Kristen Stewart is candid about Twilight “machine”

When most blockbuster movie stars are asked about their films, they often go one of two routes: they go on about how great everything is without being really honest; or they would rather be identified as indie stars and get irritated when reporters pester them with questions about their more famous franchises. Kristen Stewart, the star of Twilight, is not one of those actresses. In an interview with MTV at Sundance, Kristen is very honest and candid about the good and the bad of the Twilight “machine.” She addresses questions raised about the new director, the first film’s instant success, and Taylor Lautner’s new buff body.

I’m really excited,” she beamed, happily offering some of her first public comments about the big-budget “Twilight” sequel since a number of controversies have simmered, boiled and then been resolved over the past few weeks.

Regardless of her excitement, however, the always-frank Stewart admitted that the film’s fast turnaround, higher visibility and directorial change still needs to serve as a caution to the “Twilight” crew. “It’s such a machine now. All of a sudden, this movie has become [something bigger],” she explained. “With all the expectations — usually, you make a movie and think, ‘If it touches people, great; if it doesn’t, then you move on to the next one, and no one’s personally affected by it.’ [But] everyone’s really sensitive with any changes right now.

“Everyone needs to be on the same page to make the same movie [as the original ‘Twilight’ was],” she said of the upcoming “New Moon” shoot. “Or else it will be a very disoriented project.”

One of the most dangerous changes in the eyes of many fans has been the swapping of directors, from Catherine Hardwicke to “The Golden Compass” director Chris Weitz. Stewart, however, is one of the few actors from the film who has actually met with Weitz, and she told us that her fears have been put to rest.

“Chris is — on top of him being a really sweet guy — he is entirely devoted,” she explained. “And he’s very clearly not doing the movie just because it’s the next big thing. He really likes it a lot.”

Another concern in Stewart’s mind over the past few weeks had been which actor will play the pivotal role of Jacob Black — and whether she and this mystery man would be able to establish the same sort of chemistry that she had with Robert Pattinson in “Twilight.” Now that Taylor Lautner has been re-cast in the role, however, she’s convinced that they can make it work.

“Yeah, absolutely,” Stewart said. “I’m so glad they didn’t have to find somebody else; we already had him! I didn’t understand all the deliberation on [whether to bring him back]. But now that it’s set, we can all rest.

“He’s really buff!” she exclaimed of Lautner, who’s packed on nearly 30 pounds of muscle so far to prepare for Jacob’s werewolf growth spurt. “He definitely is. It took him a lot of time.”

Kristen strikes me as one of the most down-to-earth actresses in Hollywood. That phrase is thrown around a lot, but it really seems as if fame hasn’t gone to her head. A lot of Twilight fans were at first thrown off by her seeming apathy to the role in interviews, but she really did have to take back seat to her costar Robert Pattinson. She has also said that she didn’t know that Twilight would be as big of a hit as it became, and that amount of attention gets some getting used to.

It must be at least a little bit irritating for Kristen to be trying to promote her indie flick Adventureland at Sundance and have reporters asking her questions about Twilight, but she handles the situation with a lot of grace. She recognizes that Twilight is what has propelled her into the limelight, and she sounds honestly grateful. It also seems in the interview as if she, Taylor Lautner, and Robert Pattinson are all good friends, and have kept their heads on in spite of all the press – refreshing for young Hollywood.

She’s like cheese. And not some fancy, expensive cheese, but the orange square kind in shrink wrap. She’s completely perplexing in her blandness, because I can’t figure out how it led to success.
She’s the female version of Josh Duhamel.

I’m sorry to disagree but something about her really rubs me the wrong way. Sure, it could be that she’s level-headed and taking this instant fame with a grain of salt, blah blah blah, but she actually comes across as being pretentious and so above it all. You can be an actor without becoming a celebrity but you still should show some kind of gratitude that this “machine” is what will be getting you cast in new roles whether you like it or not.

the hell is wrong w/ robert pattinson in this photo? he comes across as… off.

I think she’s great. Her and Rob, both. I’ve watched a lot of interviews with the both of them… and they are both totally “normal” people… who seem to not be letting all this go to their heads… which is totally awesome, in my opinion. One thing so many people seem to forget is that actors are just people, too. It’s hard to not get star struck, sure. But, ultimately, Rob and Kristen seem to just want to be normal people who have a really public career. 🙂

  5. Ash says:

She still barely shows emotion in her films in my opinion. Seems cool though. I hope she stays on that path.

  6. Obvious says:

I’m on the fence about her. On one hand I think she’s a good actress (in some movies) on the other hand she can be horrible and I don’t like the way she generally comes across in interviews. But there is something about me that really wants t like her.

    Can someone help?

  7. Barb says:

I love her. I was dragged to the movie (Twilight) by my pre-teen daughter, and she was the thing that saved it. Just loved her performance, and I’ve been nothing but impressed with the way she has handled the sudden celebrity.

  8. Zoe says:

I haven’t seen any interviews with her, but she sounds excited enough here. I think she’s trying for the ultra-cool-headed look in her photos, so she comes off as stuck up.

I know Dante isn’t a fan, but I’ve seen interviews of Rob P. and I have to say, he was really funny, seems like a very nice guy. Totally not your typical annoyingly handsome actor. He just seems to have a sense of humor about how weird it all is. Very sweet.

  9. Tiffany H. says:

Zoe, you’re exactly right. He is hilarious! And seems totally shocked and confused by all the fame… especially the women and girls yelling “Bite me” and “I love you Rob.” I think that proves that he sees himself as a normal person… unsure of why it suddenly changed or should change. Same with her… but I think people are reading her wrong in interviews. I don’t see stuck up… I see a very shy and nervous girl who’s been thrown into this sudden fame… and still isn’t sure how to handle it. I think they are both doing very well with it, honestly… and remaining true to themselves as people who just happen to be actors.

  10. Robi says:

I think she is just tired of the nutso girls screeching at her costar. She seems totally down to earth .

  11. jennifurrr says:

watch her on letterman on youtube… totally weird and awkward.

  12. morgs says:

They are both big time burners. That’s why they sometimes look “off” in photos. It cracks me up. They always look like they’re having a good time because they are somewhat removed from the mayhem.

  13. aleach says:

i really liked her in “into the wild” even though she had just a small part. i thought she would have stayed in films like that…feels like she kinda “sold out” for twilight. its so cheesy! oh well, i guess money is money!

  14. NotBlonde says:

morgs is right. Anyone who knows a pothead knows one when they see one and both of them are potheads, pure and simple. They don’t really care what’s going on with it because they are off in their own brains enjoying their high.

  15. Aspen says:

The way she comes off in interviews, in my opinion, is like a girl who REALLY wants to say the right thing, react the right way, and make all the right gestures…without looking stupid or embarrassing herself.

She’s YOUNG. It’s the awkwardness of youth, I think, rather than pretension or inflated self-worth.

  16. Tiffany H. says:

    I agree with you Aspen.

  17. kathy says:

yeah, I think she`s doing good despite being a bit oh-i`m-not-into-praising-but-who-cares. But in films she is netherless convincing as non-cheesy (not easy in twilight).
