Shakira: ‘My man, Gerard, prefers meat over bone. He doesn’t like too skinny’

shakira1

Shakira is looking great these days, isn’t she? She’s found a hair color and style that really works, she lost the baby weight and her style seems to be slightly more conservative. All in all, I think this is the best she’s ever looked. Shakira covers the new issue of Glamour, which she seems to be using a platform to discuss her humanitarian and advocacy work. I like Shakira’s music, but I LOVE her advocacy work on behalf of children living in poverty. She’s known as one of those celebrities who really knows her stuff and puts her money and her time where her mouth is. She’s wonderful. Here are some highlights from the Glamour piece:

Shakira on her duet with Rihanna…
“[W]orking with her was utopia. She’s the sexiest woman on the planet. And at the end of the day, we’re both just basically Caribbean girls. The chemistry was so good and so real. She taught me dance moves. She was a sweet teacher.”

Working with fellow The Voice judge Adam Levine and other men in the industry…
“Dealing with boys at work and being the only girl can be challenging. I have my insecurities, but I’ve learned I have to be a good sport. I have to be able to take certain jokes and not take them personally. There are jokes made almost every second of the day. I had to develop a tough hide. You know, the music industry is dominated by guys. I work with men 98 percent of the time—producers, arrangers, musicians, engineers.”

Her success…
“Success happened little by little for me. I tasted the flavor of fame in small doses: I started at 10 years old when I won a music contest; I was performing at birthday parties, company meetings. I met with a record executive when I was 13 and sang ‘Material Girl’ to a cassette-tape boom box. I’ve shaken hands at every radio station, from Honduras to Ryan Seacrest’s. One day [I realized I was famous] enough. But here’s the thing: I’m still hungry. But I’m not hungry for fame—just the need to prove to myself that I can still do this.”

Her vision for her life…
“I feel like I’m not on earth just to shake it and shake it endlessly, you know?”

Whether she has gotten any grief from Latin fans about her blond hair or being too thin…
“At the beginning. But my man, Gerard, prefers meat over bone. He doesn’t like too skinny. [Laughs.] That takes pressure off. I already have a lot to worry about. This month I’m not exercising because I have an album to finish and I have a baby. And I like these pastries in front of me.”

Whether the injustice she saw growing up planted the seed for her education charity…
“Being raised in a developing country opened my eyes to so much I cannot tolerate. In Colombia, education is sometimes considered a luxury, not a human right. And it’s not a priority in the agendas of many leaders. I feel a real sense of duty to use the voice and the platform I’ve been afforded by my fame to speak out for those whose voices don’t get a chance to be heard. [The Barefoot Foundation] provides education to vulnerable kids who live in extreme poverty. We’ve built six schools in Colombia and do work in South Africa and Haiti. We teach 5,000 students.”

I love this quote: “I feel like I’m not on earth just to shake it and shake it endlessly.” Get it, Shakira. But surely she can shake it a little bit? As for her relationship with Gerard Pique… I used to like them together, but people have told me that he seems like a d-bag and maybe he’s got a wandering dong? I haven’t heard much about that recently, but I’ll admit that I don’t always follow Spanish-language scandals. As for “my man, Gerard, prefers meat over bone. He doesn’t like too skinny…” Yes, but what do YOU prefer, Shakira?

I love that she’s talking about a real issue (lack of education in Columbia) but of course no woman would ever be allowed to do that in an interview without also mentioning her body/body image/exercise plan/diet/men.
Baby steps… hopefully Shakira gets more attention for her charitable activities and less for her shaking. She seems to be very grounded. Acknowledging she can’t have her baby and work and still find time to maintain a perfect body. Way better than “look at my post baby bod” magazine covers!

    • Florc says:

She knows how to play the game. Good for her giving up a little superficial info for her cause to get print space as well.
I’ll watch spanish gossip tv to brush up on the language. He’s a d-bag, but it isn’t well covered. Out of respect for Shakira maybe?

      • Lucy says:

Don’t know if it’s true, but from what I’ve seen (as in, the guy she dated for ten years prior Pique), she doesn’t really have a douche-radar. That’s kinda the only thing that bothers me about her. Which is such a shame, because she’s not a douchey woman at all. Oh well, nobody’s perfect, right? Then again, we could be totally wrong about Pique (PS: Doesn’t he give you Baby Hemsworth vibes?)

      • bob says:

I’ve heard that Piqué likes 40 year old waitresses along with Cescy, but the national team players are seen as demigods so possibly why it doesn’t come out as much.

  2. blue marie says:

I like her, she does good work. And even though I don’t work in the music industry, my industry is predominately male and she is completely right. If I complained over every joke I heard I would never get any work done, so I save my offense for the really nasty things said and developed a thick skin for everything else.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

@blue marie, I think that’s the only thing you can do in your situation, because if you complain about every inappropriate remark you won’t be taken seriously when something truly egregious occurs, but I wish you didn’t have to do it. I wish none of us did.

  3. Rhea says:

Hmmm…my man don’t care either way. I was naturally thin as a rail before but not anymore after having 2 kids. 🙂 He still loves it anyway. As long as I’m healthy and happy.

    • mom2two says:

And that’s the key-feeling healthy and happy. I’ve never been thin but I have been on a date with a guy who would not go on a second date with me because I was too fat for him (ouch!).
But I landed a wonderful man who loves me no matter what and I feel the same for him.
Back to Shakira, I like her and I think she looks good.

  4. Ice Maiden says:

”I already have a lot to worry about. ”

Stop it. You’re breaking my heart.

  5. Lflips says:

She looks pretty darn skinny to me…

  6. Backwards says:

Pique seems like a great guy and is loved in Spain (well by Barca fans at least :P). When they hooked up, I remember people were pretty sick of her and their PDA’s all over Barcelona. I think that’s all passed now.

    • Tapioca says:

I’m not sure about the Barca fans anymore – he was possibly the best central defender on Earth when he hooked up with Shakira, now he’s pretty much the slowest and most overrated and was often relegated to the bench by Pep Guardiola in his last season.

Someone should probably spend less time trying to be Beckham and more doing sprint drills!

      • Backwards says:

Jeeze, I’ve missed a lot in the la liga! I do remember him being benched a lot during peps reign. I’m a united fan (don’t laugh)

      • lylaooo says:

        @Tapioca
i dont remember him been the best central defender en Earth! ahahhaah (sorry not sorry) he´s always been slooww… i mmexican and no offense but Rafa Marquez was one of the best central defender Barca ever had. and Gerard ad nothing to do with.

and i hate her as blonde! she was amazing with darker hair and her oldest songs were amaazing too..nothing to do with the garbage she makes now.

  7. Ice Maiden says:

”But my man, Gerard, prefers meat over bone. He doesn’t like too skinny. [Laughs.] That takes pressure off.”

The obvious implication is that if her man did like her ‘skinny’, she would feel under pressure to diet.

    Nice.

    • hadleyb says:

Or how about when all the overweight women say my husband / man likes my roundness / curviness/ plump body? The need to stay fat ( due to your man or laziness ) is ok even though it might be causing health problems?

But I think we are over thinking this simple statement, MANY people say ” my husband likes ____” and thats why I do it. I cook more meat and pasta because yes, my husband loves it. I don’t. I do a lot of things for my husband and family because it makes them happy and it makes me happy that they are happy!

      • Liz says:

Cooking a meal he likes is different than altering your entire body to please him. You have to draw the line somewhere. And, frankly, these are the things the Real Housewives ladies always say about their husbands, and just look at the shape most of their husbands are in. It seems pretty one-sided most of the time.

      • Ice Maiden says:

@Liz I agree. At least Pique is pretty fit himself, but the fact that she answers a question by saying what her husband likes is a bit sad. As is the fact that she seems to be referring to herself as a cut of prime steak. But maybe it sounded better in Spanish?

      • Ennie says:

She is not changing her entire body for him. She was not a very thin girl when younger. She was actually not on the thin side, but I would not call her chubby.
        http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ln0ui3M8321qcdvsyo1_400.jpg
She got too thin when she went blonde and started to make it in the English Speaking world, and all over the world.
For the Loca video she got too thin, I do not think it is her regular shape, and she probably diets a lot for the filming of videos, I hope se relaxes a little the thin blonde schtick is old.

    • PrettyTarheelFan says:

Not only that, but she may be saying, “I don’t face pressure at home to conform to an unrealistic image.” I posted a very long rant yesterday on disordered eating and how your perception of your self-worth and even your body is shaped by your environment. I let my husband read it last night, and he almost cried-he knows I have always hated my body, but I have never articulated for him what’s it like in my head. Then we talked about the fact that even when I was my ideal weight, I still hated my legs and wanted smaller hips and thighs. If her man is down and supportive of her no matter her weight, then that’s a healthy environment. MrBuckeye is like that, he is fine with whatever I weigh, but so many men are not like that. They regard their women’s weight as a symbol of status. Thin hot woman=bigger dick.

      • GreenTurtle says:

Good for MrBuckeye! Mr Turtle is similarly supportive and wonderful, no matter what. I think (or at least hope) the ” pressure” Shakira speaks of is more in her own head than in her guy’s. Like, he assures her of that, and she lets herself off the hook. I know that’s the case with me. Let’s hope it’s the case with her. Shaki is awesome.

  8. Tig says:

I respect her humanitarian work, esp the emphasis on young girls. I also think their son is adorable, and not being a football fanatic, will defer to those who do re his skills on the pitch. I hope he keeping it in his pants, bec they are a cute couple.

  9. ashley says:

I love shakira!!! I love what she does for the poor, can’t wait to hear her new single with rihanna.

  10. Juan Topo says:

we all know that Pique likes to eat meat, specialli Ibrahimovic´s meat…

  11. TG says:

I used to be a huge fan of Shakira’s but after she put out that horrible album “She-Wolf” I haven’t listened to any of her new work. I don’t think she was being honest with herself with that album and it showed. She is so sexy and gorgeous and Rihanna lost some of hers with that hideous tattoo she has but I do look forward to hearing their song.

  12. Mark says:

Where are all people getting mad over the skinny shaming?

  13. jinni says:

How is she from the Caribbean? She’s from Colombia, right? That’s in South America, that’s not the Caribbean. I know that Guyana usually get lumped in with the British West Indies during the West Indian Parade in NY because of the fact that culturally Guyana has more in common with the islands colonized by the Brits than with the other countries near it in South America, but I never heard of Colombia be considered a Caribbean country. I guess.

Also, I know she’s trying to make her dude sound good by saying he likes women with meat on their bones, but she’s also making herself sound like the kind of chick that changes her appearance to please her guy which isn’t really in line with the strong, independent woman thing she has going on for her image.

    • Gossipgeek says:

About the caribbean thing: She comes from Barranquilla, a city in the northern coast of Colombia (to which we refer as Caribbean coast, because that part of the Atlantic ocean is the Caribbean sea). I believe this region is culturally (and also geographically, perhaps economically) very similar to the islands so I don’t see a problem with what she says…

  14. OhDear says:

I’ve always liked Shakira (though her music isn’t my style). As for her and Pique, (1) their constant PDA and wuvy duvyness was annoying as hell and (2) I always thought that he was the lucky one in the relationship. He often comes across as childish, IMO.

(Full disclosure: am *not* a Barca fan)

  15. Kiddo says:

Okay, cue the concern trolling on the obesity epidemic and lack of support for skinny women. Yawn. This was basically a toss-away comment, not an edict on how everyone’s body should be.

  16. Darlene says:

When I was younger, I was naturally stick thin with long, blonde hair. I got a lot of attention from men in public. Once, I went on a trip to Mexico and I was walking with a female friend who happened to be significantly heavier than I was and who had never received much attention in clubs in the US. Heads were turning everywhere for her, and no one was even glancing at me. My friend was getting nervous and she and I stopped to talk about it. A man overheard us and he leaned over and said in a thick accent “Meat is for the man; bone is for the dog.” and my friend and I were kind of slack-jawed and then we had a good laugh. 25 years later and I am no longer a “bone”, and I’ve used that phrase myself for years when speaking to friends about our changing figures. We’re “juicer” now, I figure. 🙂

    • Liz says:

Ew. If that had happened to me and my friend, there would have been a lot more mace and profanities involved.

      • Darlene says:

It was harmless. No one said anything “dirty” or “leered” or touched us, we didn’t feel creeped out at all. My friend was pretty psyched about the whole thing, TBH.

      • Aysla says:

Yikes. Don’t go to any Latin country then, Liz.

    • nicegirl says:

hilarious! thanks for sharing, am gonna use that one!

    • Lauraq says:

You don’t realize what was wrong with someone saying ‘bone is for the dog’? That’s a nasty cruel thing to say. It would be the same as a guy saying that dogs should get the fatty cuts of meat.

  17. paola says:

One of the best interviews ever. She really is a down to earth girl.

  18. Not says:

thats what he told her.And then he goes and finds em zelf some stick &bones.Thats life.

  19. Diana says:

Actually there was a scandal in Colombia about how her so called fundation was just a way to avoid taxes but whatever, charity!!!

  20. Ajla R says:

I have never heard of any scandal regarding Piqué’s “wandering dong”, and I live in Barcelona.. People here were so tired of them together when they first hooked up (some people even preferred the Piqué/Zlatan thing, lol) but I guess they’re okay, they have an adorable little son, and it seems like they really, really love each other. I’m happy for them.
