Julianne Hough went to this year’s Emmys with her brother, which is a good strategy for a single woman formerly known as “the girlfriend of” a media mogul. (That’s Ryan Seacrest of course, even though he seems young for the mogul title.) She wore this gray-ish Jenny Packham see-through gown which looks like a slip worn over granny panties. Something nice: the off the shoulder top is very cute and would go well with a standard loose skirt that left her undergarments to the imagination. I like the subtle sequins on the fabric. As it is, there’s some kind of diagonal cutout at the waist, her legs are fully visible and it looks like she’s wearing a bathing suit with a coverup. Her face here says it all.
Hough’s makeup is great though and I really like the risk she took with her hair.
Let’s move on to some of the American Horror Story ladies. This seems just as good a place as any to put them although they’re > Julianne Hough, especially Jessica Lange. Lange worked a black floor length Escada gown with feather-like sequin detail on the bodice. This is a killer dress, I absolutely love it. Lange was nominated for outstanding lead actress in a miniseries or a movie, which went to Laura Linney for The Big C. (Lange already won an Emmy last year for AHS in the supporting actress category.)
Lange’s costar and friend Sarah Paulson was nominated for outstanding supporting actress, which ultimately went to Ellen Burstyn for Political Animals. Paulson ruled the red carpet in deep v-neck red Carolina Herrera. The bow around the waist might be goofy if it had a pattern or were a different color from the dress, but somehow it works.
Kate Mara wasn’t on AHS apart from the first season, but I’m sticking her here anyway. Mara is in House of Cards and was there to support that show. She was in white lattice stripe J. Mendel with a high slit. I don’t like her plain pin straight hair behind her ears, and I don’t like this dress. It’s very 70s crochet. At least Kate is smiling a little and looks to have a sense of humor about her fashion, unlike her sister.
As usual, Julianne tries too hard.
^ This.
Yeah, she always wear too obvious “look at me”-gowns considering her C-list status.
Don’t like the dress, the shoulder thing doesn’t work with the sheer fabric.
Wrong color. Doesn’t compliment her hair or skin tone.
Agree 100%
Ditto.
Oh, what the shit, J?!
Ugh she’s such a joke. Stick to dancing, honey.
(Honestly the worst part of the look is her HAIR. WTH is that shape?)
I think she is a beautiful girl and talented actress and dancer. Julianne Hough usually gets it right except tonight. Hair and dress…not good. Makeup…great.
Jessica Lange — it looked too spiderwebby on top at first, but on second thought I’m starting to like it. She looks good in it.
Not crazy about the style of Paulson’s dress but love the bright red,
Julianne Hough — HELL TO THE NO!!!
Lange’s dress looks fine in a closeup but from a distance it seems she has hairy arms.
Lange looks great I think.
I never really noticed just how closely Kate Mara resembles Isla Fisher. It’s uncanny.
Totally- like the grumpier goth version
Julianne looks ridiculous. I liked Jessica and Sarah’s, and liked Late’s on her but not in general.
Since I saw that JennyP dress on the runway, I had been dreaming about seeing it on KMiddleton, lined of course.
ALAS.
The red/pink on Sarah Paulson is fantastic. I thought it was vintage Valentino.
What was Julianne doing there, anyway?
Is it just me, or is Julianne weird looking? I don’t know what it is–something about her face is weird, but kind of bland. And God, with VERY few exceptions I hate see through with granny panties/cutouts.
I think if Sarah’s dress hadn’t been so low cut–she looks kind of awkward in it–maybe she’s nervous, because her posing is so stiff.
I like Kate’s skirt, not the top. And her haircut!
I like her dress, just not for the Emmys. But her acting is servicable, nothing more. I saw that movie with Fergie’s husband. She was okay, but I kept thinking the movie could have been so much better for the type it was with someone with better acting skills and more dynamic on screen.
She was SO BAD in Rock of Ages. She baby-talked the whole time. Ugh.
I LOVE Julianne Hough’s dress, would like yo see it on someone less C list than her!
Her dress is perfect…for Dancing with the Stars. This girl shouldn’t make movies…they all BOMB.
Julianne is so desperate, it’s sad. I remember her as the cute 18-year-old DWTS dancer, and she was so sweet and likeable then.
Me, too. I remember seeing her on DWTS and just felt so happy to look at her – her personality really came through. Now she looks like someone who has seen too much.
Well put, @Mirna. That’s exactly what she looks like. I almost feel as if she’d be happier giving up on this Hollywood career, which clearly isn’t going to amount to much, and pursue something dancing-related.
This^
Hough doesn’t need to try so hard, she’s so pretty already. I do like the color on her.
Dislike all four dresses!
I don’t care if fashion IS cyclical, granny panties are fugly.
Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson really pissed me off when they wouldn’t even stand to congratulate James Cromwell. Stay pressed, bitter b*tches. Jesus.
?
Please spill for those of us who missed this juiciness.
Lange is gorgeous!!!!
Not really. Her face is pulled so tight! I wished she let herself age. That is one very horrible plastic surgery gone wrong!
She has a great head of hair – even on the show. I wonder if there’s any chance it’s all hers.
Julianne Hough- You were at the Emmy’s, not at “Dancing with the stars”.
I love the casual elegance of Kate Mara’s two-piece. I think she looks modern and fresh.
I agree! I also LOVE her shoes. I want to see more pictures of them!
It would have been beautiful if the gown had been fully lined. The bathing suit or whatever is underneath looks ridiculous. The off the shoulder doesn’t fit right around the breast, and looks ready to slide down. Julianne is such a beautiful woman and could have knocked it out of the park, but this is just a mess.
Lange is looking rather “toxed”. Yikes!
Julianne is obnoxious and social-climby to no end, but again, those are not granny panties. They are an integral part of the dress itself. I actually love the look. It’s different.
I missed the emmys this year (have a 3.5 mo old & had a chance to sleep – took it!)… why did Lange & Paulsen stand for Cromwell? also, wasn’t he on AmHo? I have been so out of the loop on things!!!
oh, but I do love Julianne’s dress… & I like her. just really do!
Is it me or has Sarah Paulson lost quite a bit of weight?
Kate Mara reminds me of Robin Lively.
julianne hough has been trying to rid herself of the cute blonde girl next door image for a long time, and it’s just not working. don’t try to be avante garde, just try to look GOOD for once.
NOOOO, definitely NO…I don’t think Julianne should have risked a see-through panty dress. The spidery look on Lange’s dress turns me off–too much going on or something, but I can just say eeewww. I’m LOVIN’ Kate Mara’s hairstyle… perfect!
