Angelina Jolie appears at Disney Expo to shill her ‘favorite’ character, Maleficent

Angelina Jolie made an appearance at this weekend’s Disney Expo to do some early promotion for Maleficent, which doesn’t come out for another 11 months! Unfortunately, we don’t have the pics – you can see them here. Angelina looked gorgeous and healthy, and she wore all-black, of course. While she was at the Expo, she talked to the press, of course. And I think her quotes are really funny – she talks about how she kept making children cry whenever she tried to talk to them while wearing her Maleficent horns. Of course, the tabloids will probably twist this into “Brad Pitt LEAVES ANGELINA because she scares children!!”

Maybe it was the horns. Angelina Jolie – who got a standing ovation at Saturday’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, Calif., while presenting a clip from her upcoming film Maleficent – revealed that she didn’t exactly get the same rapturous response when she was in costume as Sleeping Beauty’s nemesis.

“These little kids would visit set, and I would think, ‘Oh, I am a Disney character,’ so I would go over to them, and say, ‘Hi there,’ ” Jolie told the packed crowd. “They would just scream.”

The mom-of-six added, “One little kid even said, ‘Mommy, please make the mean witch stop talking to me.’ ”

One child who didn’t scare so easily? Her daughter and costar Vivienne, who plays the young Sleeping Beauty.

“Vivienne was the only 4-year-old who didn’t scream when she saw me,” said Jolie, who wore a black Versace top and black Saint Laurent pants and shoes at the event.

She also revealed that it was her brother, James Haven, who remembered her childhood fascination with the evil sorceress and persuaded her to get involved with the project.

“Since I was a little girl, Maleficent was always my favorite. I was terrified of her, but I was so drawn to her,” Jolie said. “She had this elegance and grace, and yet she was so cruel. Just wonderfully and deliciously cruel.”

Jolie admitted that one of the highlights of playing Maleficent was donning her signature headpiece.

“She loved wearing those horns,” director Robert Stromberg told PEOPLE. “After awhile it felt very strange to see her without them, like part of her was missing.”

While Jolie’s youngest daughter wasn’t there to promote her film debut (her siblings Pax, 8, and Zahara, 7, also have walk-on roles in the movie), the 38-year-old admitted that her kids weren’t far away.

“They are actually playing in the park now,” she said, referring to the Disneyland theme park across the street. Maleficent will open July 2, 2014.

[From People]

I really don’t think Disney has gotten enough credit for choosing Angelina to play Maleficent. It seems like obvious casting right now, and maybe it was obvious casting at the time, but it really is just a brilliant choice. I can’t think of any other actress who would be this excited about playing Maleficent.

Angie was my first celebrity crush, I will always adore her.

She’s stunning, good hearted, and it’s amazing having seen her transformation and personal growth over the past ten years.

I’m excited about this movie (just wish it wasn’t so far away).

    • Bubbles says:

I’m looking forward to it too, but it still bugs me that her kid got the part because of her. I hate nepotism.

      • Michella says:

Hollywood runs on it. Knowing people gets you parts when you aren’t known, because there’s just far too many people in the talent pool to make talent the only thing that gets noticed. I don’t see how this should be any different.

      • AKA says:

I don’t mind her kids getting the part based on her recommendation. Casting kids is still a shady business with stage parents and all. I’d much rather know for certain that the child in question really wants to do this and that his/her parents will be present at all times to take care of them.

  2. LAK says:

I love Angelina as Malificent. If she hadn’t accepted the role, Charlize Theron, perhaps? Purely on visuals. No one makes a B!tch face like Charlize.

    • Tapioca says:

Well Gisele is the spitting image of Maleficent, but I’m not sure she can act.

I also refuse to believe AJ looked anything other than her usual emaciated at the Expo; beautiful – yes, “healthy” – no.

      • doofus says:

I was thinking the same thing.

Gorgeous in the face, yes…but the limbs look SO pin-thin.

  3. Karen says:

She looked awful…….although i’ll give her a pass because she barely wore any makeup, except very unflattering eyeliner.

It’s nice to hear that she sounds like Eleanor Audley though.

    • Janet says:

She looks lovely, Karen. Go back to your co-haters at FF.

      • maria says:

Angelina is awesome, but I think she looks unhealthy as well. Look at her head! She’s got the bobblehead syndrome! And look her hands! Does this make me a hater?

      • Janet says:

Maria, she’s had veiny hands and arms all her adult life. So what?

    • Spooks says:

Angelina is beautiful and always will be, but HEALTHY?!?! Are you kidding me? She looks skeletal in those pictures. Awful.

I read somewhere that whenever a woman gets with Brad, she starts to loose weight.

      • Cherry says:

I must agree. I love Angelina, but saying that she ‘looked gorgeous and healthy’ on these photos is just… wrong. She doesn’t. She’s way too skinny and her make-up is off.

    • Holt says:

That mouth! It is HUGE! Isn’t there a joke about beer cans or something… She does not look good at all, and has nothing to do with very little make-up. Why black? A little color would be such an asset…

      • Ennie says:

Is it ok to criticies/make fun of any person’s lips or mouth size or just Angelina?
I could just ignore mean comments, but it is like a surething to see how some poeple citicise always the same things that cannot be changed about AJ like her veiny arms, or her mouth, even her slimmness, which is hard to change.

    • Zoid says:

*sigh* while I respect everyone’s right to their own opinion, I do get tired of how much she gets because of her weight. In a Melissa McCarthy post everyone says ‘You aren’t her doctor so she could be healthy and you wouldn’t know!’
Why does it make it okay to say she unhealthy if she’s too thin?

      • Toot says:

        Agree, it’s beyond annoying.

I’m waiting for a Melissa M thread so I can go in and call her lard ass like people seem to love to call Angelina skeletor. Yes, it’s immature, but I hate the double standard.

      • AKA says:

        + 1000

I’ve never seen an article about AJ bending over with exhaustion or admitted to the hospital for fainting spells. She walks with her own two feet, gave birth to 3 children and goes about her job. To me she is healthy no matter what her physique looks like. I watched Girl Interrupted recently and her body looked the *exact* same back then too. Her face has slightly changed because of her age, but that’s it. I don’t get why every post about Angelina Jolie has have comments about her being unhealthy. If you are so concerned sign a petition to feed her.

      • Tapioca says:

        @AKA:

So you’ve never read the National Enquirer then? Their bread and butter is articles about AJ keeling over like a fainting goat, illustrated with photos that make her look like Gollum’s skinnier sister!

      • Holt says:

If you look at these and other photos, that were taken in the past 6+ months and say she is the picture of health…. Then I think a pair of glasses might be in order!

      • Tulip Garden says:

        Zoid,
Completely get where you are coming from as far as the double standard of fat-shaming versus thin-shaming. Neither is kind. I do believe that the so-called “thin-shaming” carries much less animosity and vitriol with it, not to mention assumptions of laziness, sloppiness, etc.
I think the difference between Melissa and Jolie is that people do not hold Melissa up as a sex symbol or “most beautiful” woman in the world. Jolie’s beauty and/or sexiness is often a theme with writers and posters about her. It seems at odds with her appearance. While she may not be unhealthy in any manner, she (nor Melissa) seem to represent an ideal body type. There is nothing wrong with that at all. It is a glaring difference in the way that people view “too fat” versus “too thin”. I believe Jolie has been vocal about feeling sexy and womanly. Good for her. I hope Melissa feels the same way!

      • Narak says:

She is undeniably gorgeous. I can’t wait to see the movie!!!

    • cat1 says:

I don’t think she looks healthy either … doesn’t mean I ‘hate’ her. But she did just go through a lot or not that long ago… she’s not superhuman (I don’t think).

  4. Len says:

I really like her, but sometimes, like when i see her in this interview, she somehow seems too perfect. I feel like the crazy is still there, being covered up.

  5. Eleonor says:

Another actress who could have played Maleficent is Charlize Theron, but she was out of the game for Snowhite, Angie is a great choice, I will totally go to see the movie.

  6. blue marie says:

cute post, I can picture the little kids running away while screaming.

  7. mom2two says:

Based on the tiny bit that I’ve seen of this movie, she is looking like she will rock this part. I do want to see it when it comes out.

  8. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I actually am a little excited about this. I do love Disney movies, and this version seems so cool. Sleeping Beauty wasn’t one of my favorites, so this’ll be an interesting take on the character. Angelina looks FIERCE as Maleficent.

So I didn’t know how/if I should even share/ask you guys this, but I will anyway, because an Angelina post is always appropriate.

I’ve been thinking about keeping a diary to write down all my thoughts and the things I’ve learned about adopting from fostercare. I figured this would be helpful in ten (or more) years when I do want to adopt. What do you guys think? I’ve been looking things up about adopting from fostercare, and it’s proving to be very insightful and sad– for me at least.

I honestly can’t believe that a lot of the kids in foster care can’t be adopted, because their parents haven’t signed their rights away. I would think that unless a parent lost their job i.e. can’t provide for their kids, but they’re trying would have the right to be able to pull themselves back together and get their kids back. But kids are in fostercare for a reason, and I think barring certain circumstances, if you have to remove a kid, the sperm or ovary donor shouldn’t be able to have any form of control over their kids.

I don’t know, maybe I’m just too young and don’t know all the circumstances. But that just seems bizarre to me.

    • lenje says:

That’s very thoughtful. Never been a parent myself, but I helped raise a niece, and it has taught me a lot, among others is that I’m not sure of my own capability of full-time parenting.

If I may suggest, you can start by volunteering as social workers for abandoned children, help with foster parents etc.

    • Janet says:

Virgilia, I have worked in foster care and adoption since before you were born, and foster children are not in care for A reason but for many different reasons. It takes a great deal to convince a judge to terminate someone’s parental rights. And many foster children are successfully reunited with their birth parents.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

What are some reasons? I’ve never heard/read much beyond the typical neglect/abuse/death of parents.

      • Erinn says:

One of our good friends was a foster kid. We’re in our early 20’s now, but he spent a large portion of his childhood and teenaged years in foster care. He still maintains a relationship with his mother, and father, as well as his foster parents.

      • Janet says:

Virgilia, sorry it took so long to get back to you, but I couldn’t do a long response in the office.

Some of the reasons children are placed in foster care are neglect, parents doing drugs, abuse, abandonment, parents overwhelmed, parents incarcerated, mental illness, etc. etc. Whether or not they ultimately get their children back depends on how committed they are to working towards getting them back. In New York, if the children have been in foster care for 15 months and the parents have made no discernible progress in resolving the problems that got the kids taken away from them, the agency is required to go to court to file for a termination of parental rights. The parents have a right to contest this. Sometimes the parents win their case in court; more often, they lose. Once the children are free for adoption then the agency has to look for a adoptive home for them. If the children are older or have developmental or behavioral problems, it can be very difficult. There is a lot involved in fostering or adopting a child, far too much for me to go into here, so I’d suggest you do as much research as you can.

  9. Nibbi says:

it’s painful for me when they start promoting films like this so early. i’d love to see it, but by the time it is out i’ll probably be exhausted from the hype and let it slide. happens so often w me

  10. bowers says:

I agree with you all who say 1. She’s beautiful and 2. She’s not healthy-looking.

    • 38 Years of Unhealthy? says:

When, in 38 years of pictures and videos, was she EVER fat? Ever unhealthy? She never left/lost work or had bad pregnancies. Even at her VERY ADVANCED age of 38, she STILL can carry 2 children through airports like Hercules. Granted, like her bio kids, she was a bit chubby/chubby-cheeked as a baby, but not for long. Even pregnant, she had long gangly arms & legs- it’s called genetics- look at her parents* and her brother. Except for pregnancies, her weight is probably the same as it was when she was 20, if not a few extra pounds for mom belly. You can see the longs limbs in her bio daughters, too.

*her mom started to look bloated at times during the 8 years of cancer treatment, but I suspect that was the impact of drugs.

      • doofus says:

        38 years is “very advanced”?!

        yikes.

I guess that make Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep absolutely ANCIENT.

      • mccora96 says:

I think that was a joke because, from about 1994 on*, the haters and the media have been predicting that “too skinny”, “unhealthy”, “wild” Angelina would be too old & dead by now…she’s still standing- as kind and talented as ever, quite elegantly, IMO.

*let’s face it, I have yet to see a Jolie post since then without some snark about her being “too skinny”- if it’s not in the write up, the comments spew about it. Skinny or not shes a highly paid star- famous for action roles where she demonstrates great strength. Also, she’s birthed 3 very healthy babies.

  11. allons-y alonso says:

I’m 100% with you, Angie! Maleficent is one of those villains that I just loved growing up! I’m really looking forward to this film.

Also, I can’t resist posting this:

    http://cdn.themetapicture.com/media/funny-fairy-Maleficent-cursing-wedding.jpg

  12. Maya says:

Gorgeous woman and very talented. Many people who were at the expo all had wonderful words to say about Angie and the movie. In fact there is a video where two men are all excited and kind of giddy after they saw the clip – in fact they called the acting magnificent. I am going to give Angie a new nickname Magnificent Maleficient 😉

  13. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I’ve always been on the fence as to whether or not Angelina is too skinny i.e. has issues w/food. Because to me, the only that’s really changed is that her face thinned out. And even then, that happened after her mom died. I saw pictures of her at the 2009 Oscars and she looked amazing, as usual. Her face didn’t start to thin until some time after that. And she’s always been a twig.

But I also wonder if it’s somehow linked to her general health, especially with her family history of cancer. Wasn’t her mom around 40ish when she was diagnosed with cancer? I’d think that’d do a number to your body/general health, but I could be wrong.

I think she’s one of those people that needs to work out in order not to look like a toothpick. I go to school with a girl. She is EXTREMELY thin. I’m talking her arms are about 75% the size of Angelina’s, she’s not very tall, but she’s long. Her thighs and calves are pretty much the same size, she doesn’t really have boobs, and her face is long and thin. Same as Angelina, but Angelina has big boobs and full lips and cheekbones.

    • Ennie says:

I have a friend who is now around 47 years old, I am 4 years younger, and I have known her for around…25 years. She had VERY thin arms and legs, long neck and not a lot of a waist. She was the spitting image of her thin father, except for his very blue eyes. Guess what? She is practically the same now, just a tiny bit fuller and boxier. She has almost always worn long flowy skirts, even when it looks out of fashion because she is aware of the looks people give her because she is so thin, well, her limbs,a s she is not tiny in the torso.
She has become a stronger woman over the years, she knows that even when there are poeple who will criticise and bully her, there are people who will get to know her and like her as she is, a very intelligent, nice, gentle person. Many, sadly, men and women are fixated on looks.
I hope this girl you know is not bullied for her looks, some people are built like that.

Also, other topic, many times thin women have big babies. two friends have had to be checked on because those babies inside are sucking nutrients out of them. angelina seemed very healthy during her pregnancies. And then she stabilizes back to her regular weight. Except after her mom died.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

She’s not; she’s one of those girls that EVERYONE likes, that EVERYONE is nice to because she’s nice. And she’s the exact same as your friend, and she also wears really long skirts most of the time.

But yeah, that’s what I don’t get with the people who say Brad Pitt’s starving her or whatever. Her body has a difference of maybe 5-10 pounds, and her face thinned with age. And plus all the stress that she went through w/her surgeries and the coming stress w/getting her ovaries removed….

I think she really needs to take a break for a good six months–just regroup, lay on the couch and eat honey buns all day (which I would love to do), and so on. I’m guessing she will after she gets her ovaries removed, what, later this year, after she finishes directing “Unbroken”.

And I really think that when it’s all said and done, they’re going to adopt from New Orleans. At least I hope they do. I never got to “see” the fanfare w/their births and adoptions. First time I started reading gossip was when she went to Cannes in that nude versace gown–which I only remember because I looked at it on yahoo! and thought it was soooo gorgeous.

  14. Maritza says:

Angelina photographs so much better when she doesn’t have a full wide smile.

  15. lower-case deb says:

wonder why they’re starting the marketing thing so early. do they (Disney) get cold feet, afraid of this one flopping like some other Live Action Disney flicks?

    • Tasha says:

What are you talking about ?

It was an expo and they showed a lot of clip to movies that are coming out next year. Many other celebrities where there to support their movie Natalie Portman being one of them.

      • lower-case deb says:

oh, oops. sorry my bad. it’s a combination of speed reading and mis-rememberinf. i thought Disney Expo is that big round hall-thing in Disneyland. i didn’t realize that it’s an event like a convention but for Disney stuff. i really need to read more carefully in the future.

  16. xboxsucks says:

she will better villain than charlize theron *tantrum* overacting queen in SNOW White.

  17. Jayna says:

Love me some Angie, but she looks drawn, gaunt, except for the first photo. Lifeless hair, thin face in the videos. But she’s been through a lot, so I give her a pass.

    • zut alors! says:

I like her too but I won’t pretend that she’s at her best physically. Her receding hairline and increasingly thinning hair is hard to miss. She is also veering into Nicole Kidman territory with the Botox usage. The Botox combined with her gaunt face makes her look hard.
It’s weird how “plastic” looking she’s gotten over the past couple of years. I never thought she’d be one to succumb to the pressure but I guess she’s just as insecure as the rest of them.

  18. Jade says:

I really miss her in action movies where I think Angie is at her best. Nobody has matched up to her in that genre. Milla Jovovich, Gina C, Michelle R. and Kate Beckinsale are a distant second to me. I wonder if because of her age now, I will no longer see her in them.

    • date night! says:

When doing interviews in Cannes one time (not sure which film), she was asked about aging out of action & she gave a a really cute answer about Harrison Ford still doing great at action movies, so why not her? Of course, that was before she got the directing bug…both she & Brad have been VERY clear about working less and being with the kids- for many years now- and you can see that has taken place.

  19. Toot says:

I’m so tired of these she looks gaunt and unhealthy comments. Angelina has ALWAYS been skinny. Her face was fuller, but even in Mr. & Mrs. Smith her arms and calves were tiny.

    Her body hasn’t changed.

  20. AKA says:

It’s lovely to see her so giddy about a role. I like that she (and Pitt) lately only does movies which excite her. It’s a refreshing change from the rest of Hollywood.

  21. La jolie says:

All these weight comments on her weight issues arghhhh enough already! Yes she is skinny deal with it. You can’t say she is unhealthy wen u are not her doctor! She was healthy enough to have 3 bio kids, healthy enough to under go 8hours surgery yes I know that cos my friend had a mastectomy 7months ago if she wasn’t healthy the doctor wouldn’t have performed the surgery on her! Like some of you said people are just being one sided when its Melissa or Adele they are untouchable with the weight comment! Pls we really do need to stop it. Its not right..
On a different note her appearance was met with a standing ovation wow just wow! she and hopkins I love that people are excited about the movie and can hardly wait! 11months is a long time…
I saw this pics and she looks wonderful I know its not the official poster of maleficent but its just breath taking!!!!

  22. Lila says:

She’s beautiful in pictures but I love watching video of her. She is unbelievably dynamic. I loved it when she walked out on stage. She walked like a queen- like she knew they all loved her and didn’t question it but was also genuinely excited to be there with them and on that stage. I think that quality is both what makes her the ultimate living movie star for me and what keeps me really liking her rather than just being interested.

The voice she used when talking about the kid that told his mom to keep her away was funny. And I loved what she said about Vivienne being in the movie because she was the only 4 year old not afraid of her. That’s hilarious. It’s little moments like that and her ‘of course’ she loved Maleficent that make me think she’s not that different than she used to be. It’s the little sly edge and bluntness to how she says it. She may be cleaned up and more mature, but her personality hasn’t done a total 180 like some claim.

For all the crap she gets about her clothes, she works them. This outfit was boring in still pics but it’s gorgeous in motion. Instead of looking staid like it photographs, it looks cool and classy. And I don’t care how skinny she is, nothing about her seems or looks unhealthy in the videos.

  23. Sandy says:

Always the same thing on every Angelina thread. Conversations about her weight. How entertaining.

    • UsedToBeLulu says:

It’s quite hard to ignore when the photos are as alarming as these.

      • siobhan says:

The comments are pretty much always the same for every celebrity on this site. I already know what the comments are going to say based on the celebrity the article is about.

      • Emmma says:

What is so alarming about these pics???? Would you go into a Melissa Mc. thread and say her weight is alarming????

She looks like she always does. Not on the brink of death.

You sound straight from FF. You are a hater who loves Aniston and hates Angelina based on your posts.

      • UsedToBeLulu says:

@Emmma: Yeah – pretty much the last few years she has always looked like this. And it’s alarming. Look at her neck. I’m not the only poster here who notes this.

    • cat1 says:

When I agreed with a comment that she looked unhealthy, I was not referring to her her weight. She just doesn’t look healthy/well. But she has been through a lot so… there is that.

    • Anna Scott says:

You’re right! It is as entertaining as talking about Paltrow’s being snotty, Aniston’s lack of talent or Roberts’ being a b&tch. After all it’s Celebitchy, right?

  24. Emmma says:

The fake concern about her health is annoying.

She has had thin limbs all her life.

    2004-
    http://team-jolie.com/gallery/displayimage-4016.html&fullsize=1

-Look how skinny her calves are!

  25. Mean Hannah says:

She is very thin – and like most people, her weight fluctuates a bit. When it swings towards her lower weight, she can look “painfully” thin. The square jaw and big eyes and lips can exaggerate her face and amplify that “bobble head” look. But saying she looks unhealthy is ridiculous, especially if you watched the two videos. People come in all shapes, sizes, and body types. You simply cannot tell someone’s health from photos. Ditto for guessing someone’s weight and size from photos.

i’m a fan of class & elegance, but sometimes one can sound a lil ‘puttin on airs’ as they say. 😕

    • g says:

Sounds like someone (you) is a little too obsessed, right down to the second! What a strange thing to nit pick.

  27. Janet says:

Dang, she’s getting crow’s feet around her eyes and she’s still drop-dead beautiful. It’s not fair.

  28. Mandy says:

I need to know this woman’s skin regimen!

  29. iheartjacksparrow says:

I was in the audience and she was beautiful in person. And they showed some extended clips from the film, which looks amazing. And we all got cardboard Maleficent “hair horns” on our way out to wear (promoting the line of Jakks Pacific dolls that will be released).

  30. odo says:

so funny, witty and delicious speech 🙂
    love her! XD

  31. Iggie says:

She looks beautiful as always. You go Angie!

  32. nani says:

I simply love and worship Angelina. She is the best, no doubt.
