Adam Levine & Lady Gaga bitchfight on Twitter, Gaga calls him ‘the art police’

Adam Levine

Lady Gaga’s not having the greatest month. First Miley Cyrus grabbed all the VMA attention. Then everyone basically kept talking about Miley and ignored Gaga’s amazing art. Next Elton John was mean to her, and now the pile-on continues. Adam Levine took to Twitter with some not-so-subtle tweets that not-so-cryptically referred to Gaga’s ART. In short, Levine isn’t impressed with all of Gaga’s posturing. He thinks she’s too busy performing for herself and doesn’t take her audience’s desires into consideration. At least that’s what I gather from his remarks.

I can’t imagine Gaga even follows Levine, so the info probably came from one of her little monsters. You know this criticism must get under Gaga’s skin at least a little. Her art is untouchable, people. You’re not supposed to question it. Just love it. Fawn over her. Even though “Applause” is completely underwhelming as a song, right?

Levine may be a douche in general, but at least he recognizes the value in making pop music. He knows he’s making disposable tunes and accepts that for what it is. Plus, it makes him money and gets him laid. Win win.

    *snickers* The art police.

Two more pompous windbags I have yet to see duking it out on twitter. It’s a douchenozzle mindmeld.

  2. blue marie says:

he’s completely right about her, she’s ridiculous. at least he knows he’s making crap.

    • Annie says:

Hahaha! I really doubt he thinks he makes crap. He’s very obnoxious about his own stuff too.

      • pamspam says:

How can he not know his stuff is crap? I mean, “Moves Like Jagger?” Talk about an anthem of mediocrity. Ick.

        He’s not wrong though!

    • Kim says:

He does say pop music so maybe he does realize he is a cheesy pop musician, who if he wasnt handsome, would never be famous for his music because it sucks.

  3. Mata says:

Never thought I’d agree with Adam Levine on anything, but Yup! He nailed it.

    • V4Real says:

I swear they should start a reality show called Celebrity Feud where they hatch it out on TV.

I do like some of Maroon 5’s music but the latest releases have been crap and sounds the same. Songs about Jane was a great CD and the single Moves Like Jagger was catchy. But right now it’s like the pot calling the kettle black. Neither one of these artist have the appeal they used to have. Gaga is full of herself and she comes off less genuine from her earlier days and her latest releases are garbage as well. But like you said at least Levine knows his stuff is crap.

      • Eleonor says:

Once upon a time there was Celebrity Death Match!

      • diva says:

@v4real Songs About Jane was a great album compared to their newer songs. They are very hit and miss now a days. I agree with him though. Lady Gaga is not as creative as she thinks she is

    • TherapyCranes says:

Agreed. I don’t like him but wow he said it perfectly.

  4. T.fanty says:

I would love to be the art police. I would lock Gaga up and throw away the key in the name of *actual* art.

I’ll bet the uniform would be cool, too.

    • Sixer says:

Infamy! Infamy! They’ve all got it infor… oh. Never mind.

Surely you are aware this is HERESY?

      • T.fanty says:

The woman is demented. If it makes her go away, I’ll put on my High Priestess of Pollack robes and do an exorcism, reading from The Shock of the New (or the more recent one on which Hughes slagged off contemporary art).

What really grates my cheese is that she made me like Adam Levine for a moment.

      • Sixer says:

I wonder if she gets more coverage stateside (well, much more)? The only time she ever crosses my path is when there is a post on here about her. I’m still at the stage of snorting and mocking – not to tooth-grinding or fighting down violent impulses yet.

      • T.fanty says:

Not any more. She’s definitely peaked here – thank goodness. For a while she was ubiquitous. She just makes me ragey because she is lazy and derivative and encourages a whole gang of people to pass meaninglessness off as interpretation. I live in NY – we have enough bad art here as it is. I don’t need her encouraging more.

      • Sixer says:

The thing is, in an internet age, it isn’t interesting in any way at all, is it? It’s just another angle at massmarketing.

      • T.fanty says:

Yes. Plus, the Internet facilitates people coming together to celebrate their own niche interests, which effectively expands the mainstream to the point of all-inclusiveness which makes counter-culturalism a practical impossibility. You can only be subversive if there is a hegemony to subvert.

      • Sixer says:

        Exactly.

    • Eleonor says:

Once upon a time there was Celebrity Death Match !

    • bob says:

I bet Portlandia or Nathan Barley have already done this.

  5. Birdie says:

The one thing about Lady Gaga that amazes me is, that she wants to be all grotesque/artsy/deep/mysterious etc., but her music is so superficial. She takes the dumbest lyrics and a repetetive melody, makes an ART video, but it falls flat because of the stupid popsong.

  6. Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

Seems like all Gaga and her stans do these days is feud on twitter.

    • Dommy Dearest says:

If you have to defend yourself to what another said, it’s probably true. That’s my take on Gaga’s reaction.

  7. teehee says:

She takes herself so seriously. She’s not accomplishing anything, not to the degree ‘actual artists’ do- the ones whose names are not known, whose works both originate from and influence the environment in which they are born; whose music never makes it to the airwaves because of pop singers like her; whose works are ahead of their time and stemming from sheer joy rather than an over-inflated perception of importance and influence [and art is not just music but many media]…. I’d like her to explain this whole concept of “art” that she talks so endlessly about, and that apparently so many people need schooling on….

  8. NerdMomma says:

“It makes you an art teacher.”

    Bahahaha! Best shade ever.

  9. neelyo says:

Her entire defense to any criticism amounts to ‘you don’t get it’. She will implode because she can’t take any criticism and doesn’t seem to learn or grow, just change costumes.

    • Hakura says:

@Neelyo – You just nailed one of he biggest problems w/all popstars, in general. With a few exceptions, most don’t ‘reinvent’ themselves, just ‘change costume’. It’s what separates those who manage to have some longevity in their careers from the flash-in-the-pan alternatives.

  10. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I can’t stand LG, i mean she seriously gets on my nerves, and agree with what he said, but don’t understand the need to say it on Twitter. I thought her response was fairly low key. Oh no, don’t tell me I’m on her side? Nooooooooo…….

    • Hakura says:

The reason to do it on Twitter is purely something to do when you get bored, to be bitchy, get on someone’s nerves, & maybe even stir up a micro-controversy to draw some attention to yourself (or even just your name). No matter which reason why, it’s totally idiotic.

  11. Londongal says:

As said by Dear, wee Daniel Radcliffe, anyone who refers themselves as an ‘artist’ unless they happen to be near a canvas/easel/painbrush/pen etc is a TWAT. The End.

  12. Jayna says:

I just am so tired of the word “art” thrown around these days by pop singers, but especially Gaga overuses it. Think about it. Do great rock bands/pop bands carry on about their art when they discuss their music. They just try to write good songs and let them speak for themselves. Gaga is art, art, art, ad nauseum. Applause is just a catchy pop song, not even a great pop song. Please don’t try to elevate it with all the artiste stuff surrounding it by you.

  13. Julianna says:

I don’t understand why she even responded bc he didn’t even name her. Isn’t she kind of dissing herself by assuming he was talking about her? When people complain about recycling old art, are they automatically talking about Lady Gaga? Sucks for her.

  14. tara the original says:

my husband makes documentaries and his uber hipster douche side comes out (i love him but its the truth) when anyone critiques his work or he critiques someone elses work that doesn’t meet his standards. its a hipster thing. adam levine is lucky he’s hot because his music is forgettable and his whiny voice is irritating. at least gaga’s music gets me through a workout.

    • Jayna says:

      LOL about your husband.

But Adam doesn’t call his music art. He just tries to write good songs. Gaga elevates hers to art. LOL Pop singers like Gaga and Katy and Rihanna used to be looked down upon by the Grammys. Now, they are all nominated for best album, etc., every year. I love pop, even disposable pop, just as much as anybody, but it’s just great club music for the most part.

  15. Mirna says:

When Gaga first came out, I think I was one of the few who gave her a side-eye. First, having grown up in the 80’s, I wasn’t impressed with her music (it was eighties music mascarading as something “innovative”). Second, I wondered what she would do for her “second act.” Once you’ve worn meat and gotten doused in blood for a performance, what else can you do to shock people? Not to mention that she tried to be “original” by living in character, not realizing that that is unsustainable long term. That is why everyone else only puts on the personal when they are performing.

    • littlestar says:

That is my biggest annoyance with Gaga – that she thinks she constantly has to be in “character” ALL THE FRIGGIN’ TIME! Why can’t she wear her stupid costumes when she’s performing only? It’s gotten so old and boring. Whenever I see pictures of her, all I think is how exhausting it must be to be her, constantly in character, constantly wearing some lame getup. I don’t even think about her “art”, I just think “Give it a rest already, Gaga.”

Man, I would just love to see her wearing some normal street clothes for once.

      • Hakura says:

@Littlestar – (*Adores your icon, as always x3*)

I agree, about being in character ALL THE TIME. And I think it may be what’s gotten her in trouble, regarding her ex-best friend/personal assistant that’s suing her, currently. According to the assistant, & even Gaga to some extent, she lived the role, calling herself ‘Queen of the Universe’ (no, I’m not kidding or exaggerating). The ex-friend claims she made her do things like even sleep w/her everywhere (bc she didn’t like sleeping alone), & mentioned being called bc ‘she couldn’t get her toilet in the hotel room to flush’, & wanted her to come from across town to flush it for her.

I think living the part for so long may have further loosened some already loose screws.

  16. janie says:

When your a flash in the pan, what does she expect? There has never been any substance to her music, she’s not the tortured soul she thinks she is. Love Adam.. he realizes it’s not brain surgery!

  17. Buff Mark says:

Actually I think Gaga won this round. Adam Levine should just shut up and look pretty.

  18. Ellie66 says:

She looks like Joey Ramone with mouse ears on. 🙁 (damn is nothing sacred?)

  19. Kat says:

Was Adam actually talking about Gaga or did she just assume he was? Doesn’t it seem like something she would do because EVERYTHING is about her?

  20. drea says:

That we can label the regurgitated mishmash Gaga puts out as “art” is funny to me. Oh, well… Remember when she was fun? When her music was just catchy tunes you could dance to without all her increasingly pretentious crap? If she’d been able to keep her music catchy and fresh, I think I’d be able to ignore her delusions, but her new material is stale and she is now fully insufferable. Good luck to her little monsters offering blowjobs for buying her single, they’ll need it.

  21. katie says:

levine is a douche. i am not saying i am a fan of gaga but levine is irrelevant especially here in the uk. why is it what she is doing bothering him, there is room for everyone, he is just bitching.

  22. Hubbahun says:

Shade from the blandest, most talent-free douchewad on the planet. Not that I think Gaga is original (at least not since The Fame) – having *cough cough* homaged everyone from Madge to Lene Lovich but really, Adam? You wrote and performed ‘Moves like Jagger’. I rest my case.

  23. Sephora Wilson says:

Meh this is not the 1st time AL has said something about LG and it won’t be the last. I remember his tweet from 2 years ago when he said basically Gaga took “vogue” & “express yourself”, put it in the blender & got born this way. While I’m not really a fan of neither, I do have to give him cool points for not deleting his tweets like a lot of celebs do. Also I notice over the past 3 years Gaga has been getting called out by a lot of celebs. The Madonna shade was epic.
I used to be a really big fan of Gaga when she 1st came out. She was weird but she wasn’t soooo over the top like she is now. I think her “shock value” for a lot of people has died.

  24. Adrien says:

Well both of them recycled stuff from ACE of Base (One More Night sounds like All that She Wants and Alejandro sounds like Don’t Turn Around). But I’m Team Lady Gaga here. I admit that I’m not impressed with her latest effort but at least she’s taking chances. She’s not afraid to alienate fans. REcycling art? WTF?Maroon 5 is sticking to the same formula. All their songs sound the same. There is such thing as distinct or trademark band sound but Maroon 5 albums didn’t evolve since Songs About Jane.

    • Elle Kaye says:

But that is Levine’s point. She ISN’T taking any chances at all. She is putting out sounds that have already been done, and acting like it is high art, and individual to HER. This isn’t anything new, but most artists will admit that they are influenced by those who came before. Gaga will only admit to it if held to the fire, even when her songs sound so much like Madonna it sounds like a re-mix.

  25. lbeees says:

Hmm… not really seeing how these tweets are directed at one person or the other. He doesn’t call her out by name & she doesn’t reply to his tweet.

That being said, whatever. Gaga is a hundred times more talented than Levine.

  26. some bitch says:

For somebody who goes on and on about how secure she is now and how her music is about “aaaahrt” Gaga displays very little confidence (or even deep-rooted knowledge in art history) in her work. She knows the jig is up and people are cluing in to what a phony she is.

Personally, I couldn’t be happier she’s on her way out. After she referred to her former assistant as a “hood rat” I’ve had nothing but disgust for the hypocrite.

  27. Aud says:

The only person who thinks that Lady Gaga is really innovative and arty is….
    Lady Gaga.

  28. Carrie says:

I think Gaga and Adam are both very talented, but they are just POP. Her last album, wasn’t that great and his wasn’t either( I won’t say Maroon 5 because how many people actually know their names, what recognition do they receive, they may as well be named Adam Levine only). His last album was blah and the one before that. Songs about Jane was amazing, after that they went downhill. All their songs are extremely gay now. I loved r&b/pop Maroon 5. Same for Gaga, what happened to the fun Gaga. It seems like she is trying now, ,maybe just a little. I can’t judge Artpop fully, until I’ve heard the whole thing. But, IMO they both need to step up their game. P.S. we all know Moves Like Jagger wouldn’t have been a hit without the song title and Christina. Sorry for the long rant.

    • TWINK says:

      The songs are gay?

    • Hakura says:

…”All their songs are extremely gay now“? ‘Gay’ like, as an insult? Not cool… But I know a lot of people use it that way, but really don’t mean anything by it. My younger brother used to use it that way, but he’s working on gettin out of the habit.

  29. lisa says:

i think he’s right about her. i also think her stuff is a lot better than his. so this whole thing is sort of funny/confusing/eye rolley

  30. LaurieH says:

I took Adam’s comment to mean that Lady Gaga is just copying artists of the past and passing it off as original to a younger generation that doesn’t know any better – which is exactly what she’s doing.

  31. Denise says:

Oh god, if I’m siding with Adam Levine then my disdain for Caca must really be potent.

  32. Kit says:

Im an art teacher. Don’t insult me please!! We are a hell of a lot more creative and work a whole lot harder than those windbags….

  33. Deanne says:

Never thought I’d like anything Adam Levine said but Lady Gaga rakes herself more seriously than anyone else on the planet.
