Gwyneth Paltrow shows off some 1940s period style in London: stunning?

Here are some photos of Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor in London last Friday. They were filming scenes for a new movie in a café on the South Bank. That movie? Mortdecai, the new Johnny Depp film where Depp plays an art dealer hunting for some painting which holds a code to the location of some hidden Nazi gold. The film is an adaptation of Kyril Bonfiglioli’s final novel. It’s being described as a “crime comedy”. Which I guess is why Johnny Depp has blonde hair and a mustache.

As for Goop and Ewan… have they ever worked together before? Let me see… YES. They did Emma together, how did I not remember that off the top of my head?! Damn it. Emma is one of the few Goop films that I can watch and thoroughly enjoy despite Gwyneth. I might even think it’s one of her best films – I would also recommend the more recent adaptation with Romola Garai too, with Jonny Lee Miller as Mr. Knightley. Anyway, Ewan played Frank Churchill in Emma. They had a surprising amount of chemistry together, but Ewan is one of those actors who could have chemistry with an inanimate object.

So, Goop and Ewan have reunited on-screen for Mortdecai with Johnny Depp. This is, from my understanding, a period film set in the 1940s. Which explains Gwyneth’s styling here. Even though I’m not a Goop fan, I’ll admit it – she can really pull off period styling. The way she looks here reminds me a lot of how she looked in The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Oooo… I just looked at the IMDB for this film, Paul Bettany is in it too. And Olivia Munn. WTF?

She really does look so pretty!

  2. Eve says:

I have to stop clicking on articles that show pictures of movies being made. By the time a movie is released I have the feeling I’ve already seen it — and that’s because I’ve seen 400 pictures of it.

I’ve realized this is kinda “breaking the magic” for me.

    • blue marie says:

My sister in law said the same thing. She went and saw Catching Fire this weekend and said there were parts that felt like deja vu.

      • Eve says:

And she’s probably right (I haven’t seen Catching Fire and I don’t plan to, didn’t like the Hunger Games).

But in my (specific) case, it’s been ruining my suspension of disbelief.

      • LadySlippers says:

@Eve: Catching Fire was SO SO SO much better than the first movie. It was honestly a very good movie.

      • Eve says:

Sorry, LadyS, but I’d rather watch Loki 2: The Dark Loki again (which I’m going to do this week, by the way).

      • LadySlippers says:

No worries Eve. I still have to see T2 but wanted to let you know Catching Fire was honestly good. New director & new script writer made such a difference between the 1st & 2nd movie. And I strongly disliked the first movie. Even the acting was significantly better — better all around.

      • Eve says:

Francis Lawrence — I really liked I Am Legend (minus the frustrating ending and some bad CGI job/special effects) and Constantine. I may give Catching Fire a chance, but only when it’s on cable.

      • janie says:

She looks lovely in these photos, to bad her personality doesn’t match.

  3. Agnes says:

“Ewan is one of those actors who could have chemistry with an inanimate object”

I couldn’t have put it better myself. He’s the only reason I’ll watch this movie.

  4. Faye says:

I actually think Goop looks better in period styling than she does when she tries to be all cool and “daring.”

Thanks for the tip about the Romola Garai version of “Emma” – can’t believe I didn’t know she did one! I love Romola – she’s very talented and versatile, and I feel like she’s very underrated, for some reason.

  5. Hannah says:

Does it really take place in the 40s? The pictures I’ve seen, including these of Gwyneth, don’t look very 40s to me?

    • Kiddo says:

Oops, missed your post. I agree, it looks like a loose interpretation of the 40’s, but not the 40’s, more 70’s or 80’s.

      • Hannah says:

Yeah, not a lot of guys dyed their hair peroxide blonde in the 40s, I don’t think. On second thought, not a lot of guys do that, period.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Agree, it’s more “40s inspired” but that blouse is beautiful.

    • Stacy says:

This I thought I was the only one. I’m not seeing 40s inspired clothing nor am I seeing how
      “great” she looks.

  6. Kiddo says:

Her hair doesn’t look 40’s enough; I watch an abundance of TCM. That’s a weird sentence but I didn’t know how else to phrase it. That said, she looks better than usual.

  7. Jennifer12 says:

I don’t care one way or the other about her, but I think she looks terrific. Reminds me of Veronica Lake; is this deliberate styling? Ewan MacGregor makes me melt.

    • V4Real says:

Why are you cursing Veronica Lake? 🙂 This is a much better look for her but I still don’t find her that attractive, never did.

    • Estella says:

I hate to admit it, but I think she looks terrific too. That small bust in the silky top, tiny waist, and wavy hair are reasons to envy her. Working with the sex that is Ewan is the green icing on the envy cake for me!

  8. LadySlippers says:

Kaiser — WTH??? No hot pics of Ewan???? Sure Gwyneth looks nice but that’s not newsworthy (okay it might be) but no Ewan??? Ewan’s fabulous! How are we supposed to start the week with no hot men?!???

Please rectify this issue as soon as possible.

    😉

  9. Talie says:

She looks her best in these rich, snob looks. See: Great Expectations, Talented Mr. Ripley and A Perfect Murder. All great 90s Gwyneth looks.

    • marina says:

That’s probably because she doesn’t have to act in these roles. That’s pretty much who she is in real life.

      • LAK says:

In retrospect, EMMA too. Her character is a spoilt rich girl who knows better than everyone and doesn’t hesitate to ‘improve’ them if they don’t fit her world.

    • Nina W says:

Emma is a good movie and I’m no GP fan.

  10. Nona says:

She looks amazing, but you know what I really like (besides Ewan)? She can move her face! Good for her.

  11. MonicaQ says:

All I can think of when I see her is, “I would rather die than eat cheese from a can.”

This is going to ruin the Marvel movies for me. Especially since on of my friends got broken up with this weekend and the parting shot was, “I’M ALLOWED TO NOT LIKE CHEEEESE.” She was a little…batty. Anyway, Ms. Paltrow looks nice here.

  12. Frida_K says:

She doesn’t have the body to carry off a 1940s look. She’s more 1920s flapper-esque.

    Meh.

    • B says:

What? Did everyone in the 40’s have the same body-type?

      • Frida_K says:

        Whoa, calm down, buddy!

Look at Hannah’s comment and the thread above. The hair doesn’t look 1940s. I remarked that the body doesn’t look 1940s either and I meant it in the sense that this is a movie. If she doesn’t have the body type that most immediately attach to the 1940s (hourglass) then what she’s wearing doesn’t help her look 1940s either. A thinner actress with a flat chest (Goop) needs looser, more blouse-y up top and more wide-legged pants to give her the silhouette that is readily associated with the 1940s.

Of course there were different body types and you know that. How she’s dressed and what she looks like does not communicate “1940s” readily and, since this is a movie, that needs to occur or the mixed message detracts and distracts.

      • B says:

I’m not sure why her body-type needs to communicate 1940s readily. You’re talking about needing a caricature of someone to “get” the movie. I think most people will be able to get it when her body is combined with every single other detail, including the dialogue, set dressing, music, other character’s costumes, etc., etc., etc.

  13. Bored suburbanhousewife says:

I agree with your choice of Emma as her best role. She was completely convincing in the role possibly because Emma is an over privileged oblivious busybody trying to tell everyone beneath her what to do. Oh wait, Gwyneth played herself, that explains it…..

  14. glaugh says:

she looks gorgeous. i want those clothes for myself. and ewan too, obv.

  15. Kortnee says:

Anyone know where I could find that white blouse????

  16. j.eyre says:

You buried the lead with an all Gwyneth title? Ewan should always be in the title… always. It’s Ewan and he’s spectacular.

Sorry, who else is in these shots?

  17. Abbicci says:

So, she moved back to L.A. so she could make a film in London. Why does that seem odd to me?

She does look very pretty in the pics. Like she just had something good to eat that wasn’t made from angst, anxiety and body dysmorphia.

  18. shellybean says:

She does look great styled like this. It suits her.

  19. annaloo. says:

I never realized how large her nose was and how thin her lips are. She looks like a tortoise in profile to me…..

  20. Ash says:

She looks so pretty! I love the hair. Of course I am a 1940’s hair & fashion fan. This reminds me of her movie “Sliding Doors”. That’s the movie where she chopped off all of her hair and really pulled it off. That’s when I really became a fan of hers.

I think another one of my hair envy ladies, Kate Middleton, would look good with this style.

  21. Secret Squirrel says:

Ewan gets better and better! Gwennie is looking nice in these pix, but I’m not sure I can see 1940’s in there. Will reserve judgment until more pix or the movie comes out.

  22. jj says:

Don’t really care about McGregor and Johnny Depp and his movies leave me stone cold. I rather see her doing some independent stuff like she did recently with Mark Ruffalo. (and I like her as Pepper Potts) She also did great work in movies like Proof, Hard Eight, Sylvia and Sky Captain. I wish she would work with Paul Thomas Anderson again.

    • Nina W says:

Pepper is a terrible role for her, it’s very flat and one-dimensional and she lacks the oomph necessary to mark the role as her own.

  23. Anna Scott says:

She looks gorgeous! I love love love her hair styled this way

  24. lucy2 says:

She looks very pretty here. She should hire that hair stylist full time – what an improvement.

  25. Kathryn says:

Even is absolutely gorgeous, I think he’s getting better with age… That twinkle in his eye 😉

  26. isfd says:

Am I the only one who thinks that blake lively is a lot her in looks (well a younger version) and image.

  27. Dorothy says:

She has had the Sculptra done definitely. Much more too, she’s had many many surgeries yet only copped to a little Thermage or something. Actually, it’s amazing what they can do with lasers and injectibles so yes she looks a little better but she is still not really pretty in person and ugly as it gets inside. JJust latest attempt at getting Chris back and urged by PR to at least look better. Plus of course the movie lighting, makeup, wardrobe etc. The good thing is if you go to a great Dr. they can do amazing things without surgery these days just so unfair because average woman can’t afford it. Gwyneth is considered in the industry to spend more money and time on her appearance than just about any other actress out there. Again, she still just isn’t attractive though when you see her you honestly would not look twice unless she just had all her work done and tons of effort to look good “makeup free”. Many beauties out there but she is not one. She has just gotten more self absorbed and demanding by the day though at this point and PR really pressuring her to look good so they can justify her being hated because of jealousy (oh please) instead of that she is just hateable.

  28. Case says:

    27 Dorothy; You’re right!
