Matt Damon agrees to have a beer with his biggest fan-girl, Benedict Cumberbatch

Remember how Benedict Cumberbatch gave that extremely fan-girly interview to Vulture right after he was nominated for an Emmy (his second nomination)? Cumberbatch discussed a lot in a short amount of time, but what was striking was how much he just completely gushed, gushed, gushed about his love for Matt Damon. You can read the full Vulture piece here – here’s the Damony part of it:

Vulture: How is Matt Damon your hero?
Cumberbatch: Well, he’s just so grounded. He’s so intelligent. He makes these smart choices, as an actor, as a producer, as a writer. He’s so composed. You never hear a bad word said about him. Everybody loves him. And he just sounds like he’s got his priorities right as a human being, and as an actor, he’s phenomenal. What a screen presence. I saw Promised Land on the way to New Zealand where I was doing some more work on Smaug, the dragon in The Hobbit, and it was again, another superlative performance, the writing with John Krasinski, and just a great, great drama, setting up those arguments about the future of small-town America, and really, all small communities across the world, the crisis they face about money and income versus environmental concerns and community. It was a peaceful way of tackling it. The minute Matt and Ben [Affleck] appeared on the scene with Good Will Hunting, you knew it was a special moment. To see such young talent take the reins and create the means of work as well as star in it, and just do every one of their jobs at every level superlatively, it was very exciting. I think he’s great. My biggest wish is to hang out with him!

Perhaps you’ll get to do so at the Emmys. You need a guys’ night out.
Yeah! I just want to get in a room with these guys and have conversations with them. I don’t know what I’d say to them. I’d be a bit star struck [around Pacino and Douglas], but at least with Matt, I can kind of quiz him. And then cut to a hot night where we’re all getting drunk and dancing and having a good time! Maybe it’ll have to be on another occasion, but wouldn’t that be cool, though? I would like to go out with that group full stop, wouldn’t you? That would be a fun dinner party. I think that would be great fun.

Yeah, you could pick each other’s brains, develop projects together, or not talk about work at all.
You’re saying that like you can facilitate it. Do you have Matt’s number? Can you pass along a message, and tell him that Benedict is a big fan and would like to hang? That would be brilliant.

[From Vulture]

See? Full-on fan-girl. Bless him. So, Matt Damon is beginning his promotional duties for Elysium and he was approached with Cumberbatch questions during his junket. NextMovie was the first outlet to tell Damon about Cumberbatch’s gushy Vulture interview, and Matt’s reaction is… measured. It’s like Matt isn’t sure if this woman is pulling his leg. When presented with Cumberbatch’s quotes, Matt says, “Definitely, definitely, we’ll have to go get a beer. That’s funny. He’s really good.” NextMovie also notes: “For what it’s worth, Damon’s publicist stopped us on the way out to say she’d dropped a line to Cumberbatch’s agent to make it happen.” YES!!

Matt Damon with a touch of grey at the temples? I’m SO THERE.

I’ll put a mini-fridge and a keg in my bedroom in case the boys want to have their meeting there.

    • Andrew says:

Can I just join them even though I don’t drink? I can make sure there’s no awkward silence

    • Sixer says:

If I hid in the wardrobe, would you mind? In my casting about for men yesterday, I’d forgotten Matt. I love him.

      • T.Fanty says:

You may observe. I love older Matt in his glasses, and Cumby may wear his grey cardigan (at the beginning, anyway). It’ll be like the ultimate hot-teacher combo. Combine that with Sharon Stone’s gourmet comments and I’m one very happy girl.

    • Anna says:

Um, he doesnt seem to be that into The Batch. Poor Cumby…

      • Noreen says:

From his reaction, I honestly wonder if Damon knows who Cumberbatch is. Damon doesn’t have a Hollywood life. When he’s not working he shrinks from the acting scene and spends time with his family. He may not be aware of Sherlock or BC’s other work, or if so maybe just peripherally. Or maybe Damon’s just not the effusive type…

  2. allons-y alonso says:

Who doesn’t want to have a pint with Matt Damon?
He won me over when he sang ‘Run’s House’ in Dogma

    • j.eyre says:

      Love the new Gravatar, Allons-Y

    • Anna says:

Meant to ask – are you a Fernando Alonso fan?

      • allons-y alonso says:

Hi Anna. The F1 racer? No, it’s a Doctor Who reference. *blush* Allons-y Alonso was one of the 10th Doctor’s catch phrases. 🙂

      • T.fanty says:

Huzzah! Anna had me worried for a moment there.

Allons-y, have you seen Broadchurch yet?

      • allons-y alonso says:

        Hi T.Fanty.
No! I haven’t had a chance to get into Broadchurch yet. I think it just started here in Australia on the ABC. Is it any good?

      • T.Fanty says:

Don’t know. It starts next week in the US, but I was just reading about it on The Guardian. THey list it as one of their best TV shows of the year (thus far).

      • allons-y alonso says:

hmmmm. I’ll give it a go. I always give a show 3 episodes before i decide if it’s worth investing in.

      • Anna says:

Ha, why did I have you worried? For the record, I have never seen an ep of Dr Who, so I didnt even know about any related Alonsos. But my BFF (a girl) races cars and majorly follows F1 and crushed on Fernando Alonso for a long time, thus the association 🙂

      • Sixer says:

Just to say: Broadchurch is very high qualidee stuff in terms of acting, cinematography, plotting, etc. But don’t expect anything um… groundbreaking or original or anything like that. It’s just a standard whodunnit – but it *is* a top drawer standard whodunnit.

That’s how I saw it. I don’t think you guys Stateside get the stuff from Channel 4 very often, do you? I tend to prefer that. Grittier, more unusual. Let me know if Utopia comes your way. Neil Maskell rocked the house in that.

      • T.Fanty says:

I’m waiting for Utopia – I heard it was amazing. We get a lot of British stuff on Netflix fairly quickly. That’s how I was able to watch Top of the Lake, which I think is only just being broadcast back home. I tried The Fall, which I didn’t like – I felt that it was style for style’s sake. I hear Utopia is chilling, and am watching out for it on itunes.

      • Sixer says:

It got a bit up itself at times, Utopia, but I really, really loved it. Maskell’s performance was unbelievably good.

What else have I enjoyed of late? Um… Olivia Colman was great in a C4 4-part drama Run a couple of weeks back. And if you see the French zombie thing, The Returned, anywhere, I’d go for that. BBC3 also had a good take on zombies with In the Flesh. Maison Close (another French one) has been a sometimes interesting, sometimes hilarious, experience! Top Boy was good and its second series is coming up.

      • T.Fanty says:

Excellent. Thanks for the recommendations. Have you seen Orange is the New Black on Netflix? I hear good things about it. I just started checking out Orphan Black, which is pretty good.

      • Sixer says:

I think I’m the only person around who doesn’t have Netflix – two sports fans and two film fans in the house, so we spend a fortune on all the bells and whistles Sky. Sky On Demand has the kind of choice Netflix does and I can watch it on laptop/tablet.

But I can’t bear to miss out so if there are many more Netflix only shows that look good, I’ll never resist!

    • allons-y alonso says:

Ah, fair enough 🙂 I’m quite useless at all things F1. My Doctor Who trivia on the other hand is not too shabby

      • Kronster says:

        T.Fanty
I love Orphan Black so much!
Hope they don’t turn it into the next soap opera with 99 seasons. I actually think 1 season would’ve been enough 🙂

  3. Lucretia says:

The Cumberbatch quotations? That kind of public slobbering is why I can’t stand the guy. Matt Damon is obviously being polite.

    • Naomi says:

      @Sixer
Utopia was the best. I have also caught Black Mirror through a blurb I caught some where that referenced Robert Downey, Jr. and his wife Susan optioning one of the episodes to expand into a film. The episode where everyone has an implant that allows you to replay every moment of your existence. An internal DVR if you will. BBC4 rocks.

You should check out Secret State and Bluestone42 if you have not already. I met the director of Secret State a few weeks ago but I got no clue if there will be more. I hope so.

      • Sixer says:

Oh yes! I forgot those! T.Fanty – I think you’d like Black Mirror particularly.

    • Naomi says:

      @T.Fanty
Orphan Black is great. I just heard about Orange is the New Black it is next on my list. Check out House of Cards it is lovely.

      • T.Fanty says:

        Fab – thanks!

      • Just So says:

I’ve just finished episode 4 of Orange is the New Black, and I am quite enjoying it. It definitely has the feel of something that would be on HBO or Showtime. The writing is really well done, and that’s always a sticking point for me. If the writing sucks, I just can’t watch it, no matter what actors are attached.

  4. MissMary says:

I used to not be into Damon, thought he looked too juvenile or something, but my god is that man aging well. His acting, I’ve always liked, but I didn’t “get” the “omg, he’s so sexy” until the past year or so.

  5. Vee says:

Matt is a great husband, father, actor, writer. He is one of the good guys and looking hot too!

  6. Maria says:

I’ve always liked him as a person, actor, and father; he puts his family first and send like a mellow dude.

I don’t need him tainted by Benedict.

    /no offense to Cumberbitches

  7. Noreen says:

Meh. I don’t care about this. Actors brown-nosing each other. I never like it no matter who the players are. And I still maintain that Cumberbatch is a far superior actor than Damon, so the “fan-girling” actually annoys me a little. Know your worth, Benedict.

  8. Jayna says:

He has a smile that transforms him. When he smiles, I melt.

  9. Jayna says:

I have to watch the Talented Me. Ripley again. Jude Law was too beautiful for words, and Matt was brilliant in it.

  10. Vesta says:

I’m loving his quite mellow reaction. It seems genuine, and not too ass-kissing. I respect Matt and cannot wait to see Elysium.

As for BCumby’s fangirly gushing I would say his PR worked – he got a nod from Damon. I think BC certainly isn’t just a blabbermouth who is a bit unaware of the power of media…

  11. Nanea says:

I had the huge luck to witness a day of filming of Clooney’s Monuments Men in Berlin in April. Damon is impressive, and I like how he’s able to snap out of it when the cameras are not rolling, unless some of his method colleagues who can be quite annoying if they stay in character even when on a meal break.

Sorry for going a little off topic with this Cumbersome input that I found on the Guardian site earlier today.

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Nanea, who wrote: “Damon is impressive, and I like how he’s able to snap out of it when the cameras are not rolling, …”

I’ve read this in interviews with two of his female co-stars: Julia Stiles and Scarlet Johansson.

Julia Stiles said her first day on the “Bourne Supremacy” set was spent with the cold barrel of a gun press up against her head (the scene where Jason Bourne told her if she didn’t answer his questions honestly, he’d kill her … and when he insisted he’d been in Berlin for his first ‘job’ and she didn’t know what he was talking about, he pushed her down and put the gun to her head). She said it was an intense scene, but as soon as the camera stop rolling, Matt would start cracking jokes and lightening the mood. But as soon as the camera started again, he was right back in the intensity. She said it was incredible to witness.

Scarlet Johansson, who starred with Matt in “We Bought a Zoo” (she was SO miscast … Amy Adams was robbed of that role, and would have been perfect in it, too!). She said Damon has that old school, Movie Star quality and charisma about him (that’s the same thing Clint Eastwood said about Angelina Jolie) that was cool to see. She said one minute he’d be talking and joking and the next second, when the camera started rolling, he’d be deep in character.

      • Noreen says:

I’ve no reason to doubt Damon’s like-ability, but these stories from colleagues are par for the course. When promoting movies these actors are contractually obligated to not only sing the praises of their project but also about the actors, writers, and director involved.

Basically Hollywood is one giant load of crap and spin where almost every single human being works off a script whenever they’re in front of a camera–be it for filming a movie or promoting one.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Noreen, who wrote: “I’ve no reason to doubt Damon’s like-ability, but these stories from colleagues are par for the course.”

Actually, the Julia Stiles interview was a couple of years past the “Bourne” trilogy. It was right before her stint as Lumen Pierce in Season 5 of “Dexter,” which would have been what … cica 2010? The last ‘Jason Bourne’ film, “The Bourne Ultimatum,” was released in 2007.

  12. GeeMoney says:

Good for him, although I find the amount of gushing that my boy Ben is pushing toward Matt a bit nauseating. Oh well. Hope they have fun.

  13. haley says:

as a long time celebitchy reader (about five years) i have to say that i’m about to throw in the towel with this website after all these cumberbatch posts. fassbender was bad enough. i wont let the door hit me.

    • Vesta says:

This is a Matt Damon post, isn’t it ?
It’s not Matt’s fault that BC wanted to lick his ass. But yeah, honestly I get what you mean; try to hang on there, it’ll pass like Fassy did 🙂

    • Noreen says:

      @ haley

What a truly strange thing to say. You’d stop coming here because there’s ONE post per day that you don’t like? There are probably 3-4 posts each day that I have zero interest in. It doesn’t stop me from coming here.

      • Haley says:

no. it’s the MULTIPLE posts a day about this (unattractive and mildly talented) man that aren’t newsworthy or interesting at all. it has little to do with not having interest and more to do with the fact that celebitchy’s latest obsession with this guy is insufferable.

      • bluhare says:

        Agree with overexposed cumberbatch.

      • Noreen says:

        MILDLY TALENTED??

What a bizarre statement. So bizarre, in fact, that I’m certain you’ve never even seen him act. No one who sees him act would describe him as mildly talented.

His looks are certainly up for debate. But not his talent, which is not only NOT “mild”, but exceptional.

    • Haley says:

I actually find it really troubling that you’re getting this worked up over a comment on a gossip website. this is my comment/discussion thread so no, I don’t think I’ll “SCROLL” being that I’m the person who began the discussion. I dont have any kind of “drive” to insult cumberbatch and all I did was state an opinion. yeah, it’s disappointing that celebitchy has gone from being a witty and captivating website to a cumberbatch-fassbender fan site and as a longtime reader I have every right to point it out. sorry that I insulted your favorite but you really need to accept that not everyone has the same taste/opinion as you.

    • Haley says:

@miss m- thank you! it’s good to see that I’m not the only person here going crazy.

  14. Mandy says:

Gosh, I love a gray haired Matt Damon. SWOON!

  15. Allijo says:

Hopefully Matt will give Cumby some advice on how to find a normal wife not in the business and not famewhorey.

There is no such thing as too much Matt Damon. sigh

  16. bet says:

I think Damon though the interviewer was winding him up. I can see why he;d be cautious. For all he knew the quotes were made up or an exaggeration. He could have looked stupid.

Interesting that the rep rushed to confirm they;d made contact before the journalist left.

  17. Jennifer12 says:

Matt Damon…. SIGH. That’s all I have since he turns me into a puddle of longing.

  18. Kristine says:

Gawd.. When he smiles… It’s so sexy.

  19. Elise says:

Love both Cumby and Damon. Shoot if I was in Cumby shoes I would put it out there that I wanted to meet a person I admire to.

    • allheavens says:

From some of these post you’d think celebrities should never utter a word of praise for anyone they admire, have a social life or be seen in public other than on the screen.

      The ridiculousness is astounding.

    • Katy says:

I agree. Most people would, regardless of some of the snide remarks on this thread.

  20. Leah says:

I love Matt!!! By the way it didnt seem like he was sure who cumberbatch is.

  21. E-v-E says:

this time next year everybody will be kissing Cumby’s ass in Hollywood and since he’s so charming, smart and outgoing he’ll probably be A-listers’ ‘best’ friend. I’m sure everyone knows Cumberbatch is coming, you can see Matt saying twice that he’s good. He may not be the new Clooney, but he can act their socks off and they know it. I also don’t think this fangirling was accidental, Matt has become very respected and well conected in HW so it would be useful to have him as a friend, as he is also probably a nice, grouned guy.

    • Noreen says:

I actually don’t want this to be true. Hollywood sucks the souls (and talent) out of people. Many have done great work in their own countries but felt H’Wood was some sort of acting Mecca, only to find H’Wood doesn’t give a sh*t about art. Only making a fast buck and then chews artists up and spits them out. I dare someone to show me ONE case where this hasn’t been true.

Matt Damon is only one of the good guys because he got married, had kids, and deliberately flies under the radar. In fact, the ONLY ones who make it in H’wood year after year are almost always people with spouses and children, and who make it their lifestyle to stay away from the scene.

If an actor actively courts H’wood, he will be ruined.

      • izzy says:

I think you have to “actively court” Hollywood until you actually make it, ya know? Then, you have more freedom to distance yourself, because you’re already established and you know you’ll get the roles. Most of the A-listers- Brad, George, Damon, Affleck, Cruise (I guess?), Cooper, DiCaprio had to pay their dues and make the rounds. His effusive praise, though… yeah, I kind of rolled my eyes. Whatever makes it work, I suppose.

I don’t want Cumby to become too Hollywood. It seems like he’s going to continue to base himself out of London, so at least he’s not constantly bombarded by living in Hollywood. He may not have a wife and kids, but his parents seem to be pretty big influences, and they are probably there to ground him. he seems to have a pretty robust friends circle that seem to genuinely care for him, and c’mon, let’s face it- he’s not some babe in the woods, he’s a grown man who has been in the business, and hopefully knows not to let it eat him alive. Hopefully. (please, cumby, don’t become an alcoholic douchebag modelizer LA washout)

      • Miss Melissa says:

        Hiddles, she’s talking to you.

  22. Ella says:

I’m sure it would be good for Benedict to have Matt as a friend. Specially now when he’s becoming bigger in the movie world. I’d rather see Benedict bee frinds with him than people like Katia. Just can’t get of the feeling that she was using him for her pr.

I’m sure they would like eatchothers as both seems like very nice and grounded guys.

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Ella, who wrote: “I’m sure it would be good for Benedict to have Matt as a friend. Specially now when he’s becoming bigger in the movie world.”

Yes, it was a very smart move (no shade at all … Cumby won me over with his turn as Khan in “Star Trek: Into Darkness”). Matt Damon is moving to Los Angeles from New York City because he and Ben Affleck just created a production company together titled ‘Pearl Street Films’ (or is it Pearl Street Productions?).
