Thom Yorke covers Dazed & Confused, looks deranged: would you hit it?

I’m old enough to remember when Radiohead first came on the scene in the 1990s with their hit song “Creep”. I remember liking the song, and I remember also thinking “Huh, one-hit wonder.” The 90s churned out a lot of seemingly-similar alt-rock bands who only stuck around for one or two hits and then disappeared. It was months later when I heard Pablo Honey that I was like, “Oh, okay. They’re better than I was expecting.” And then My Iron Lung. And then The Bends, which is still one of the best albums to come out of the 90s (IMO). And then OK Computer brought it home.

I’m talking like I’m some major Radiohead fan – I was in college, but I’m not crazy-obsessed with them these days. I like listening to The Bends and OK Computer because those albums take me back to a simpler time in my life, and because they’re simply GREAT albums. I like the fact that Radiohead came out the Grunge Era and have been able to maintain their quirky, weird, anti-glam, punk edge. I like that when Thom Yorke is offered the cover of Dazed & Confused magazine, he poses like this for the photoshoot. I mean, he looks gross. I would not hit it, not even when I think he’s one of the most talented dudes in music today. He looks greasy and imbalanced. I can still love him and what he does and not want to get near him, right? Thom is promoting Atoms for Peace, which is one his side projects, and their album (Amok) will be out next month. Some highlights from the interview:

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has admitted that he doesn’t care if David Cameron likes his music. In a rare interview with Dazed & Confused magazine, the 44-year-old singer disagreed with musicians like Morrissey and Paul Weller, who have attacked the British Prime Minister for listening to their songs.

“I can’t say I love the idea of a banker liking our music, or David Cameron,” Yorke said. “But I also equally think, who cares? As long as he doesn’t use it for his election campaigns, I don’t care. I’d sue the living —- out of him if he did. I can’t believe he’d like [experimental Radiohead album] King of Limbs much,” he added.

Yorke was talking to the British magazine to promote his new side-project, Atoms for Peace. The band, which also features Red Hot Chilli Peppers bassist Flea and long-term Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, will release debut album Amok next month. It is the first album made by Yorke with a full band other than Radiohead – though he released the Mercury Prize-nominated solo effort The Eraser in 2006 – and will be released almost 20 years to the day since Radiohead’s debut, Pablo Honey.

Since then, Radiohead have become one of the most influential – and popular – bands of their generation, releasing a further seven acclaimed albums, including OK Computer (1997) and Hail to the Thief (2003).

Yorke also revealed in the interview that he almost had a brush with US President Barack Obama at the Copenhagen climate change summit in 2009.

“I went to the Copenhagen summit, and that permanently flipped my lid, because the whole thing was so wrong. Obama stormed straight past me after the meeting he had with China, and it was just horrible. It sort of spun me out permanently to be honest. When you’re presented with that level of stupidity it kind of blows your mind.”

However, despite writing a song about the death of weapons expert David Kelly in 2006, Yorke said he was unlikely to start including more politics in his lyrics.

“The David Kelly thing was very much an exception. I thought it was just so horribly English, so f—-d up. [But] politics is not a fun thing to write about.”

Radiohead completed their most recent tour last November, and despite Atoms for Peace having no scheduled gigs to promote their album, Yorke said he has a strict yoga regime for not succumbing to post-tour blues.

“I do a minimum of an hour’s yoga a day, usually an hour and a half. Coming off tour you have this mad adrenalin, so it’s a way of stopping the adrenalin crash. It stops me dropping.”

Amok by Atoms for Peace will be released on February 25.

[From The Telegraph]

I always feel a bit queasy when politicians start talking about their favorite bands, and when the musicians start talking about how pissed off they are about those politicians. It’s almost enough to make me feel badly for David Cameron – he can like Radiohead’s music without having to agree with Thom Yorke’s politics, and Thom Yorke can accept the prime minister as a fan without agreeing with his politics. But whatever. I guess that’s what Thom was getting at.

Also: I’m SHOCKED that Thom does yoga. SHOCKED!

I’m a generally fan of his music although sometimes it can be grating if I”m not in the mood. In any case he looks positively deranged in these photos. It’s bordering on obnoxious.

His comments on the climate change summit are interesting. Other than saying it was wrong and stupid, he gives no specifics. I don’t get his point at all.

    • GiGi says:

      Cosign 100%

And what does, “Obama stormed straight past me” mean? Um, what do you expect? You don’t want David Cameron as a fan, but you want Obama to both a) know who you are and b) stop for a chat? So pretentious!

      • Sam says:

He didn’t want attention from Obama, he was there and he said at the time, he was commenting on how Obama looked after not managing to convince China about the climate protocol. They were all frustrated.

  2. Riana says:

“Obama stormed straight past me after the meeting he had with China, and it was just horrible. It sort of spun me out permanently to be honest. When you’re presented with that level of stupidity it kind of blows your mind.”

Keyword: China. There were a lot more things happening in that moment Yorke. I would like to see him elaborate on the comment and what he really meant/felt but…vague is the name of the game I suppose.

  3. treefingers says:

    Always.

  4. Kate (newer one) says:

God, he looks like the guy you see on the Underground in London. The one whose eye you desperately try not to catch.

    • LAK says:

i am so glad i am not the only one who does that. I feel guilt all day too.

I especially hate the similar sort of chap who has taken up residency next to the only cashpoint for miles near my house. It grates beyond words that i can’t avoid him, even in this bad weather, and i can’t abandon him to the elements without giving him something, but he camps there on purpose.

      *the shame*

  5. Sam says:

Interesting is that he says on the interview that he always wanted to age disgracefully and he is doing that. He has a lot of pesonality, many things he says now he said at the beginning of his career. He is what he is, accept or leave him. That’s admirable in a world full of wannabe artists who want to please everyone or act like rebels without a cause, just to keep their “images”.

I worship Radiohead. I worship Thom Yorke. I saw Radiohead six times this summer in 4 different countries. He happened to stand next to me at a gig once (Jack White) and while I didn’t speak to him, I did practically wet my pants. Did I show him my Radiohead tattoo? No, but I wanted to.

Would I hit it? Dude, I’d do anything he told me to do, purely because he’s brilliant. He’s Thom Yorke. I’d give him a kidney.

Would I do filthy things to Jonny Greenwood? Most definitely, even if he WASN’T brilliant. Definitely the member of Radiohead I’d most like to corrupt sexually.

Seriously, guys, Radiohead. Iam even more wild for Radiohead than I am for Fassbender. Fassbender and McGregor and McAvoy COMBINED.

Sorry, I’m having a little meltdown. Radiohead!! Eek! Yay.

    • Gaby says:

Ramona you’re my twin. And I love you for loving him as I do. My obsession with Radiohead is not and it has never been healthy and I don’t care.

      • ramona says:

Gaby, I’ve always wanted a twin!!

Over the summer I had a theme: I wore Radiohead shirts to work – starting with the most obscure, progressing to the most obvious – until my students figured out the connection.

Also considering a second Radiohead tattoo but can’t narrow it down… too many good lyrics, too many choices!

    • treefingers says:

      seconded!

  7. carrie says:

who is the photographer? (Chris Cunningham?)because if the pics are creepy,it’s well made and very esthetic

i saw RADIOHEAD in concert last autumn in Paris,it’s so good (the sound!!!)

  8. carmelllooo says:

Thom Yorke can do no wrong…love him!!

  9. Eleonor says:

Totally, probably they laughed a lod while making this shoot. It looks fun!

  10. Justyna says:

The 3rd picture reminds me of the walkers from The Walking Dead. Which is great because I love both – Radiohead and TWD. I’m not surprised Thom posed like this. He is music world’s equivalent of Joaquin Phoenix – he loves making music but he hates show business and celebrity. He gives interviews and poses for photoshoots but he doesn’t play any games – he is honest (sometimes verging on arrogant) and he couldn’t care less if someone will like him or not for what he says or how he looks. This was probably much more fun than the usual: “Do I look handsome? Will they love me after seeing that?” photoshoot.

  11. gloaming says:

I have a Radiohead savings fund.

It allows me to go see them multiple times on each tour etc.

The amount of times I’ve seen Radiohead live is excessive as is the amount of collectables I’ve accumulated.

Would I hit it? Damn right I would.

  12. V4Real says:

No! Finally one I will pass on; I was beginning to feel like I was easy.

  13. Ari says:

He is a genius and amazing and he can look as crazy as he wants and I will still want to hit it lol I actually prefer him solo than with Radiohead.

  14. judyjudy says:

    These pictures freak me out.

I would totally hit it though, just so I could brag to my friends.

  15. Gaby says:

Love him. Love him. Love him. Forever. Celebitchy is so cool for posting this. I already loved you but now I can’t even say.

  16. ramona says:

For the Radiohead freaks who’ve commented on this story, just out of curiosity… favourite album?

And THANK YOU, Kaiser! More Thom, more Radiohead!!

    • Justyna says:

Is it possible to pick just one? After years of listening I’m no longer that much into Pablo Honey and I never liked Creep as much as others seemed to, so that would be the one exception. I love every other album. With the gun to my had I would probably choose Ok Computer from the 90’s and In Rainbows (both CD’s) from the 00’s but it is very close with the rest. What is yours?

    • Grace Yorke says:

Kid A! It’s also the album that made me love electronic music.

    • Gaby says:

      Kid A. Always.

      • carmelllooo says:

I couldn’t possibly pick one, I still listen to songs from The Bends, OK Computer and In Rainbows every day! Love The King of LImbs too and the new Atoms for Peace stuff. Just LOVE!

    • ramona says:

In Rainbows. Chills and shivers and shakes and twitches each and every time.

  17. rosie says:

Would I hit it? Hell yes. All day & night all. Thom is my soulmate, he just doesn’t know it yet.

  18. FassDaActor says:

Love Thom Yorke. The pictures are cool and scary!I don’t even know what the hell he is talking about with the Obam/China situation.

  19. aims says:

I’ve seen Radiohead in concert and it was amazing. One of the best shows I’ve seen. Fake plastic trees always brings tears to my eyes.

  20. Ms Kay says:

Well… If that is the happy face he makes whilst having sexual intercourse… I’d be happy to hit it ^^

    • Grace Yorke says:

He makes the most interesting faces. I bet he’s crazy in the sack. And when I mean crazy, I mean crazy good.

      • Gaby says:

Not just the faces, have you seen his moves while he sings? He’s just…God. Anyway, if you can find it, there’s a performance of Paperbag Writer with Atoms for Peace which I consider one of his best dances. I’d post it but I’m just too lazy.

  21. skuddles says:

Thom Yorke could wrap himself in rotting fish corpses and I’d still think he was amazing. As for hitting it though? No. I’ll settle for just listening to his music.

  22. Erin says:

Loved the band and Yorke since I was in 6th grade (I’m 27 now). Unfortunately haven’t had the opportunity to see them in concert cause it’s rare for them to come to the states 🙁
I also love how he doesn’t like to get too into politics and doesn’t care who listens to his music. That endears me to a band or musician even more. I think many bands have alienated their fans by becoming political.
I used to think I would hit it but now, no…just love the music.

  23. shw says:

No, not anymore. But 15 yrs ago?? Hell Yeah!
(Geek Trivia: I named the studio they built to record Ok Computer)

  24. Tiffany says:

I became a fan when he schooled Miley Cyrus. That is all.

  25. AustinMJ says:

Seriously? I want to know who WOULD hit that?
    ick.

  26. floridaseaturtle says:

I love that song, Creep, from time to time. It is a stumble-upon for me, that is eclectic and creepy, but kinda fun. The original video with Johnny Depp is cool & weird. I could do without these pics of the front-man though. I would have rather been blissfully unaware. Please pass some brain bleach, so I can go back to being innocently bad, just listening to the song.

  27. ViktoryGin says:

Well, if I ever experience a hankering for a homeless tryst.

For now, I’ll just prefer to make love to the music instead.

Have to say my fave is In Rainbows for it’s scope and well-conceived structure. It almost works as a song-cycle, which is virtually unheard of in commercial music.

Definitely will be picking up Amok.

  28. Nina says:

The combustible relationship between politics and the arts is so boring… remember the Dixie Chicks saga with Dubya?? They’ll never agree and they don’t have to. But Thom Yorke will ALWAYS be attractive to me simply due to his talent!! In short, yes, I would hit it.

  29. Amilu says:

    No. Gross.

  30. iseepinkelefants says:

I would, today, tomorrow and forever. That man is the sex.

Favorite albums: Kid A (for the memories) and In Rainbows for it’s beauty. They’re all great but if I had to choose ya know.

  31. ecyorke says:

The reason Thom Yorke was upset at the climate change summit was because the United States had specifically disagreed with the binding nature of the wording of the agreement which in and of itself actually is quite rational. The only problem was that Obama then gave a speech lecturing the diplomats on how it should be binding. Everyone’s mouths were just hanging open. Afterwards the Chinese diplomat locked himself in his room for three days and refused to talk to anyone. It was astonishing to anyone who was paying attention.
