Kristen Johnston promotes her new naked PETA ads

My favorite thing about PETA are their ads featuring naked celebrities. My least favorite thing about them is the way their protestors accost me in front of KFC and hand me brutal pamphlets about live chickens and some kind of killing machine (I always have my hands over my ears while loudly singing “Sha-Na-Na” by this point, so I don’t know the inhumane details, which is why I refer to it as a generic killing machine) thus shaming me into going to Subway.

My second least favorite thing about PETA is how most of the naked celebs are women. They have plenty of male members out there – hello Alec Baldwin -care to make every female creature’s fantasy come true? It’s time for you pose in the buff on top of a wild boar or something. It’s what people who really love animals do.

Because Alec was too chicken busy, Kristen Johnston stepped up and bared all on a horse.

Baby, it’s cold outside…but Kristen Johnston would rather go naked than ride in a horse-drawn carriage. PETA has released the above homage to Lady Godiva in order to take a stance against the cruel business of horse carriages. The ads will debut today in Central Park (with Johnston on hand), and will be running on more than 100 taxi tops in the city. Other celebs supporting the cause are Pink, Alec Baldwin, and Chrissie Hynde. Johnston says:

“The horses go from this horrible job where they’re pulling people through the streets of Manhattan all day to this tiny jail cell in this building that’s like a cramped parking garage. I’d say to tourists considering coming to New York, there’s so much amazing stuff to do here. But please do something else. I hope within the next year that there are no more horse-drawn carriages.”

Is that a possibility? New York City councilmember Dan Garodnick’s is proposing a bill that will phase out horse-drawn carriages, and will replace them with eco-friendly horseless carriages (“replicas of the classic Ford Model T, evoking the romance and glamour of New York’s golden years”). Now, when do we see Alec Baldwin’s homage to Bianca Jagger riding bareback in Studio 54?

[From Gothamist]

See? Everyone wants to see Alec take it off. Hopefully while screaming into a cell phone.

I generally don’t care for the way PETA goes about promoting their views, so I’m ashamed to say they work on me. Whenever I see one of those horses I feel really badly for him, and I no longer find the clip clopping so charming. Also, you can always tell when you’re walking where a carriage recently was because the smell is overpowering. I could definitely do without that. Unusual as it is, I think the councilman’s idea of replica Model Ts could be good. They’d have to make sure not to house them in anything like a “cramped parking garage” at night though, since apparently PETA is offended by that.

On the bright side, Subway’s less likely to give you salmonella. My husband was crippled for days after eating really tasty chicken there. Not that that stops me from gorging on their mac and cheese.

  2. Blah blah blah says:

The chicken in a subway sandwich probably comes from the same places. What difference does it make?

Anyway I’m not that terribly offended by horses pulling people around–it could be a lot worse–but the idea of them having to rest in tiny cells is unpleasant.

    oh well…

🙁 I dont care for PETA nor do I care for their ads. I don’t wear fur and I don’t ride carriages. But I don’t support PETA nor their extremist tactics.

  5. bizzibee says:

she needs to put some weight back on 🙁

  6. A.J. says:

Maybe PETA can rescue and then euthanize the horses much like they did with 90% of the animals they took in last year. Hypocrites.

“The horses go from this horrible job where they’re pulling people through the streets of Manhattan all day to this tiny jail cell in this building that’s like a cramped parking garage.”

I was explaining this to my husband and he said, “Isn’t that the same as people in New York? They work at these crappy jobs all day and then go sleep in their teeny tiny little apartments!”

For the people who know nothing about our horses, how they live or how many regulations we have: We have NEVER been cited for cruelty in over 150 yrs. We have 5 stables, 2 of which are state of the art. All of our horses in nyc have box stalls. (which the mounted police horses dont even have)They get ferrier care, worming, and dental and vet care on a schedualed basis…which is all recorded for the city. We are overseen by 5 agencies (we have more regulations and oversight than at-risk children). We have temp restrictions, and hr work restrctions which are overseen by the aspca. We send our horses to vacations on farms 3-4 months out of each yr. When our horses are retired they are adopted out through one of 3 adoption programs we use. We are licensed 4 times over (carriage, driver, horse, and stable) We are fully insured. Our horses were trained specifically for this job… PETA is really good at lying to people. their intentions are evil. They want to do away with all human to animal relationships. ALL of them including pets. Its disgusting. Whats even more disgusting is that people like Kristen Johnston (who dont know anything about horses in the first place) are halping them!
If you want the TRUTH you can see my videos on youtube of my horses on my farm and in their stable in nyc and at work. This is the TRUTH. I can prove everything I say….they cant! Please take a look before you believe everything they say.

Peta is so fucking dumb. Have you seen the horses that pull the carriages? Do they look distraught? They are often healthy looking, have shiny coats and good temperaments (a sign of proper care). I’m a vegan, and I’ve ridden horses my entire life. Of course it sucks that they aren’t out in pastures grazing and instead have to be in stalls at night, but Peta really needs to pick their fights. What’s going to happen to those horses once they ban horse-drawn carriages? They’ll go to slaughter because the owners can’t afford to keep them if they aren’t making money from giving lazy people rides! FUCK! If Peta cares about horses, they’ll take on the racing industry. Tiny cells = stalls you morons.

I was wondering what she has been doing with herself lately! Haven’t seen her around too much…

Off topic kinda, I loved her in 3rd Rock from the Sun. Great show. 🙂

  11. Mairead says:

Actually, I’m going to support peeba on this one. If the current laws need tightening up and more enforcement officers hired, then fair enough. Or encourage the city to licence more rickshaws and take the weight off the horses hoofs, so to speak.

Carriages are traditionally-designed to reduce stress on horses (think about it, they were always expensive animals and owners wouldn’t want them to become exhausted too easily)
Farriers design horse-shoes specifically for the hard surfaces and any defects in the horses hoof or gait.

As for the smell… please. What do you think makes the best compost for the (what I’m assuming) are beautiful flowers and plants in the city?

I must be the only person who thinks that an “eco friendly Model T replica” is a contradiction in terms. The ecological benefits of having limited horse-drawn carriages constructed of timber, fabric and metal (2 out of the 3 are renewable resources) I am convinced would out-weigh those from more glorified cars, constructed out of metal, carbonfibre or plastic and which will either need strong acid batteries to run or need to be charged by electricity which may or may not come from renewable energy.

  12. LondonParis says:

peeba76- way to go. PETA is such a hypocritical, sensationalist organization that i can hardly believe anyone listens to anything they say.

time to start doing research, folks. PETA is an extremist group and their agenda contradicts their actions on a daily basis.
i’m not fighting for chicken’s rights when some of my dearest friends can’t even get married. how anyone can fight for animals’ rights and at the same time treat PEOPLE the way PETA does is far beyond me.

  13. aleach says:

    mmmm…kfc….i want some.

  14. audrey says:

peeba76: can the horses lie down in the stalls? no, they can’t. a horse sleeping while they stand is the equivalent to you or sleeping in a chair after a long day at work.. they never get to lie down as the stables are not wide enough for them to lie down. Also, a lot of the horses are bought at auctions – they are often retired work horses which were sent to auction because they can no longer work ( lame, or have other problems).. it is very sad. i hate seeing them in NYC. also, they all drink from a common trough (people throw crap in the water when they pass by, not realizing it’s for the horses)which leads to disease.
And when they are “resting” with their heads hanging down waiting for the next fat tourist, they are breathing in the exhaust fumes from taxis and other cars.. some life. it’s not good for these animals. very sad stuff

  16. orion70 says:

    she is promoting vadgetarianism 🙂

also….I wonder what her boots are made out of hmm?

I am all for humane treatment of animals, however I lost all respect for PETA when they jumped on that Manitoba bus killing in order to compare it to those who eat meat. Way to treat a greif stricken family bozos.

  17. RubySue says:

Sorry, I can’t imagine why anyone would want to see Alec Baldwin’s fat, hairy arse naked. Except maybe for a huge laugh.

  18. Christina X says:

    PETA’s mysogynistic and fundamentally flawed.

Part of PETA’s official viewpoint is that exploiting animals is wrong, but I guess it’s okay to exploit women?

Whether a female celebrity agrees to take her clothes off or not, is again, not the issue, but the fact that PETA members approve of getting women to get naked to sell their ideas. They don’t appear to lose any sleep over someone saying “Hmmm, well since we can’t argue our way out of a paper bag, we’ll offer marginally attractive to attractive women to strip down”, but it’s wrong to put the Afflac duck in commercials?

PETA thinks they’re ethically superior to the general public, but doesn’t find anything immoral about conventionally attractive women posing nude to sell their cause? That doesn’t make sense.

  19. Iz says:

Anyone notice the horse and carraige in the background of the header photo, right through the window of the taxi?

  20. Codzilla says:

peeba76: Thank you for sharing. It’s nice to hear someone in the know giving us the straight deal.

audrey: How do you know these horses can’t lie down in their stalls? Because I’ve had horses for 20 years, and some of those years I kept my horses in stalls that easily accommodated their size. They could lie down walk around a bit. Granted, I brought them out for exercise every day, exactly like the carriage horses, so they weren’t stuck inside all the time. But they did just fine.

And in all my years, and several different barns, I’ve never encountered a stall in which a horse couldn’t lie down. Did you get that information from a Peta website? Or have you seen this for yourself?

  21. audrey says:

    peeba76:
i have seen the buildings where the horses are kept here in NYC.. and have seen photos of the stalls.Do you know that they are kept in regular bulidings and not stables? they are walked up ramps to the second and third floors. God forbid if there were a fire, these horses would have a slim chance getting out.. i don’t think the act of carriage rides is necessarily bad, it is the conditions that they live and work in which are bad. I would not be so against them if i knew they were turned out to pasture after every “shift”.. as it is, they stand and haul around a bunch of fat-assed tourists which humans profit off of and then are forced to sleep standing up.. which any vet will tell you is the equivalent of a cat nap for you or I. that is cruel..
Have you seen the shape these horses are in? It’s pretty sad.

  22. laurie says:

Her face is still super pretty – like she has had just the right amount of plastic surgery so she still looks age-appropriate but refreshed.

Concerning PeTA. They are morons who thrive off ignorance and misinformation. While the people who support them have their hearts in the right places, they definitely don’t have their brains in the right places. Thanks peeba76. Anytime animals are used in labor or research there are an amazing amount of restrictions put on their use.

  23. WTF?!?! says:

PETA is against the exploitation of animals, but exploiting women is a-ok by them, and their excuse is these gals are happy to strip for thew cause. It’s still exploitation and using women as sex objects to further their agenda is more than the appearance of conflict of interest. I’ve communicated this to them on many occasions, and they are dismissive and condescending.
PETA is full of militant nuts, and if you do research, they are much more insidious than a minor annoyance when wearing fur or eating meat. They’re also morons, and the rank-and-file mindlessly believe everything they’re told by the “higher ups”.

  24. Baholicious says:

    @Wif: I love that analogy!

PETA would rather see these animals in a can of dog food and then spaz about that too.

  25. Michele says:

Penn and Teller did a Bull*&^% ep about PETA. Watch it and understand how full of it PETA really is, animals are not equal to humans, and I will eat meat and buy leather products without feeling like I’m a bad person, thank you very much! Why KJ, Why?! You are too good for PETA!

  26. Aspen says:

Peeba! Good for you for standing up.

I get so sick of these adolescents with zero self-control in the animal rights movement.

As someone who is a TRUE advocate for animals, I grow frequently weary of trying to defend the good guys against grownups who behave like apoplectic 15 year-olds who just got told “no.”

I’m all about people educating the masses regarding the very real and horrifying cruelty to animals that exists in this country.

People like Peeba and her horses? Give me a break. Those horses are probably happier than most household dogs. They have a job to do, a wonderful set of caretakers, and every necessity and comfort thought of and provided.

Why don’t we spend less time on crap like this and more time on where our eggs, milk, and meat come from in America?

For the record: Plugging your ears and singing Sha na na na doesn’t change where your meat comes from. Buying local, organic, humanely-raised meat does.

  27. Sixxkitty says:

    peeba76 *standing ovation*

  28. GrnMtGirl says:

    Kudos Peeba76!

If you think about it – horses are treated significantly better than when people used them for everyday transportation. At least tourists are not actually riding on their backs. Rather they are being pulled in carriages that are designed to ease the horses job, in addition to wearing harnesses that are made specifically to make their jobs easier.

And, just out of curiousity – why are tourists all fat, stupid, and lazy ❓

  29. elisha says:

Ummm, Audrey? Do you even HAVE horses? They DO stand up while they sleep. The only time I see them laying down is if they are sick. Sometimes they roll around on the ground on their back to get dusty. They don’t even lay down to give birth. When they sleep, they all three huddle around together and put their heads on each other’s backs. AND GUESS WHAT? They have the run of my parents entire 107 acres and still decide to huddle together, sleeping standing up.

Peeba actually had some data, truth, and videos to back up his points. Audrey, you are just parroting PeTA heresay.

It never ceases to amaze me that PeTA thinks they know more about animals and what’s best for them than people who’ve spent their whole lives around them, living and breathing these animals.

Did you know PeTA head Ingrid Newkirk doesn’t even believe in owning dogs as pets? This despite scientists proving dogs domesticated themselves thousands of years ago because they wanted the scraps of food left behind by early humans. (That’s right, “begging” is imprinted in your dogs earliest lineage 😉 .) Hell, I can’t even force my dog to go outside when it’s raining, how does she think dogs are going to go back to no longer being pets?

  30. elisha says:

It’d be really cool if there were a comment rating system on here, like YouTube or many newspapers. I have a feeling Peeba’s would be rated pretty highly.

  31. peeba76 says:

Just to reiterate……Our horses ALL have box stalls which are large enough to accomodate DRAFT horses to lay down , roll, and turn around…no problem. Also, EVERY stable has a major fire protection system in nyc. Audry you need to do more FAT checking instead of taking petas propaganda as fact!

  32. peeba76 says:

Thanks to ALL who have “seen the light”. If you want some proof of what peta puts us through on a daily basis…I put some NEW videos up of the peta people stalking and harassing us. But whats REALLY funny, is they NEVER find anything wrong!

  33. hatch38 says:

I’ve been a Peta observer for years. They caught my attention on hunting and fishing issues. Since that time I’ve come to despise and resist them in many of their campaigns. I consider Peta unethical on most every principal they claim to represent. In fact, I assume the lower case “e” in their name stands as a symbol that they do not put much emphasis on the ethical part. Peta is the master at exploiting the conflict industry. They create a controversy, sensationalize it, then encourage people to take sides, with their side sending them plenty of donation to fight for “the cause”. They target young people who are easily influenced and often in a rebellious stage in their lives. Peta encourages young people to display public nudity which is bad enough but it garners plenty of publicity and attention for “the cause”. With an annual budget of $30 million they do not operate one single shelter. Furthermore, in year 2006 Peta euthanized 97% of the animals they took in, mostly cats and dogs. I could go on and on but from reading your comments it looks like most of you guys have Peta figured out already. If anyone has any reservations about what Peta really is promoting please check the link to the Youtube video below. Ingrid Newkirk, president and co-founder of Peta, says it in her own words, “total animal liberation”. Now that’s a “cause” that may take a few years to accomplish.

I’ve had a personal experiance with peta i thought i’d share with you regardig their ethics.last year my thirteen year old daughter recieved in the mail a magazine and some pamphlets from peta supposedly made for children.nestled in amoungest numerous articles about becoming a vegan was some disgusting pictures of animals being slaughtered. graphic pictures with guts and gore that would put a horrer flick to shame. naturally i was upset so i contacted them. i recieved only a vague response and a lecture about why i should promote the vegan life style. i responded by sending them a picture of my family eating kfc.and for the record i like the taste of meat and will continue to eat at kfc.regardless of who protests on the sidewalk
