The two main female characters in the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother are played perfectly by Alyson Hannigan and Cobie Smulders. Alyson’s character, Lily, is recently, and very happily, married to Marshall, and her recent pregnancy announcement would work seamlessly into the plotline of the show. Lily and Marshall have been considering starting a family, anyway. But Cobie’s character, Robin, is single, without much of a mothering instinct. Cobie Smulders, however, was very happy to announce that she and boyfriend, actor Taran Killam, are expecting a baby in the spring.
Without giving any major spoilers away for anyone behind on episodes, it is becoming possible that Robin could end up having a pregnancy written into the show as easily as Lily could. But the show is being coy about possibilities.
Executive producer Craig Thomas reveals his plans for the Mother mamas…
Craig says, “Everyone’s tremendously excited by all the impending motherhood here at How I Met Your Mother. We’re all so happy for Cobie and Aly, who will undoubtedly be amazing moms!
“And now, a public service announcement: If you’re trying to start a family, please come visit the set of How I Met Your Mother. Just come by and hang out for a day or two. We can’t legally guarantee anything, but by the time you leave, you will almost certainly be pregnant.
“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go down to our Wardrobe Department to check out the large burlap sacks Robin and Lily will inexplicably be wearing for the rest of the season.”

It might be stretching the boundaries of the sitcom to have both of them pregnant at the same time, even though, clearly, it happens all the time to people who spend alot of time together. Sitcoms have to keep it pretty simple and I don’t think a double pregnancy would keep the show plugging along at the same popular pace it has been. It’s a great show, I watch it religiously, and very nearly bought the box set of the first three seasons at Costco today. But I have high hopes for many more seasons so I decided to wait and buy it in one whole set when the show is complete like I did my Friends dvds. I’m baby crazy and even I think two babies at once, even though it’s proven to be realistic, is too much for one little half hour show.

But…I thought two babies at once was now mandatory in celebrityland?
This show is just so funny, I’m sure they’ll handle it amazingly. Maybe just by making Robin fat while Lily’s preggo.
All I know is that my friends and I have been doing ‘naked man’ poses all week. It makes me wish more people watched this show.

She’s such a pretty woman – she just seems to have one of those aura’s that have zen written all over it.
Congratulations on the baby news! Although I also hope they don’t try to write two pregnancies into the show… it will make it far to weird.
Don’t quote me on this, but last I heard, they wouldn’t have Lily pregnant on the show. I think Hannigan said that she’ll be have to carry a lot of things in upcoming episodes.
I’m kind of hoping the fact that Smulder’s and NPH’s characters getting gooey over the baby sock in the one episode is a hint to future things.
And if Robin does end up pregnant, please don’t let The Naked Man be the father.
She’s so young.
