Angelina Jolie warned against another pregnancy

One of my biggest peeves about tabloid journalism is the habit of seemingly-professional medical doctors to go “on the record” with a tabloid about a celebrity that the doctor is not treating, nor will ever treat. These doctors don’t know the real medical issues of a certain celebrity, and yet they will pontificate as if lecturing a class of residents. So it is with OK! Magazine’s cover story this week, “Doctors Warn Angie, No More Babies!”

There are several factual inaccuracies in the reporting – first, the assumption that the “next” Jolie-Pitt will be adopted from Ethiopia. Next, the lie that Angelina’s c-sections were “emergency”. Third, that Angelina had gestational diabetes while pregnant with Knox and Vivienne. All in all, it seems like a wholly manufactured controversy.

They are reportedly heading to Ethiopa to add another orphan to their well-loved brood, but as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt await this seventh child, they’re struggling with the news that they may never have another biological baby, sources say.

OK! has learned that because Angie’s last two pregnancies were so fraught with complications, she has been advised to wait a long time before getting pregnant again – or not to get pregnant at all.
“Her previous pregnancies ended with emergency caesarian sections,” an insider tells OK!. “She’s been told that, at the least, she should not get pregnant for a year after her last deliver, and it would be safer if she did not get pregnant, ever.”

The health complications this time around could pose a direct danger to the Changeling star, Dr. Larrian Gillespie, who has not treated Angie, tells OK!.

“Angelina is at risk of having a stroke or heart attack, and because she developed gestational diabetes, there is a high risk she’ll have it again, with the child being at risk for diabetes.”

Not being a biological mom again might be hard for Angelina, as she revealed to Vanity Fair last year that she loves being pregnant.

“It makes me feel like a woman,” she said. “Also, I happen to be with someone who finds pregnancy very sexy.”

[From OK! Magazine]

How “emergency” can Angelina’s c-sections be if she flew in her Los Angeles doctor to Namibia, like, a week in advance of Shiloh’s birth? She’s stated in the past that Shiloh was breech, and the doctor advised a c-section. It’s not a ZOMG emergency, it’s just something that happens. As far as her pregnancy this year, she’s never made any statements about gestational diabetes, and I find this arm-chair diagnosis unsettling in any medical professional. So Dr. Larrian Gillespie is on notice! They only solid medical advice I could see any doctor issuing to Angelina is the fact that a woman’s body needs time to heal after a c-section (or after vaginal birth, for that matter), so she shouldn’t get knocked up right away. But it doesn’t seem like Angelina’s going to get pregnant right now anyway, considering she starts filming on Salt in about a month. Just more drama from OK!

Picture note by JayBird: Here’s Angelina when she was pregnant with the twins this past spring.

No one takes doctors who blab in gossip rags seriously. Patient confidentiality, anyone?

  2. valou says:

Ok…lets hope that this so called doctor is made up because this is pure rubbish! Must be one of those “doctors” that did not pass their stateboard exams….how can ok print this crap. Goodness so this is where journalism lies…freaking amazing!

  3. WTF?!?! says:

Actually, it was Shiloh who gave her the advice: “Give it a rest, Mom. Maybe you could start collecting Lladro instead.”

  4. dude wtf says:

i work in a OB office & we have people who are AMA (advanced maternal age) who are still having babies. Back to back. Its not that serious!

  5. lulu says:

    “ZOMG” : annoying little phrase…

  6. Multiple C-sections says:

This is strictly a publicity ploy. For one; no physician is going to give out this sort of information to a magazine ( had to be her people releasing this crap), and second, many women have had multiple pregnancies with c-section deliveries as well as gestational diabetes. It’s a load of crap. So many lies surround this pair.

  7. NotBlonde says:

Can’t celebrities sue over this kind of nonsense? I mean, tabloids can just literally make up stuff about people and they can’t do anything about it?

I don’t even like Angelina Jolie but this just seems weird and wrong and intrusive.

  8. paris herpes says:

If anything it may seem that her eating issues might be a source of worry in terms of her getting pregnant. But I’m not expert, don’t these celebs schedule caesarians? They don’t even have vaginal births, maybe because they’re scared they might stretch out the vagina and be deemed less sexy to their significant others? Angie looks hot pregnant, not so much when she’s not, she looks pretty frail and underweight these days.

  9. Bodhi says:

No, it didn’t “have to be her people”. Its nothing but armchair diagnosis by people who have no connection to Jolie

  10. FF says:

How many C-sections has she had? I thought the only had Shiloh that way.

  11. Ria says:

Hubby is an ob/gyn. Emergency c-sections you are cut up and down. That is only done if Mommy or baby are crashing. All others are verticle. Mine was what some might consider emergent because A’s heart rate dropped, but we still had plenty of time to call in the OR crew at 3am. I was cut left to right. But I was advised to wait a year to allow my scar to have time to heal before getting pregnant again. She and I are the same age – 32/33.

  12. Judy says:

AJ had no eating problems while she was PG. Do people believe everything they read in these rags?

  13. o says:

    more lies no doubt.

why won’t they just go away?

  14. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

Gestational diabetes? I seriously doubt that. This “doctor” is full of it. How weird it would be if some random doctor were spouting off about me and he didn’t even know me.

  15. Tabby says:

I don’t get why diabetes is such a major ‘ZOMG’ illness in the US. ‘Steel Magnolias’ has a lot to answer for I suspect. I’m in the UK, had diabetes for 15 years and (so far) had no problems in pregnancy because of it. Like everything else, you just got to control it right and look after yourself. And the baby has a marginally increased risk of getting it, but it’s only a slight increase. As for AJ getting gestational diabetes, that may well be true, as it is pretty common when you carry multiples, but it goes away after pregnancy so it’s not like it’s a huge issue!
Yeah, this articles sounds like maybe a tiny grain of truth mixed in with a whole truck load of crap.

  16. Kim says:

Oh No, that is their biggest source of income these days, bio kids. The adopted ones don’t bring in as much however hyped they are. We shall see, maybe they will hire surrogates. Somehow they have to have bio kids to pimp out.

Arm chair medics, give it a rest. This can actually be diagonised by a 3 year old.

  17. Rosebudd says:

WTF?!, Lladro is great & easy to care for as it ages… PARIS HERPES, better to have vaginal births w/ incisions so doctor can sew back together really tight. Mine advised that so there wld. be “no flapping in the wind”. C-sections are really invasive & it does take quite a while for incisions to heal.

  18. Baholicious says:

@Ria: My brother was placenta previa (the placenta became detatched from the uterine wall before delivery) so he was an emergency c-section. I didn’t know there was a difference in the scars but I now I see why. Cosmetics are the last thing to worry about in a case like that.

  19. daisy424 says:

Angelina didn’t appear to me, especially in her last trimester with the twins, to suffer with GD. She would have ballooned in weight, not just from carrying twins.

You would have seen the weight in her face, ass, hands, feet, arms, not just her abdomen.

I had GD with my last child, he weighed 12 lbs at birth and I gained over 100 lbs with the pregnancy. My son weighed more than my sister’s twins put together. I went up 2 shoe sizes, couldn’t wear my wedding ring from my 5th month on. Just walking up the stairs was very difficult.

@Kim, you need a drink to kill the bug you have up your ass.

  20. sunny222 says:

Daisy – you obviously didn’t take care of yourself then. I had GD with my first and she was only 7 lb. 14 oz. and I’m pregnant with my second and have GD. I’ve gained limited weight with both (no more than 10 lbs). Don’t use GD as an excuse for why you gained 100 lbs.. that’s just unhealthy and pathetic. GD is controllable. Hate when people whine about having it..

  21. prissa says:

I had an emergency C-section and was cut the traditional horizontal way. I didn’t even know they still cut women vertically…

  22. WTF?!?! says:

Ria: “Emergency c-sections you are cut up and down. That is only done if Mommy or baby are crashing. All others are verticle.”

I don’t understand what you’re saying. “Up and down” is vertical.

And @sunny222– just because your GD was mild doesn’t mean women with severe, often life-threatening cases “don’t take care of” themselves. That’s a pretty broad stroke to paint, and just kind of a nasty snipe. Be grateful you’re having an easy time of it and don’t blame others whose experiences differ from yours. GD is controllable unless it isn’t, just like regular diabetes.

  23. Jane says:

Lulu- Couldn’t agree with you more.

And why is Angelina tilted in that photo?

  24. daisy424 says:

@sunny222; Your name certainly does not match your disposition.

How smug and self satisfied you sound. Does it make you feel superior to me by only gaining 10 lbs with your pregnancy? I wonder if you were overweight to begin with, for an OB to go along with a 10lb weight gain per pregnancy doesn’t sound quite right to me.

My starting weight with my youngest son was 122lbs. He was my 5th child (he is now 18) and I never had GD with any of my other pregnancies. My GD may have been unhealthy, but hardly pathetic.

I pity you Kiddo, you sound like an unhappy, uptight, blazing bitch to attack me with such fervor.

Remember, you opened this can of whoop-ass, not me. Don’t bother to respond, I’m not interested.

@WTF?!?!, thanks for the comment, I appreciate your kindness!

  25. psychokitten78 says:

As far as any issues with gestational diabetes and such…who knows. She could have flown the OB there close to her due date in hopes of doing a version to turn the baby and deliver naturally and it didn’t work…hence emergancy c-section.

It is common for doctors to advise waiting a bit of time with c-sections before getting pregnant again, a year is the standard caution (I was told this after both children). That is just to give the uterus time to properly heal and to avoid the risks such as the incision not being fully healed and splitting open…that can cause a need for a hysterectomy. It has happened…so it is wise to give some time for healing.

As far as someone commenting that all ’emergency’ c-sections having a vertical scar…that is simply not the case any longer. The type of incision is different for different reasons. My 1st section was emergency as my daughter was stuck in my pelvis and the labor had gone on 85 hours (back labor to boot) and there was no progress. She was becoming distressed…I have the standard bikini incision. I have a friend who is quite heavy that had to have an emergency c-section and hers was vertical..but that was due to her overall body size. From what I’ve read, with those who are heavier it’s easier with a vertical incision…the drawback is that it is harder on the uterus overall and does lead to a higher risk pregnancy in the future (from what I’ve read). Either way…it doesn’t take longer to do a bikini than a vertical incision…so being scheduled or emergency has no bearing on what type of incision it is.

    Lulu,
no kidding. Time for “ZOMG” to “STFU”!!!! Ahggggg !!! Sorry to those who love it. Peace.

    Sunny,
I love CB, I don’t comment on it alot but I love reading everybody’s thoughts. Don’t harsh on Daisy. Settle down.
Her comments are always intelligent, humorous & not at all judgemental. Your health situation may be different, pregnancies vary. I’m happy for you things worked out the way they did, but just dial it down a few notches.
