, but I love this hair color. I know it’s not for everyone, but I feel like this works on her and I wish it would work on me!
As for the comments… from one formerly fat girl to another, I know this story so well. I gained weight and a former adversary called me fat after she’d lost weight. I then lost the weight, saw that she’d ballooned, and immediately found myself calling her fat in retaliation – I had never gotten over her calling me fat to begin with! It was a vicious cycle in which we both took part. If I were to see her again, I would zip my lips, because it’s sad to resort to bullying and mocking each other over something as transient as weight.
My $.02, though… not condoning or condemning, I just know how that can happen. Give the chance to do it all over again, I’d take the high road and keep my mouth shut.
I have mixed feeling on the hair color. I wouldn’t want it myself–but think it’s pretty to look at. BUT, I only like it when it is not clashing with her outfit. When the hair color works with her clothing of choice–I think it looks great. But if she wears certain patterns and colors–it can realy clash.

She’s the tiniest fat person ever. You can see that she’s petite in the shoulder/waist area but her calves and arms and my god that head makes her still look …not slim.
No matter how much weight she loses, her small bits will shrink but her heavier appendages will stay the same and by comparison, look odd. It’s not her fault, just an unfortunate body type.

Having big calves can just be a genetic thing, or she could just have muscle that we don’t see because she’s not constantly flexing. But I have big calves, and I couldn’t understand why, but then I talked to some other women who have the same problem and they said it’s just one of those things. It makes it damn hard to buy boots.
I have muscular calves and I hate it. No matter how thin I get, the calves are still thick. I make a point of not working those calve muscles because I don’t want them to get any bigger. And yes, it’s a bitch to buy boots!

They both have had weight issues, so what?

Someone on another site posted the Osbourne episode that dealt with this ‘feud’ which has always been one sided. Apparantly Xtina called Jack and was like ‘why does your sister hate me I’ve never f-ing met her before’. This was right before Papa don’t preach. I don’t condone what Kelly said, as she is being a bully, but I do kind of understand where she is coming from. In junior high and hich school, I was slightly chubby (not fat, but not slim either, if that makes sense), had bad hair, bad clothes, and pimples. I wasn’t “cool” or popular, but I did well enough and had great friends. It sucked in junior high, but by high school I got over it and realized the beautiful popular people would never be my friend, and why should I care, they weren’t even good people to begin with.
10 years later, and I don’t want to sound obnoxious or egotistical, but I am now better looking and successful than the people who bullied me when I was a kid. Yes, it does feel nice to gloat about it, but I would never bully them to their face the way Kelly is doing to Christina.
So secretly it feels good knowing I now have clear skin and great a hair, have finally found a sense of style that is my own, and that I didn’t gain a ton of weight like so many others from back in the day.
And if you go to your 10 year reunion, you’ll have the satisfaction of the former bullies seeing how you look. You didn’t need to point it out to them – which makes you different from Osbourne.

I’ve met Ozzy several times in my career as an underage groupie and then working in the media and while he is obviously not “hot”, Kelly is all Sharon. Ozzy has lovely hair and he is proportional regardless of where his weight is.

IM thinking Kelly has some major underlying issues. She is a bitter young woman with an acid tounge. Her mother as her mentor & JOan Rivers does not give her a fair chance. Sometimes things are funny but not often. They hide behind it all. I don’t think any of them know how to take the highroad. I can’t stand her on Fashion Police, when her “friends: wear some crap outfit she hems and haws and refuses to say a word.. but anyone else she has no problem telling how it is. Wish they’d get rid of her.
It’s ridiculous for Kelly to claim that she was not that fat. This is the Internet era and it’s pretty easy to find plenty of photos of Kelly where she weighs probably twice as much as Xtina at her heaviest.

I agree! Kinda funny that someone who has a job commenting on the way people look, can boo hoo about someone commenting on how she looks. And just because she says she never calls anyone fat on the show, I’m sure it doesn’t hurt anyones feeling when she talks about how horrible they look on a red carpet.
Those are usually the people who can dish it out, but not take it. The only one on there who probably could is Joan Rivers because she’s tough as nails. Kelly pulls a LeAnn Rimes any time her name is mentioned.
Think Kelly will never look ‘normal’ skinny, because her shape and bonestructure don’t suit that. Her face is very square-ish; wide jaws etc, which makes her look bigger in the face. The tiny body underneath it makes it look very bobble-head.
For her comments on Christina: i laughed a bit when I first heard it, cuz Christina always comes of as bitch to me, feeling better than others. Love her voice though. Whatever happened between these 2 women,think Cris took it too far on the awardshow, with the darts and calling out in front of a live audience.

Famous, not really, but she’s there and I notice her because I worship Ozzy Osbourne’s music. I like her hair with the dress, not so much with the green dress in the first pic. I don’t give a toss about her personal feuding.
I never really paid much attention to Aguilera before, so I just went on You Tube…I did not like the Genie in a Bottle, but I loved Candyman and enjoyed Lady Marmalade; will listen to others. One voice stood out to me in the Marmalade video, and I’m glad for the end introductions telling me it was Pink. So now to listen to some Pink.
I’m a mix of industrial future-pop (Assemblage 23 / Apoptygma Berzerk / Wumpscut) hair band late 60’s and 70’s classic rock nut, so it’s all good to find new stuff, even if it doesn’t quite fit the bill. Hell, I even liked a few early Gaga songs and the freakin’ Backstreet Boys. No hate here.
I can’t help it, but I like Kelly. She’s cleaned up her act over the last few years and is coming into her own but she’s still young and her attitude reflects the immaturity of youth. Hopefully she will continue to learn these life lessons and move on from them more quickly. I don’t care for the gray or lavender hair but I give her props for not being afraid to try something different.

Does anyone remember when Xtina “sang” at Etta James’ (I think), funeral? She looked like dammit, sounded like a cat squallin’ with his tail caught in a door, and had some NASTY looking crap running down the inside of her leg. Every artist has some less than stellar performances. Christina Aguilera has proven time and again that overall she does have talent. Even at her worst she’s still a better singer than today’s auto-tuned, synthesized, lip-syncing pop stars. You’re only judging her based on those two performances. I’ve listened to all of her albums and seen many of her live performances. She can really sing.
Considering that Christina has remained mum about all the comments Kelly makes about her, I would say Kelly is the scumbag here. Kelly, grow up, take the high road and get over it. You may be “thin” now, but you are ugly on the inside.
