Is Anne Hathaway being groomed to have her own ‘Catwoman’ franchise?

These are some photos of Anne Hathaway over the past two days. On Tuesday night, Anne went with Adam Shulman to the premiere of Shut Up and Play The Hits – those are the pics where she’s wearing a black mini-dress and flats. Then last night Anne was photographed entering The Ed Sullivan Theater on her way to appear on The Late Show. I keep going back and forth on her hair. Over the weekend, it looked cute and gamine. Now I’m focusing too much on her awkward baby-bangs. They’re not good.

Anyway, Anne’s press tour for The Dark Knight Rises has already begun. Oddly enough, Anne seems like she’s the only one doing press for the film so far. Is it too much to hope for some Tom Hardy interviews? Maybe some Joseph Gordon Levitt appearances? I don’t give a crap about Christian Bale – he can do whatever. I just hope everything doesn’t fall to Annie. That being said, it’s feeling more and more like Anne is going to be exceptionally “well-reviewed” for her performance as Catwoman. Christopher Nolan even told Access Hollywood that he wouldn’t be surprised if Anne got her own Catwoman spinoff film! Nolan said, “Anne is incredibly precise and articulate about the psychology of the character. She’s really built it from the ground up, it’s just a delight to watch her perform. The things she does in those heels is not to be taken lightly. She’s an incredible character and we’re very excited to see her and hopefully we’ll leave people wanting more. I certainly think she deserves [a spinoff], she’s incredible.”

Anne also has some new interviews. There’s nothing earth-shattering, but I found some of the quotes interesting. Some selected highlights:

Training for Catwoman: “It wasn’t just about looking a certain way. I had to learn how to fight. I had to become strong. I feel in situations like this — I don’t know what other actresses have gone through — but sometimes there’s a mandate that comes to you and deals with how you have to look. The way I was treated on this movie was, ‘Learn how to do what you need to do and then however you look, that’s the way the character looks. And I felt, as a woman, very protected in that way.”

Doing stunts in stilettos: “It’s part of being a woman, you just figure it out. The Devil Wears Prada was really good training for that, though. I kind of ran all up and down Manhattan. Now I just ran up and down Gotham.”

But Nolan did basically tell her she needed to be incredibly fit: “When I got the part, Chris [Nolan] said, ‘So, there’s going to a lot of fighting and when we did Inception, Joe [Joseph Gordon-Levitt] got in really good shape. Joe went to the gym for months so that when we did his fight scenes, he did his own fighting. I really liked that.’ I said, ‘Gotcha. I am reading between the lines here.’ So I went to the gym and came out when we wrapped. And it was a complete transformation. I had never done anything like that.”

Being one of the first people to read TDKR script: “I was in a room by myself reading a script. I think there was a guard outside. A part of me was trying to stay professional, like, ‘This is going to be your one chance to read it for many, many months, so really take it in’. And a part of me was like, ‘Holy s**t! This is so cool! Oh my god! I am the envy of so many million people right now’. I just could not believe my luck, so I had those two things going. Keeping it cool and, pardon the pun, bats**t crazy.”

She studied the history of Catwoman: “I picked up The Dark Knight archives, and I picked up a book that explored the history of Catwoman, which was actually really, really helpful ‘cos you just realise she can take anything. She’s so the embodiment of her time and whatever world she’s in. I’ve seen versions where she’s incredibly glamorous, and I’ve seen versions where she’s a street kid, and that kind of informed my idea in that part of the way she cons people is she seamlessly and effortlessly becomes whatever their idea of who she is, is.”

Basically, Christopher Nolan she better start working out like crazy and training all the time and then however she looked after all of that was just going to be how Catwoman looked. And that made her feel “protected”. I guess I just don’t understand that kind of discipline – I’ve never been able to DO that and I can imagine how worn out she would feel. At least it’s a spectacular payoff – playing a beloved character in what will be the biggest movie of the year.

Is “Catwoman” the reason Anne has been wearing all black lately?

She is completely asexual in my opinion.

    • sara says:

Ditto. She will never be anything other than vaguely attractive.

      • vic says:

So glad people are speaking to this. She’s completely overrated and what else is the director going to say before the movie is out. That she’s awful? P.R. b.s.

    • Meg says:

Forget about Anne- who is that hot piece next to the dumpster!?!?

    • Nina says:

I love that she has the guts to embrace her hair… really, what else can you do when it’s for a movie role? I’m so sick of extensions and the tousled I-just-got-laid look that every woman in Hollywood has. At least she’s different and memorable.

      • deehunny says:

I agree. Strange because I do think she’s asexual and I don’t think she’s has a coquettish quality enough to be considered gamine. But glad that she’s rocking the hair. No one can deny that she is an incredibly talented actress.

Biel can eat her heart out.

  2. carrie says:

Anne h always is great for thé promotion .Hardy is in Namibià.Bale hates thé promotion.JGL and Oldman will do many promotions

    • ahoyhoy says:

ITA. Anne works hard, for every role, every director, every appearance. I don’t understand all the shade cast at her….She WORKS and WORKS for her success, not doing drugs, shoplifting, and getting in bar fights.
Where’s the praise for the hard-working actress? Or do we just hate on all other women, no matter what?

  3. carrie says:

    Don’t forget nolan

  4. Jeje30 says:

She is so NOT ATTRACTIVE sorry but cat woman is suppose be a bad ass sexy chick. What were they thinking when castings her.

    • Bob says:

I agree. Nolan obviously doesn’t have an eye for hot women. Look who he’s had as the female lead in the 3 Batman moves. Katie Holmes, Maggie Gyllenhall and now Anne. None of them are HOT!

      • Akmuffin says:

Exactly, I always thought Nolan’s choice in leading ladies was so bizarre. He obviously has a thing for slightly cute brunettes with awkward face situations.

  5. beyonce's bump says:

I sure hope not! I was willing to let her slide this time as catwoman but I aint believing her role in it.

  6. Ming says:

Best broken, bitchy, psychotic, kissed-Christopher-Walken-to-death-with-a-taser Catwoman was and will forever be Michelle Pfeiffer.

    • Kinkycurlyliebe says:

      This.

    • Rhea says:

ITA. Michelle is the best!! Meow!!!!

    • Mia 4S says:

Yes Michelle was great, but her character was uniquely Burton and basically nothing like the real Catwoman. Catwoman is not a maniac brought back from the dead by a bunch of alley cats. She’s more sophisticated and playful. I’m hopeful this take is a little more true to the comics.

Seriously though, she and Keaton were lovely together but I’m sorry Batman Returns sucked!

  7. Blen says:

Everything about this girl is so neutered and bland. She is not selling this movie to me.

  8. ella says:

I’m willing to give her a chance as Catwoman. Who knows, she might surprise us.

I think she looks really cute, fresh and chic here. But it’s just not enough. We need some Hardy and JGL on this promo tour!!!

    • ahoyhoy says:

JGL is such a treasure. I love seeing him get big movies like this. SO talented!

  9. Erinn says:

I’m actually debating on whether I want to see the movie or not. JGL will be what gets me to go… I cannot stand Anne Hathaway. She is not sexy. She just isn’t. I really cannot comprehend this casting choice when the character of cat woman was so smoldering… and Anne just looks like an awkward teenaged boy.

  10. Jilliterate says:

Yawn. Catwoman is a terrible character and she’s a snooze of an actress, so I highly doubt WB is about to back a film that’s going to be a guaranteed loss. And ugh, doing stunts in shoes that cause back problems is not part of “being a woman.” Everything about Hathaway rubs me the wrong way.

  11. stellalovejoydiver says:

    NO to the spin-off.
Or wait, yes to the spin-off, because it will bomb. No one watches TDKR because of AH as catwoman.

    • ahoyhoy says:

Believe it or not, I’ve seen MANY comments from the macho-male set, DROOLING in anticipation of Anne as Catwoman. To each their own; at least she can act.

      • Eve says:

I’ve seen those too. But it always feel like these are just Batman/Nolan die-hard fans trying to counterbalance the general public’s criticism of Hathaway (being cast as Catwoman).

Had Nolan cast a piece of wood shaped like Catwoman, they’d be saying the same thing.

      • ahoyhoy says:

Sorry, eve, but Anne got that same hetero-male love LONG before she was cast in this pic. They fell in love with her boobies in “Brokeback Mountain.”
The ‘general public’ that seems to be so critical about her casting, criticize EVERY actress, for everything.

Still love you, dear, we just disagree!

      • Eve says:

🙂 I still love you too and will agree to disagree here. But my remarks weren’t a dig at Hathaway (for not being sexy — I don’t have any particular feelings towards her).

More like one at the stone cold Nolanites. Most Batman fans wanted somebody else (just check any threads about comic book movies before she was cast) but since they praise and love ANYTHING Nolan does, they had to eat it and have since been trying to convince others (and, perhpas, even themselves) that she was the right choice.

  12. Riana says:

    Sorry no.

It would flop harder than the Halle Catwoman and atleast SHE had th sexuality to pull it off.

To be honest this Batman film is hitting all the wrong stops for me.

Bane’s stupid mask and metallic grumbling. Anne’s forced sex kitten whisper that is as unnatural as Batman’s 3packs-a-day smoker voice…I’m slowly losing my excitement over the film every new commercial.

    • Eve says:

Bane’s stupid mask and metallic grumbling.

You’re right. Oh, and Bane’s mask looks A LOT like Darth Vader’s mouthpiece.

A poster on Pajiba said he sounded like Zoidberg (from Futurama) and I couldn’t agree more with that.

      • Riana says:

        Haha, Zoidberg. Perfect.

I just…I just can’t get with the mask AND the way it mutes the guy’s words.

I’m worried Nolan’s gonna hit his stride on the 3rd mark.

I recall someone saying with Heath Ledger’s death and the reality of him no longer playing the Joker it’d have been PERFECT to introduce Harleyquinn as the shattered former psychotherapist/new villain it for revenge.

It actually really intrigued me since these films never have a male hero battling a female villain.

      • Eve says:

Nolan keeps repeating (during interviews) that Bane is one of Batman’s strongest nemesis. And I’m like: “Dude, if you need to mention that, then people don’t really know who he is”.

I mean, almost everybody knows The Joker, The Riddler, Catwoman and The Penguin. But, unless they’re familiar with the comics, they have no idea who Bane is and what he does.

    • Lisa says:

Yesss, I was getting mildly excited about TDKR (or, as I’m calling it, Batman: Featuring the Cast of Inception) when the ads started showing like *two months* ago.
Now, I’m super-saturated and losing interest. Unless this movie is the most mind-blowing, exciting, thrilling movie *in the history of movies,* which it is NOT going to be, the reality will not live up to the hype.

The whole thing makes me want to put in the Michael Keaton/Tim Burton Batman and not bother with TDKR.

      • Riana says:

I agree. The overhype and misses in direction: Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, Bane being the main villain.

Haven’t really struck a chord with me. I’m kinda over it before it fully began. I’ll definitely wait and see what happens but odds are Im not rushing of opening day or night to see it.

      • Lisa says:

@ Riana: I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one feeling this way. I’m sure it’ll make a zillion dollars, but I doubt it’s going to be nearly as good as everyone thinks it will be. Nolan’s films are, for me, interesting enough while I’m watching them, but they don’t stick with me, so they’re not worth all this excitement.

Making this movie out to be like *THE EVENT OF THE SUMMER* is starting to make me want to roll my eyes.

      • Eve says:

Making this movie out to be like *THE EVENT OF THE SUMMER* is starting to make me want to roll my eyes.

They’d have to top The Avengers box office (now at almost 1,5 billion dollars) for that.

But they’re trying really hard, isnt’t it? I remember that back in 2008 they didn’t have to advertise The Dark Knight this much. That movie’s hype kind of built itself back then.

      • Lisa says:

@ Eve: I finally saw The Avengers on 7/4, and it was fine, I guess. The pacing was weird. The actors kept delivering jokes and never giving the audience time to catch up. The only two people who consistently laughed at the jokes were some guy to my far left and me. The climax went on way too long. Loki looked generally ridiculous throughout. Half the cast seemed to get the good makeup artist (RDJ, Samuel L. Jackson), and half the cast looked weird and orange.

I really hope that TDKR is better than The Avengers! If it’s not, I’m going to be thoroughly disappointed.

And yes, I realize I am very picky 🙂

      • Eve says:

Awwwwwww…you broke my heart now 😥

I LOVED The Avengers (watched it four times).

But that’s ok (meaning: I’m going to pretend I didn’t see that comment) — well, at least you saw it.

      • Lisa says:

@ Eve: Don’t be brokenhearted. It’s a matter of taste, and there is no arguing on matters of taste. You certainly aren’t alone in having liked The Avengers, if the box office numbers are any indication.

    • Mia 4S says:

LOL! Wow everyone is really embracing the “bitchy” in celebitchy today. Early buzz on the movie and her performance is generally phenomenal. Bravo to her if she makes the haters eat their words!

And can we please not talk about “movie of the year” in terms of ” oh but it made the most at the box office!” I loved the Avengers and saw it twice, but by the box office argument it wasn’t half the film that Avatar was. But it made more that a billion dollars you say? Yeah so did Transformers 3. See what I mean?

      • Lisa says:

I don’t see how not expecting a Christopher Nolan movie to be really great is somehow “bitchy” …

I don’t think anything he’s produced has been phenomenal, and I certainly don’t expect TDKR to be. I’m not a hater, either. Just a person who likes to think for herself and has very high standards 🙂

I’ve got nothing against AH. I think she’s a good actress.

      • Eve says:

        @ Mia 4S:

Oh, please. If TDKR tops (or even matches) The Avengers box office, Nolan’s Batman fans will bring that up every time anyone asks which was “the movie of the summer” — actually, they’re ALREADY doing that, predicting it may not (make as much money) and mentioning 3D inflation crap as a reason (which is not).

And that’s the comparison people will be making anyway — between The Avengers and TDKR, not between any of these two and Avatar. First because Avatar is not a comic book based movie. Secondly, because NOTHING can be compared to Avatar in terms of box office — that was a very singular phenomenom. Not even Titanic can.

And it’s not like TA was panned by the critics — as far as I know, most reviews were extremely positive.

P.S.: Both movies (Avatar and Titanic) WERE the movies of the respective years they were released — and yes, that was mostly because they’ve made that obscene amount of money and popularity.

P.P.S.: By the way, The Avengers has made more than half of what Avatar did. Let’s not get carried away here, shall we?

      • Mia 4S says:

Wow, I didn’t realize this was such serious business LOL! Of course people may not (and some seem predisposed) not to like Nolan movies; the bitchiness I was referring to is the bile and venom which has been aimed at Anne Hathaway. As for the box office stuff, the point is how much a movie earns will not dictate its staying power. Avatar has not resonated, whether or not Avengers, Dark Knight, or the Hobbit will is going to be determined by time. I think all three will for different reasons, but then I’m a movie lover, not a fangirl.

      • Eve says:

Thing is…I haven’t bitched about Hathaway. And I’m a movie lover too — by the way, nice attempt at discrediting my opinion by suggesting I’m nothing but a fangirl. You’re barking at the wrong tree though.

I loved The Avengers, I thought Joss Whedon did an amazing job in the way he brought those characters together…but if I had seen things that bothered me, believe me, I’d have said it (just like I did after watching parts of Iron Man II, The Incredible Hulk and Thor).

  13. Attalia says:

Nooooooooooooooo still to her as Catwoman: she doesn’t have the feline sexy mysterious appeal that the character has. I will see the film anyways but was totally bummed about this casting choice; plenty other suitable actresses.

  14. vanessa says:

She looks lovely with this haircut. What an interesting face.

  15. Luffy says:

When I think catwoman I think of some one seductive. Not necessarily a bomb shell, but a pretty smoking hot self assured kickass lady. I just don’t get that feel from Anne. She looks so pale and gawky and hipsterish. It’s hard to find her as batmans forbidden fruit. No? I think she’ll have to win me over with this movie because I am not convinced

  16. ladybert62 says:

I like her short hair much better than her long hair. It gives her a unique individuality whereas the long hair was the usual ho-hum hollywood starlet with long legs and long hair.

    • valleymiss says:

While I prefer Anne with longer hair, she can pull off short. It’s a gamine thing. She has such big features – lips, teeth, eyes, nose, boob – that those features make up for having shorter hair. She’s never really excited me as an actress, and she annoyed me to no end on the Oscars, but at least she *tried* and didn’t throw in the towel halfway through like Franco.

Whoever said Anne is asexual…yes. Exactly. I saw “Love and Other Drugs” and she’s topless a lot and has sexy scenes and it just seemed…off. She has a great figure, but there’s nothing innately “sexy” about her. But, whoever else said on here that she gets credit for being hardworking…yes. Absolutely. We don’t hear about Anne stumbling out of clubs or showing up late to the set. She cares about her career and it shows.

  17. lily says:

No, thank you. Is one film not enough 🙁

  18. lisa2 says:

I think she will probably be fine in the role. Nolan probably did more with her character to counter the early flack for casting. I think Ann is doing her promoting this week. The guys will come out next week before the film opens. So maybe no Ann at all after this week.

I find Ann a bit irritating. I think she is a hard worker, but she reminds me of SJP and Kate Winslet. They all act as if every performance they give is like such a emotional event. Bigger and more everything then everything. It is exhausting sometime listening to all of them in interviews. I know acting is challenging, but it ain’t rocket science.

I’ll be glad when TDK is out and gone. The fanboys are insane knocking every other film because they are so scared TDK won’t out earn The Avengers. I am over it all to be honest. All the super hero films.

  19. Josie says:

People won’t watch TDKR because of Hathaway they will watch it despite her

  20. Charlotteee says:

really, so running around in high heels is “part of being a woman”? thats the stupidest thing i’ve ever heard.

im 5’9 tall and i never wear high heels..so im less of a woman? im not womanly? since when is a type of shoe definining for my sex? ugh.

  21. Bryan says:

Hopefully a lot of the haters will be eating their hearts out come Friday. Every critic review I’ve seen so far has praised she and JGL’s performances in the movie, and not one critic of her not being “sexy” enough so far.
