SuperBowls just ain’t what they used to be … who watches the game or even remembers who plays … its all about what controversy will well up from the deeply shallow recesses of theAmerican zeitgeist. Television used to be the means to convey the spectacle – now it’s the spectacle itself. Paging Dr. McLuhan to the front desk.
Chesty exploitation (that’s gotta be a Drag Queen somewhere) went equal opportunity this year … when burly, hairy chested mechanics tried to snatch the controversy crown from out of the cleavage of the famous Jackson ‘wardrobe malfunction.’ Sounds very Tom of Finland … but was in fact very Snickers.
Challenging the May-December, Ebony and Ivory thrills of Ms. Jackson and J-Tim — these two fearless mechanics meet mid-kiss on the chocolate highway. Homo-possible panic ensues and they search desperately for a way to re-assert their manhood. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation objected to just that search as E! Online reports:
“Mars needs to apologize for the deplorable actions of its Snickers brand,” [said] GLAAD president Neil Giuliano… Another GLAAD spokesperson said Tuesday that the commercial’s “kind of prejudice was inexcusable.”
It seems to me all those boys did was get shirtless and do a little impromptu chestwaxing … hit the gym and they are ready for a Circuit party come Summer. Is that Defamation … or the ultimate affirmation.
Mars/Snickers has bowed to the awesome pressure of the Velvet Glove annd pulled the ads from all circulation ever … except of course everywhere on line forever. Like here. HAAPY (but not GLAAD) Viewing.
Y’know I dont watch tv- dont have one.
That was indeed a completely shallow thing to see.
People are raving about this?? Why??
But yeah I do see how it demonstrates total phobia and denial for anything even suggestively homosexual..
Couldn’t you also perceive it as an example of the ridiculousness of homophobia and the ridiculous things men will do to prove their heterosexuality? Does everyone have to get their panties all in a wad about things like this? Isn’t there a war or something more important we could be worrying about????
that was awful. it doesn’t give me that ‘wanna buy a snickers right now’ urge. at all. & i’m not a homophobe. some things just shouldn’t be mixed. my candy cravings versus 2 hairy mechanics in a liaison is one of them. it may as well have been 2 plumbers showing crack. blech.
I guess Hershey will have to just run with the playground slang angle and make themselves the darling of the gay positive press … who get to run that campaign 🙂
What Aimee said.
I thought it was poking fun at homophobia more than anything else.
Whatever.
Oh my goodness! Are you kidding me?? That was hilarious. It was totally making fun of homophobes.
Chill people!
And yet GLAAD … desperate for work … goes after them … how can they work in media analysis and be so clueless
ew hershey highway! urban you are too clever for your own good.
Ewww is right … that shouldnt be done to something as lovely as chocoalte …
Frankly I didn’t care enough about this commercial to stop and analyze it until all the bruhaha started. God when did every body become so reactionary. Yeah the commercial may be poking fun of homophobia but even if its not – two heterosexual men who accidentally kiss might just react in just such a fashion. It’s not anti-gay so much as geez that was awkward, let’s pretend it never happened. Well that’s my two cents. Love celebitchy BTW.
Well, I thought it was kinda cute and all…and I bet those 2 “mechanics” did a bit more tongue action after the take…mechanics my foot – they’re 2 out of work hairdressers…so there.
Glaad needs to get an effing sense of humor. this was funny.
everybody is afraid to say or do anything because of these retarded kinds of lawsuits.
the homos i know think that was pretty funny…not a big deal.
What they are objecting to isn’t really the commercial, it was the website which offered several alternative endings. One of them was after the “kiss” the two mechanics started beating the hell out of each other with wrenches. They said that it implies it’s ok to beat the crap out of someone for an accidental thing thay may be seen as homosexual. I probably wouldn’t have seen it that way but now that they mention it I guess I can see their point. The website has been taken down, everyone apologized, it shouldn’t be news anymore.
