Here are some photos from last night’s National Board of Review Awards, which are… I don’t even know how to describe them. The NBRs are one of the first critics’ awards to be announced and I think that because they’re first, people give them the weight of being some kind of bellwether. They’re not. This year’s NBR Awards included awards for Emma Thompson (Best Actress), Bruce Dern (Best Actor), Will Forte (Supporting), Octavia Spencer (Supporting) and they named Her as their Best Film. See? That list doesn’t make a lot of sense. However, they did give Michael B. Jordan a special award for his “breakthrough performance” in Fruitvale Station, which is well-deserved. I would have prefered seeing him on the Best Actor shortlist for every major award, but the NBR is nice too.
Anyway, I’m making Emma Thompson the lead lady just because I love her so much and I love how fluffy her hair is these days. It really feels like she’s trying to be glam, and I appreciate it. She IS glam. I saw Saving Mr. Banks and while the film was uneven at times, Emma’s performance was wonderful as the bitter and damaged PL Travers. She can do so much without saying a word and I just love her. I kind of wonder if Emma isn’t going to dethrone Cate Blanchett for Best Actress this year.
I’m also including photos of everyone’s favorite red carpet couple, Leo DiCaprio and Marty Scorsese, plus Octavia Spencer (is it just me or is her outfit really great for a curvy lady?), Michael B. Jordan (YES), Will Forte (why?), Jessica Chastain (I love the dress but not the color), Lea Seydoux & Adele Exarchopoulos (the ladies from Blue Is the Warmest Color), Meryl Streep (not loving that dress), Jonah Hill (meh) and Oscar Isaac (HOT!).

Why does Leo’s head keep getting bigger? Is it just the angle? Is he okay? He’s starting to look like a slightly younger James Lipton from the Actor’s Studio and James’s in his 80’s. Leo get it together.
I’m totally seeing that not you mentioned it
Choosing between Cate or Emma is like choosing between which child is your favorite.I love them both equally.
I feel deliciously spoiled to have to choose between Cate and Emma.
Except Emma already has a BA and Cate’s was stolen from her by grimacing baby pink satin! That said, either would do for me.
Chastain’s bra strap is attractive. Not.
While I wish that Adele E was sweeping this award season as I felt that she gave the best female performance of 2013, I have come to accept that Cate is going to win pretty much all of the major awards this season. And am ok with that, sort of. Emma winning a few critics awards breaks up the monotony but she is not going to win anything else. I do love the interviews that she is giving and she looks amazing.
I think all the men look great and the women look comfortable. I actually like Jessica’s dress, but her shoes are so boring. Why would you wear something so vibrant and lovely and then put on a basic pair of black shoes?
I love Octavia’s hair. I cannot tell if it is a wig though. Either way she looks amazing.
The shoes aren’t black. Indigo-purple, embellished.
love em both
Will Forte is a lovely guy. And I like his suit.
Will Forte was in Nebraska, that’s why. I haven’t heard anything about his performance though.
Oops, missed what the commenter below said…good performance.
will forte is best supporting actor, you sait in the first paragraph¡¡¡¡¡
“This year’s NBR Awards included awards for Emma Thompson (Best Actress), Bruce Dern (Best Actor), Will Forte (Supporting), Octavia Spencer (Supporting) and they named Her as their Best Film. See? That list doesn’t make a lot of sense.”
Except that Her is a terrific film that totally deserves awards, it’s just too weird and offbeat for the more mainstream Academy, and Bruce Dern has the best shot of upsetting Chiwetel Ejiofor for best actor. No critic group is a good bellwether for the Academy, because critics only make up a very small sliver of the Academy’s voting bloc, but they generally do a better job of rewarding a more diverse crop of movies. Compare the critics’ awards with the guild nominations (a far better gauge for how the Academy is feeling about a movie) and you’ll notice more varied titles and performance awards from the critics.
I think Emma is just rounding out the category, honestly.
No Cate Blanchett’s got this. The Oscar already has her name engraved on it.
Everyone looked good in their outfits except for Jessica Chastain. Gurl you need a new stylist.
Totally agree about Chastain’s dress. That’s a tough, tough colour for anyone to pull off but especially hard for a redhead.
It works well on highway clean-up details and roadwork corridors, but that’s about it.
Emma does look glam and I love her so much, but Cate had better get best actress! Octavia’s look is beautiful and I love Michael B Jordan!
