Rachel Zoe pregnant with her second child at the age of 41: bananas?

For the past year (or longer), Rachel Zoe’s empire has been in free-fall. Her ready-to-wear line isn’t selling and it’s been dropped from several major retailers. The ratings for her Bravo show were in the toilet, and I think The Rachel Zoe Project is canceled now, right? Or close to being canceled. And to add insult to injury, Rachel’s A-list clients are dropping her because of her sky-high rates. What I’m saying is that Rachel has had some time on her hands. So why not get pregnant again, I guess? Us Weekly claims that Rachel is expecting her second child:

Looks like Rachel Zoe is going to need some new maternity clothes. The fashion designer, 41, is pregnant with her second child, sources tell Us Weekly exclusively.

Zoe and husband Rodger Berman — who married in 1996 — are already parents to son Skyler, born in March 2011. Speaking to MSN’s WonderWall about motherhood in January, the Rachel Zoe Project star and famed celebrity stylist said that dressing her 2-year-old little boy is her greatest joy in life.

“Oh my God, my husband laughs at me because I spend more time in his closet in the morning than I do in my own. And, you know, it’s incredibly fun. It’s like having a live doll. And he loves it,” Zoe said of her son.

“Right now, he loves getting dressed,” she added. “At some point, I’m sure in a year, he’s gonna hate everything I show him and just wanna wear, like, soccer uniforms or something.”

In the meantime, Zoe is savoring every moment with the sweet tot. “He’s amazing!” she gushed to Us Weekly last fall. “He just makes me laugh from morning until night. He gets cuter every second of every minute.”

Zoe’s rep had no comment on the pregnancy.

[From Us Weekly]

If it’s true, then good for her. Rodger really wanted to be a father and he spent years pleading with Rachel to have a baby. I was surprised by how little drama (health-wise) her first pregnancy entailed. When she gave birth to Skylar, everything went fine and he was he a healthy weight and he seems like a perfectly healthy little boy. I know some over-40 pregnancies can be difficult, but I suspect Rachel knows what she’s doing now that she’s already been through it once before. Congrats.

ugh… i hope this one is a girl, so that little boy doesn’t have to wear her fashion atrocities any longer…

    • Lilo says:

I read that she really wanted him to be a girl when she was pregnant, wanted to be a girls-mom…and looking at him I kinda get the feeling she made him a girl.

      • holly hobby says:

Which is unfortunate because that poor child will be picked on when he goes to school. I’ve seen long hair on boys but Skylar’s borders on girl ringlets (and no, I don’t think it naturally curls in sausage curls. She probably put him on rollers).

I hope she has that girl.

    • bluhare says:

      Amen to both of you.

      • kct says:

Yep, have thought the same thing all along. He is a beautiful little boy who looks very much like a beautiful little girl.

  2. bammer says:

No I hope its not a girl because the pressure on a daughter to stay thin enough to fit in designer outfits would be staggering. Zoe would crush up diet pills and put them in that kids cereal….when she would actually be “allowed” to eat.

  3. Suze says:

I’m just a little stunned that Rachel Zoe is only 41.

Snark aside, congrats to the fam.

    • candice says:

41? I’m not buying that either. She looks much older. Age and her emaciated state worked against her but she obviously lucked out or had some medical help.

      • Joy says:

A little fat plumps up the face. And she has NO extra fat.

      • springingforward says:

I am side eyeing that age of 41; seriously. She looks 63.

      • LeeBlaylock says:

Many, many, MANY actresses (and even actors) lie about their age. They have to. Hollywood is very ageist. I always laugh when someone says “oh, but that is their real age; I looked it up on wikipedia (or some other site)”. These sites only report what age the actress claims to be. They don’t actually dig up her birth certificate to find her date of birth.

    • Hautie says:

Sadly, Zoe has the face of someone who has starved herself.

When she was in the last month of her last pregnancy, her face stopped looking so haggard. It had soften up. And she looked closer to her actual age.

Versus now. Where she does honestly look like she is in her mid-50’s.

    • bluhare says:

And she had some serious work done a while back, which made her look much better believe it or not.

    • littlestar says:

I know! I try not to be too snarky about peoples looks (unless it’s warranted), but I am always blown away by how many wrinkles she has for her age! Honestly, I’d rather have a bit of fat in me and nice smooth skin than a haggard face that makes you look twenty years older! 🙁

    • Nikki says:

I know right? She has the worst skin I’ve seen on a 41 year old.

  4. Kristen says:

Donor eggs. Unless these celebs all froze their eggs when they were younger, a decent portion of these over-40 celeb pregnancies are with donor eggs. I even read a Slate article a while back that said it’s Hollywood’s little secret. Not that it makes the baby any less “yours” to use a donor egg – you’re the one doing all the mothering of the child once it’s born – but I hate when celebrity women perpetuate the myth that it’s possible (even easy!) to get pregnant on your own past age 40. And I know people will comment that they/their mom/their aunt/their BFF got pregnant after 40 with no problem – yea, it happens. But it’s not as common as Hollywood would let you believe.

    • Suze says:

      I know – I KNOW.

There are so many anecdotes out there about women getting pregnant over 40, even 45, naturally and with no problem when the reality is that is is a very difficult path. And the risk of miscarriage is much, much higher.

And these high-profile Hollywood pregnancies feed into the myth that it’s not that big of a deal.

    • Ali says:

Lol. I was about to post that most women in my family and the people around me have gotten pregnant well in their 40s.

    • fabgrrl says:

Hm….I’m going to disagree. I believe that throughout history, women have had children well into their 40s. I don’t think you stopped pumping them out until you were menopausal or dead. I think what is unusual now it women having their FIRST child post-40.

      • Tessa says:

Yes, it’s the starting to have kids in your 40’s thing that’s new. A lot of my mom’s friends had their 3rd, 4th, or 5th after 40. My grandmother did too. I’m still in my late 20’s, so my friends aren’t there yet, but I have a few cousins that are pregnant now. One is 41 and the other is 39. It happens.

      • Trillion says:

Having kids later is becoming more common- esp. where I live in the Bay Area – and hopefully more accepted. Life expectancy is increasing and in our culture, we actually have such a thing as adolescence and “extended adolescence”. (in much of the world, you’re a girl and then- boom!- you are a woman, having child after child. No in-between stage!)

    • Momoftwo says:

I know several friends (4 or 5)that got pregnant in their early forties (accidentally because they also thought it would be hard for them to get pregnant), carried to term and had healthy babies.

You can’t assume a woman over 40 MUST take measures to get pregnant.

      • lisa says:

i’m my mother’s only child, she was 45 when she got pregnant totally by surprise and without any medical help (if they even had any back then)

      • Moncheechee says:

It’s true what you guys are saying, my granny had my aunt at like 40 or beyond. I’m a nurse and it put it in perspective for me when one of my coworkers pointed out that as long as you’re still cycling you can get pregnant.

      • Fatkid says:

Just going to saw this. I had a friend in her mid-forties who was very surprised to find herself pregnant. She didn’t think it was possible for her to get pregnant, but she had a very smooth, full-term pregnancy with a gorgeous and very healthy baby girl. It happens

      • LeeBlaylock says:

Its not like someone would have to be a nurse to understand that if you are still cycling, you can get pregnant.

    • Marigold says:

You’re also doing all the mothering by, you know, gestating the baby. That’s an important detail you left out.

      • Kristen says:

Why is that detail important? Does gestating the baby make you more of a mother than someone who adopted an infant?

      • LeeBlaylock says:

Kristin, I often see this overly defensive attitude. Nobody said gestating a baby was the only way to be a mother, but its one way of mothering. Birthmothers who give their babies up for adoption gestate the baby, which is an act of love for the child they carry. Did you know that? You write off pregnancy as if its nothing, but guess what? There wouldn’t be any children to adopt, if they were not gestated by someone.

    • Bridget says:

And there are all the comments that people know someone who got pregnant in their 40s and it must indeed be super easy for everyone. It is indeed harder (though obviously not impossible) to naturally get pregnant after 40, with higher miscarriage rates and risk of birth defects. It is a HUGE gamble to wait until after 40 to start a family. My grandmother had her last (of 7!) in her 40s, and yet my own mother couldnt carry a full term pregnancy after 40. And honestly, we’re talking medical fact here. Talk to an OB if you disagree.

    • Liveandletlive says:

Kristen I’m 44 and had my last child at 42. He’s two now. And I didn’t have any help. I never thought I was “lucky” that I was able to get pregnant. I’m sure that some celebs can get pregnant on their own without help. And perhaps that number is larger than you would think. Either way, congrats to her.

      • Fatkid says:

Agree. I think it feels shocking because it is different than previous generations and because most of us are to tired to even consider it in our forties (working etc). That said, I’m pretty sure I won’t entertain the idea of kids until 40.

      • shanti says:

same .. first at 41 second at 43 no problems ..perfect pregnancies ..I know that Im a much better mum in my forties than i Ever would have been im my turbulent younger years…

  5. marie says:

what an adorable little boy. my nephew used to have those kind of curls until my sil got scissor happy..

  6. Barrett says:

She has a look about her that makes it surprising she is only 41 and still fertile. I feel mean but it’s true. I imagine her not eating and puffing a cigarette. Wonder if she had any help or it was natural? Overall, here’s to a healthy baby.

  7. Jayna says:

I watched her show just to see that little boy. Gorgeous. They make beautiful babies.

  8. LahdidahBaby says:

His eyes are gorge. Must be hard to be so overly managed, poor sweet-faced kid.

  9. DanaG says:

I bet Skylar is praying for a girl so she will stop dressing him up and cut his hair! LOL Congrats I think motherhood has softened her they both love being parents. I actually thought Rachel was older then 41!

  10. lisa2 says:

He is just an adorable little boy. He looks like her. Love those curls. And whenever I see him I always think of those calendars of children in fields of flowers or water buckets. He always looks like he heading to a photoshoot.

    he is precious.

  11. Erinn says:

There was a huge blowup over that photo of him with the flowers. People were outraged because she dresses him ‘like a girl’, and she curls his hair. Everyone was up in arms about how he was going to get picked on and all that jazz.

I agree with both sides on that one. Personally, I don’t really care what you do with your kids as long as it’s not harming them. But at the same time, it seems like she treats him more like a doll than a child, which is sad.

  12. serena says:

I don’t know how a person who dresses so badly -and with that horrible hairstyle- can be a stylist.

  13. Micki says:

    She has an adorable boy.

I won’t say she’s babanas for trying for baby after 40.
Women’s bodies are so different. Some get early menopause in their mid 30’s and some get pregnant in their mid 40’s

I myself decided to stop at 38 because I didn’t want to press my luck.
I have 2 healthy children and 2 miscarriages. With age the chance of another increases and the recovery (physically) takes longer.
Genetic disorders happen more often and the delivery (told by friends) can be a real struggle.
Another point not to have children too late is not to leave them alone in the world too soon.
I’ve no problem per se with 40 smth. mother but with 50 or even 60 y-old women I think it’s not about the baby but more about the personal “fulfilment”. But is every “old” mother healthy enough at the time the child is 10? Or 20?

So, being opinionated, judgmental bitch I draw a line at 40.

  14. wowsa says:

Congrats to the family. That little boy is beautiful.

  15. Kristine says:

Those are natural curls. If I had a little boy with curls like that I wouldn’t cut them either. WAY to CUTE!!Also she isn’t dressing him like a boy she is offering him cute little boy outfits. He isn’t 5 and in a dress and even if he were why are we stereo typing them so young. kids just like to dress up and have fun. My two year old girl is way into fedoras and cowboy boots right now and she looks awesome.

  16. RHONYC says:

    okay, i’ll admit it.

one weekend i found myself watching re-runs of her show thinking i’d pick up styling tips…only to realize that i actually kept watching because her baby is so BEAUTIFUL!!!

i mean that Skyler is a Raphealite angel and i think it’s a hoot how she dresses him & the husband lays into her spending and goes behind her back to put him in basketball jersey & sneaks.

    so hilarious! 😀

  17. Chickie Baby says:

Skylar is a darling little tot, all right. He needs a little sis or brother just so he can have a partner in crime to terrorize his mom as he gets older.

Rachel needs to back away from design and stick with styling…she knows fashion and clothing and how to dress people with other peoples’ designs. But all her own stuff was so trendy it was bound to fail.

  18. NorthernLala says:

Who is Rachel Zoe? I’m not kidding.

  19. hopperlea says:

My son is 2 and has very tight natural curls and I refuse to cut them. Not every little boy should look like the rest.

  20. Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

    She’s only 41?

  21. j.eyre says:

My son never challenges my fashion choices for him. Even school shopping he tells me to go without him and he will wear what I select. He’s 8. I cannot purchase a thing without my 6 year old daughter for fear she won’t ever wear it. She has definitive tastes.

  22. Elle says:

If she makes kids that cute she should have as many as she can. Skyler is simply adorable. Go Rachel!!

  23. lisa says:

a lot of first time moms raise their baby like a veal for a while, the 2nd baby will force her to relax

it is much harder to dress 2 kids like little lord fauntleroy and keep them clean

  24. janie says:

Congrats to them both! Her son is beautiful..

  25. Mandy says:

So cute! He is totally a Mini Roger! I can’t help but like Rachel Zoe, though I do admit I don’t watch her show anymore. Congrats!

  26. aislyn says:

LOL at the headline. What’s “bananas” is expecting people to believe this woman is 41. Come on, seriously? When you look at people like Sandra Bullock and Halle Berry who really are in their 40’s, this haggard woman looks years older.

She’s got major health problems ahead of her — osteoporosis for one. I know it’s too late for this, but eat a sandwich lady and get healthy.

  27. skipper says:

I think they are a beautiful family! I think Rachel is really good at what she does and it is unfortunate that her business is not doing well. I do hope she gets a girl this time so she can have fun dressing her up. Her son doesn’t seem bothered by the way his mom does his hair or dresses him. It’s probably in his blood to love fashion just like his parents. Good for them! 🙂

    • makes no sense says:

“beautiful family”??? what have you been smoking/snorting? this gal is a bag of bones and looks like an unmade bed. there’s no well in h*ll she’s only 41.

  28. Dml says:

People need to relax with criticizing his hair. She’s annoying and vapid-she’s fair game. His hair is long because they’re observant, practicing Jews. This is perfectly normal. A Jewish boy doesn’t get his hair cut until 3 years old.

    • Lucky Charm says:

I’m not Jewish, and I refused to cut off my sons beautiful blond curls. When he was a year and a half old, though, his dad threatened to take him to the barber himself, if I didn’t, because he was tired of people saying what a cute little girl our son was. His curls never grew back. 🙁

      • Bbb1975 says:

I’m not Jewish either, and I refused to cut my youngest sons long blonde hair also. He was just so darn cute. His dad took him, after someone commented on his “beautiful daughter” when he was 3. I admit now it was time 🙁

  29. Bridget says:

Her show was more interesting in the earlier seasonsbecause it was a behind the scenes look at celebrity styling – the photo shoots, the fashion shows, the award shows, and all the stuff that it takes to make it happen. It gave access to things that we dont get to see otherwise. Was Zoe a terrible boss? Oh yeah. She’s like nails on a chalkboard. But the biggest issue with the show wasnt her abrasive personality so much as the fact that it shifted focus to her fashion line and that business. Its just not interesting, and Zoe and Roger just arent compelling enough on their own. The fashion line is Rachel’s own taste, which is a little suspect (seriously, how many maxi dresses can you have?) but she’s unwilling to edit. Its like when she tried to put a train on that Armani dress Anne Hathaway wore to the Oscars a few years ago – yeesh. In fact, I’m a little surprised she hasnt messed up relationships with designers over suggestions like that.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree. Even though she is annoying, I enjoyed her show when she was a stylist because of the clothes. All those gorgeous Oscar dresses and runway shows were fun to watch. I don’t watch her show now because there’s not enough distraction from her grating personality and her whiny husband. They don’t seem very compatible to me.
I don’t care for her clothes, but I did buy one of her bags, and it was very high quality. Not inexpensive, but compared to a lot of designer bags, not insane.

    • Jayna says:

So true. And if last year was bad, this season is particularly boring. The design business is off the ground and really even less interesting this season. Nothing of interest. Storylines were nonexistent.

  30. buckley says:

I’m not a fan of seeing kids so fashionably done up…what’s next, a scarf?
    Roger is such a doofus.

  31. Regina Lynx says:

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand she’ll be well into her 60s when her kids will be in their 20s.

    Nice.

    • Jjmarie says:

Aaaaannnddd… Is 60 dead?? Get a life!!! I was born when my dad was 49… It was never an issue. Only ignorant people are an issue

  32. JessSaysNo says:

She really did his hair to make him look like a girl in that last pic. Good luck to her, pregnancy can be tough at any age, I imagine even tougher in your 40’s.

  33. Moi says:

I’m not a Rachel Zoe fan, but if she wants another child, what business is it of ours? I assume she’s using frozen eggs and assuming she’s older than the 41 she claims.

Anyway, there are a lot of celebs having babies at her age.
