Amy Winehouse takes responsibility for Norweigian drug conviction

The 12-step recovery program for addicts emphasizes taking responsibility for your actions. Amy Winehouse dropped her appeal against cannabis charges she is facing in Norway, which could be a sign that she is taking her recovery seriously.

The singer and her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, were arrested in Bergen in October 2007 on charges of possessing seven grams of cannabis.

They were held overnight and released after paying a 3,000 kroner (£290) fine. But Ms Winehouse later claimed police had made mistakes in the case.

The pair will now not have to appear in court, police said.

They were initially due to face a trial in March 2008, but it was postponed at the request of Ms Winehouse’s lawyer.

Last month, she was summoned to appear at an appeals court in Bergen on 12 January.

“After a careful review of the whole matter, they decided to drop the appeal,” lawyer Ole Kvelstad said. He did not give a reason why the appeal was dropped.

It’s unclear if Amy is really taking responsibility for her actions, or if she has sobered up enough to realize that, given how public her drug problem is, there’s no way that Norwegian authorities are going to let her off.

Unfortunately Amy’s drug conviction is going to prevent her entering some foreign countries. The conviction, as well as her health, prevented her from performing at the 2008 Grammy’s ceremony, instead performing songs from London via satellite.

Blake Incarcerated might be another reason Amy is giving up the appeal – if she pays to defend herself, she will also be defending him, as they were caught with the drugs together. Maybe she’s trying to withhold any sort of assistance, financial or otherwise, from that mooching junkie.

Note by Celebitchy: Amy Winehouse has been photographed enjoying her Caribbean vacation with a hot rugby player. Her rep says that “She has been enjoying herself on her break and meeting lots of new people.”

Yes, she does look a lot healthier and happier. Good for her! The hardest part of dealing with an addiction is having to put up with all the people lining up to watch you fail. I’ve been clean for 6 years now and people still bring that crap up and judge me for it. What matters is that she is trying, it is a long, long, road to recovery, so give the girl a break.

  6. Baholicious says:

Good, let’s hope this is the beginning of Amy Winehouse taking responsibility for Amy Winehouse. She should be in a one-piece though, yet it’s obvious she doesn’t give a shite and is comfortable in her body. Props for that anyway.

  7. Even though I hate to see anyone persecuted for pot, I’m very happy to hear Amy is owning up to this one. Baby steps.

California Angel – I’m so sad to hear people are still giving you shit 6 years after you’ve kicked your habit. You ought to be commended for your sobriety, not torn down by it. What sad people to sit in judgement.
