Katia Elizarova (Cumby’s Russian) has some thoughts about the modeling industry

wenn20695715

As we learned a few weeks ago, when Katia Elizarova speaks, we all win. Katia Elizarova is a Russian model, muse and now reality star (in England) who perhaps possibly/probably banged Benedict Cumberbatch. It was through Cumberbatch that Katia came to my attention – he was quoted as saying that she’s a nice girl or something and that he would love to learn Russian (wink, nudge) and then he brought her to Ibiza and she put his hand on his thigh and they kissed. So, she was already on the Cumberbitch Sh-t List, is what I’m saying. But the fact that Katia’s interviews are sort of crazy… well, that’s just the icing on the cake. Anyway, Katia has a new interview. She’s talking about the modeling industry and how messed up it is:

The fashion world is widely known to be ridden with controversy, from, and most recently, a lack of diversity, to underage or unpaid workers and the timeless discussion about models being too thin — recently a former Vogue editor claimed that models eat tissues to stay thin. But the latest in sartorial scandals unfolded last week when a top model disclosed harrowing details about the industry, revealing, in a British newspaper exposé, that models sometimes pull out their teeth to look thinner.

Model Katia Elizarova, who was linked to “Star Trek” actor Benedict Cumberbatch, told The Sunday Times that she along with other models overseas were weighed each day after eating lunch. And though many of the models were pin-thin already, some resorted to doing drugs and pulling out their teeth to make their faces appear more slender.

“When I was in Japan they weighed me every day after lunch, so I felt horrible,” she told The Sunday Times. “But I did know girls who were bulimic, who used cocaine to make their cheeks hollow. Some girls pulled out their teeth to look thinner.”

Elizarova, 27, also said that modeling agencies often do not pay their models and encouraged the models to go out with older men.

“There are people who try to bring you into clubs to attract the attention of older men,” she said. “This is not a nice part of our job. If you’re a model and your agency hasn’t paid you in months, you don’t have anything to eat — and then someone comes over and says, ‘We’re doing free dinners in the club, come and bring your girlfriends,’ of course you go.”

She said that the girls often engage in this occupational risk because they are left with few options. “Then you have 20 men perving at you, but you’re so hungry you don’t care,” she said.

Elizarova, who has worked for the likes of Chanel and MaxStudio, was discovered in her hometown of Saratov in Russia at just 14 years old. Since working in the modeling industry for 12 years, she has moved on to acting, currently starring in a Fox reality show called “Meet the Russians.” The Daily Mail reported that Elizarova is now working to help models who are exploited in the industry, most recently participating in a debate at Oxford Union in the U.K. about being a size 0.

[From IB Times]

“There are people who try to bring you into clubs to attract the attention of older men… If you’re a model and your agency hasn’t paid you in months, you don’t have anything to …Then you have 20 men perving at you, but you’re so hungry you don’t care.” That’s not modeling, that’s being an escort. I’m not shading Katia, I’m just pointing out that it’s incredibly unfortunate and wrong that there are so many faux “modeling agencies” that are really just barely-glorified escort agencies. A real modeling agency will PAY you to work as a model. An escort agency will hire you to look pretty at a party and expect the men to pay you. But, considering Eliza’s thoughts on being a “fragile little thing,” perhaps this lifestyle as a model/escort skewed her ideas about gender relations.

As for the pulling teeth thing… gross.

Like being invited to the Oxford Union is “helping others” or “raising awareness” or “advocating”. They love their sex debates there. I shan’t even think about why. They had Ron Jeremy once, FFS.

  2. Ncboudicca says:

That must be the same “modeling agency” that Dina signed Ali Lohan up for.

  3. allons-y alonso says:

    *facepalm*

  4. Beth says:

    Ugh. My Benedict hit that?

    • Harriet says:

      No, he didnt.

      • Eve says:

How can you possibly be so sure he never inserted his CumbyDick into her PussyRova?

You talk as if you held the ultimate truth regarding all things Cumberbatch. Well, you don’t.

P.S.: By the way, you sound an awful lot like Noreen/Maureen (or both, as I think they’ve always been the same person).

      • Eve says:

        @ Harriet:

No, I’m not on her payroll. And, please, this type of remark is so f*cking old.

I’m not defending her — far from that. What I clearly said is that you couldn’t possibly know he didn’t — unless, of course, you’re Mr. Cumberbatch himself (and I’d still bet you could be lying about it).

I’ve NEVER EVER said he hit it for sure — I always said I thought he probably/likely/possibly had a quick hookup with her. And that he probably regreted that since she seemed to be a famewhore and was trying to milk the fact they had been seen together for her own benefit (to promote her play/get headlines and interviews).

UNLIKE you, I don’t state my opinions as facts (like you just did above, on your reply to Beth, and on the one to Kiddo downthread).

I apologize if you’re not one of the most annoying posters that have ever showed up on CB, but your humourless, now-it-all replies to most people resembles Noreen’s/Maureen’s M.O. quite a lot, if you ask me.

P.S.: As for Ivan Massow, I hope the people who said they’re not friends were right. But I never said it was a reason to hate Benedict Cumberbatch — I said, clearly, it was a reason for not having a crush on the man anymore (I kept saying I still loved him as an actor). So, if you’re going to stalk my comments on CB, do at least a proper job.

      • T.Fanty says:

Please let me live in a universe where I NEVER EVER have to see the words “inserted his CumbyDick into her PussyRova” again.

      • Eve says:

        @ T.Fanty:

        And here I was…thinking I had been subtle :D.

        My bad.

  5. Ari says:

Actually if you watch the movie Girl Model you can see some things like this – she is not completely off base. I think American agencies are usually more “legit” even in Japan they sometimes will not pay you although they house you with others and send you on jobs.

    • karen says:

I believe her. Agencies don’t make much money…10 to 20% of a job. And few get multimillion dollar contracts.

I believe ELITE was notorious for not paying models. And housing them in small, cheap hotels.

It is NOT America’s Next Top Model, folks.

These girls starve!! Keep your kids out of the industry.

      • Kiddo says:

        +1 to both comments.

      • KCO says:

Agencies actually make 40% to your take home of 80%. They take 20% from your earnings, and charge the client 20% to book you. This is the standard. Sometimes, a client will pay a flat rate to book you, and then the agency takes their 20% from that flat rate, and then another 20% from that already reduced rate. Your take home is around 66% ish.

    • ag-UK says:

That business is not for the faint hearted it takes no prisoners. If you haven’t “made” it within in a year you’d better try something else. But these young girls get told you should be a model as they are tall / skinny etc but they are a dime a dozen and so many flying to NY (see them all with their black books) looking about 14 years old. The percentage that makes it is quite low. It’s luck and being in the right place and the right time.

  6. Lucrezia says:

I had a bet with myself whether there’d be a Cumby pic in this post. I’m disappointed.

But on topic. Would you really call “we’ll pay you (and/or feed you) for coming to the bar/club”, escort work?

It’s just promo modelling to me. Couple of my friends used to do it. They’d get paid (in cash, drinks or food, depending on the event) to attend a certain club. They didn’t have to flirt with random customers or anything, they didn’t even have to talk, they were simply paid to show up.

    • j.eyre says:

So what was at stake in your bet with yourself?

    • Lucrezia says:

      Life, the universe, everything.

Since I lost, the world is doomed (and Kaiser is to blame – obviously).

I really should’ve taken the other side of the bet. At least that way, if I’d lost, we could look at Cumberbatch while facing our doom.

      • j.eyre says:

See, I’m Californian so when I bet with myself its for something a little more low key – a drink, a massage, washing the car… or, you know, sex.

But I have always admired your “Go Big or Doom the Universe” attitude.

    • Anna says:

Lucrezia, I worked in Milan, models were paid to show up in clubs, not flirting not drinking, just showing up. Men are always flocking where beautiful women are and the owners knew that. I remember it was 200-250 euro/a few hours of sipping a couple of free drinks with your girlfriends.

  7. ag-UK says:

Was this a new moronic interview a few weeks ago OR the same one as it appears to be the same. Please no more I almost spat out my miso soup seeing her face… I went 2 weeks without ever seeing anything about her I don’t buy the Times (not allowed) ENOUGH.

  8. manta says:

She bears a resemblance to Peta Wilson in the last picture.Oh those days of Michael and Nikita…

    • Dulcinea says:

I thought the same thing! Oh Michael and Nikita was one of the best romances on TV.

    • minime says:

Indeed in the last photo she does…but she can only wish to actually really look like Peta Wilson. She is so awesome and she was the best “Nikita” ever!

      • LAK says:

Personally, I find the original ‘Nikita’, Anne Parillaud, from the original film is still the best.

      • minime says:

@ LAK: I heard that the original “Nikita” is really good but shamefully I never watched the movie. I was still a little kid when I saw the series and Peta Wilson was kinda of my first star “crush” 🙂 But I have the original movie here and I’m looking forward to finally see it.

  9. Kiddo says:

I don’t understand the dismissive tone in the analysis of her interview. She was speaking about global agencies, and she came from Russia, a place where desperate women sometimes sold themselves as mail order brides. Why would it be okay if these types of things happen, only not in our backyard?

    • Elle says:

I was wondering the same thing, kiddo. Nothing she said (in this article) came across as dumb or glib. She actually brought up some very good issues. My friend is in India right now on a modelng contract (we’re from Canada) and her agent takes out all the models (they actually do live together) every night to clubs, to party, to mingle and to network. It’s part of the job and anyone who doesn’t do it is seen as uncooperative and usually have their contracts cancelled. They’re not expected to put or anything but they are expected to socialise andp party practically every night of the week (along with doing photoshoots and what have you during the day).

      • Kiddo says:

I think if the subject had been broached by Cate Blanchett, taking up a cause, this thread would be filled with people falling over themselves with praise for bringing the issue to the forefront.

      • T.Fanty says:

Actually, reading up after my flippant comment, I’m glad you wrote what you did. At the risk of getting dramatic, what she’s talking about is the continued trafficking of women, particularly from less affluent parts of the world that means “modeling” for the pretty ones and backstreet brothels for the regular women. What she’s talking about is definitely on the spectrum, even if my label feels a little excessive.

      • KCO says:

When I modeled in NY, I chose to go with a smaller “boutique” agency, over a top agency, who wanted me to lose a lot of weight. My agent at this smaller agency pressured, and later commanded, us to come out to the clubs, and after a third weekend of blowing him off, he called me into his office to yell at me for “insubordination”. I yelled right back at him, making up some story about being a young recovering alcoholic (it was the only thing I could think of as an excuse to NOT be out there clubbing and wheeling and dealing with the rest of them) and his whole tune changed. Surprisingly, he felt so terrible, actually apologized, and offered me food and snacks every time I went into the agency after that. I stopped getting the emails and phone calls about “weekend activities,” as he called it.

    • haley says:

because shes just a dumb blonde that hooked up with ~*cumby<3333*~ and couldnt possibly have anything worthwhile to say. eyeroll.
i actually appreciate that she brought attention to the matter.

    • Harriet says:

This woman is a hideous self publicising fame monger. She’s desperate for fame and her publicist live in boyfriend is out to get it for her. Believe me, they’ve both been very calculated about it for months. If anyone’s taken in by her miss world style ‘I’m going to make the planet a better place’ sctick, then more fool you, I’m afraid.
If she cared remotely passionately about anything, then her FB, instagram, twitter etc.. Wouldn’t be full of ME, ME, ME.. Dresses, parties, money etc. She’d use the fact that she mystifyingly has gained a fan base to raise the issues if she really cared. In her quest for fame on her reality show, she’s now ‘speaking up’.
She calls herself a ‘campaigner’ but what is she actually doing? And furthermore, her rich family let her go abroad in her desperation to model. So her wailing for model’s rights is quite far down the list in terms of global issues as far as I’m concerned. She whinged about no food etc.. But she could’ve just gone home? Im more concerned about people living in abject, inescapable poverty. She’s jumping on a bandwagon to get some attention along with all the other sideshow exhibits in that reality show abomination. She’s NOTHING to do with him and I’m sick of seeing his name brought into the sleazy press she’s trying to grab. Please stop subjecting us to her.

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Something weird happened with my post. I’m going to try again.

I was wondering if I had missed anything because there’s a pretty negative response to the piece, I’m not sure that I did miss anything. I know she talks a lot of crap but she knows that world, she’s been there and she isn’t saying anything that we didn’t already know. I don’t think she has a reason to be anything but genuine about her experiences. The industry is built on a bedrock of exploitation–tossing little girls into busy cities when half of the time they don’t speak English, sometimes they’re paid in clothing–as if that’s sustenance–and they’re shoved into a kennel with a group of girls who are similarly unready for the responsibility. They’ve got these girls completely under their thumb because these kids have no options.

What’s a fourteen-year-old with all of her family and loved ones on the other side of the planet going to do if she’s in an uncomfortable situation? She could get fired or blackballed, undermined or bullied and be entirely open to suggestion, whether she realizes it, or not. You can always be replaced, everyone knows that, and when you’re that young, you haven’t had the time to cultivate and nurture those areas of life that aren’t captured under studio lights.

        Sinead wasn’t wrong.

      • Laura says:

She’s awful. She’s not saying anything that hasn’t been said by others before and incidentally, others who have actually made an effort to do something practical and substantial as opposed to just making a few grand and sensational soundbites in an interview. It’s all clearly designed to get her publicity for that horror of a reality TV show. I agree with Harriet, her FB page etc has nothing but a bunch of cringeworthy and attention seeking posts all related to her going to vacuous parties and wearing over priced clothes.
Trying to portray herself as a humanitarian is all a bit transparent really. And as for 14 year old girls in a foreign country being vulnerable, why the hell are their parents allowing them to do it anyway – shouldn’t they be culpable? She was keen to say how her parents were “too clever to be poor” (nice). Clearly weren’t that clever.

  10. GeeMoney says:

Oh god. Please stop giving this twit press.

  11. Tulip says:

Still not sure how I feel about her, but she gets points for pointing out that the industry can be a sh-tty one and that young girls should be aware of the scams.

Anna James and Olivia Poulet are not terrible.

    • Green Girl says:

I am with Tish. From what I can tell, Olivia and Anna were great and had their own careers that didn’t depend on their connections to him.

  15. Tish says:

“and then he brought her to Ibiza”
Uhm, actually no. They were invited seperately.

  16. Celine says:

    Kaiser:
As someone who’s done modeling internationally I can verify what she’s saying. It is real modeling, not escorting though: the girls go to new countries to work with a modeling agency, have proper contracts etc., nothing shady about that. But even if you are working constantly for good clients, the agency will pay you after your contract is finished, usually it’s for 3 months or so. So during that time, you’re on your own or getting a small amount of “pocket money” from the agency.
The guys who approach model girls do not work with the modeling agency, they are so called PR guys that are hired by clubs or restaurants to lure in models. Often the modeling agency doesn’t even know that their models are going out, or don’t care. The girls get free dinner, free drinks at cool restaurants and nightclubs, the PR guys get paid by restaurants or clubs, and the restaurants and clubs get more customers that come hoping to hit on a foreign model or just get some eye-candy. It’s not really shady per se, but when people know where the models hang out, of course you get weirdos coming in as well. On the other hand, many single young model girls are interested in meeting successful, eligible men to date, so there can be kind of a mutual interest as well.

So, my point being: what she’s saying is true, but it’s more of the dark side of the lifestyle of international models. It’s not related to the modeling agencies doing escorting or not being a “real” model. It’s also understandable for young pretty girls in a foreign country to want to go out in their free time, party and explore. Just because most international models have times they’re out of cash, instead of choosing where to go for dinner they end up going for free dinners at “model clubs” knowing but ignoring the fact that there will be men trying to talk to them.

  20. karolina says:

I am a former model who was with a legit agency, so it works like this: when you start fresh, the agency takes a risk and has expenses as the most important thing is to build your book first. A good book is soso important, so they pay for the photographers and everything, you don’t have to pay. They also send you abroad, send you to go sees and again you don’t need to pay anything. However as soon as you start earning, you have to pay them back. If you never earn anything, then they just have a loss, but legit agencies take risk like that. However at some stage you will earn some money and they charge you for every little shit. So it might be that it takes half a year or so after your first money winning jobs until you actually see some money, as the agency keeps it as long as you are in depth with them. But every one has to start like this and if you are a good working model with an agency who cares you can get jobs where you earn 8000 euro just for 1 tv commercial which takes you maybe 12 hours too shoot, then it pays off eventually. Reality is however that most models actually earn shit as they can only get small shitty local jobs. Doing runway is a good thing to get noticed, but unless you are some starmodel for some big designer at ny fashionweek it pays you almost nothing. And you are piece of meat, everyone is underage (like 16!) anorexic, bulimic and dumb as f*ck. Seriously most models are not bright and have really superficial interests, no wonder when you are a kid with almost no education who has no talent or real skills. Sad, women hating business it is, run by either gay men, pedo men or old disgusting pervert men.

    • Alexa says:

I appreciate what you wrote here, karolina, and will keep it as a good reality check should one of my little nieces become fixated on becoming a “glamorous fashion model” when she grows up:

“. . . Reality is however that most models actually earn shit as they can only get small shitty local jobs. • Felice says:

Ditto on the perverted men. Most “fashion photographers” that are not well known or respected tend to just want to take pictures of girls.

      • karolina says:

Thank god I quit after only 3 years, now I am a scientist and my next publication appears in the new england journal of medicine (brag brag brag lol) But seriously, there are so many young girls in this business who either don’t have an education or completely neglect it. I know the easy money is tempting, but as a model you spent 95% of the time waiting. Waiting to get your make up done, waiting at the fitting, waiting backstage at fashion shows, waiting at shoots, waiting for trains, planes, cabs, waiting at go sees. Many times waiting results in no money, many times you sit around 6 hours waiting, “work” maybe 30 minutes and get paid 150 €. Of course surrounded by other underage girls, many of them troubled and sick, most of them being russians or the like, coming from extremely poor families having to support them with their model pennies, they know little english or no english at all. At some point I asked myself what other things I could achieve in the time I waited at those sad “jobs”. And hell, I chose an occupation where my looks have nothing to do with anything and where only my brain power counts. I think modelling is okay if you do it as a side job to finance your studies, because when you are lucky it really is so easy to earn good pocket money. However you should never put it first and know when to quit.

She still has a wide face, so guess the teeth-pulling thing didn’t work.
