Lou Reed passed away yesterday at the age of 71

Lou Reed passed away yesterday. He was 71 years old. Reed was an icon of rock n’ roll, indie rock, experimental rock, pop art, politics, and whatever else you can think of. My first exposure to Reed was when I first listened to The Velvet Underground when I was a young teenager – it was a revelation that at some point (in the late 1960s), there was a band making music that defied what we conventionally thought of as “music”. I fell in love with Nico’s bizarre, breathy, light voice, but I’ll admit that it took a bit longer for me to fall for Lou Reed’s already-hard voice.

After The Velvet Underground split in 1970, Lou Reed continued his solo career. I’m including some videos of some of my favorite Lou Reed songs below. He’s survived by his wife Laurie Anderson, an artist. Lou underwent a liver transplant earlier this year, but friends and colleagues say that even though he was frail this past year, he was still vital and passionate. One of his last acts was a written review of Kanye West’s latest album, which Lou Reed loved – you can read the review here. Doesn’t it seem like Kanye and Lou would have loved to hang out with each other?

Anyway, rest in peace to the coolest guy in New York.

I love Lou Reed, too, always have. It was so sad to hear that he died. No one was ever like him or ever will be. Love his wife, Laurie Anderson, too. She’s a performance artist and has made some absolutely BRILLIANT music, very abstract and atmospheric. Her early stuff was like nothing else, and even now in her 60s she is still a creative powerhouse – her latest album, “Homeland” is something I like to listen to when I need to get my creative juices going or want to set a spell in my house when certain people come over. The two of them together – Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson – I always thought what a tour de force they had to be as a couple. I can’t even imagine how she’s ever going to get over the loss of him from her life.

I had no idea until yesterday he has undergone a liver transplant and had been ill for several years. Goes to show you can keep things quiet in the world of celebrity if you want to. Reed will be missed.

Just last week, out of the blue, I turned to my husband and said “I don’t think you’ve ever heard Lou Reed’s album Berlin”. We then proceeded to listen to it at home and in the car over and over, also discussing Reed’s unique brilliance. Strange that I had this sudden impulse to go back to his music just days before he died. I’m glad that I did. His music will live on and on. He will be missed.
