John Oliver bids adieu to The Daily Show with laughs, tears: amazing?

This is probably the best video you’ll watch all day. I try to watch The Daily Show as much as possible, mostly because I adore Jon Stewart so much, in all of his grumpy, bitter, sarcastic glory. But when Jon Stewart was working on a side project over the summer (he was directing a film), John Oliver took over Stewart’s hosting duties and I found myself still tuning in. Oliver has been with TDS for more than seven years – I believe he was TDS’s first British comedian/correspondent, and he quickly became a fan favorite because… well, he’s hysterical. Anyway, Oliver did such a great job with hosting TDS over the summer that HBO offered him his own HBO show which sounds like just some kind of take-off of The Daily Show, with maybe some Real Time with Bill Maher mixed in. Moving from Comedy Central to HBO is an upward, prestige move, and no one judged Oliver for taking it.

So, last night was Oliver’s final night on The Daily Show. I guess Oliver and Stewart had spent a few hours rehearsing a bit about the Queen (because seriously, they are amazing when they talk about royalty!), but one minute into the bit, Stewart canceled it and ended up doing a farewell package for Oliver’s send-off. It was amazing. This is so funny and then there were tears!

Is there anything better than an Englishman crying? No. There is not. I’m getting misty too just seeing Oliver’s emotion. What’s great is that Oliver did amazing comedic work for The Daily Show, he seems like a really great guy, and now he’s getting recognized for his talent on his own. Oh, and I could watch Oliver’s Dickensian impressions all day long.

Also: DIMPLES. Lord, I love dimples.

I had actually stopped watching TDS because I don’t have cable. I downloaded Hulu on my phone when I read about Jon Stewart taking off for a few months and I was intrigued to see how the show would hold up without him. Absolutely adored John Oliver and ended up watching the show when it was released each morning. Now I listen to both TDS and Colbert Report on my morning walks, and I partly laugh and partly grit my teeth at some of the asinine things occurring in our country these days. I’ve found it’s been a pretty balanced source of news, despite it’s comedic base, during the shutdown and ACA fallout. Jon Stewart just tells it like it is, even if you’re a liberal screwing up. So thank you, John Oliver, for bringing me back to TDS…can’t wait to check out the new show!

That was priceless. I’m wiping tears, too. And I agree with Jon that John’s “in the field” pieces were genius, my favorite parts of the show (That RNC lady in Hawaii, for example, I’d forgotten about her.).

He’s brilliant and hilarious and you can tell he’s just a genuinely good guy. Wishing him much success.

    Love him. He’s hysterical.

NOOOO. Oliver was the only reason I still watch TDS. What will I do now?

Absolutely adore John Oliver. I had never watched The Daily Show before he was the main host and I stopped watching after Jon Stewart came back. The Daily Show is obviously a great programme and John Oliver did such a great job this past summer.
You know all those hot guys who are always featured on this website? Well I would ditch all of them if I had a chance with John Oliver: glasses, accent, dimples, smart, hilarious. I would so hit it.

Awww GREAT video!! I don’t know John Oliver from TDS – I only know him (and fell in love with him) on Community — and I think he’s coming back for a few episodes this season. He is absolutely hilarious. Can’t wait!!

John will be missed. But I wish him the best of luck in all his endeavors.

Ugh as a Canadian, I can’t watch this from my location, but the message telling me that I can’t is hilarious LOL

for Americans, it says “in case you can’t give up your free healthcare and move to America, you can watch The Daily Show on Comedy Network” hahaha

I enjoy cheeky, bewildered Oliver as much as I love righteously pissed off Stewart. I think John makes every show he’s on better, even when it’s just a bit part on Community. So happy he’s getting his own show.

That was actually the best video I have seen in a while, so awesome, made me a bit tear-y.

Good luck to John Oliver. TDS obviously means so much to him, especially since it’s how he met his wife.

This really is a huge loss for the Daily Show. I love John Oliver and I thought he was amazing filling in this summer. So sad to see him go, and even sadder that I don’t have HBO to watch him.

My husband and I were so surprised my the genuine show of emotion. It was awesome!! I ended up watching that segment again this morning and it was just as touching as the first time I watched it. Good luck, John Oliver!!

  15. Ally8 says:

Oh good, I’m glad! He was dreadful.

Given the chance, I would hit it with John Oliver like hittin’ was goin’ out of style. My SigOth totally doesn’t get it. He says it’s just the accent, but that’s like saying it’s just the accent, wacky humor, the big dark eyes, the cute hair . . . yeah, it’s just all of those things.
