The Emmy nominations were announced this morning, and it’s a good day to be working on Mad Men!! HUZZAH. Mad Men and American Horror Story were the two most nominated shows, with 17 nominations each. Some highlights from the nominations: Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss scored lead acting nominations (which is weird because Moss didn’t have much of a story line this year). [Full Emmy Nominations List Here]

It’s interesting to see Best Comedic Actress so packed with nominations, right? And the supporting category is good too – Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen and Kristen Wiig are all nominated too. As for supporting comedy dudes – ALL of the Modern Family men are nominated, plus SCHMIDT from The New Girl (yay!). Best supporting actress is a drama series includes nominations for Archie Panjabi (huzzah!), Christina Hendricks (she deserves it this year), Maggie Smith (awesome) and Christine Baranski (awesome). Also, Joanna Froggert from Downton got a nom, but… let’s face it, Anna’s storyline SUCKED.

One of my favorite categories? Lead actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries. Benedict Cumberbatch against Idris Elba against Clive Owen = HEAVEN. Nicole Kidman also got a nom for her lippy work in Hemingway & Gellhorn, although I think Julianne Moore will probably win for her role as Sarah Palin in Game Change.

Was Jon Hamm the answer to Lainey’s blind item from last week…the one where she was shocked the guy was cheating on his long term partner?

    • sanna says:

Yes. I don’t know why anyone would be shocked, he always gave off a douchebag vibe. To me at least.

      • Nessa says:

No way! Really? How do you know? Are these blinds revealed or something? So disappointed right now…

      • Tiffany27 says:

I’m shocked by it. He seemed like a good guy. Oh well.

      • lucy2 says:

I have no idea about their private relationship, but after listening to several very lengthy interviews/discussions with him, a douche he is not. He actually seems like a nice, funny, smart, interesting guy – at least from what I’ve seen.

      • april says:

I thought it was Jon Hamm also. I like him but now that he’s been so successful and has never married his girlfriend, it sounds like something a goodlooking guy would do. He’s definitely an alpha male. I like Jennifer but she seems like she would roll over and let him walk all over her.

Jennifer should be smart and have a ring on her finger.

    • Horace says:

      I think its Brad Pitt.

      • Julie says:

but what people be surprised if it was brad? i dont think so. whatever happened between angelina, jennifer and brad, people still think he cheated. so i doubt people would be really surprised.

also brad is one of the most famous men in the world, we would get rumours about it.

    • normades says:

I imediately thought it was him. I could really see him being into the “young funny ones” like Emma Stone.

      • mel says:

No way of knowing for sure…but I guess if you’ve read Lainey’s blog over the last couple of years and the way she talked about Hamm and the comments in her blind item piece it just kind of make sense. I wasn’t shocked either…an actor who is it hitting it big cheats on his partner…not much to see here…moving along.

      • Esmom says:

I’ve also felt like maybe things weren’t great with his g-f because she always seems to be clinging to him so tightly in photo ops. Some insecurity drove a wedge or something…

      • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

I think Hamm played the douche so well in bridesmaids because he actually *is* one.

      • mia girl says:

I also think the blind was about Hamm.
But I think in real life, Hamm is kind of like the character he plays in the movie his partner Jennifer Westfield wrote/directed/starred in, Friends with Kids.

I liked the movie, but her jacked face (which Lainey alludes to in the blind) was so distracting to me. I did fall hard for Adam Scott!

      • GoodCapon says:

She does look especially clingy in photos, doesn’t she?

    • Az says:

I’ve always thought he had to be cheating. She seems clingy though, doesn’t he?

      • v says:

A man is a douchebag and still we manage to diss the woman.Anyhoo Jon Hamm was my first guess, the clues were obvious.

      • Nev says:

        hmmmm that’s true…why r some dissing her?

he needs to stop trying to bad mouth Kim K and stop cheating on his supposed woman.if he stopped running around maybe he’d find time to make more money since that was his complaint.

        just saying.

    • cc says:

I thought it was Colin Firth! Maybe I was way off, but she said we’d be *shocked* and completely crushed by it.

And there was also something about him helping his wife career-wise and doesn’t Livia do the ‘green’ red-carpet looks sometimes?

I HOPE I’M WRONG and ANY of the rest of you are right!

      • cc says:

Okay, now that I’ve read through the comments, Jon Hamm makes way more sense. I love the Hamm, but this just doesn’t crush me the way it would if it had been Colin!

  2. sanna says:

The second season of Downton Abby was HORRIBLE. So embarrassing. And all that for Modern Family? GTFO. And Big Bang Theory over Parks and Rec? What a giant fail.

    • someone says:

am i the only one who really enjoyed season 2? i will admit that whole Bates drama was stupid and annoying, but I enjoyed the rest of it. Season 1 was the best, but I didn’t dislike season 2 as much as some people seem to.

      • Mia 4S says:

Season One was great but season 2 was a mess! They saved it with a few great moments but as usual the Emmys are way behind. Oh well, nice to see Sherlock recognized and I don’t hate the list. No Community though? Also the tradition of every film actor showing up on TV getting a nomination continues! So transparent its hilarious. I haven’t watched the Emmys in 4 years and I don’t think I will start now.

      • constant says:

I feel precisely the same way! Enjoyed season 2 a lot – just Bates got on my nerves.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Parks and Recs is one of the funniest and sweetest (that show has heart!) shows on TV. I love it so much.

I usually just ignore the Emmy comedy noms because they’re so badly chosen.

      • backwards says:

I really loved the whole Branson and Sybil thing but it took them around 3 years to finally kiss.

      • Reece says:

Me too. I didn’t hate it as much as everyone else seemed to. Agreed, Bates story was irritating as well as Daisy and Lady Mary and the guy(drawing a blank). I think it had too many story lines going at once. It needed to be streamlined then flesh out more of the fewer plots.

    • GoodCapon says:

Downton Season 2 was sooo disappointing. I love the show, but somtimes I think they’re just buying into the hype.

    • Gossipologist, PhD says:

How could Parks and Rec not be nominated?! Tragedy 🙁

  3. normades says:

    Nurse Jackie is a comedy?

  4. Joey says:

    Cumberbatch!

  5. someone says:

here comes my bitchy side, but as long as Lena Dunham does NOT win for female lead actress in comedy role, i’ll be happy for whoever takes it. especially if it’s amy poehler who does 😀 but please not that pretentious twit.

    • marie says:

ha ha count me in, I thought the same thing when I saw Lena’s name..

The only two I hope win are Jessica Lange and Denis O’Hare, otherwise I don’t care..

    • Kate says:

Completely co-sign. That show (and Ms. Dunham) is absolutely unwatchable. Surely they will finally award Amy Poehler for her work.

As for actress in a drama: as much as I adore Michelle Dockery’s Lady Mary, Claire Danes just kills it as Carrie in Homeland. She plays crazy so well. I know it is stout competition, but she is outstanding.

  6. Jenna says:

Eh; I’m tired of the Emmy’s. It feels like the same boring crap every year; meanwhile, actual good shows and actors are left out. Whatevs. -_-

    • womanfromthenorth says:

Yes me too… they overlook much of what I watch.

    • Mia62 says:

I completely agree! And no Boss nomination?? Unbelievable! It seems Kelsey Grammer is a douche in his personal life, but his character portrayal in Boss is exceptional! He is far superior than Dexter’s Hall.

  7. normades says:

I think Aaron Paul should have been nominated in the lead actor category (not supporting) and Vincent K from MM in supporting actor category.

    • Esmom says:

Yes, I was bummed not to see Vincent nominated, I thought he absolutely BROUGHT IT as Pete Campbell this season. But it was some consolation to see Jared Harris get a nod, along with Julia Ormond for playing Megan’s mom.

As for E Moss, she maybe have had less screen time but I thought she nailed each and every scene she was given. Go Mad Men!

Also it’s interesting to see how few shows (except for most sitcoms) come from the Big 3 networks.

    • Lipsy says:

True… Breaking Bad is a two-man show! Walt needs Jesse! I hope Aaron wins 🙂 Also, as much as I don’t like the Skyler character, I’m glad to see Anna Gun on the supporting actress list because she is REALLY GOOD!

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

      +1, Normades

  8. Esmom says:

I used to love Modern Family but I thought this season was disappointing compared to the first two. Even so, I guess it’s still better than most comedies.

  9. Miz Misanthrope says:

Meh…that the Emmys continue to ignore Sons of Anarchy [I know it’s run made it ‘ineligible’ but whatever] pisses me off. Like Breaking Bad it’s consistently one of the better shows on TV and the cast works their collective butts off. I think Ryan Hurst is one of the most criminally under appreciated actors out there right now. That being said…I’m putting my money on Cranston and Aaron Paul.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

      Wait, why is SOA ineligible?

      • Miz Misanthrope says:

Original Kitten – the Emmy rules state a show has to run within a certain time period in order to be eligible for nomination. That’s why last year or the year before you didn’t see any Breaking Bad noms. It sucks harder than a Lohan at a Beej’s for coke party. Its also how they keep Katy Segal from winning all the awards for actress because that woman rocks as Gemma Teller.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

I can’t believe I never heard of that! So ridiculous…the time-frame/air schedule of the show seems so completely arbitrary.
Katy Segal is A-MAZING on SOA. FU, Emmies!!!!

PS. I have sex dreams about Jax.

    • Jenny says:

yes! I just started watching sons of anarchy recently because my friend cannot stop raving about it… It is pretty damn entertaining!

  10. Masque says:

Ashley Judd for Missing? Wasn’t that a regular series (before it got canceled)?

  11. sarah says:

Giancarlo Esposito got nominated for supporting actor!!! I’m so happy! Him and everybody else at Breaking Bad are the only ones I care about.

    • sarah says:

Also, I just saw that The Hour got nominated for best writing. I’m glad to see it get recognized, it was really good!

  12. mia girl says:

I know with so many roles, its difficult to single out actors on the Game of Thrones for nominations, but it seems a crime that only Peter Dinklage gets nominated (as well deserved as it is).

There were SO many great performances this season from that cast.

    • Minime says:

I think Peter Dinklage should win it, but you’re right, there should be more nominations for GOT!

      • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

Nikoloj Coster (who plays Jamie Lannister) should have gotten a nod for sure.

    • GoodCapon says:

Halfman steals every scene he’s in. He’s so great.

They have a very solid cast, even the youngsters are quite impressive! Jack Gleeson could have been a contender IMO.

      • mia girl says:

        Agree, Jack Gleeson is great.
Fun fact… I was rewatching Batman Begins the other night, and there are a couple of scenes with a young boy (with Batman, and later Holmes protecting him)… to my surprise it was a young, sweet looking Jack Gleeson!

  13. Rux says:

Seriously….Kevin Costner?! He is the worst actor EVER…he plays the same person in every movie. Haven’t these fuckfaces seen Waterworld and the Postman. How does this guy still exist in Hollywood.

  14. backwards says:

    Community snubbed AGAIN.

  15. Tiffany27 says:

I want Breaking Bad to take home all of it. And big ups to Giancarlo Esposito. Gus was one of the scariest tv villains I’ve ever seen.

    • Susan says:

Agree 100%. As much as I also love Mad Men, I think that Breaking Bad is in a class by itself.

  16. TheOriginalKitten says:

So happy for Damien Lewis and the cast of Homeland!! Love that show.

Idris Elba. This man is so talented (and sexy). I’m so happy to see him getting recognition.

Still BREAKING BAD. I just think this past season brought it to a WHOLE new level. Hard to compete with that level of script-writing and acting.

  17. Minime says:

A bit disappointed that there are only two nominations for Game of Thrones! I’m rooting for it to win best drama series but specially for Peter Dinklage to win best supporting actor! That would be awesome :))) That and Max Greenfield (Schmidt) for best supporting actor in comedy!

    • GoodCapon says:

Only two on the ‘major’ categories, yes – but GoT was nominated for 11 categories. They didn’t get a spot in the writing or directing categories though. 🙁 Shame

      • CC says:

Yea, they kinda struggle with that in all award shows. Must be the fantasy setting and Emmy crowd.

    • Ai says:

I agree – not enough GoT love. I’ve read the books and I have to say I give major credit to the screenwriters and adapters — it has some of the best witty lines ever on TV. I will be rooting for them for some awards. Another show that didn’t get enough love is Fringe.

  18. Jenny says:

where’s COMMUNITY? I love that show so much! I got a hulu subscription just to watch the damn shows I missed on tv…. and yes I know I can stream it on my computer free elsewhere but I like to stream it on my ps3 to my tv.. bah!! terrible!

  19. Eleonor says:

I sooo want to see Jared Harris win the award. He totally deserves it. I was atonished by his Madmen performance.

  20. GoodCapon says:

Why is Peter Dinklage only nominated for Best Supporting actor? Shouldn’t he be moved up to the Best Actor category?

He has a tough competition with Aaron Paul and G. Esposito. But last year was incredibly tough too, and he walked away with the Emmy 😀

    • CC says:

My guess is yes, I guess they decided it was not worth the extra competition in an ensemble show. As long as he’s nominated, I’m happy. he’s great.

    • flan says:

Alfie Allen also did a great job this year. He had a lot more material to work with than last year (full of conflict; he’s clearly in over his head) and I would have liked seeing him nominated.

I also think Maisy Williams and Sophie Turner deserve a nomination sometime. What talent and that for such young actresses.

      • GoodCapon says:

How could I forget about Alfie? He was a stand-out in that scene with Balon and Asha (the one where he was slapped)

  21. lucy2 says:

I am extremely disappointed by the lack of nominations for Parks and Recreation, Community, and Justified (seriously?!?!).

I agree Modern Family was weaker this season, though I still found it funnier than Big Bang (only watched a few episodes, it’s so mediocre to me, but comedy is subjective) and Girls.

Happy for Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and Homeland, and a few individual nominations, but overall I’m disappointed in these.

American Horror Story is somehow a miniseries, but Downtown Abbey isn’t? And yeah, I like Downtown Abbey, but I think they went overboard with the nominations. And personally, I thought American Horror Story turned into a giant suck fest towards the end. Good for Connie and Jessica, but the show as a whole? No thanks.

  22. lizzi says:

I’m disappointed to see John Slattery ignored again for supporting actor in a drama series, but I think they went with lane since it was such an intense season for his character. ::SIGH:: I just love slattery so much.

    • Happy21 says:

Your right! John Slattery NAILED the role of Roger this year. He was absolutely more awesome this season that he has ever been. So should have been nominated!

  23. Dahlia Verlaine says:

I’m rooting for Breaking Bad and Homeland. All meh about the other nominees, some shows really fell flat after some seasons.

  24. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

Evan Peters (Tate from American Horror story) should have gotten a nod. He was amazing!

I couldn’t recall his name, so I googled him and found out he’s dating Emma Roberts. Blegh.

    • normades says:

What, She’s not with that Glee kid anymore?

      • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

Nope. Just read they broke up and she took Evan as her date to a stylist friend’s wedding. Apparently they’ve been dating for a couple of months.

  25. Bernie says:

    VEEP! amazing

  26. CC says:

I’m one of those that has no opinion about Mad Men, but I loved season 1 of American Horror Story, so I’m glad to see it get 17 noms, even if it is miniseries category (which in a way it is since they’ll change everything). I’m just scared they F-up season 2. At least a new setting means they don’t need to rehash crap, they just need to come up with a compelling story (I’m sure it won’t be about ghosts).

  27. Kristen says:

Why is American Horror Story nominated as a mini-series/movie? That was a full 12 or 13 episode season.

  28. cody says:

What no nominations for Justified or Timothy Olyphant or Walton Goggins. I am disappointed.

    • lucy2 says:

Or Jere Burns or Neal McDonough. Only Jeremy Davies got a nomination – which he certainly deserves, but I’m quite disappointed at the lack of other nominations for such a great show.

  29. Kaboom says:

How is Peter Dinklage nominated for best supporting actor when he has top billing on Game of Thrones?!

    • flan says:

I agree that this season, if there was a main-character, it would have been him.

However, in GoT sometimes some get to the foreground and then to the back again.

      MINOR SPOILER:

A few seasons down the road he will have less to do (though they’ll probably keep showing him since he’s so popular).

  30. KO says:

Louie not nominated for best comedy? Wtf? At least he was nominated for actor.

  31. Happy21 says:

I have never, ever watched the Primetime Emmy’s but am really feeling the need to watch this year. Anyone know when it is expected to air?

    • CC says:

Emmy website should have it. I have no idea, I never watch the show, I just want to know who wins.

  32. JB says:

Please, please PLEASE Amy Poehler for the win! She was so excellent this past season. I love her character so much!

  33. v says:

I’m glad for GOT,Curb your enthusiasm and Larry David(I hope he wins),30 Rock but what happened with Parks & Rec and Community?!4 supporting actors from Modern Family(this season was worse than TBBT and TBBT is really bad) but no Nick Offerman?!He’s Ron f***ing Swanson dammit!

    • Melissa says:

I know, right!? They totally d*cked over Rn Swanson 2 years in a row! They really need to get a clue.

      • Angel says:

Ron Swanson is the best character on tv, Nick Offerman is brilliant and hilarious in that role. Ron & Tammy Part 2 was the funniest thing ever, I was laughing so hard I was crying!!!!

  34. Chicagogurl17 says:

I could easily vote for 2 ppl in each catergory this yr, but they are still missing some solid performances. Where is Nick Offerman, Alan Cummings, Kyra Sedgewick, Hugh Laurie, the cast of Walking Dead and from game of thrones: maisie williams, Emilia Clarke? or Boardwalk Empire: Jack Huston, Kelly MacDonald?

  35. Sarah says:

Shame none of the brilliant Game of Thrones ladies didn’t get a nod in the Supporting Actress caragory 🙁

    • Minimi says:

Yes!!! At least Emilia Clarke should have been nominated.

    • flan says:

I’m hoping Michelle Fairley will get a nod next year. She’s a great actress and will have some good material to work with.

  36. Birdie says:

Yay Cumberbatch, so happy for him.

  37. jen7waters says:

    SherlockSherlockSherlockSherlockSherlockSherlockSherlockSherlockSherlock!!!
    :D~

    • Ms Deb says:

Sherlock to the nth degree! As well as Benedict Cumberbatch! Love that Sherlock hair!

  38. Musey says:

I’m just glad to see Ben Feldman nominated for Guest Actor. He seems like a bit of a douche in interviews, but he was pretty much the highlight of this season of Mad Men for me. Ginsberg is such a weird, awesome character, and pretty much the second I saw the scene where he tells Peggy he’s a Martian, I was like “yep. That’s an Emmy nomination.”

At first I was torn because I thought he and Jared Harris were nominated in the same category and I didn’t know who to root for, and now I’m even sadder because Jared’s up against so many other strong choices that I’m not sure he stands a chance. As much as I adore Downton Abbey, I really wouldn’t want to see Bates or Carson take home an Emmy instead of Lane Pryce, after the season he had. And Peter Dinklage was fabulous this season on Game of Thrones, but he’s already won once.

Either way, it looks like Ben Feldman has a pretty good shot, though I’m not really familiar with any of the other nominees’ performances, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed that Ginsberg gets some love.

    • Esmom says:

Ooh, I missed that. I love Ginsberg…and I don’t subscribe to the theory that some are putting out there that he’s a serial killer. In any case, his nom is well deserved.

As is Jared Harris’s. RIP Lane.

    • Eleonor says:

I’m rooting for the late Lane Price too, sorry Roger.
      Jared Harris was great!

  39. Penguin says:

    No walking dead?

  40. B says:

I am rooting for BREAKING BAD and BOARDWALK EMPIRE all the way!!!!!!!

I’m frankly tired of the Mad Men circlejerk so I am hoping that they won’t sweep the awards as usual…

  41. anthea says:

    claire danes for homeland!

    • Red Granny says:

      +1

Also: Christina Hendricks, who was so much more convincing than the script.

  42. ToastedSkin says:

    omg yes SCHMIDT!!

  43. Miz Misanthrope says:

@originalkitten – Then I recommend to you watching the UK version of Queer as Folk. Hunnam was in it when he was just a baby…and there’s lots of naked. -sigh- Now I have naked Jax in my head. I’ll be in my bunk.

  44. Amy says:

I’m disappointed that Raising Hope completely got the shaft. Martha Plimpton and Garrett Dillahunt are worth two Julie Bowens and Jesse Tyler Fergusons.

  45. Lee says:

Hugh Laurie (House MD) was robbed….AGAIN…

  46. JessSaysNo says:

God. Christina Hendricks’s boobs are so obnoxiously ‘in your face’ I want to scream. I rolled my eyes about 50 times when I saw her annoying ass pic.

  47. Hello There. I found your weblog the usage of msn. This is a really smartly written article. I will be sure to bookmark it and return to learn more of your helpful info. Thank you for the post. I’ll certainly comeback.

  48. mayla says:

I don’t know what they were thinking by leaving Parks and Rec out of the nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series! It is, by far, one of the funniest shows out there. I mean, come on, any scene with Ron Swanson in it is automatically hilarious. He reminds me so much of my boss at Dish that it’s really unnerving! Even the repeats maintain their funniness. Actually, I still have a stash of episodes from last season tucked away on my DVR that I watch all the time. I’m lucky I have the Hopper DVR that has plenty of recording space to house old and new episodes, because I never want to delete a single one! Parks and Rec is truly hysterical and deserved more Emmy love.

  49. Contri says:

    What hamm? no way!
