The Queen shares the stage with no one! I was rooting for so many different people last night, I kind of forgot that Cate Blanchett was and is considered the top contender for all of the Best Actress awards this year for her riveting, funny, tragic performance in Blue Jasmine. Cate is really wonderful in Blue Jasmine, in case you haven’t seen it – it really is a tour de force performance. But that’s easy to forget because everyone loves when Cate brings her energy to the red carpet. Last night was no exception – Cate always brings the thinking woman’s drama. At first I didn’t understand her Armani gown, then I was like, “Okay, maybe I get it” and then I saw it from the back and I understood… it was a dress to be viewed in 3D. It was a performance dress.
You know what I love? I love that this dress could have so easily gone the Marchesa route. Think about it – the material is flimsy, there’s lots of lace and some chintzy bead work and I’m pretty sure there’s illusion netting in the back. But somehow, Armani made it work and putting it on Cate took it to another level. This was one of my favorite looks of the night. And I hear you about her hair, that was my one complaint (although I didn’t hate her hair as much as some people). She should have gone for something that moved a bit more while still achieving the old-Hollywood glamour she was going for.
And although I said Cate shares the stage with no one, here’s Robin Wright (and her fiancé Ben Foster) in Reem Acra. I think her hair is still too short and the color is much too neutral, but she’s a winner and she’s still Princess Buttercup. She owns it and she looks comfortable, so good for her.

Cate the Great was good, but could have been more. Just…MORE. And slightly less ‘sad’. At this point the dress felt a little safe for her. But I love the styling unequivocally, especially the glam hair.
I love Cate but this is not her best look.
I’m surprised that no one has pointed out that Robin is giving a bit of side boob especially in that second pic. Her body is fantastic though.
I agree. Not impressed w/Cate’s dress.
Robin looked great and I’m all for the minimalist, natural look but something was just off with her. Maybe bc it seems her and Naomi were wearing the same dress.
I loved Cate’s hair. I was not a fan of either dress but they are both very much within each ladies style choices – they are flattering for their figures, for sure.
I also expected a better speech from Cate. Kind of along your “just more” thoughts.
She did say there were a few vodkas involved already!
I know I will get pummeled. I did not like Cate’s dress at all. Plus, when she went to get up for her speech, it looked uncomfortable as hell. She was tugging at it and it looked as though she felt awkward in it. He posture was incredibly hunchy. It plays better in the still photos, but having seen her move, nah.
Said the same below before I saw this. I cosign entirely. She was obviously uncomfortable in the dress. And women adjusting gowns is a real sticking point for me. If you have to pull it up, or down or adjust the straps – pick something else!
Yep.
I didn’t like it either. I thought it had to be a Marchesa dress until I read otherwise. Just horrible.
I think Cate looks great, her hair fits the dress.
And I will always love Robin for giving me Princess Buttercup but I wish she would smile more, she always seems so uncomfortable. (that might just be the Penn effect though)
Robin Wright’s body is incredible! She’s in great shape.
I never like any of the stuff Cate wears… *ducks*
Queen Cate! One of the best dresses I have ever seen, but , personally, I think her hair, makeup and jewellery should have been stronger.
Robin looks blah. The hair really doesn’t suit her.
Yeah, a high bun or sleek hair would have been much better.
Kate’s dress is beautiful MOSTLY because there’s a second nude layer under it and we don’t have to see granny panties or legs. She looks like an actual movie star.
I agree that Robin’s hair is too light – it washes her out – but she looks spectacular in that dress. It’s revealing but not vulgar.
I agree. Cate looks like an actual Movie Star. I love that she always brings it.
I love Cate but I didn’t like this look. The hair bugged me and the dress was ok except for the top.
This. I’m NOT a fan of the top of this dress at all.
You can call it ‘prive’ or whatever fancy word you like. Just because it’s an Armani doesn’t automatically mean it is flattering. That dress, to me, looks like a giant black doilie. I hate it. Cate looks like a granny in it and it’s not like she hasn’t got a body size/shape that is difficult to clothe [i.e. like Lena Dunham], but she always makes terrible dress choices. But it’s not the worst dress. The award for worst dress should go to Julia Roberts.
The celebrity that makes the best dress choices is Sophia Vergara. She never gets her dress wrong.
Sophia’s look every time is tits and arse. Every time. Snoooooze!
Cate had one of my favourite looks of the night. It wasn’t my absolute favourite though.
Cate was a miss for me this year. *ducks for cover* I didn’t like that she was constantly adjusting her dress all night. It just seemed awkward.
I agree about Robin Wright’s hair – it’s too short for her, although I love that cut. Her body is amazing and the dress was great – except when she flashed her petal while accepting her award!
Cate looks amazing! you mention how incredible the back of the dress is in your article – it would have been nice to see a photo of it from the back.
Robin Wright looks like Patricia Arquette…
I really liked Cate’s dress on her. Agree different hair might have been better, but she looked lovely.
I liked Robin’s dress but was starting to worry she’d have a malfunction.
The top of Robin’s dress looks like a speedo. It makes her shoulders look so broad. She has a great figure but could have picked something much more flattering.
My thought exactly. Robin is in amazing shape, but the cut of the dress is not flattering to her (especially with the pose in the last photo). Gives the look of swimmers’ arms – great if you are that muscular and fit, but not necessarily a good look for the red carpet.
Cate – stunning, as usual.
Robin – it’s all a little too beige.
The dress wasnt the best, but Cate looked amazing in it. The dress makes you forget the woman bore two kids!
Robin Wright and Cate Blanchett I vote for having the best bare backs of the evening.
For such a beautiful woman, Robin hits the wrong notes in terms of hair and dress-style and color.
I thought her dress was amazing! Flawless and she killed in it. However, she still takes 2nd to Lupito who was PERFECTION!
I think it’s a fab dress too!
I think both Cate and Robin would have benefitted from a different color of lipstick. Cate’s is too…mauve-pink? I would have liked something a bit more electric and red toned.
I don’t know. I think Cate looks too “Betty Draper”.
oh god, she is total perfection! i don’t care what she wears or how she does her hair. cate has so much talent, so much class- i’m so glad she won. next, the oscar. *it’s all happening* 😀
me too, I don’t care what any of them wear (I’m odd like that) but I was really pleased she got the recognition she deserves for her talent
Holy Botox, Batman. If we’re going to talk about Kate Beckinsale, someone’s gotta say something about Cate’s face. She’s been tweaked into oblivion!
She has a gorgeous wrinkly face actually, forehead, eyes, and the smile lines, hell even her chin. look at the hq closeups .
Did you see Robin run to the stage from her table in Topeka to get her award? Anyone who can run in a dress like that in high heels has my deep admiration.
In fairness that is one of the main things her character does – runs like the clappers 😉
Cate is STUNNING!
I loved Cate’s look…and also the shade she threw at U2 about liking their first album.
I kinda like the dress, especially the material and stuff but not the style.
I don’t think her hair style suits the dress either.
However am a little partial when it comes to Cate cos she is a striking woman and in a class of her own from her peers.
I don’t like the blonde look, prefer brunette but Cate is one of my all-time favorite blondes along with Vivian Leigh,Grace Kelly,Charlize,Hilary Duff,Marlene Dietrich,Sharon Stone,Scarlett,Douzten and Heather Graham -They all work their blondness.
Hm, not sure how I feel about the dress but Cate makes anything look good because she OWNS whatever she’s wearing and does so with poise and grace.
Ben Foster’s smile is giving me tingles, however bald is not a particularly good look for him.
I think if she’d worn some emeralds, or maybe rubies the dress would’ve popped better.
Cate!what a woman! i would give an arm and leg to look half as good as either them,by the time i reach their age
I haven’t seen Blue Jasmine, and I don’t want to sound churlish but I was really rooting for Judi to win. She was fantastic in ‘Philomena’, her Irish accent was flawless -and you lads know how particular I am- and it’s such an important subject. There are thousands of adopted middle-aged people in the US who were basically taken from their mothers sold.
Robin is excellent in ‘House of Cards’ and is a worthy winner.
Kevin Spacey was robbed of a nomination. He’ll be in the running next year and will deserve the win. He is spectacular as Frank Underwood.
She looked divine.
I LOVE everything about Cate’s look. It falls in the ” why ever wear anything else?” category.
