Hugh Jackman announced as Oscar host

Yummy yummy. Hugh Jackman, People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive (2008), has just been announced as the host of the 2009 Academy Awards. It’s a surprisingly good choice, Hugh has always seemed like an old-fashioned song-and-dance entertainer in the vein of all-time-great Oscar host Bob Hope.

Hugh Jackman will host the 81st annual Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed Friday.

The 40-year-old Australian actor, recently named People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive,” won an Emmy in 2005 for hosting the 59th annual Tony Awards in 2004. He was also nominated as host of the Tonys in 2005.

He’s never been an Oscar nominee, but was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in 2001’s romantic film “Kate & Leopold.” His other movie credits include 2006’s “The Prestige” and 2004’s “Van Helsing.”

With new producers, a new set director and even a new music director, the Academy has been hinting at an all new look and feel for this year’s Oscars telecast on Feb. 22.

Jackman’s selection is a departure from the Academy’s standard of big-name comedians. Jon Stewart, host of “The Daily Show,” hosted the ceremony in 2008 and 2006; Ellen DeGeneres was the 2007 host.

I really liked both Ellen and Jon Stewart as hosts, but the ratings sucked for them, so I guess I was relatively alone. In the past decade, just recalling from the top of my head, I believe the best-rated Oscar ceremonies were hosted by Billy Crystal. Let’s put our hands together that The Sexiest Man Alive delivers big-time come Oscar night. And then after that, maybe we can work on getting Ryan “I’m a douchebag” Seacrest fired from the E! pre-show.

He is so deliciously sexy and gorgeous and yum.

I approve of this decision wholeheartedly. Not that my opinion really matters but dammit that man is hott. With a double t.

I want to lick him all over slowly like an all day lollipop 😳
Ellen and Jon Stewart were great as hosts Kaiser agree. I will be watching Hugh front and center for this Oscar show….in my family room.

But the Oscars needs more than a change of host. They need to radically re-think the way they run the show as a whole, and they need to find a way to incorporate the Web into the process. This seems like an obvious place to incorporate interactive elements to the production. But no, they’re going to stick with the same boring format.

I really like Hugh Jackman, but no matter how great a host he is, he can’t single-handedly make that a good show.

Why? The show doesn’t need a new host, it needs to not be dull and 3 hours long.

  11. Kaiser says:

Sorry, Daisy, I meant to give you a shout-out! Daisy helped make this thread possible. 😆 😛

  12. CandyKay says:

Guess that means the Academy has assumed that Hugh Jackman won’t be getting an Oscar nomination for his role in “Australia”.

Since that movie has so far been batting .000 in awards season, it’s a pretty fair guess.

  13. Codzilla says:

As much as I love Hugh, it’s physically impossible for me to sit through that mundane mess of a show. We Tivo’d it last year, and after fast forwarding through all the boring shit, we ended up only watching a total of about 20 minutes.

The only part of the Oscars I watch any more is the beginning, when I can check out what everybody is wearing. Other than that, it’s one long snooze-a-thon.
