Martha Stewart says ’70 is the new 50,’ she’ll try Match.com to find Mr. Right

Martha Stewart

No matter what you think of Martha Stewart, it’s difficult to deny that she looks absolutely amazing at 71 years old, and this cover of New You magazine shows Martha looking rather beautiful. I know that most people don’t really like Martha, and she’s supposedly a terrible person to work for and carries the ice-queen reputation to the limit, but she dominates the aspirational lifestyle business like no other. Forget Goop and Jessica Alba — Martha Stewart has been suggesting ridiculous methods to the peasants for decades, and the tips work if you’re willing to carve out silly little swans from chocolate or whatever. I never have the patience for that sort of stuff, so I’m not exactly in the average lifestyle guru’s demo.

Regardless of Martha’s tips not being my thing, I still respect her in a strange way. Like, when she was convicted of insider trading in 2004, she didn’t pull a Lohan and ask for probation and then whine and drag her heels in with repeat offenses over several years. Nope. Martha went in and did her time (albeit in a minimum security facility) and afterwards, she picked up the pieces of her business. Now Martha is back and more successful than ever, and she’s promoting her latest book, Living the Good Long Life: A Practical Guide to Caring for Yourself and Others, which broaches the topic of aging in today’s society. Here are some excerpts from her New You interview:

Martha Stewart

On aging: “Seventy is nothing like the 70 of 20 or 40 years ago. 70 is the new 50! Not everyone wants to retire, and very few people want to slow down.”

Stages of life: “It’s imperative to have a good diet that keeps you healthy. Maintaining a tiny waist is a very important factor in successful aging. In your forties, you should start thinking about the rest of your life. By your fifties, you should have a good doctor and wellness routine set up.”

Her top beauty secret: “Unlimited amounts of very good moisturizer, with sunblock.”

On setbacks: “I’ve had my share of curveballs. Rebuilding is a lot harder than building. I’ve learned that. You have to approach something new as a build-on to what you’ve already done.”

On second chances: “There is only one time around the track. And you are on that track the minute you’re born.”

Her one regret: “Just that I haven’t had more children. But my daughter has two babies now, so the family is growing.”

[From New You Magazine]

Yesterday, Martha also sat down with Matt Lauer on “Today,” and Lauer decided to ask about her love life. In response, Martha answered, “I haven’t found the next Mr Right. I’d like to have breakfast with somebody. I’d like to go to bed with somebody. Sleep with somebody. I’m always looking. Are you kidding? All women are always looking.” At Matt’s suggestion, Martha then agreed to join Match.com but says she’ll use an alias on the well-known dating site. Seriously? She’s going to get some crazies (and I would know — I went on a date with a guy from Match and soon learned that he was also seeking a Russian bride) on on that site, and once one person figures out Martha’s alias, he will definitely spread the word. Poor Martha hasn’t ever had much luck in the romance department, and I seem to recall that her first book, Entertaining, was released on the same date that her first husband filed for divorce. That’s gotta leave some scars.

  2. Jess says:

She’s 71!?! Wow, she looks good.

  3. lady mary. says:

She looks too good for 70 ,u go girl!

  4. Just Me says:

71?! No kidding!? She really does look amazing!

  5. gogoGorilla says:

PHOTOSHOP on the pics and some serious work in real life. It’s good work, but still work.

    • BW says:

Agreed. I wish she’d run an article about what she REALLY does, as moisturizer and sunscreen can only do so much.

    • Suzanne says:

Def photo shopped. Look at the REAL snapshots compared to the cover. Way younger looking on the cover shots. She is amazing but Match.com? Seriously? Why doesn’t she PAY for a “professional dating service” that would match her with men of her status? Can’t afford it Marty? Pa-leeze!

  6. Faye says:

I kind of like Martha, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. She’s a smart, successful businesswoman, and I admire her business acumen, even if I’ll never take the time to carve out swans from chocolate. She may have a reputation as an “ice queen” and a “bitch,” but that could just be because she’s a strong career woman. It’s not like she goes around bashing employees on their heads with her cell phone, a la Naomi Campbell.

And don’t get me started on her jail stint — that trial was the most ridiculous waste of taxpayer dollars I’ve ever heard of. She just tried to save herself some money; it’s not like she even owned enough stock that it made a difference to other shareholders when she sold. She should have been charged a hefty fine, and that’s it. Jim Toth and Reese Witherspoon could have killed someone and they won’t spend a day in jail, but Martha did time? Please.

Good luck to her finding a special someone. Don’t know about match.com, though; she needs a nice, rich, patrician hedge fund owner/widower or something.

Say it loud Sister! I actually love Martha more after she went to jail on those ridiculous charges and handled it so graciously, even talking about how she beautified her jail!

She has been scrutinized because she was the first successful woman and people want her to be June Cleaver! Give me a break. Woman come in all shapes and sizes and personalities.

I love that she shows that older women can do more than be Grandmas (she’s a grandma and working hard)

    • daisieb says:

Martha is phenomenal! I don’t know why she would want a man around to second guess everything does, a boy-toy maybe. I know a former assistant DA from the district where she was prosecuted and he said crimes such as hers NEVER go to trial, let alone end up with incarceration. At that time Ken Lay and Enron were grabbing headlines and the Bush White House wanted a very high profile figure to overshadow that nightmare. Ken left his desk at the WH and went off to his home in Aspen where it is reported that he died of a heart attack.

Martha’s cookbooks are focused on everyday cooking using simple ingredients. Best meatloaf ever, awesome mac and cheese, oatmeal cookies with dried cherries.

      She has exquisite taste.

      • anon33 says:

THANK YOU for this, I have been telling people this for years!! Martha was a patsy!! And she took it like a woman!

I unapologetically love Martha, and have since I was 15 years old, when I first started cooking, and doing family Christmas dinners. I have been subscribed to her magazines for almost twenty consecutive years.

I would not agree that she is like GOOP or any of these other idiots A) BECAUSE THIS IS HER LIFE’S WORK, not some BS she “fell into” after her acting career dried up, and 2) because she doesn’t suggest that you only buy expensive products. Her mags are careful to suggest products in a range of prices-for example, I discovered Mario Badescu through her, whose products are priced well below comparable products from companies like Philosophy or Clarins. I have actually saved money on skincare due to that!

      • bluecalling says:

yup, she was totally used. who does not have those conversations at those parties? what, we think the all really LIKE each other? that was sexist and awful… but then lauren hill may be going to jail for not paying taxes when she was clearly out of it and the whole world new that. so yeah…

      • Michelle says:

Actually a reply to Anon33- but I love Mario Badescu too! I was happy to hear that Martha is a fan, although I stumbled across them via a different source.

  7. Belle Epoch says:

UNRECOGNIZABLE on cover. What a joke.

Too bad women at 70 have to pretend they look 30. That’s not really progress, is it?

  8. Seagulls says:

I heart Martha, always and forever. She is an amazing business person, and she has done as much to change the visual vocabulary as anyone in modern history.

  9. V4Real says:

No Martha 70 is not the new 50 it’s the same old 70.

    Still love you.

  10. Barrett says:

She always wear big tops. I don’t get the you should keep a tiny waist as you age comment? If her’s is so tiny why wouldn’t she wear clothes that show it?

    • BW says:

Is that tan thing a snuggie?

      • NYC_girl says:

I think it’s a cashmere top from J.Crew. Only reason I know that is from watching the MSNBC (?) doc they did on the company and its CEO. They featured it. I think it’s a few hundred dollars. I went to a taping of her show last year before it got cancelled and was surprised at how tall she is. No chemistry with the audience though – wouldn’t interact at all with us esp during commercial breaks. zzzzz

    • Coconut says:

Her middle is prob not as thin as she’d like this the big tops. She’s prob referring to studies that say stomach fat is especially bad dor you and your heart as you age.

  11. Agnes says:

she looks amazing, but the photoshop machine broke on this one, didn’t it?

  12. MsAubra says:

    Get it Marty!!!

  13. annabelle says:

That’s a lot of soft lighting on the magazine pics, but she still looks pretty great on the red carpet and those flashes are harsh.

Like everything else in her world, I assume her skincare regimen is pricey and intensely detailed.

  14. Nanea says:

Whatever Martha does, she looks a lot less fake and processed as many people 30 and 40 years her junior.

There’s taking care of yourself with good skincare and probably minimally invasive procedures and then there’s actual surgery which usually does nothing but to age people and get them started on a cycle of repeated procedures like Megan F. or Rose McG etc.

  15. RHONYC says:

    she looks F*CK-ING A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! 😯

    her decolletage is buttery smooth.

hells bells Martha, i guess 70 really ‘is’ the new 50!

    you betta weeeerk. 😉

  16. Tig says:

Every time I see 50, 60 or 70 is the new whatever- I wish the person would have the candor to say- so long as your health holds up. Yes, diet and exercise should never be neglected, but alot of of things are out of one’s control. Sad to say, sometimes 70 IS 70, and it’s not always great!

    • Christin says:

My thoughts exactly. Some things are truly outside one’s control that can diminish abilities in later years. I am close to people that lived healthy lifestyles who ended up looking good but have very limited physical abilities due to neuro or autoimmune issues. Seventy is indeed 70 for them.

  17. Hakura says:

I wish there was a pic of her w/o the photoshop, so we can see what she really looks like, w/o any ‘touch-ups’.

  18. Viv says:

Good God, I want her leather pants!
She looks good, but I would totally make fun of my 70 year old mom if she wore those leather pants.
Martha, give me your pants. You can keep the snuggie.

  19. Ok says:

I am a Martha fan — but I call BS on the comment about regretting wanting more kids.

Martha barely knew what to do with Alexis while she was growing up. Martha did interviews years ago, when Alexis was only about 10 saying how she wishes she could have had more children but her hubby Andy was sterile and they could not conceive.

After their divorce Andy let it be known that the reason he and Martha did not want more kids was that Martga absolutely did not want more.

Then Andy proceeded to have several more kids with his second wife. The kids should be in their early 30’s now.

I love Martha but enough with the regret about having more kids. She just says it to make herself appear more homey

  20. holly hobby says:

That book was actually Weddings. She even dedicated it to her hubby. I know because when I was getting married, I went into the bookstore and flipped through it.

Her thoughts about having more children is so phony. I read in that Just Desserts bio that she didn’t want any more other than dried up old Alexis. Her husband wanted more kids but she didn’t. She elected to have a hysterectomy.

She also didn’t really mother Alexis. The husband took care of her and it must pain him that during the divorce, Alexis opted to side with Mommy (she does not talk to the father). However I can’t blame Alexis because how else will she make a living.

I do feel sorry for the kids, Truman and Jude (such horrible names for boys and girls. I’m sure they will be teased in school).

  21. taxi says:

Is Match.com paying her a lot of money? That’s the only reason I can think of why someone with her visibility & socio-economic bracket would join & play.

  22. Jenna says:

That’s um… that’s some serious photoshopping there. I mean, the candid shots show that, for 71 shes keeping it together more or less. (It’s hard for me to judge, I suck at guessing ages because in my family women look about 25 at 12 and more or less… stay there until about 50. My mom is 65 and passes for 35 easily. And my gran looked about 50 when she died at 87 so I have hope for my old age) But while she looks fine in those candid shots, the massive amount of age-washing they did on that cover is still blink worthy.

Which is honestly pretty sad. She IS pulled together and looks good. But to celebrate the fact she does while making it clear that under no circumstances is it good enough for a magazine cover seems like one hell of a slap in the face. I think I’d be seriously pissed personally – but I’m weird so who knows.

  23. Alexis says:

I don’t get why they’ve shopped her so much. MS looks great for her age — she’s always . She’d look much more beautiful and impressive if they eased up on the photoshop.

  24. Mandy says:

Wow, I had no idea that she was 71. She looks awesome!

  25. mk says:

The guys her age are too busy picking up on gold diggers. What a shame cause she has a lot to offer someone.
