Pippa Middleton’s party tip: throw an Asian-themed dinner party, with Asian food

Here is the cover for Pippa Middleton’s first month as a columnist/writer for Waitrose Kitchen, a British publication which – from what I can see – is kind of like a low-brow Martha Stewart Living? Something like that. The focus is on food and recipes, but I think they also get into “lifestyle” articles too. Pippa managed to get this gig after her complete publishing disaster, Celebrate, failed to sell even after the price was reduced by like 75% and after her completely basic suggestions were met with near-universal laughter and scorn. Pippa Tip: If you’re going to write a book about entertaining, include some interesting entertaining tips.

Anyway, I was geared up to mock Pippa’s first Waitrose article, but after skimming the Daily Mail’s coverage, I can’t work up the energy. While she’s still “basic,” I think she was making more of an effort to avoid #PippaTips and the sort of hilarious advice that people have come to expect. There are no pieces of advice like “If one would like ice, put water in ice trays and put those water-filled ice trays into the freezer.” Her first article is basically like “Throw a dinner party on a Friday night and make it Asian themed” and her recipes only include stuff that you could easily find at Waitrose (“no Chinatown trips!”) and could easily be done by a novice (“hardly any cooking!”). You can read more here. Pippa Tip: To do an Asian-themed dinner, it’s best to prepare a meal that has an Asian theme.

Meanwhile, Star Magazine claims that Pippa is already preparing to marry her latest boyfriend, Nico Jackson. Hasn’t she only been dating this guy for a few months?! Pippa Tip: If you want to get married, find someone rich to propose to you.

Her sister Kate may be married to a prince, but Pippa Middleton has found a fairy-tale ending all her own with British stockbroker Nico Jackson! According to insiders, Pippa, 29, is head over heels for her 35-year-old beau, and the two were recently seen engaging in massive PDA sessions while on a ski trip in Switzerland.

“Nico feels that Pippa is the one for him,” a royal source tells Star. “He made a point to look at rings in St. Moritz and will pop the question in just days.”

Pippa, who has a past of dating unsuitable men, is even ready to start a family with her new man.

“She knows her clock is ticking,” continues the insider. “And Nico has made no secret of his desire to start a family. Kate’s little bundle of joy will have a cousin around the same age.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

Eh. If Pippa wants to marry this dude, she might as well. I don’t think it’s really a love match, I think it’s more like this guy checks off most of the boxes on her list. He’s wealthy (check!), he’s average-to-good-looking (check!), he doesn’t mind that she’s a famewhore (check!), his parents presumably won’t put up a fuss if he marries a Wisteria Sister (check!), he likes to go on vacation (check!) and he already got “approval” from William & Kate (check!). I think for Pippa, one rich guy is as good as the next. Pippa is ready to settle. Pippa Tip: If you are ready to settle, just marry the first dumbass who proposes. #KimKardashianTip.

    AHAHAHAHA.

If you don’t have an Asian on hand, pick one up on your next vaca- ahem* I mean, on your next tour of the orient!

  2. GoodCapon says:

Waitrose have been very defensive with her appointment. They should just admit that they hired her for her celebrity status and not because she has any writing and cooking credentials to speak of.

That Waitrose’s editor felt the need to call the critics ‘jealous’ says a lot. What a way to treat the Waitrose fanbase! Ignore their complaints and insult them at the same time.

    • SusieQ says:

Editor of Waitrose was defending getting rid of the previous writer who was loved by many (from article I read on Daily Mail) and hiring Pippa. He compared her to some famous chef over there, bet HE was pleased to be compared to someone who tells people how to make ice cubes. The people commenting were cursing Waitrose saying they were going to boycott the place.

      • Christina says:

Yeah, I think this is a bad move for Waitrose. It’s an expensive chain and people who shop there know their food (or at least like to think they do!). They’re not going to be impressed by some nobody who happens to be the sister of some other nobody who happens to be married to a prince. Especially when she has NO culinary experience whatsoever. Some unspecified ‘job’ in ‘party planning’ – which she only got through her parents’ connections – doesn’t mean you have a clue about cooking. As Pippa’s tips constantly prove.

    • DGO says:

Makes you wonder if Caterpillar Brows is sleeping with a certain someone.

    • Mich says:

I don’t know anything about this editor but I read his defensive and insulting comments the other day and was appalled!! What a star-struck idiot!!

To me, he demonstrated that he knows little and cares less about his readership. Any chance he could end up losing his job over this?

    • linlin says:

I really don’t understand why they hired her, it seems a really bad move. I guess I could see how they thought it might be a good thing right after the wedding when she was really popular, but since then a lot of things happened, there were scandals (the gun thing), her book failed ect. After the spectacular failure of the book I really don’t see how they would think that they would profite by the association with her.

    • Agnes says:

      Is that a supermarket?

  3. Devon says:

“a British publication which – from what I can see – is kind of like a low-brow Martha Stewart Living?”

Definitely not. Waitrose is a chain of grocery stores here in the UK. They are the most expensive of the main chains and, in my opinion, the nicest. I wish there were more than 2 in Edinburgh and that I lived closer to one!

    • L says:

I was going to say it seems more like the magazine that Wegman’s grocery stores put out here in the US (Wegman’s cooking or Wegman’s kitchen) or something like that.

They are similar stories basically just made to make people buy stuff from Wegmans.

      • Layale says:

Yes! This is what I was going to say. I actually don’t mind Wegman’s “Menu” magazine. Though, I also confess to never having read a single issue of Martha’s magazine to know how it would compare.

      • bluhare says:

Exactly. Doesn’t Whole Foods put out a magazine like that?

    • Eleonor says:

I love Waitrose. Their “meal deal” saved me a lot of time 🙂

    • backwards says:

Was just about to say the same thing. Waitrose is great, I live around the corner for one and a saviour if I don’t feel like cooking!

      • Devon says:

I’m so jealous! There are only 2 in Edinburgh, in Morningside and in Comely Bank, and they are too far for everyday shopping. Thankfully, I’ve got 2 Sainsburys within 5 minutes but I’d love a Waitrose.

I haven’t tried their meal deals but I get the Sainsbury ones. Such a good deal for good food when I don’t want to cook! I wish there had been those types of deals when I was living in Canada!

    • Jen says:

I work for Waitrose, they are a fantastic company to work for! Also their Kitchen Magazine is all about food…nothing more nothing less!

    • Glaughy says:

You live in Edinburgh? So jell. I used to live in London and didnt even like it.

And yeah I couldnt afford to shop at Waitrose. Tesco or Sainsbury’s (or Aldi) all the way 🙂

      • Devon says:

Yep! Been here since August and I really like it. Scotland is so beautiful but it’s been FREEZING here. It was snowing, again, yesterday. All of my friends back in Vancouver are living it up in 20C weather and I’m frozen solid!

  4. Rll says:

Waitrose isn’t low brow, it’s the poshest supermarket in the UK along with the Whole Foods invasion

    • FLORC says:

Without meaning to insult the UK or Waitrose is any way and having only seen it online, it doesn’t seem all that special. It’s simple style and I don’t see where the creativity aspect comes in.
As a well traveled American there’s nothing that stands out. Lots of stores and publications can hike prices way up and then it becomes “classier” as a result. JMO Please don’t crucify me Waitrose lovers!

      • LAK says:

Waitrose is definitely posh, with matching prices.

It’s not just the lay out, it’s the quality of the produce/products AND the types of customers it targets.

It also tries to have exclusive deals with high end producers and organic* farmers eg Prince Charles. The ‘dutchy originals’ range comes from highgrove and the duchy of cornwall.

It’s inhouse chef consultant is a michelin star chef, though slightly bonkers as to what constitutes palatable food flavourings.

Delia Smith, who Pippa has replaced, is the UK version of Julia Child. On the one hand, good for Pippa for her hustle. It’s paying dividends, but on the other, there goes good cooking advice from a person with more than 20yrs of experience, who kept it simple and easy.

*Organic is such an abused term, and nothing is truly organic so I always side eye. That said, waitrose’s organic is better than other supermarkets’ organic ranges.

      • FLORC says:

LAK i’m getting it a bit more now, thanks.

An in house Chef of that caliber is nice, but just like the Whole Foods here and various specialty organic only stores, it’s silly (imo). Organic is rarely used correctly, but warrants a higher price tag. And not everything needs to be organic… but i’ll stop before I rant.

As far as Pippa replacing someone with oodles of experience.. Pippa keeps things simple to. Pre school level simple. We’ll see how long she lasts, but until she gets the boot i’ll will enjoy her column as it is sure to be more fodder for pippatips!

      • Rll says:

Well I live in Gloucestershire, home to Prince Charles AND Princess Anne, and our Waitroses in Cirencester and Cheltenham are super, rah rah, hooray Henry posh

      • Dena says:

Is Pippa doing the writing? Or is it a ghost writer(s) whose really doing the writing?

Is there a known history of her cooking? Or is this some off-branch of the party business?

Other than the connection with her sister via PW, I don’t get the “experience” connect? How are they/she “selling” her as credible?

BTW, Pippa and Kate remind me of Jackie Onassis and her sister Lee Remick (sp). I don’t think Pippa will get/marry a title. The money/wealth angle may have to do for her.

How about her brother? What’s the speculation there? Thanks.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

Whole Paycheck… I mean, Whole Foods has hot the UK? Is it popular? I confess it is the only place I shop, aside from farmers markets. A fanatic for organic.

    • Sassy says:

Dena, its Lee Radziwill, not Remick – and she is still alive and well in America.

      • Dena says:

Thanks Sassy! I knew it was something or another with an ‘R’. I think the New York Times recently featured a story about her.

Was I thinking Lee Remick. Someone’s name is Remick (smile).

  5. Cazzee says:

I like her scarf in these photos!

Nice colors, nice texture, nice length…I would wear it.

  6. lflips says:

Whenever I see her I can’t believe she’s only 29. Does she use tanning beds a lot? Her skin looks rough.

    • Devon says:

I noticed since moving to the UK, LOTS of women in her age bracket, and younger, use tanning salons and get spray tans. I have never in my life seen so many tanning salons as I have in the last 8 months living in Scotland. That combined with smoking and the drinking, lots of women look a lot older then they are here.

      • Denise says:

Ditto, Devon! I’ve been here for nearly 8 years (I come from Canada too) and I cannot believe how old and haggard some women, and girls, can look. Some twice their age. Of course it’s only fair to mention there are also lots of lovely English roses.

      • Devon says:

        Yay for Canadian ex-pats!

I thought people were just being nice to me when they told me that I looked like I was in my early 20s when I just turned 30. Nope, women here look so much older than their age because of the lifestyle here. Smoking, drinking, loads of makeup, tanning and repeat. And you’re right, there are some gorgeous women here. Such natural and stunning beauty. Lots of women would look so much better without the tan, foundation and eyeliner.

    • Kasia says:

She looks like a well preserved 39. Orange tan and raccoon eyes make her look so cheap!

    • Me Three says:

She’s not loaded up with makeup so you can see how she really looks. Frankly, it makes me feel good about myself and I used these photos to show my little 12 year old who seems to think that all the celebs out there look as perfect as their air brushed and professionally done makeup…to show her, that this is what Pippa really looks like. Just a regular girl with skin problems like everybody else.

  7. Chicagogurl says:

She looks so much better without all the make-up/eye-liner in the sweater pics.

  8. Alexis says:

Damn, she looks HAGGARD. I can’t believe we’re the exact same age! She doesn’t really bother me, though. America has enough famewhores, so I don’t really pay attention to Pippa.

    • Christo says:

I totally agree. In that second photo, she has the same slack-jaw guffaw and pensive presence of a young Susan Boyle. She looked cute in her outfit at William and Kate’s wedding, but her appeal is lost on me. From what I have seen in interviews, their mother is like a UK version of Kris Jenner, pimping out her daughters.

  9. FLORC says:

I doubt this is happening, but I wish Pippa was intentionally behind #Pippatips. It would improve her image showing she can make fun of herself if she was and there’s a level of intelligence coming up with things so simple.

  10. Apples says:

My Whole Foods has magazines and little flyers like this.
I have to admit that after work, I am often so brain-dead that I open them up to get ideas of even what groceries to buy. Sort of like, oh yeah, Spinach, Feta, Tomato Omelets; I forgot about them. I practically need my hand held in the Grocery. Pippa’s culinary tips are 100% geared toward me and my friends! LOL.

  11. Mich says:

Somebody please correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the backlash against her Waitrose gig was that:

    a) most contributors are real foodie innovators including classically trained (i.e. Cordon Bleu) chefs and restaurant owners – a standard Pippa obviously doesn’t meet and

    b) she, a person with zero experience, is replacing the much loved and respected Delia Smith.

  12. Kaye says:

Pippa Tip: serve food at a dinner party.

  13. Erin says:

You guys have top stop using that header pic. I keep thinking Val Kilmer died.

  14. Chickie Baby says:

WHOA! Look out, Martha Stewart! There’s some wanna-be competition right on your heels!

Martha better get her act together and start coming up good entertaining ideas, because, you know, that Pippa brand is just taking over the world.

  15. lucy2 says:

Thank goodness she’s here for us. I was about to serve lasagna and creme brulee at my Asian themed party.

  16. mystified says:

Forgive me but I find Pippa Middleton really fascinating to look at. Her face is really interesting. From some angles she looks breathtakingly beautiful, from others she looks rather masculine, and at others she can look severe.

I also like her style sense minus the dark under-eyeliner and overtanned skin.

  17. Christina says:

    Here’s a good one:

”Bright flowers can serve to “soften angular Asian-style tableware”, while judicious deployment of paper lanterns, fairy lights or floating candles can “set the mood”.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2013/mar/28/pippa-middleton-tips-waitrose-magazine?INTCMP=SRCH

As for the claim that her ‘biological clock is ticking’ give me a break. She’s only 29, even if she does look a lot older. Why do so many people assume that EVERY woman can’t wait to get hitched and start reproducing?

    • FLORC says:

I loved the one about placing a pitcher of water at the table and if there’s no room use a side table. Classic!

      • Mich says:

#Pippatip: Decorating can help set a mood!

      • FLORC says:

When serving soup to your guests soup always serve it with a spoon and not a fork. Forks are for solid foods and often accompanied with a knife. #pippatips

  18. Annie says:

Why do the Middleton sisters look over 40? :/

Never underestimate a good skincare regime, ladies. Dermatology is not a myth!

    • Cazzie says:

Aren’t they all cigarette smokers? Mom and the kids?

Told to me by a physician once:

“If you smoke cigarettes, by the time you are 25 you’ll look 30, and by the time you’re 30, you’ll look 40.”

This family is proof positive of that statement.

  19. Jacqueline says:

She looks like she wants to eat my soul in the first pic.

Either she is exceedingly stupid or completely unaware of how she is received. I can’t imagine that the families allow this. I mean, use a ghost-writer for heaven’s sake! She plays a good game with the uptradey business for being so seemingly dense.

  20. Dee Cee says:

The store wants a royal seal of approval if you will.. for their store.. please use our fabulous pre-made party foods for catering various upper class parties..

    • Christina says:

Thing is though, Pippa is NOT royal. She’s not even upper class, for those who care about such matters. She’s just a middle-class girl whose parents made a lot of dosh from their business ventures (and possibly other things besides….) More to the point, she has NO cookery credentials whatsoever. My guess is Waitrose’s customers will not take kindly to being patronised in this way.

      • mystified says:

That could be part of the point: that people with no serious cooking skills and who aren’t “to the manor born” can purchase high end ready made food and feel as if they are.

      • Christina says:

Yeah, but Pippa doesn’t have the aura of high-class elitism about her at all. She just seems like a shameless free-loader. Look at the comments on the Daily Fail page. Loads of people are saying they’re going to boycott Waitrose as a result of this. Waitrose’s customers may tend to be well-off and upwardly mobile, but they’re not going to be impressed with a hanger-on pretending to be able to cook.

      • Mich says:

        @ Christina

I suspect that high LSM group of people who shop at Waitrose do so because they feel it is “the best”. As a brand concept, the magazine sounds like it tried to embody that image.

Telling a bunch of professional early to middle aged people that Pippa, a young woman still finding her niche in life, is now someone they should be trying to live up to is a pretty stupid marketing move in that context.

  21. sasha says:

I’m sorry, did she really tell us how to make ice??

I was assuming that was a pippatip. Good lord!

    • Flower says:

A cooking section in a very popular UK lifestyle magazine had a 6 page article on how to make ice, it was actually amazing, but their ice cubes were works of at with flowers and sweets inside and and ice bowl inset with holly and berries for punch. The science of ice-cube making was discussed and how adding various flavouring agents such as juices or salt could alter the consistence and melting time of the ice. It goes to show how even the most basic thing can be made fabulous and new if you have creativity, talent and know how, sadly Pippa seems lacking in all the above.

  22. sasha says:

“Regardless of how tired I might be, the moment Friday lunchtime arrives I get that contagious pre-weekend excitement.”

Because I work SO HARD all week.

    Yeah right pips.

  23. French Reader says:

I don’t know, I always thought she wanted to marry an aristocrat. But this guy is a self-made man (although that means he didn’t get everything handed out to him, so he may be more interesting than the blue-bloodied guys she’s dated before), his parents aren’t wealthy from what I understand.

  24. Joy says:

I can’t understand her appeal. If I had to describe her as a color it would be beige.

  25. Talie says:

I know people shade her a lot, but she would have no problem hooking a guy with a title…I mean, those families would all be more than happy to get in the Middleton business if it meant going to private events with William and Harry.

    • LAK says:

The royal family isn’t as posh as their status suggests, and some aristos look down on them.

Look at it this way, at the marriage of Charles and Diana, it was felt that Charles was marrying UP rather than the other way round.

The Middletons haven’t been embraced by aristos no matter that they caught William.

      • Thinker says:

Ha! And it’s true too, the Spencers are an ancient family, but quite obviously sniveling Charles married a goregeous young woman entirely out of his league and was eclipsed by her magnetism and innate noble disposition.

        Never again, hence the Middletons.

  26. Jade says:

She and whoever hired her are not kidding anyone. Was she ever known for her cooking or food skills/knowledge before Kate Middleton ? No. And I don’t get the attention over her ass. It looks normal. There are so many celebs/quasi celebs with better asses. I guess in this Internet age it’s easier to get your 15 mins. Pippa, just get your rich man and disappear.

  27. Therese says:

Greetings all! What is a Wisteria Sister? I must’ve missed that somehow. Thanks.

    • Flower says:

‘The Wisteria Sisters’ is what she and Kate were known as during their university days when they were stalking the ranks of the upper class lads.

Wisteria = pretty to look at and a prodigious and tenacious climber.

  28. Elly says:

wow the cover… she looks like a satanic party hostess.
