Anne Hathaway in black Giambattista Valli at the SAGs: lovely or trashy?

Ah, the Five Stages of Hathaway. Where are you? Denial? Sadness? Annoyance? Hatred? Or Acceptance? As a Hathaway Apologist, I’m not sure Annie’s victory at the SAGs was really my night. Anne won Best Supporting Actress for Les Mis, which basically means that she’s totally winning that Oscar. And Anne knows it too. She may be working the “gaspy, overwhelmed little girl” shtick, but she knows. She’s practiced her acceptance speech, and last night was the dress rehearsal for the Oscars. So, how did she do? Eh. She annoyed me. And that pains me to admit!

Anne wore a Giambattista Valli couture dress which I really disliked. First of all, if we’re just talking about everything from the waist up, Anne has worn something remarkably similar in the not-so-distant past, right? I feel like she’s done the black sheer thing before, and recently. As for the long, sheer tutu and the biker-chick mini underneath… HOT MESS. I’m sorry, but that dress looked incredibly trashy and cheap, especially as she was walking up to accept her award. I felt like we were about to see the Hathaway Beav again. OSCAR! Wouldn’t it be great if she named her beav “Oscar”?

As for her hair and makeup… as I’ve said, I like she seems to be trying to mix up her hairstyles, but I think her hair was too flat at the Globes and too high at the SAGs. Maybe it will be “just right” for the Oscars. Her makeup is fine – not too heavy, which was a BIG problem with other ladies last night.

The dress looks cheap. And I don’t like ankle length gowns at all. To me that length looks like a little girl dress or like you had it taken up too much.

  2. T.Fanty says:

I actually found the hair and make up very pretty. It looked better on TV. The dress, however, is inexcusable.

  3. Maritza says:

I only saw the part where she accepted the award and made a comment about being lucky she has a dental plan. To me she was probably referring to how bad some of the other actresses teeth looked in the movie clips they showed (Helen Hunt and Nicole Kidman).

    • Kate says:

I’m not a fan, but I suspect she was making a bad joke about her character in Les Miz selling her teeth.

      • Izzy says:

Hadn’t even thought of it that way, good point! I took it as a shout-out to the actors’ union, I was under the impression that its members can get benefits (medical, dental, etc.) through it. I could be wrong, time to hit Google…

  4. RocketMerry says:

Unsufferable b*tch! I’m on the hatred wagon, still and forever. Ugh.

Why is she so hellbent on playing the cute, wide-eyed, innocent doe who wandered by absolute mistake in the blinding lights of fame and actually turns out to be talented and adorable? Why does she want us to see her as a modern Cinderella?! What is this, Disney indoctrination? Double ugh.

    • emmie_a says:

Yes! There are only a few celebrities I find beyond unsufferable and AnnE is on top of my list. I turned the channel when I heard her name called. I just can’t with her.

      • Amelia says:

+1 to all of the above.
        This bitch.
God, I used to love her as a kid when the Princess Diaries were out (don’t judge me – I had not yet discovered that 90% of Disney live action films suck.)
I recently realised she reminds me of someone from school who I DESPISED – rant coming up, so feel free to skip the next paragraph. Gah. This stupid, over-achieving poison-dwarf who played the I’m-so-cute-and-innocent-but-actually-I’m-also-really-mature-see-I’m-flashing-my-bits-to-the-world act as well. She wouldn’t hesitate to stick the knife in your back when you weren’t looking but always tried to portray the I’m-so-gifted-but-humble thing too.
AnnE just really reminds me of her.
Except she’s about half a foot taller.
I’m really hoping for a repeat of Eddie Murphy (?) who pretty much swept the board for Dreamgirls and then stumbled at the final hurdle, losing the Oscar.
There. Rant over. Happy Monday everyone!

      • RocketMerry says:

        @Amelia LOL
I think we all had the “friend” who pretended to be sweet and innoncent and to like us “like a sister!”, when in reality she was just trying to get as much advantage as possible from us, just to discard us when better opportunities arrived. Mine was a tall, blue-eyed blond girl. I know I’m a bitch, but I’m glad she’s nowhere without my academic help 😀

Yeah, AnnE is totally the fake “we-like-sisters” b*tch from highschool.

      • Dutch says:

Thing about the Hathaway-hate to me is that in every talk show appearance and TV interview I’ve ever seen her make before this year’s Oscar push she’s given off the “hyperactive theater kid” vibe. Her behavior now is just that vibe dialed to 100, so its not that out of step or terribly different from the way she’s always been.

    • MW says:

She comes across to me that she might have an eating disorder, or some type of disorder, where staying tiny and child-like, and now the hair — keeping it “waif-like”, in this non-sexy “pixie-do”, allows her to remain a child, instead of facing adulthood. It could be for a number of reasons that she wants to be perceived like that. Her smiling constantly also makes me curious. She may or may not be depressed, but smiling ALL the time, as she seems to, can be to hide one’s true feelings.

      • karmasabiatch! says:

MW, you’re giving that awful pixie cut a lot of power, huh? Hahaha. I don’t know that it’s anything that deep where here hairstyle is concerned. More likely, she’s she’s mortified that she’s stuck with that awful look. I remember when my mom gave me a pixie, I wanted to cry every time I looked in a mirror.
I don’t really get the Annie hate? She continues to strike me the way a few others here have described her; just a big ole geeky theatre chick.

      • karmasabiatch! says:

Oh and PS: That dress is the worst looking budget gown I’ve seen lately. Think my prom dress looked 100% better and I say this as someone who wore glasses and emo-hair to complete the stunning look. Thanks, Annie! 😀

      • Bianca says:

The pixie cut is awful… Agreed.
And does anyone else think in the first pic that her face and hair looks like Emma Stones boyfriend, Andrew Garfield. Very androgynous.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

I don’t hate her, but fake innocence is always annoying. What the world needs now is a lot more Joan Crawford and Bette Davis types, and maybe a good cat fight on the red carpet. At least that would show some emotional honesty. It would be very refreshing.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Ps: my grandfather knew Joan Crawford, btw. Hated her with a passion. Apparently she made him take his shoes off when he visited because of the white carpets. Anyone who could make my grandfather do something he did not want to do has my undying respect.

  5. alons-y alonso says:

Anne Hathaway: You are now officially dead to me. Ugh!!
I’m over all this award season stuff and the fashion doesn’t even remotely compensate. Someone wake me up when the Oscars are over….

    • Bellatrix says:

I feel yo’ pain, sista. Can’t believe there are still so many weeks left to the Oscars.

On a different note, F1 fan much? 😀

  6. MisJes says:

What. A. Fugly. Gown. The material looks cheap and the mini skirt/ballerina tulle is extremely juvenile. I feel like Vanessa Hudgens would wear this, and she’d do it better.

  7. marie says:

I didn’t get to watch, but I see she won dangit.. I’m not a fan of the dress.

  8. Chelsea's handler says:

    Over exposed and overrated.

  9. Agnes says:

the black sheer thing looks cheapo.

  10. len says:

She’s ruining my award-season. I’m so annoyed with her I don’t think I can even enjoy the Oscars anymore. Bleeeeehhhh.

  11. La Calabaza says:

Awful dress! Her style has been a disaster lately. I don’t care if it is haute couture. I only hope she’s wearing undies. So tasteless to wear borrowed dress and no underwear. Yikes!

I won’t talk about Anne in particular. She has become my least favourite celebrity/actress.

  12. gee says:

She’s proven herself to be REALLY annoying, but I like her hair a lot. It’s very brat pack.

  13. Faye says:

Since I always find myself posting mean things about Anne lately, I’ll say that her lippie is very, very pretty.

And that’s about the only positive thing I can say :).

Also, I know I am alone in this, but Anne, I beg you to grow the hair back. You look 1,000 times prettier and more feminine with it.

    • La Calabaza says:

You’re not alone. Longer hair and 10 more pounds would perform wonders on Anne…but still she will be the same insufferable b*tch.

      • Faye says:

Yeah, but at least she’d be better to look at :). The way things are now, I can’t stand to hear her *or* look at her.

      • Jen34 says:

I can’t believe I used to find her pretty. These days she is in Courtney Love territory.

  14. Post-Its says:

Hated the dress. Hated the hair. Hated the speech. Her performance in Les Mis is so overrated.

  15. Annabelle says:

    Longest acceptance speech ever.

That dress (and all the ones like it) is just ridiculously fug.

  16. Lucy2 says:

I don’t like that dress at all, but her makeup was fantastic. This speech wasn’t as pretentious as the globes speech, but I was still kind of hoping Sally would somehow pull it off and win instead.

    • MrsBPitt says:

I wanted Sally Field to win too!!! She was the best part of Lincoln for me and she always seems so cool…

  17. Snowpea says:

Is this silly girl PAYING someone for these dang awards?

Because she was the LEAST deserving and the MOST annoying. You just know she dialled down the aw shucks, who me thing in this speech after reading all the backlash from her Globes speech.

Anne, darling, you need to go back to community theatre. You’re not a very good actress and you bug me senseless.

  18. chloe says:

The dress would be okay if it wasn’t sheer and I am not a fan of the hair, either sleek it back or do some pouf in the front, it’s to flat and boyish. As for her, i just don’t understand how she is winning everything, I’ve finally seen all the Oscar nominated films and Sally kills it in Lincoln, AnnE was just ho hum, pretty much I guess she’s winning for cutting off her hair, getting real skinny and her character dying.

  19. Mia 4S says:

Well her makeup is lovely, the dress is “meh”.

I have to say while I get that people are annoyed by her (I stopped watching interviews with her a LONG time ago), that has nothing to do with the work. She did a wonderful job with Fantine and had a completely contrasting success with Dark Knight Rises. I get that opinions vary but if you disagree on those performances you must at least admit you are in the minority.

I have no problem with her winning the Oscar, it doesn’t matter if she annoys in real life or not. I mean, that violent asshole Sean Penn has two (one of them well deserved for the work).

    • Giselle says:

I must be in the acceptance stage with Anne because I agree with you, it’s not her personality, it’s the work. I won’t lie, I haven’t seen Les Mis, but her song came up on Spotify, and I have to say… it was very moving to just hear her rendition, so I can only imagine how it looked onscreen.

Anyway, I usually get annoyed when I see her giant mouth smiling and since she held back this time, she escaped my ire. I really think her career will be on a downward trajectory like other Oscar winners that peaked too soon, though.

Alright Anne, that’ll do for now. That’ll do.

  20. Miss Kiki says:

The dress is hideous. Come on AnnE it’s bad enough that you’ve been p*ssing us all off with your Oscar campaign, don’t make us hate your clothes as well.

  21. Ranunculus says:

The dress and esp. the shoes are just terrible. Her look indicates that all the campaigning and whoring herself to winning messed up her mind. She looks like she just escaped from a mental institution. Ugh she is insufferable!

  22. Shira says:

I don’t get why she was selected one of the best dressed, that dress was so… meh. Loved her shoes though.

  23. Mich says:

Meh. At least she doesn’t look like a deranged banshee in these pics.

  24. Amy says:

Looks like she got beat with an ugly stick. Her mouth is almost Joker-like.

  25. ds says:

She’s so annoying. What a boring speech. Naomi Watts looked cool while sipping the champagne while Annie talked… Poor Sally Field.

  26. epiphany says:

I’ve never seen an actor or actress work so hard for an Oscar; she can TASTE that thing!

  27. serena says:

I think I’m at the ‘hatred’ stage and I’m gonna be stuck there.

  28. Eh...I'm indifferent says:

First time commenting…but I don’t get all the Anne hate. Yeah she obviously really wants the Oscar, but would we want someone who didn’t? Think back to last year and the ever so aloof Rooney Mara. She, in my opinion, was MUCH more insufferable than Anne. At least she cares… although neurotic is not always the best approach, chick has passion.

FYI: In still photos that dress looks awful, but it looks great in motion.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I don’t get it either. I admit I’m not very acquainted with her off-screen persona, but I think she’s a fine actress.

I could see how people find her behavior a bit grating but I don’t get the rampant hatred. So many other less talented, more annoying actresses to hate, IMO.

    • Annie says:

Yeah, I agree. In fact the more people online don’t like her the more I find myself rooting for her. I can fully appreciate she can be a *bit* annoying and she could dial it back with the cutesy “who, me?” act, but as far as annoying actresses go there are many out there waaay more up there on the annoying scale than Anne. I do admit I find myself something thinking “Anne! STFU!” but not enough to put her on my loathed celebs list. At least, unlike some Anne seems to have some sort of passion, life and light about her. Perhaps that is what so irritates the stuffy, rigidly conformist commentators on here. IMO, nobody can be a truly noteworthy/memorable personality without causing at least some dissent. The Hathaways will be remembered, the J-Law’s forgotten.

  29. Kim says:

Congrats Anne Next stop Oscars You deserve it

  30. anneesezz says:

This ensemble is just one big mess from head to toe. But some people just have bad taste.

The “aw shucks” is so disingenuous and needs to stop. She is not doing a very good job of ACTING like she doesn’t think she deserves that Oscar.

  31. Nicolette says:

Add a broom and a pointed hat and you have a nifty little halloween witch costume. It would be closer to her true style don’t you think?

  32. Velouria says:

I am getting so tired of her face. Someone on here said that she looks like such a goon, and I can’t get that out of my head. I just hate her face now.

  33. Synja says:

I think Anne is a wonderful actress – comedy, drama or action – she puts her all into the character and gives a very believable performance.
One persons annoying is another persons passion and I think Anne has passion and believe her career will go the distance.
Both Annes’s GG and SAG were well deserved.
Well wishes for her Oscar nomination.

  34. Janet says:

    Yuck.

  35. Miss You Enclave24 says:

I’m still wishing upon a star that she will win every award except the Oscar and then fade into oblivion.

  36. Marianne says:

It’s not very flattering to her bust line, and I don’t like how awkward the seam looks across her stomach. All around, a disappointing look. I hope she brings it to Oscar.

  37. s says:

I was a hathaway apologist but I’m over her. that dress is beyond awful.

  38. Eleonor says:

In my heart I am rooting for Sally Fields, but I want Anne to win, so her damn Oscar campaing will finally be over, and we could ALL move on. If she doesn’t win I swear I’ll buy a totally fake award, and send it to her. So we can sleep.

  39. Cathy says:

All I can say when it comes to that dress is ewwwwww.

  40. Ms Kay says:

It kinda reminds me of Rachel Weisz dress at Golden Globes, the unfortunate style only less gown-esque with AnnE.

  41. tabasco says:

there is just nothing trashy about anne’s dress or great about j.law’s or kidman’s. *sigh* imo, this site just *always* gets it wrong on fashion. of to RCFA i go!

  42. Happy21 says:

It’s not trashy. It’s fug though.

    Sorry Anne.

I’m not really an Anne Hathaway fan. She really irritates me in pretty much everything (except the Devil Wears Prada which was just an all around cute movie). I did see her in Les Mis though and I must say for the little screen time she did have, she was pretty good and will likely win the Oscar. I can’t say though that she won me over. It takes more than one role to turn me into a fan 🙂

  43. Kris says:

I really hate to admit that from the neck up she looks pretty good. I really like how her hair is out of her face, it makes her look less like a 13 year old boy. So points on that. But I think everyone needs a really long long long break from Anne Hathaway.

Also what happened to all the old great gowns she use to wear? Now we either get extremely boring or extremely fugly.

  44. erika says:

Anne is holding my LesMiz hostage…I just can’t bring myself to see it w/ her in it. I’ve seen on stage about 5 times and by the end i’m always crying…

Overacted and sung horribly. Why didn’t they put a powerhouse musical theater actress in there? she sounds weak in I Had a Dream.

i just can’t bring myself to see it. I can’t get that image of Try Too Hard Hathaa

  45. Cool Phosphorescent Shimmer says:

So endlessly sick of Anne. She’s become The One To Root Against at the Oscars.

  46. Maria says:

What an awful dress. Looks like something made from leftovers in the fabric bin, what is that weird sheer over-skirt, really? I can see this as a mini-dress, minus all the sheer mess from the waist down.
Also, is she wearing the same shoes as Viola Davis but in black?

  47. tabasco says:

i didn’t realize how annoying she can be until this awards season. she’s not even close to the worst celebs out there, but yah, her speech last night was grating. cloying, contrived, childish. and yet self-centered. i cringed a bit when she referred to “my casts” and i don’t think she’s given seyfried a shout-out?

  48. chalkdustgirl says:

LOL, I’m from Jersey…and to hear that hair referred to as “big” just makes me giggle. :0) We refer to that height as “flat” around here…

  49. Peta says:

I’m going against the grain here but am slooowly getting back on the Annie train again. I think she looked pretty last night and I liked her dress. She’s putting some more weight back on and toning up it suits her well. Anne really can pull off two looks: cutesy-feminine or elegant-couture (she bombs when she tries to break out as with the goth Tom Ford getup she wore the night of the “vadge flash”). She did the former well last night and dare I say dialed it back a bit in her speech and demeanor.

I don’t mind over-earnest, try-hard hyper peppy Anne, but add on the recent layer of cockiness and nervous faux-humility and it’s uncomfortable to watch. But I’m willing to give her a pass since I think she’s smart enough to take advice and adjust.

  50. kristiner says:

She needs to wear long earrings. Anne has a HUGE nose so the short hair does her face no favors. All you focus on is…NOSE. And lips.

She’s no Julia Roberts with a larger nose and lips yet really pretty. Anne’s plain Jane pretty. Lower than the girl next door so she needs all the help she can get.

  51. janie says:

i am not trying to be mean or sexist, but does she have a casting couch history with harvey weinstien or something? why is she famous? she is not attractive or talented. i keep scratching my head as to why she has gotten so many roles…

  52. Caroline says:

    Pretty

  53. JulieM says:

I’m still holding out for for Amy Adams to win the Oscar. But alas, just no hope. The writing is on the wall. Begging works.

Dress, not so good. I think her hair looks nice, though.
