Is Armie Hammer’s Men’s Health pictorial a gross glamorization of violence?

These are some new photos of Armie Hammer from his new Men’s Health pictorial. Isn’t this gross? Why did he agree to this? Why did he want to be made up to look like he just lost a major fistfight? Granted, Armie is a giant man-puppy so this could have been his editorial idea, to make himself look “hardcore” and “tough” and “not pretty”. But it’s gross. Imagine if a female model or actress had agreed to this editorial concept. We would all be screaming, for good reason – because if this was a woman, we would say it was glamorizing violence against women. So can we yell and scream about this glamorizing violence against men?

Anyway, Men’s Health hasn’t released any quotes from the interview, which is a shame because Armie Hammer doesn’t really know how to be withholding in interviews yet, which means his interviews are usually pretty interesting. I’m assuming he’s on the cover because of some late promotion for The Lone Ranger, which already bombed at the box office. I did want to mention this interesting interview from Jerry Bruckheimer (producer of The Lone Ranger), given to Vulture a few days ago:

Critics weren’t kind to the underperforming The Lone Ranger, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer believes the final verdict on the Johnny Depp movie (which cost roughly $250 million) has yet to be written.

“It reminds me of a critic who called Flashdance a ‘toxic dump,'” the legendary movie man told Vulture this morning, referencing the 1983 hit he produced with late partner Don Simpson. “Ten years later [the critic] said, ‘This is really a good movie. I missed it.’ I think [Lone Ranger] is going to be looked back on as a brave, wonderful film.”

At the TV Critics Association press tour to tout his new CBS action thriller Hostages, Bruckheimer brushed off the notion that poor reviews kept audiences from fully embracing Lone Ranger: “You always want to get good reviews, but you know, it’s reversed in Europe,” Bruckheimer said. “It’s 70 percent good reviews and 30 percent mixed there. So, that happens.”

[From Vulture]

Is The Lone Ranger getting good reviews in Europe? Because it got really bad reviews here. The American critics are really “over” Johnny Depp in general, I think. Which isn’t really Armie Hammer’s problem, except that he might have costarred with an actor who everyone thinks is annoying these days.

This is really disturbing. Whose idea was this and why would he ever agree to it?

  2. Andrea says:

What a horrible idea for a fitness shoot. Terrible!

  3. Emma says:

In the face closeups, it looks like he is mocking those photos of Gabriel Aubrey that did the rounds

  4. lisa2 says:

Sorry he is not a Tyler Durdan. And playing dress up doesn’t make you dirty sexy bad.

I think his PR team is struggling to find some kind of image for him. Trying to find a way to sell him to the movie going public. I think he just needs to do some interesting smaller roles to change his boring image. Because even talking about sexy time with his wife that nobody is really interested in is not going to help.

I agree that someone’s searching for an image for him. But this is an inexplicably bizarre and tasteless shoot…it doesn’t even fit with the image of the magazine. Maybe they’re having an identity crisis and trying to be more edgy too?

The shot of him smiling is so completely gross, made me lose my appetite.

    • mom2two says:

I agree. And I like the guy. If you do the edgy roles and do them well, there is no need to do a photoshoot that looks like you just left a bar fight.
It completely does not fit with Men’s Fitness at all.

He should go the Ryan Gosling route for a while.

    • Turtle Dove says:

      +1

This is lame. The guy is vanilla and this lame photo-shoot isn’t going to change his image.

Just checked Russian aggregate reviews – 3.7 out of 5 stars. I guess ‘decent’ bordering on ‘good’ – but this market loves all sort of second-rate action/adventure shit (sorry compatriots, but Russia was one of the biggest markets for Battleship and John Something on Mars movies last year).

And that shoot is disturbing and gross without a touch of ‘artsy’ and/or ‘edgy.’ Armie, I like you, so the next time JUST SAY NO.

  6. Lucy2 says:

Aside from the fact that it is tasteless and does glorify violence, it is also a flat out stupid idea for a photo shoot. I can’t believe they even put it on the cover- with no clever little headline to tie into why he’s all beat up, it looks so dumb.

    • lisa2 says:

That is the missing part. There is no contrast. If they had pics of him in a perfectly tailored suit and looking very “dapper” then they turn to these pics then maybe it would make some kind of gross sense. But putting that on the cover is weird. I thought this mag was like Shape for women.. “see how my body looks”… This would make sense on a GQ, Rolling Stone or even VAnity Fair.

    • Turtle Dove says:

It does say “Hammer your Body! The Lean Ranger Workout.” It’s just a lame idea.

Yuck, what a gross photoshoot. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a delibrate idea. I’ve said before, he makes the other fair-haired franchise leading men (say for example the Chrises, Hemsworth, Evans, and Pine) look positively edgy and rebellious!

  8. sarah says:

I’m not bothered by it but I don’t understand it. Then again, I don’t understand many pictorials that get done. They just don’t make sense. This doesn’t glamorize violence. People need to stop getting so worked up over small issues like a picture spread for a magazine. That being said, it’s still a stupid shoot.

  9. Keats says:

I will say this…at least they’re attempting something that’s not ‘angry man in a suit stands in industrial construction site, stares at camera.’ But while I think this photoshoot is dumb and confusing, i don’t read glorifying violence.

  10. Micki says:

…” look like he just lost a major fistfight? “…

It can’t be major! Olivier Martinez was not there.

  11. lisa says:

we are officially out of ideas

  12. Talie says:

It’s weird how his name is in such small letters all the way at the bottom.

    • Hakura says:

Maybe they were thinking that while they knew the odds were slim that a guy would pick up the magazine out of any interest in who this guy is, they might pick it up out of curiosity about the ‘beat up guy‘ on the cover.

  13. Christina says:

It is slightly arbitrary , but he is beat up in the beginning of The Lone Ranger. He is beaten and left for dead. So this particular photoshoot might be referencing that. As for it glorifying violence..really? So do more than half the movies and television shows out there. Lone Ranger had a lot of violence in it in fact. It is definitely a weird photoshoot for this mag, but I don’t think it is that big of deal. I think he looks pretty hot, even all bloody…LOL. It makes me wanna play nurse…

  14. diva says:

Justin Timberlake did a photo shoot like that several years ago and most recently Bieber. I’m not offended by it. Not the most creative thing but not a big deal either.

  15. Tig says:

Why does whoever feel the need to “package” him? He’s a good actor- he got rave reviews for “J Edgar”- and very good looking. I think that’s a pretty good package as it is. Photo shoot is pretty tasteless, but harmless.

  16. Summer says:

    I think he’s still hot 😐

  17. Nance says:

Make me think of the Fight Club posters.

Awkward, but me a big deal.
