Here are some photos from last night’s launch of “Kate Young For Target” in NYC. Michelle Williams was the big “get” for the event and I’m assuming that she’s wearing Kate Young…? Probably. Many sites are calling this Michelle’s “new hairstyle debut” but her hair is only slightly different now than when we saw it last, in February. Basically, this is the same cut only she’s been growing it out for the most part. Back in February, Michelle said her hair was “midstage” between a pixie and whatever her ultimate hair goal is, and that it was “insufferable”. I’m struggling to understand where she’s really going, though. Is she aiming for a bob? Why is she cutting the one side so short? Why does she have the same hair as my skater-boy makeout partner circa 1993? Yes, I’ve had long hair most of my life so these short styles are so weird to me.
I’m also including photos of Maggie Gyllenhaal, who also changed up her hair recently. She cut it all off! Now Maggie has the pixie! Sort of. Is this a pixie? It seems so choppy and like her hair has too much fluffiness and body to really pull this off successfully, you know? Her hair isn’t “flat enough” to make this work.

Michelle is sporting the Miley.
I think it’s actually called the ‘Kate Lanphear’!!
Hah! Yeah I saw the pictures and thought to myself, “She’s just being Miley!” Then I sent out a silent thank-you to Miley for that cheesy song and for every celeb woman cutting her hair recently for the opportunity to use it.
nahh.. it’s kate gosselin
Ha! Yes!
Yes! And, I don’t get it. Why such a harsh masculine hairstyle? If you’re a masculine girl, ok, but I think Michelle seems about as feminine as you can get.
Hmmm…I don’t think it’s so much a masculine hairstyle (I don’t know any men at all with hair like that) as unflattering as all get out.
ugh! hate both those haircuts!
Both are terrible.
I might be on my own but i really like Maggie’s cut. it draws attention to her eyes, very pretty.
Nope, I like it too! Wish I could wear a short cut.
You’re not alone. I like Maggie G. She will always be one of my favourite actresses because of Secretary. I think she has a unique beauty. Her eyes and smile is so lovely.
I like Maggie and her style. Can’t wait to see her in Frank.
I like it too.
I love both of them! I don’t get the hate for short hair on this site. I think short hair is adorable if you have the patience and features for it (I don’t).
She has tractor-beam eyes no matter what her hair length is. I find that both of these hair-cuts are on the wrong person. Switch the two, and I think both ladies would look better.
Totally agree – Maggie’s hair cut is great. She looks confident and happy. Michelle’s cut is confusing – thought the back was up in a ponytail – she’s got friggin’ thin hair.
Noooo! What did you do Michelle??? Are you having a case of break-up sads?
I don’t like Maggie’s either. It looks like old lady hair. Too short on top and too square at the sides.
Maggie has a classic case of Q-tip head.
Maggie’s weird haircut structure DOES look like an old lady’s! The reason is, a lot of old ladies want hair cuts that cover their ears which don’t stop growing (info via my Granny). LOL.
michelle’s would look better if she didn’t have sooo much product in it and she kept it out of her face. but overall i like those asymetrical styles.
i think maggie looks great. i’m a fan of the pixie having a bit of body– too flat and you look weird IMO. and i think it does wonders for her cheek bones! but i’m biased– she’s one of my favs!
That’s like Kate Gosselin’s old doo? Totally WTF.
Love BOTH haircuts.
Best I’ve seen Michelle look in a very long time…her other cut was boring.
I believe this is the first time by just merely looking at a hairstyle has made me angry!!! Michelle’s, that is.
I agree that Michelle has that 1993 skaterboy vibe. But I like Maggie’s cut.
Um, what can I say about Michelle’s haircut? Well . . .her legs look great in that outfit.
I thought Michelle was finally growing out her hair? She looks better with long hair.
I really don’t like either but if I had to pick I think I would go with Maggie just because it looks easier to grow out.
She looks a bit like Tracy Anderson in the face in these photo’s. Hate the hair.
I came here to make an 80s joke about Michelle’s haircut, but then I saw Maggie’s hair and I just don’t know anymore. Why Maggie, why?
What would make her think that hair hanging in her face would be a good look? Both women look awful.
I love Maggie’s so much. The pixie cut is my favorite cut and also Maggie is my favorite actress and I sort of in love with her myself. I know she isn’t a conventional beauty but she is the look that I admire most and fantasize that I look like that. Now Michelle’s is ugly. Why did she say she was growing her hair out when she is only letting the top sprout out
Michelle looks cute. I will never like black on navy but good effort to change things up for her. Maggie looks like every art teacher I had in HS. I like her with a more shaggy ear-length cut.
I like both cuts, I like short hair but I am wearing a boring long style at the present…when you can’t decide leave it long, I’ve been so lazy.
I had Michelle’s hair cut when I was 14 in 1988. All the “alternative” girls did. It was awful then and now.
I think Michelle looks so much better with long hair, like in Blue Valentine. I know the short cuts suit her style, but the long always make her face so much prettier.
Haha, I did too! But I had it in 1992 and mine was shaved down shorter above the ears and back. That was a bitch to grow out.
I had a similar look in 1992. My boyfriend had the same haircut as me LOL. I thought we looked very cool and “alternative.”
Unless Michelle is making a movie set in the late 1980’s/early 1990’s there’s no reason to have this haircut. Even then it was a look that only the very young could pull off.
Michelle Williams stole my hair, but I stole it from Tilda Swinton first so I guess we’re even.
Well, if she didn’t like growing out the previous cut, this one is going to make her absolutely miserable.
Am I the only one who finds Kate Mara totally irritating?
Gyllenhaall’s needs more style – Michelle’s needs less style.
Looks like she got gum stuck in her hair and ha to cut it out
as someone who has grown out short hair many times, the rationale for michelle’s cut is that the top is what takes the longest to grow out, so she is growing out the top and keeping the back and sides short so that she doesn’t look like a potato head, once the top is longer, probably at least chin length, she’ll grown out the sides and the back and they’ll catch up quickly. considering it’s a transitional cut I think it’s cute and she’s just having some fun with it. maggie looks fine with her cut, not great, just fine, I think mid length hair is actually what suits her best.
I thought that, too. But, then I noticed it is very short above her temples. That’s going to take a long time- almost like she is starting from scratch, or changed her mind about growing it out.
Finally… a voice of reason among so many uninformed opinions!! TY
I have nothing against short hair but both of these styles are FUG.
Needs new compare selection .. this group illustration, are never, not, no representative of cute.
both haircuts are adorable. not many women can pull that off. you have to have a lovely face. they both look beautiful.
Maggie could look awesome with a pixie… but her cut needs to be edgier in some way. Michelle has already told us she’s in a transition so I want to focus on the clothes. SATIN DOES NO ONE ANY FAVORS. She actually looks thick around the middle in those shorts, too bad.
Michelle looks like her shorts are bunching around her inner thighs. I don’t wear shorts anymore because that always happened to me and I assumed it was due to the size of my thighs. I actually feel better to see it happens to thin people, too.
Love Maggie’s new style. But Michelle’s? What did she style it with, a Weed-Whacker?
Both are horrible, luckily enough hair grows !
Michelle should stick to the pixie look, fits her in every way! Now if she wants it longer, let it grow with a decent cut, not that asymmetrical mess.
