Duchess Kate films short video for Children’s Hospice Week: improving?

Duchess Kate has been working so much lately! Whenever I see a new story or photos from a new appearance, I always think “Wow, her maternity leave is going to last for a really long time.” It’s like she’s trying to get a bunch of stuff done really quickly because there’s going to be a long vacation coming up. Anyway, Kate’s handlers must be playing around with the issue of how to improve her public speaking, because they’re trying something new: a pretaped video on behalf of the “Together for Short Lives’ Children’s Hospice Week”. Judging from her black minidress with the Peter Pan collar, I think this thing might have been taped on or around March 20th – that’s when she wore the same dress to an appearance for the Child Bereavement Charity. Kate is the patron for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, which is part of a support system for UK kids with “life-limiting conditions” and the families that support them. Here’s the video:

Are we considering this another public speech? Sure. Well, when she gets to speak directly to the camera, at least she’s not looking down at her notes three times per sentence. I’m assuming there was a teleprompter involved. And there are some odd pauses too. I’m still assuming that Kate is being coached on how to speak and how to make a speech, and at this point… is the coaching helping her? Or is it making her more nervous and making her seem like a posh robot? I don’t know. I mean, I’ll be nice and say that this is an improvement only because I’m grateful that she’s not looking down constantly at her speech and her hair’s not in her face. So, yes, an improvement.

As for her body language, with her hands together on her lap… it was really her only choice because she’s wearing a minidress. We would have seen the duchess biscuit if she didn’t hold her hands there. Which is still my point about her short hemlines – how is she able to meet people, to bend down to talk to children, to sit and stand and walk around without constantly adjusting her skirt and making sure she’s not revealing too much? Wouldn’t it just be easier to simply wear longer skirts? I’m not saying she has to dress like an Amish woman, but knee-length skirts would just seem much simpler and professional.

Also, remember that story about Kate maybe going to live with her parents for a few months right after she gives birth? Well, there’s an interesting addendum to that story – The Telegraph (via The Mail) has sources claiming that Kate is going to live with her parents for a few months before she gives birth too, and that she wants to give birth at an out-of-the-way hospital too. A source says: “Their thinking is that she will be based at her parents’ house during the later stages of her pregnancy and they do not want her to have to travel miles to Paddington when she goes into labour.” Kate wants to give birth at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, which is where she & Pippa were born too. Once again, I don’t think it’s weird that Kate wants her mom around for all of this stuff, especially given that it’s Kate’s first pregnancy and baby. But I do not understand why it seems more and more like Kate and William are living completely separate lives.

PS… All of the photos of the royals playing with the wands are adorable.

I think there’s something off about Kate and Wiliam ‘s living arrangement. What if the marriage itself is also an arrangement. Today is their anniversary. Do you think they’ll spend it alone together or will Kate celebrate the day with her mother? Smh.

  2. Savina says:

I will say this until I am blue in the face: she knew what she signed up for when she walked down the aisle. She had 10 long, very long years, of getting to know the rules of the game. To try and break them (for by example: going topless and getting upset when pics are taken, spending so much time with her family on vacations, living with her parents after THE heir is born and the short hem lines -and everything in between) is what is irritating the public. Until the Firm stops babying her, who knows what else she may try to change.

    • ANGELIC 20 says:

I don’t think rf is controlling kate or William. They are being TOO safe with them and with time they are getting out of control. Can you imagine if HM forbids her to stay so long with her mother or to give birth in London where other royals can visit the baby? DM will go like queen forces kate to stay away from her mother or kate’s agony as she is forced to do all on her own(of course after the middleton clan leak this to media).

    • FLORC says:

      Savina
I don’t think Kate actually knew what she was in for. Without diving into multiple conspiracies of her social climbing mother… I think Kate just wanted William. Like she wanted to continue being sheltered and not work so William was her guy and whatever he wanted was it. It’s also why I think she never looks past Williams wants and opinions. This is also terrible because he isn’t around and he’s not willing to guide her..So it’s not a crazy stretch to think of Kate as someone with a main goal in life and a limited maturity level. If William is all she wanted and he never cared about hs Royal responsibilities how was she really suppose to care herself?

Bit long winded, but my point is in there. She does have to stop being babied though. I think she’s growing up slowly though so improvement is being made.

    • Seagulls says:

You had me right up until the topless bit. She wasn’t on a public beach, she was on a private estate and the photos were snapped from quite a distance. I think we can criticize her, but those photos crossed serious boundaries.

      • Savina says:

There is no such thing as privacy when you are a media magnet, as she knows she is. And she does know it, because she looks dead on at the cameras and smiles at them like she’s Kim K. She also has a history, pictures prove this as well, that she is not shy about showing her body. More importantly she is an HRH should be careful not share her goodies when out, no matter how PRIVATE you think the estate is said to be.

  3. India says:

No, she is not improving. She’s getting worse with the oh so obvious fake accent, little girl clothes with the too short skirts, hair flipping, unenthusiastic speeches,
stumbling over her words and not being prepared. The RF should keep her hidden away along with her pushy in your face family.

  4. Mich says:

The wand pics make me smile 🙂 (<–see). I want a wand!

She might not be the most engaging speaker but I’m thrilled she made the video. It is bringing a lot of attention and that is great! Why should Topshop be the biggest beneficiary of her royal life?

    • lisa says:

      ita

i would pay money to have heard her say avada kedavra when she was wielding it

    • LAK says:

My goodness Mich. Jolly good show at the weekend. Every time i thought i should wade in there you were 🙂

      What a Dame you are.

  5. anonincali says:

You know, I have to admit. I was one of those people that praised her smallest accomplishments, but I saw a documentary this weekend on Queen Noor and Rania, and it really opened my eyes to why Kate needs to be criticized more harshly. She doesn’t care about her new role. There is no Passion or desire to use her position to do amazing things.

    • aims says:

      Rania Is amazing.

      • Christina says:

Rania is widely disliked in the Arab world for her elitism and pandering to Westerners. Her family are also notoriously corrupt.

      • Leen says:

Christina – very true. Rania is not very liked in the Arab world, esp Jordan. Some of it stems from racism as Jordanians (who are not of Palestinian origin) dislike Palestinians, and Rania is Palestinian. Another is that her husband is notoriously corrupt (a known gambler, embezzler, if you criticize him, you disappear, he’s a nicer version of Syria’s Assad). A lot of Palestinians are not fond of her either because she ‘sold out’ to the Jordanian royal family who have their history of occupation/discrimination against the Palestinians.

There’s a saying that goes in Jordan, every other person is in the secret service to the Royal family. Rania is great PR for the Western world/US because they seem like a very ‘liberal’ family, but they are very, very corrupt.

After all, a lot of people were fascinated with Asma Assad (she is very similar to Rania) that is until the Syrian uprising happened.

Although on a more personal note, I’ve heard she is a very friendly woman, my aunt taught her children, and are generous people, so there’s that.

    • FLORC says:

It she doesn’t have to do much either. She just has to find a worthy cause that humbles her and bring attention to it.
Those women are incredible! They’re at the other end of the spectrum from Kate.

  6. Resa says:

I love how all of the pics in the video are from a visit she did last year. Had she seriously not been to visit this charity since then?

  7. Seagulls says:

Why can’t they just let Kate speak in her original accent?

    • GoodCapon says:

This is what I will never understand.

If they’re trying to make her sound as upper-class as possible then what is the point of branding her as the People’s Princess 2.0? Part of why she fails in public speaking is because she’s trying so hard not to slip on the new accent.

    • LAK says:

i don’t think anyone is making her speak like that. William and Harry don’t speak like that.

      • Christina says:

To quote the late great Jack Lemmon in ‘Some Like it Hot’ – ‘Nobody talks like that!!!’ That accent is not a ‘posh British accent’. It is a caricature of what a ‘posh British accent’ sounds like. Reminds me of Scarlet Johansen’s cringeworthy attempt in ‘The Other Boleyn Girl’. Doesn’t so much posh as constipated.

      • LAK says:

@Cristinna – i adore SOME LIKE IT HOT. It’s always funny no matter that i have seen it numerous times.

      • Christina says:

        @Lak

I know, it’s great, isn’t it? Even though it was made more than half a century ago, it still seems fresh. And Marilyn was so otherworldly gorgeous and funny – always getting the fuzzy end of the lollipop. That’s one of the many double entendres in that film btw. I think it’s hard for us to understand just how scandalous it must have been back int he 50s!

  8. Eleonor says:

They must change that coach, she looks constipated!

  9. JenD says:

I’ve never heard her speak before (and too lazy to dig around and find anything), so I can’t comment on her new accent, but the odd pauses sound like a combo of speech training and reading from a teleprompter.

I’m hoping her slow start to do royal things is because she’s been working on getting over anxiety or being “trained” to be a royal. I can’t help it, I just like her.

  10. Karen says:

With multiple takes and a teleprompter its still a cold speech. In the video you see her working with the charity on one occasion. It’s not her priority but she’ll ask others for money (it is a great cause but she’s so not invested).

Most new parents like their parents help at their house not at mommy and daddy’s. They are supposed to help with the transition from scared new parents to able to do it with their six nannies. The child is not born and its already a Middleton. No Windsor here. I wonder how long it will be for the Queen to see the great grandchild? Maybe in the hospital but I can’t imagine her visiting camp Middleton.

    • ANGELIC 20 says:

exactly ,windsors are completely excluded from this. I completely agree with you on her not being invested in her causes. It’s great that this video will bring more attention to this cause but how can she ask others to support her cause when she only visited the charity once herself in more then a year and let’s count how many 5 star luxurious vacations she has taken in the same time.

  11. SamiHami says:

I think the pics with the wands are adorable.

As someone with a paralyzing fear of public speaking, I cannot hate on her for not having better skills yet. She’s making an effort-more so now than previously, so I’ll cut her a little slack while she hones her public speaking skills. Heck, she may never get good at it. I know in her position I would probably vomit or pass out, so the fact that she is able to at least keep it together that much is admirable in my mind.

    • FLORC says:

      Samihami
I would do the same. Public speaking was a nightmare when I had to do it. However, Kate doesn’t have to do it. If she made more visits to her charities I truly doubt she’d have to do the big speech at the same appearance. She doesn’t though so each visit has to be a big thing.

Also, you should look at past videos of her speaking. There really aren’t many either. She’s painfully struggling on her accent that many cringe watching it. If she didn’t try to maintain her false accent her speeches might come across as less cold and more endearing. She also might not pause as much or fumble her words.

  12. candice says:

Calling what she does “working” is an insult to those who really do work for a living!!! Oh, and a 31 year old who is so dependent on her parents is quite pathetic.

  13. HoustonGrl says:

Kate is a child. End of story.

  14. GoodCapon says:

I’m not gonna lie. Even with the pauses and fake accent this is soooooo much better from her usual speech.

She still sounds uncaring and monotonous however. No amount of speech training is going to change the fact that she doesn’t give a flying cahoot about her charities. When you really care about something, it will show.

  15. ANGELIC 20 says:

Can we stop pretending that William and Kate are still living together? Even though i don’t like either one of them as public figures (i dislike william more then kate} i was hoping they will be a good family together for the sake of baby c but now i don’t really have much hope. ever since collage they have been living apart in most of their relationship with only week long vacations or weekends together. She was supposed to live with him after the wedding but of course she loves london and here she is most of the time. She hasn’t been back to Wales since easter and was only there around that time . I think they work as a couple BECAUSE they spend most of their time apart NOT DESPITE OF. The dynamic of this relationship will change dramatically once the baby is born and he leaves RAF and start doing full time royal duties while living together in KP permanently.

I think William is calling all the shots with her staying at her mother’s place. She is obviously close to her and spends most of her time with her when not in london so it’s not a problem with her but i am afraid he is getting rid of her and baby while he gets to do whatever he wants to. He is running away from his responsibility towards his wife and child and making carole in charge of them while he can visit them whenever he wants but don’t have to deal with them 24/7 imo. This will also keep the baby away from rf who he disrespects on a regular basis. I hope this is not true but this is my gut feeling as he is spoiled and self centered i don’t think he wants to be there all the time to take care of them.

    • Tulip Garden says:

IMO, Kate and William have real strength as a couple. They spent almost 10 years together (somewhere in that time frame) before their marriage. I’m sure they worked out what would and would not be acceptable for them in that time frame. Now, other people may not care for the dynamics of their relationship (even though what those dynamics are largely speculation) but, I believe, it works for them.
I don’t get the feeling that they are not together. I believe the English media would be all over any stories of marital riffs b/c it would sale papers/garner clicks like crazy.

  16. GoodCapon says:

Forget the speech – what in the Waity is wrong with her left eyebrow!!

  17. The Original Mia says:

No, she’s not improving. She can’t read off a teleprompter, which is fine, but why can’t she memorize a 30 sec PSA? That’s the ridiculous part. There’s no warmth, emotion, or investment apparent in this video or towards this charity. Add to that the mini-skirt that’s about to reveal the royal birth canal & I’m done.

2nd anniversary & as usual they are separated. I don’t care what the press tries to float that is weird. And now you tell me she’s moving in with her family for the last 2 months of her pregnancy? WTH is going on with these two? I actually could understand this if William was stationed overseas, but he’s on the same continent, 2 hours away. Weird.

    • Zombie Shortcake says:

It is strange that she is not staying in a royal residence. How many operational ones are there to choose from? More than enough. It will be even more weird if she and the baby do not live in one after the birth. I think this is probably a first in British Royal history.

  18. Sachi says:

Did she apply her blush with a paint brush?

Her monotone voice needs a lot of work and her accent is just ridiculous now.

I know hospice care is not a happy issue, but she overdid the “serious” demeanour. She looks and sounds morose, and her whole vibe is funereal. Her message itself was supposed to be positive, but the overall impact was lost in her emotionless voice.

Still, it’s good to see her doing something more for her charity.

  19. LAK says:

I am just happy to see her working.

She’ll never improve if she doesn’t work especially since her public role requires her to make speeches and interact with the public. The parts that are stiff and monotone or uncomfortable will get better with time even if it’s a question of faking it.

Also, if she’s out and about more, it’ll cease to be a big media hoopla as everyone becomes used to seeing alot of her rather than this once in a while appearance that creates huge expectations per appearance with attendant media circus.

  20. Barbara says:

Good grief people…so very judgmental. What ever do people expect from her. I can believe it is not easy to make a recorded message knowing it would be picked apart no matter how well you did.

    • Kristin says:

      THANK YOU

She could sneeze and some people on this site would complain about its pitch for god sakes

      • Sachi says:

This site is Celebitchy. The fact that you are on here “bitching” about something means this website allows you to express your own opinions. Other people are doing the same thing: expressing an opinion.

Almost everyone gets bashed and trashed. If you get offended about people criticizing Kate, shouldn’t you get offended about the site’s entire premise and purpose?

Celebs and other public figures get constantly ragged on by posters here. Kate is not special in that regard and there are others who have been called names that are 10x worse than anything that has ever been said about Kate on here.

I find it more baffling that people complain about the comments when this website has never set out to be pro-Kate and doesn’t encourage only glowing praises.

We’re lucky Celebitchy allows for differing opinions. A lot of websites only allow positive comments and erase the negative ones, leaving no room for discussion, or vice-versa. All you see are “She’s so awesome!” “I love her!” and “She’s so beautiful!” posts.

What a boring place CB would be if it subscribed to that trend.

      • Christina says:

        @Sachi

        +100

Seriously, what EXACTLY do people expect when they choose to comment on a site called ‘Celebitchy’? That every comment should be cleared by Waity’s (or whoever’s) press office? If you want fawning coverage of celebs, there are plenty of places where it’s available: People magazine, the DM, Hello magazine etc etc. This site is a little bit different, and so much the better for it.

  21. DGO says:

    About the video:

a.) Her clown make-up is atrocious, but

b.) Not as atrocious as her fake posh accent.

  22. Kristin says:

If Celebitchy complains one more time about her hemlines, I’m gonna puke. This is Celebitchy, not Celegranny.

    • Mrsjennyk says:

      Yup 🙂
Still curious about the dress code she’s to adhere to. Anyone have a link to the protocol?

      • bluhare says:

I tried to post it but my computer is having issues. Perhaps someone else can help you. Or you could google it. The dress code for people meeting the royals is the same dress code as the royals themselves.

    • Eleonor says:

      Ahahah 😀

    • bluhare says:

Kristin, you say that on every thread. Would you like me to make you a macro so you don’t have to actually type it out every time?

      • Suze says:

Thank you for pointing that out Bluhare. I thought my aging jealouse prigg brain had a stroke or something because I *thought* I just read this comment on a Kate thread.

        And it appears I did.

    • My2Pence says:

@Bluhare not sure if these are some of the ones you were seeking.

For each event to which you are invited, you are sent the dress code for that event along with your invitation. So HM tells you what she wants you to wear – even if you don’t work for her. If you respect her, you follow her rules as a sign of respect. HM sets the dress code for Royal Ascot too, and these are just people coming to watch a horse race with her.

The clothing Police at Ascot are hysterical.

      • bluhare says:

Thank you My2Pence. JennyK, there you go. The dress code for the royals is the same as for the guests. (Ascot is something unto itself.)

    • Belle says:

The Celegranny comment isn’t funny, no matter how many times you post it. You are entitled to your opinion, but why try to insult others just for the sake of insulting? People have stated repeatedly, the reason so many find Kate’s hemlines too short. It has NOTHING to do with age… and whether Kate is ‘young enough’ to wear short dresses… just like it has nothing to do with how great her legs are. It is about professionalism and respect. If you cannot grasp these concepts, or choose to ignore them, fine… but mocking others because they do understand these things seems a little childish.

    • My2Pence says:

@ Kristin. They put their time, energy, and money into running a site a big as Celebitchy; they get to have whatever opinions they want. So do the rest of us, luckily, and Celebitchy allows differing opinions rather than shutting them down and toeing the royal PR line. But again, it is Their site so they get to write whatever articles with whatever opinions they want.

  23. Noodles says:

I’d like to throw this in (before going back to read all the comments)– the past few public outings have definitely proved that she has laid off the Botox. Recent pictures have shown {Gasp!} forehead wrinkles.

  24. Nymeria says:

Why the eff is her wedding portrait sitting there on the table? In case we’ve already forgotten who she is?

And holy freaking surf boards. Her eyebrow. What happened to it? Should we hold a prayer vigil for it to return to normal?

  25. Abby says:

Watched the video with an open mind (i’m a fan of the couple), but
    1. totally distracted by her left eyebrow
    2. SO MUCH BLUSH
    3. she seem so wooden speaking!

  26. FLORC says:

Is anyone else noticing she seems bigger and smaller pic by pic? Even on some tumblr pages she seems either much thinner or much fuller. She seems to be carrying more in these pics and her sheath dress with the flowers a week ago she still had such a small bump. Depending on the publication and how they edit the photos she goes up and down a full trimester!

  27. Miss Grey says:

long time lurker, first time poster.
Question why doesn’t William wear a wedding ring? is that a normal royal family thing no rings?

    • Tulip Garden says:

Yes, that is a royal family thing. Prince Charles doesn’t wear a wedding ring either. I’m not sure about Prince Phillip but I would be surprised if he did.

    • My2Pence says:

I don’t know about Prince Philip, but Prince Charles wears his wedding ring on his pinky finger with his signet ring.

    • LAK says:

Philip and Charles both wear rings, but they were them in the old fashioned Aristo way ie on their pinky finger behind the signet ring.

If you zoom into his hand in this picture of Prince Charles, you can see clearly 2nd ring behind his signet ring. That’s his wedding ring. He wore/wears it the same way for both his marriages.

      http://25.media.tumblr.com/2807294ed4f5b4bf99555b16e4a8d219/tumblr_mimq5tJAKH1qfqt76o1_500.jpg

here is Prince Philip’s ring behind his signet.

      http://regalmajesty.tumblr.com/image/36689760735

William chose not to wear a ring and none was made or given to him to wear. No reason has ever been given why he decided to go that way.

    • Carrie says:

It was announced before the wedding that William would not wear a wedding ring. If I remember correctly, his intention was to wear a signet like his father. (Perhaps once he becomes a “full time royal”?)

    • My2Pence says:

This BBC post (from the time of the Wessex wedding) explains it a bit:

      news(.)bbc(.)co(.)uk/2/hi/special_report/1999/06/99/royal_wedding/373496(.)stm

The royal men wear wedding bands in addition to their signet rings, or as least it appears Philip, Charles, and Edward but it appears William has chosen not to wear a wedding band. The signet ring is separate from a wedding band, and I think most of them wore the signet rings long before their weddings.

      • LAK says:

To add to what my2pence said. The signet ring developed as a way to sign documents when they used the coat of arms imprint on them in a wax seal. In a way they could be looked at as a form of identification because no one wore a signet ring with someone else’s coat of arms unless they were aligned with them in some way.

William not wearing a signet ring doesn’t mean anything. Perhaps he doesn’t like wearing rings in general.

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

My guess (and that’s all it is) is William doesn’t want to make his own ring a big issue. There’s always a chance he would simply forget to put it on, then people would scrutinize it and speculate. So by not EVER wearing a ring, it won’t ever be an issue.

Kate’s ring is different. I think she’s required to wear it in public, to remind everyone of Diana. I can’t imagine why else it was given to her. Certainly not sentimentality – the ring wasn’t passed down for generations from mother to daughters or daughters in-laws or anything like that — supposedly, Diana simply picked it out of a line-up of rings. And all it symbolizes is a failed marriage where the man married a naive girl he never loved to be a brood mare, resulting in her immense unhappiness until her early and untimely death. I would hate to look down at the cursed ring every day. But I think Kate’s required to wear it, for good public relations by invoking Diana’s memory.

  28. Mrs.Krabapple says:

I don’t think she’s capable of doing a fake accent and reading at the same time. Her mind can only handle one of those at a time. Somebody should tell her to drop the fake accent because it’s affecting her ability to say (or even read) a coherent sentence at the same time, which makes her sound like an idiot. Seriously, trying to fake the accent makes her sound mentally challenged.

And could she be wearing any more make-up in that video? Because if she could, that would be some feat. Even female impersonators don’t wear that much make-up.

  29. KellyinSeattle says:

It doesn’t bother me at all that she doesn’t “work”…

  30. Mia says:

I love her dress and I want it now! But her public speaking skills leave something to be desired. I don’t know something feels off about the way she’s speaking in this video.

  31. Suze says:

Children’s Hospices is a good cause. I hope Kate sticks with it – I’ll give her credit if she does. It’s not glamorous but it’s really worthwhile.
