Zoe Saldana doubles-down on her claim she’s ‘androgynous’: ‘It is my life’

So many of you were corrected me or correcting each other on Tuesday’s Zoe Saldana post that I think some of you missed one of Zoe’s more ridiculous quotes. The one about Nina Simone got all the attention – Zoe said “Let me tell you, if Elizabeth Taylor can be Cleopatra, I can be Nina” – which caused a lot of debate about what Cleopatra really was ethnically. I referred to Cleopatra as an “Egyptian queen” which apparently caused some kind of flame-war. My bad…?

Anyway, Zoe also had something ridiculous to say about how she’s “androgynous” and the way she used the word made me think that she doesn’t really know what “androgynous” means. Zoe said, “I might end up with a woman raising my children. That’s how androgynous I am.” The definition of androgynous: “having the characteristics or nature of both male and female” or “neither specifically feminine nor masculine.” I get where Zoe was going, and I think I understand what she meant, but it might have been more straight-forward to say “I’m bisexual, sometimes I think I should get a girlfriend and make her my baby-mama.” So when Zoe was asked about her comments at the LA premiere of Star Trek, she seemed to double-down:

Zoe Saldana’s new interview with Allure magazine has attracted a lot of attention — in more ways than one. In addition to posing nude for the June issue, the 34-year-old Star Trek Into Darkness actress allowed the magazine to print her weight on the front cover and opened up about her sexuality in a revealing profile within.

Under Saldana’s name on the gorgeous cover, Allure wrote, “115 pounds of grit and heartache.” Inside the issue, Saldana showed off her slim figure in a sexy photo shoot that included a fully nude shot.

Saldana, who split from Bradley Cooper earlier this year, also said she may consider dating a woman in the future. “[I might] end up with a woman raising my children,” she explained of her sexuality. “That’s how androgynous I am.”

When asked if she’s ever been in a relationship with a woman before, Saldana said, “Promise me one thing: You’re going to ask this question [in the article]—- if you choose to, just put three dots as my response. That’s it.”

At the Hollywood premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness on Tuesday, May 14, Saldana further explained her quotes to reporters. “It wasn’t a generalization. It was a statement that I strongly stand by,” she said of calling herself “androgynous.”

“I said it and they literally put it word for word. I guess what I was trying to let the world understand is that it’s everybody’s decision to do whatever they want to do and who they love is their own personal decision.”

“As of today, I’ve been attracted to the male species but if one day I wake up and I want to be with a woman, I will do that because it is my life and therefore it is my decision.”

[From Us Weekly & ET]

I still don’t see what androgyny has to do with Zoe being with a woman. Androgyny is not sexuality. You can be an androgynous man or woman and be heterosexual, and you can be an androgynous man or woman and be homosexual. Androgynous isn’t a code word for gay or bi. If taken at face value, is she saying that she can be butch and she’ll want to be with a femme lesbian? Or is she completely misconstruing androgyny with bisexuality? She’s either pushing an outdated gender normative discussion or she’s just kind of dumb.

Oh, and Page Six says this morning that Zoe has been quietly seeing a man.

Despite musing that she may one day raise her kids with a woman, “Star Trek Into Darkness” star Zoe Saldana is getting close to handsome Italian artist Marco Perego, Page Six can exclusively reveal. Sources at a private party for the movie in LA Tuesday night said Saldana stuck close to long-haired Perego. One said, “They looked very close and were later seen kissing.” But another source told us, “Zoe and Marco have known each other for a while as friends. It’s too early to say they are dating.” Marco, also known as the Pirate Perego because of his long hair and resemblance to Johnny Depp, is a former professional footballer turned artist after suffering a leg injury. He moved to Spanish Harlem and worked as a busboy and waiter before his first show where he sold work to Giorgio Armani. He famously produced a 2008 sculpture of a bloody, dead Amy Winehouse titled “The Only Good Rock Star Is a Dead Rock Star.” Stunning Saldana ended her 12-year relationship with entrepreneur Keith Britton in 2011, then had a brief romance with Bradley Cooper. Her rep said last night, “We don’t comment on our clients’ personal lives.”

Hm. Perego sounds… rich. Interesting.

It’s SO dumb and her clarification makes it even worse. One day she *might* date a woman. One day I *might* eat a whole cabbage, but it doesn’t make me a vegetarian.

ETA: I know it’s a stupid analogy, but it’s on par with her comments.

    • minime says:

ahah I think that your analogy is still smarter than hers. Specially considering that she doesn’t know the real meaning of the words she’s using. After all the commenting, couldn’t she just pick a dictionary?!

    • j.eyre says:

But the point is, Fanty, you may wake up and want to eat a lamb chop one morning even though you are still full from eating the cabbage just the night before. And what kind of dressing did you use? Did you boil it? By maybe eating a cabbage, you deny all your other consumption issue.

That cabbage does not make you am omnivore, Fants. I think it makes you a sous chef.

      • T.Fanty says:

Ah. That explains why Cumby likes me to wear a chef’s hat when we visit the drawing room at Thornfield (I could do without him singing like The Swedish Chef from the muppets while we’re there, though).

    • Paula says:

I take issue with her assertion that you can “choose” to want to be with a woman one day. Not that it ultimately matters but most people don’t choose their sexuality.

  2. marie says:

I’m going with.. she’s kinda dumb.

  3. Hipocricy says:

She is a bimbo who is so dumb that she ignores her own condition.

It always saddens me when a woman over 35, with financial means to upgrade from that condition, keeps on getting dumber as years goes by.

    • irishserra says:

Unfortunately, more money doesn’t necessarily translate to more smarts.

    • Roo says:

      This. What an idiot.

    • Hakura says:

@Hypocricy – Well, one would need to have at least a little intelligence to start with, in order to not only want to improve yourself, but be willing to put forth the effort required to do so. Not lookin’ good for Zoe.

  4. su says:

This, coupled with the FOOLISHNESS of her comments on the term ‘people of colour’ I guess she really is basic.

  5. bns says:

Being bisexual doesn’t make someone androgynous though, right?

I really can’t stand her and I can’t wait for her Nina Simone biopic to bomb.

    • V4Real says:

She needs a good shaking. I have no desire to see her as Nina.

The bi-sexual revealation is nothing new CDAN revealed a long time ago that she was bi. Most of their blinds are full of it but there have been some that were proven to be true.

    • SE says:

“Being bisexual doesn’t make someone androgynous though, right?”

Right. Two different things; you can be both, or you can be one and not the other. Zoe doesn’t understand what the term means.

    • SE says:

      (sorry for the duplicate post!)

  6. truthSF says:

Ugh…this simple minded chick. Tilda Swinton can teach this girl what an androgynous is.

    • Random says:

Exactly. Or Andrej Pejic. Which makes me think what she’s trying to say here? That she’s really a transgender man? Then she’s still NOT androgynous.

Sorry. Her ignorance makes me angry.

      • DeltaJuliet says:

Right? Or is she a hermaphodite? Which still wouldn’t be the same as androgynous. I think she’s just clueless. Trying and failing to be edgy.

      • Ayame says:

“Trying and failing to be edgy.” This.

    • FLORC says:

      TruthSF
Tilda is the walking definition of androgynous along with Jamie Lee Curtis and Annie Lennox. And not to leave out the men… David Bowie:)

She must have had a late night conversation with wine and people of matching intelligence tossing out words that sound nice. Like how Dina said cell phones weren’t as “organic” in the early 90’s as they are now in the Dr. Phil interview. Chris Pine needs to give her a slap with his masters degree on the red carpet.

  7. Gwen says:

She has been “attracted to male species”? I didn’t know humans came in more species than one.. She sounds really dumb to me o.O

  8. Poppy says:

I think she just has misunderstood what androgynous means – she’s looking for a word that means bisexual, without actually saying bisexual, but androgynous isn’t it!

    • Jenny says:

I think maybe she was just thinking open, progressive, non-conformist. I don’t know what she meant to say but androgynous definitely does not fit the bill. I think she tries to use bigger words or phrase things in a way to sound smarter or more educated, and instead makes herself sound like a dummy (ie “the male species”????).

    • juststeph says:

I think she is confusing ambivalent and androgynous?

  9. Andrea says:

I go back and forth on Zoe. I think she’s a beautiful woman but I also think she looks drawn and too thin the majority of the time. I like that she cares about things and speaks up but I don’t always agree with her opinions. I think she likes attention and seeks attention.

Maybe she will turn in some amazing acting in this Simone movie so that I can just focus on her acting and forgive the other stuff.

  10. Sisi says:

Lol, and she always wears red carpet clothes with lace, glitter, flowers, frills, or bows, so the she’s as unandrogynous as possible. Silly woman trying to sound interesting, and failing spectacularly.

  11. c'est la vie says:

It’s funny – she’s one of the stars that doesn’t bother me – unlike Reese Witherspoon and her dumb drunken rants. I could think of worse stars and starlets.

I actually liked some of her interview and she seems to take chances with her personal life and career.

  12. Elle says:

I did a Google search because I couldn’t remember what she said about the phrase “people of color” and found this article on Necole Bitchie regarding an interview she did for BET: http://bit.ly/13ye1am

I may regret saying this, but I think she did a better job of explaining herself there. Not denying some of her comments were irritating at best and offensive at worse, but with a bit more context, I can see where she’s coming from.

(Should I start ducking now? Will you all start throwing shoes/tomatoes/cell phones/whatever-will-leave-a-mark at me?)

    • Jenny says:

I think all of us here yearn for a world where race or ethnicity is not an issue, but that is not the world we live in. I think she comes off as really ignorant. It’s also pretty stupid that one of the next responses she gives is that she most identifies with the African American community. I thought you didn’t see race or ethnicity Zoe?

I think maybe she is just saying things she thinks will make her different or interesting? Ugh

    • T.Fanty says:

I get where she is coming from. The obsession with identifying another’s ethnic heritage is a really debilitating simplification of identity, but oh dear lord does she sound foolish trying to explain it.

To be honest, I think she’s just selling self-definitions that she thinks are provocative to make herself sound more interesting than she is.

      • Hakura says:

@T.Fanty – I agree. I think she’s trying to make comments that could come across ‘provocative’ to some (for the sake of garnering more attention…Which I guess it has so far). I’m sure she’s trying to say what she thinks will get her the best response (at the time), but that it causes her to contradict herself, making her look either dumb, or just full of it.

She needs to practice these sorts of things ahead of time, to avoid putting her foot in her mouth so often.

      • Myrto says:

I hate these celebrities who pretend to be bisexual in order to titillate the male gaze (and of course we’re only talking about female celebrities) and to sound open-minded and “edgy”. Ugh. Sexual orientation isn’t a trend or a “cool attitude” to have, it’s an identity and I wish idiots like Zoe Saldana would stop using it to appear cool.

  13. Hipocricy says:

She is neither androgynous neither bisexual…she is just a confused bimbo who used a big word she doesn’t fully understand to say something a little controversial (that she can end up with a woman) to trigger some interest in her vanilla persona.

Famous, androgynous celebrities were the likes of Grace Jones, Boy Georges, David Bowie, the late Freddy Mercury, ect…Even Prince could fall into that category and he is fully straight.

  14. MsAubra says:

This chick!! I am convinced she has been trying in some low key way to keep Bradley Cooper’s attention too! Girl just hush and brush up on your acting skills and stop trying to be oh so edgy!

  15. Insomnicole says:

    Sigh. She’s lucky that she’s so pretty…

  16. mata says:

Well, to be fair, she did clarify things. Before, we only thought she didn’t know what the word meant. Now, we definitely know she doesn’t know what the word means.

  17. Hipocricy says:

At least she used ANDROGYNOUS to mean bisexual.

It could have been worse. She could have used HERMAPHRODITE. She is is dumb !

  18. Miss M says:

“Classic” case of pretty and dumb woman combo.

  19. TG says:

This would make sense since I figure she was branding for Bradley Cooper. I have always liked Zoe and she does sound a bit dumb so hopefully she will just keep her mouth shut and not ruin my affection for her.

  20. Amy says:

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

  21. Lauren Carter says:

115 pounds of pure idiocy…. *Shoves microphone in Zoe’s face* “Zoe! Zoe! So do you like men or women? Or both?”
*Zoe fixes the flower in her hair and twirls her red dress* “B*tch, I might be.”

  22. smee says:

Yesterday there was a headline on Dlisted that read:

    “Zoe Saldana – naked, stupid”

That pretty much sums this up.

  23. Kristine says:

Cleopatra was Greek. Egypt was occupied by foreign rulers. I think that is where a lot of people get into trouble/confused. She also was not a traditional beauty and fairly homely. Liz Taylor was a stretch in the role. BUT Cleo was smart, cunning and very knowing on the workings of man so she had her ways….

    • FLORC says:

      Kristine!
You accurate knowledge of history has no place here! History is best told and absorbed through the Hollywood standard of miscasting and romantic, yet historically inaccurate rewrites!

Sadly, many people only know of Cleopatra through Elizabeth Taylor’s role. 🙁

  24. grabbyhands says:

Oh dear, it sounds like someone isn’t getting enough attention during the latest Trek release.

You can androgynous all you want, it still does not mean what you think it means.

  25. III says:

I figured she was bi. It’s been out there awhile. Her & Cooper co-bearding.

  26. ctkat1 says:

Years ago (during the promotion tour for Avatar, I think?) I saw her on Letterman. She came out, and he asked her a very generic question like, “Where did you grow up?” and she immediately launched into this soliloquy about a childhood in among the fruit trees and midnight drums of the Dominican Republic that was so incredibly pretentious and yet also not that evocative or intelligent that I just felt embarrased for the girl…and Letterman had no idea how to respond to it, so he let it hang for an awkward few seconds and then moved on.
That’s my impression of Zoe Saldana- beautiful, decent actress, but is fronting in a way that she can’t actually back up intellectually.

    • MsAubra says:

LMAO I remember another interview of hers she did that was something like that! I can’t remember what show. But now that I see between her late show appearances and print interviews, she’s desperate to be seen as “feircely intelligent” LMAO!

  27. lisa2 says:

I just find it so funny how all these women are trying so hard to be “unique”. To be the next woman that get the attention. We just see it over and over; I’m sexy, edgy, bisexual. But they still don’t fascinate.

I think they are all trying to create an image.

  28. Stacia says:

NEWSFLASH! Zoe does not know the meaning of or context in which to use the word ANDROGYNOUS. Tilda Swinton and Davis Bowie(back in the day) are androgynous looking. Someone give this chic a dictionary and tell her not to use words with more than 3 syllables.

  29. Chloeeee says:

err, maybe she was thinking ambiguous?

  30. Starlight says:

She must be so in love with Bradley Cooper that she could not let go that she had to resort to this. Jilted big time. She is beautiful, she does not have to do this. One day she will find the right man. She does not have to destroy her life this way.

  31. Agitation says:

I honestly don’t get the hype over this woman’s looks. She always has the most unpleasant old-lady grimace on her face and has a tiny weirdly shaped alien head.

  32. Agitation says:

I honestly don’t get the hype over this woman’s looks. She always has the most unpleasant old-lady grimace on her face and has a tiny weirdly shaped alien head.

  33. Kemten says:

I think she wanted to say she was sexually ambiguous… but I don’t think she’s being genuine. She’s trying to build an image, so snotty and annoying. Ok Gwenneth Palthrow much

  34. Jade says:

I can’t decide if she is attractive or not. That’s how ambivalent I feel.

  35. Goldie says:

After watching a few interviews of hers I think I may have figured out why people think she is dumb for using the word “androgynous” incorrectly. She went to school for 7 years in the Dominican Republic. I don’t think she is dumb. I think she used the wrong word. She should have said “ambiguous”, but maybe that word is not in her vocabulary.
Having said that, the whole vibe of that part of the interview gave me the impression that she was trying to make herself more appealing/edgy to the public (gay & straight) and to also promote a movie. We all need to remember, it’s all about the $$$ when it comes to these interviews.
