Page Six’s top story this morning is an “exclusive” about Sofia Vergara and how she’s expecting a baby via surrogacy. The problem? The National Enquirer is running a similar story in this week’s print and online editions, so it’s not really Page Six’s exclusive. You can read an excerpt of the Enquirer’s story here – it’s definitely more tabloidy, and the gist of that story is that Sofia “panicked” when she thought her friend/surrogate might be having a miscarriage. Page Six just stays on the whole issue of how Sofia chose her surrogate, and why:
Sofia Vergara is planning to have a baby via surrogate with her fiancé, Nick Loeb, Page Six has exclusively learned. The beautiful “Modern Family” star has asked a close friend to act as a surrogate for their child, and we’re told the process is in its extremely early stages.
A source close to the Latin beauty told us, “The child will be biologically Sofia and Nick’s baby, and she has selected a surrogate — who is a very close girlfriend — to carry the baby. A procedure has taken place, and Sofia and Nick will find out in a few weeks if it was successful, if the surrogate is pregnant, and if they will become parents.”
The source added, “A baby is something they’ve both wanted for a while, particularly Nick, who has been pushing for it. He is a little uneasy that the surrogate is Sofia’s close friend, but is very excited about becoming a father.”
We’re told Vergara, 40, has long hoped for a sister or a brother for her 21-year-old son, Manolo, but her career is currently skyrocketing.
She is filming a new season of “Modern Family,” and has been working hard to promote her Kmart clothing line. The actress’ management is also in talks about a number of movie roles, including starring opposite Jason Statham in the remake of Burt Reynolds’ 1976 movie “Heat.” She is also in discussions with Reese Witherspoon to collaborate on a comedy.
Vergara did not attend a number of Academy Awards parties last month, amid rumors she had been taken to the hospital. She wrote on Instagram that she was sick at home with the flu.
Fittingly, Vergara’s “Modern Family” character, Gloria, just had a baby, and the actress wore a prosthetic bump to appear pregnant.
The sultry star and 37-year-old “Onion Crunch king” Nick have been dating for three years. They were engaged in front of friends and family as they visited the Mayan ruins in Chichen Itza during a trip to Mexico to celebrate her birthday last summer. Her rep didn’t respond last night.
The Enquirer says that Nick was the one pushing for a baby and that Sofia agreed to do it “after much soul searching.” But Nick didn’t want Sofia “to lose her gorgeous shape” and Sofia thought a pregnancy would screw up her endorsement deals too, so she decided to ask “one of her healthiest and closest friends.” Because The Handmaid’s Tale was a work of non-fiction apparently. I mean, I’m happy for Sofia and Nick if this is what they want, but I’ve always gotten the feeling that Sofia was “over” the whole “having babies” thing (she did that when she was young and doesn’t want to do it again). It just feels like this is a band-aid surrogate baby, but whatever. It’s Sofia’s life. Congrats, I guess.

I never understood what she saw in him. He looks like a creep.
I concur.
Even moreso than Casper Smart.
He looks like Adam Sandler to me, but of course creepier!
grrr, I really don’t like this pairing.
I mean, she’d be perfect with Clooney, they both don’t want kids, but she does want to be married, but I wonder if she’d trade that off for Clooney.
I think Sofia realized she likes her cocktails too much to go 9 months without a drink.
I don’t understand this logic. You are much too busy working to have a baby. So get someone else to carry it. But actually raising the baby also takes a bunch of effort and sacrifice. And if she’s using a surrogate to avoid ruining her body, she is shallow as all get out. Add that this relationship is rocky 99% of the time there is no need to bring a baby into this mess. Insufferable Hollywood narcissists.
Yeah I tend to agree. That weirds me out. Get a cat ya know? It’s a baby-they need you to be present and involved.
Exactly. So maybe in her mind, he’ll do more of the parenting but aren’t there are all kinds of stories about his heavy partying and bar fights? Really-he’s father material?
I don’t understand the “baby ruining her body” argument. She’s already had one baby and look at her. She’s definitely not ruined.
Well, she obviously needs her appearance for work, and pregnancy in the 40s is very detrimental for your body and would be detrimental for her career… So, she can afford to solve this problem via surrogacy – why not?
I don’t know if this story is true or not but it all seems kind of self-indulgent and gross to me.
“We’re told Vergara, 40, has long hoped for a sister or a brother for her 21-year-old son, Manolo, but her career is currently skyrocketing.”
Right because you know her 21 year old son is dying for a sibling.
LOL
Right on @Bammer, 100%. Nothing about what actually goes on in Hollywood surprises me anymore.
Sofia has made it pretty clear in recent years that she doesn’t particularly want any more children at this point. If you then pair that with the fact that her relationship with Nick has been incredibly tumultuous, inconsistent and unstable from almost day 1 and that she’s “too busy”(?!) to even be bothered to carry her own child, well, this poor (hypothetical) baby doesn’t stand a chance from the start. I truly feel for him/her. More importantly, what type of women would even agree to carry and bring a child into the world for those two under said circumstances?? Especially when she knows them personally? So bizarre.
(Also THIS: “A procedure has taken place, and Sofia and Nick will find out in a few weeks if it was successful, if the surrogate is pregnant, and if they will become parents.” Ummm. You’re not “expecting” a baby if no one is actually confirmed to be pregnant yet! Ugh.)
So many beautiful children waiting for homes/needing adoption. Ill never understand surrogacy. I think its selfish.
Not everybody is strong enough to deal with adoption and post-adoption problems, rad, etc. It’s an enormous emotional challenge both for kids and parents. I find it strange when people talk about adoption as a no-big-deal…
I agree with you – I guess these folks want their own genes because they are so special.
There are celebrity women that are way way way more famous and sought after that have been pregnant and have taken time off and are still in demand and still able to do endorsements. As a woman I don’t stop buying a product because a woman is pregnant. I think depending on the woman it could bring in a new group of consumers.
as someone noted I thought she said she didn’t want kids. But I don’t hold that against her. Everyone has a right to change their mind. Same as with men. They meet the right person and they then want to have a family with them. Nothing wrong with that at all. He doesn’t have kids and that could be something that she considered. And she is not 20 something. Maybe she knew having a child could be difficult.
