Jimmy Fallon on his geekdom: ‘The cool crowd was always beyond my grasp’

Jimmy Fallon

Before I get to the body of this post, I must issue a quick confession — I have Jimmy Fallon to thank for my “drunk song.” What, you don’t have a drunk song? Mine is Fallon’s “Idiot Boyfriend,” and I love to pop the metaphorical cork on a box of red wine and then crank it up: “I got a permanent wave, yeah! I got an Ogilvie home perm, baby. Uh! I Honk the horn can you honk the horn? Let me hear you honk it!” Moving right along…

Fallon covers GQ’s second annual Style Bible, which doesn’t look terribly stylish from the looks of the photoshoot. Just a lot of skinny, shiny suits on skinny, shiny Fallon. When this interview was conducted, the rumors of Fallon possibly taking over Jay Leno’s spot had not yet reached a fever pitch. As it turns out, the official announcement was made just yesterday that Fallon will indeed host “The Tonight Show” next season even though NBC hasn’t officially made a deal with Fallon, “but his assent is considered mostly a formality, since the move would represent a significant step up for him.” Really? I would think that Fallon might have a few reservations considering the Conan O’Brien mess just a few years ago, but I suppose NBC is confident that it can work out a good deal. This interview from GQ also broaches the topic, and Fallon gives a very diplomatic response to their curious questioning:

Jimmy Fallon

On not being cool while growing up: “The cool crowd was always beyond my grasp. Like, my parents had a fence, a chain-link fence, and my sister and I were not allowed outside it. I was only allowed to ride my bike in my backyard. Like Gus the polar bear at the zoo? That was me. Kids would say, ‘What are you doing, man? Come out.’ I was like, ‘I can’t.’ We got a rope swing. On a tree. We had to wear football helmets to ride the swing. Kids could see us. They would pull up on their bikes so they could watch the Fallon kids, so weird. You know, ‘Why are you wearing football helmets?’ We’re like, ‘So we don’t hit our heads!'”

On what he wants for his viewers: “On Late Night, it’s like we’re all in on the joke. That’s what I wanted it to be. I’m not doing something sneaky. Inside jokes, I don’t like those. We can all ride together, and everyone’s on the same thing going, ‘Aha, I know where you’re going here.’ And if we get weird, everyone knows, ‘Okay, we’ll go for that little ride of being weird.’ Or if I go, okay, I’m going to try to be Neil Young and sing ‘Pants on the Ground.’ We’re all just going to ride it out, laugh, and we’re going to be like, ‘This is so silly,’ but it’s happening. It’s…a happening. That’s such a ’60s word. But that’s what it is. It’s intimate and we’re all having the same experience. A happening. ‘Have fun’ is my message. Be silly. You’re allowed to be silly. There’s nothing wrong with it.”

On collaberating with Stephen Colbert: “Colbert, by the way, is so underrated to me I don’t even know. Can you even understand he’s doing a character for how many years now? This is unheard of in comedy. He’s doing something that people will talk about forever. We did a whole bit where we were BFFs, and we became enemies and we hated each other. And then we sang Fievel the mouse, ‘Somewhere Out There.’ Looking out the window, remembering that we were best friends. Such a smart guy. I love him so much. He’s one of my favorite guys to play with.”

On his habit of laughing during SNL sketches: “Definitely a comedy foul. Lorne didn’t like it. I didn’t like it. But the sketches I laughed in became popular. At the end, it was like the audience was waiting. The studio started to shake. Like an earthquake. I couldn’t hold it in anymore. Torture.”

Will he be the next host of “The Tonight Show”: “I mean, in the nicest way, who really cares. In the nicest way. It would be great, sure, I guess. I’d love it, but it’s not on my mind. I’m in no rush to do anything. I’m kind of a boring character in that book. I’m not in a fight with Jay or Conan, or any of them. I don’t have that story.”

Lorne Michaels on Jimmy Fallon and whether or not he believes he’ll take over The Tonight Show: “I’m not allowed to say it–yet. But I think there’s an inevitability to it. He’s the closest to Carson that I’ve seen of this generation.”

[From GQ]

Man, I remember how Fallon used to crack up on a regular basis during his “SNL” days like during a “Debbie Downer” sketch where he started giggling, and then nobody could stop laughing. I think Fallon’s laughter actually encouraged the audience to laugh even when the material wasn’t that funny. That could be part of the tactic for him taking over “The Tonight Show” too. The dude is no Johnny Carson, of course, but he does appeal to the younger crowd that NBC so covets.

I know people hated it that he laughed during SNL but honestly it made me laugh even harder. Love the “real housewives of late night” skits he’s done on his show too…

  2. boredbrit says:

He is so so hot. And Downton Sixbey is bloody funny.

    • Miss M says:

I laughed so hard watching his Downton Sixbey on youtube. Edith is hilarious, hahaha

    Love him.

  4. Anname says:

I love JImmy Fallon, he always seems to be genuinely enjoying himself and not sometimes faking it like the other late night hosts. He may not be the best interviewer but he is always enjoyable.

  5. MonicaQ says:

He’s always been a goofball and doesn’t take himself super seriously. Watching him and Rachel Maddow bartend too whenever she’s on is great.

  6. Val says:

    I have always loved him.

He made SNL hella funny too.

Most apt word for Fallon; adorable.

    I love him. So much.

A bit late on the Fallon train, but I love him too. His and Colbert’s rendition of “Friday” is forever etched in my brain. Plus Jimmy’s got the best backing band ever, The Roots.

I’d stopped watching SNL before Jimmy was a cast member, but I watch his late show almost every night. Love when he sings and plays games with his guests. They seem so much more at ease than sitting on a couch and waiting for an interview to be over.

He is just fun to watch.

Oh, and hashtags. If you miss the show you can see them online plus extra ones that didn’t make it on the show.

I think if you went to Justin Timberlake’s wedding and featured the little rodent’s new CD on your show for a week, you may now be a member of the cool crowd.

I haven’t watched Jay Leno in years, but watch Letterman. Kind of ironic Jay is looking fluffy after all of his rude comments disguised as jokes, sometimes face to face, about his guest’s weight. Just can’t tolerate mean.

  16. Marty says:

Ha! I love that that song too! “Cause I’m an idiot, and I’m your boyfriend!”

  17. Dutch says:

Knew Fallon had the chops to make late night his own when he guest hosted for Letterman when Dave was out with his heart problems a few years back.

I’m not the target demographic anymore (sobbing – where did it go????) … but I have two late night boyfriends that hubby doesn’t mind: George Strombolopoulous (CBC Canada) and Jimmy Fallon. Love the idea that it’s ok to like things, to have fun … not everyone and everything has to be Nobel prize material. They love what they’re doing and it shows. I tuck in giggling cuz of Jimmy. Would love it if he took over the Tonight Show – then I wouldn’t go into work looking like I’d been on a bender from staying up too late 😉

I love the guy. He’s really funny and seems so genuinely nice. Him and his LN crew are just brilliant.

But i am so irate over this tonight show thing. Like little whiney jay leno couldn’t bear to leave the tonight show 4 years ago, but now it’s ok? Like, seriously? Conan moved his entire family and crew out to L.A for this job and Jay was such a little bitch about it– but now, 4 years later, he’ll go. What was so significant about those four years? And I know he’ll probably just play the martyr and say he was vilified and it was the studio’s decision and blah blah but god, Jay is so annoying. This whole thing is incredibly frustrating.

He is a true geek, which is endearing. I don’t think he’s the best TV host, but he’s right up there. And cute.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Fallon when he first took over Late Night from Conan. I actually missed Conan in that slot and I did watch the Tonight Show when Conan first started (I thought he was fine on it, never understood NBC’s obsession with freaking ratings during Conan’s first year). I think it took Fallon awhile to get into the late night show hosting groove because I did not find him funny at all in the beginning.

But I don’t know, over the past year or so he has really grown on me. Especially with all the Downton Sixbey parodies they do. I showed a few episodes to my mom and she was hysterically laughing! I just hope if he does take over Tonight Show that he doesn’t get stabbed in the back by NBC. And that Jay Leno FINALLY retires graciously. He didn’t want to retire four years ago, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t want to retire now.

It’s gotten to the point where I can take Jimmy only in small doses. I liked him on SNL and, ironically, actually enjoyed him a lot during his first couple of years hosting Late Night, when he was still kind of feeling his way around. But over time, I’ve found him to be less appealing. He’s prone to excessive sucking up, even though it’s practically contractual for talk show hosts to engage in it. And although he is a talented comedic writer (love the hashtag routine, and the Downton Abbey and Real Housewives spoofs), he’s an extremely needy comic performer — he plays to his audience, but he is too often absolutely clueless as to when to kill the joke, and it gets so exhausting watching him indulging in his own humor. He doesn’t hold a candle to Carson, imo.

I hearted Conan and wish NBC hadn’t effed him over the way they did. In fact, I didn’t find him tiresome to watch at all; I thoroughly enjoyed his random wit and his delivery of it, and thought he was a sound, respectful interviewer as well.

I fall under Jimmy’s target demographic, but I doubt I’ll be tuning in to him after he succeeds Leno (though I won’t miss Leno, either — it’s high time he said his Tonight Show goodbyes). It’ll be interesting to see whether Jimmy sinks or swims after taking over for Leno, though. Much of Leno’s viewing audience is older and more conservative than Jimmy’s current one. Jimmy’s devotees will likely follow him to his new slot, of course, but we’ll have to see whether this makes up for the loss of those viewers who prefer the old-school style of Leno.

As far as him getting screwed over like Conan, Jimmy is in pretty good with the execs at NBC at this point. He also has people on his side who have influence. Plus, he somehow strikes me as a bootlicker. It’s not hard for me to imagine that he’ll play his cards very carefully so as to ensure that he remains in the good graces of those who would dictate his success as Leno’s “heir apparent.”

      • Amy says:

I don’t think it matters how long Jimmy Fallon has been working at NBC. Conan had been hosting the Late Show for about 15 years before he took over the Tonight Show and had worked at SNL previously as a writer. So he had been working for the channel much longer than Jimmy and look how the NBC execs treated him only 7 months as a new host of the Tonight show. It was all about ratings.

Jimmy could fall just as fast from NBC exec graces if he sinks when he takes over the Tonight Show.

  22. NEENAZEE says:

I’m bummed there aren’t more comments on this post but I guess it’s just not as controversial and disgusting as the Kardashians. I’ve been a Fallon fan for a long time. He and Horatio Sanz were hilarious together (if unable to control themselves) on SNL and his late night show is actually different than the rest of the pablum out there. Whatever good things happen to him I’m sure he deserves. He’s married to a smart, accomplished woman and tries to stay out of the headlines. And the Roots… I mean, really, what more is there to say? He’s a bonus!

  23. Incognita says:

Jimmy Fallon is absolutely adorbs. I always get the impression he genuinely likes his guests and isn’t all jaded by Hollywood celebrities. I can’t wait for the day he takes over The Tonight Show!

  24. eh. says:

Never really found Fallon all that funny–he’s an entertainer for sure, but not necessarily funny. I’ve lost a lot of respect for him though, since I’ve learned he’s been cheating on his wife and has been treating her terribly since she can’t get pregnant. Looks like the good guy persona he’s got going doesn’t extend to his home.
