Those snakes are giving the ladies at Ascot a run for their money.

  2. Lisa says:

    Shut up, Katy Perry.

    • zinjojo says:

Yes, it really only gets more offensive. They took an actual kimono and slit the neckline to better show off her boobs.

I think all of the uneducated pop stars/movie starlets need a lesson in cultural appropriation.

    • tifzlan says:

They also had elements of other Asian, non-Japanese culture thrown into the performance. Fetishizing at its best (worst).

      • Lark says:

That is what got me about Katy Perry’s whole hot mess of a performance. They took a bunch of elements of different Asian cultures, and attempted to pretend they were all Japanese…plus, that particular song about unconditional love coupled with that performance was the worst part of it….

  3. Abby says:

I love Charlize and Jackson is a cutie

Now here’s a lady who Fassy should have dated

  4. Leila In Wunderland says:

To me it wasn’t Katy’s costume in and of itself that was offensive, it was the costume coupled with the performance.

  5. Samtha says:

Jackson is the CUTEST. Those pictures are adorable, and Charlize looks so happy.

I don’t get people criticizing Katy Perry’s outfit. I mean, does that mean that performers can never ever dress up as people outside their own culture/ethnicity, because they will “fall into stereotypes”, “fetishize” or “mock”? I’m not Katy’s fan, but she didn’t try to ridicule or diminish Japanese culture to a simple stereotype. I got it as a kind of esthetic category she was trying to make, which in her/her people vision fitted the show. Maybe we should cancel Puccini’ s Madame Butterfly from theaters, because it has a geisha in it, despite being written by NON asian composer? Come on, this kind of thinking gets us closed only in our own culture in a fear of getting accused of “cultural fetishism”.

    • Sheila says:

I strongly agree! I have never, until recently, heard so many people making so much ado about nothing.

      • Han says:

I am not japanese so i will refrain from saying it was offensive or not offensive. I think that is for the people whose culture she is stealing from to say. All i will say is that the knee-jerk reaction for westerns or americans to be blasé about this kind of stuff. Its often said that so and so minority needs to “get over it”. Same as in the case of Julianne Houghs black face. And thats the other thing a lot of these hollywood stars and their stylist seems to be a bit ignorant of the wider impact of their choices.

    • Ramona Q. says:

      Amen. Politically correct knee-jerk reaction.

    • mrsbowie says:

This. A thousand times. I am so over our political correctness. If I wear a Zulu skirt with a dutch traditional uniform in my punk band’s performance am I being an entertainer or a cultural neanderthal with no sensitivity towards other cultures? Can artists be free to express themselves visually and entertain people? I am a lot more irritated with the so-called artists that sing other people’s songs, half naked, with auto tune to get attention. I am not a fan of Mz Perry but I give her credit for giving a performance, writing her own shit (even though it may be formulaic, at least she is writing it) and always a professional entertainer *and breathe*

I’m Asian and I was annoyed with Kathy’s performance. IT IS NOT about the fact that Kathy is wearing a ‘kimono’; if she wore a REAL traditional Japanese kimono than she would have been fine. There are thousands of non-Asians wearing Asian clothing and for the most part, it is great. I love it when global celebs use Asian fashion. But in this case, Kathy just didn’t wear it – she took it and combined it with another Chinese dress ‘qipao’ and ‘sexualized’ the heck out of it with the chest area cut-out and the super high slits. Japanese kimono don’t have such cut outs or high slits; and if she wanted to wear a sexy Asian dress – than she could have wear a sexy ‘qipao’ but that’s not Japanese and therefore not a ‘geisha’. In addition, it contributes to the misunderstanding that ‘geisha’ are courtesans/sex workers while in reality, real/true geisha are just cultural performers — art/dance/musicians [there’s a sub-group that do sex work but not the majority]. Kathy’s performance was just combing all sorts of different Asian cultures into a show under disguise of a ‘Japanese geisha’ which isn’t correct. It just gave off an impression of ignorance or that all Asian cultures are the same, and that it was a sloppy fetish tribute instead of a real appreciation of Japanese or Asian culture. I love Puccini’s Madame Butterfly and never had any problems with it because again – it’s not about people wearing the clothes or adopting the fashion; but doing in a respectful way. Traditional Japanese kimono can be sexy — don’t need to but chopped up and cut out.

Jackson Theron is the definition of unadulterated joy in that photo. The Zach Braff photo-bombing is funny and endearing. Those snakes will have their revenge! And Alec Baldwin is no more at MSNBC.

I adore Charlize! I just saw her perfume commercial that has run for years and I still think everytime, if I was going to be jealous, that would be her. But seems like she is actually pretty cool, which is SO rare these days. She, like Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Garner, never have, or will I highly doubt, do anything that would publicly humiliate their kids, put themselves over them for their own sick need for attention, ignore them or downright endanger them as shockingly a few do constantly! Plus, she is talented, private, does not get by on her connections or take the free pass on her exceptional good looks. So nice to hear about these wonderful women as opposed to all the aforementioned idiots out there. All the best to her and that adorable young son! So glad to see Mom’s cherish the time with them, it goes so fast, no? And just goes to show you, you can have a relatively private life in order to give your children a happy normal childhood in spite of being famous, like she and Jen and Sandy do. Happy Thanksgiving all!

    • Maggi says:

I agree with this, except for all the Jennifer Garner stuff. She doesn’t belong in the same company as these other cool ladies,

    • Cindy says:

What are you talking about ?

( I highly doubt, do anything that would publicly humiliate their kids, put themselves over them for their own sick need for attention, ignore them or downright endanger them as shockingly a few do constantly ) Oo

Jen pimps out her kids all the time, they are the most photograph celebrity kids so how is she giving them a private life .

I like Charlize but the first time we saw pictures of Jackson was when she was promoting “Snow White and the Huntsman
Ravenna” up until then she covered his face with a blanket.

  9. kellyinseattle says:

Charlize and Jackson look so happy – just like they belong together…:) He’ll give her a run for her money; he looks a little precocious. Congrats to them.
