Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael at the Globes: did the ‘Downton’ girls look fab?

wenn20983147

Didn’t the Downton Abbey ladies look beautiful last night? When Michelle Dockery arrived on the red carpet, I swear, there was almost a moment of awed silence, just like Lupita Nyong’o got when she arrived in a cape. It’s not even that Michelle’s Oscar de la Renta gown was such a win or even that much of a style statement – it was a pretty (mullet!) dress, but it was kind of meh. The whole reason everyone watched Michelle was because everything from the waist up was perfection. Michelle had “the best hair” of the Globes, I’m just calling it now. And I love that she kept her porcelain skin and didn’t fake tan. She just looked glowing and flawless.

The other Downton lady, Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith) also looked great. On Downton, they style her to look like “the ugly sister” too much, but I think in real life, Laura is quite fetching. She wore this Viktor & Rolf which fits her like a glove.

And here’s the Khaleesi, Emilia Clarke, in Proenza Schouler. I hated this dress! So unflattering. But her hair looked decent and she’s another one who glowed.

Laura Carmichael is really pretty IRL

  2. Spooks says:

The Downton girls were among the best. Beautiful. And such pretty pale skin.

    • Sullivan says:

Lovely complexions. They embrace their pale skin and look gorgeous. Michelle is beautiful.

Hollywood, enough with the orange spray tans. You look ridiculous and, frankly, like you need medical attention.

      • Spooks says:

I have that combination of dark hair and very pale skin, so it’s so great to finally see someone who doesn’t act like fair skin is undesirable.

      • Mika says:

@Spooks You know, many people where I’m from would KILL to have a fair complexion. Every single skin care company will at least have one or two lines of skin-whitening products.

      • Spooks says:

Really? I’ve never even seen a skin whitening product. Isn’t that dangerous?
My mom was very pale and ginger and she got teased a lot when she was a kid so she’s also really happy that pale skin is finally accepted.

      • LAK says:

Spooks: sadly skin lightening is the no 1 ‘beauty treatment’ in many countries that shall go nameless. No major beauty brand can sell to those countries if they don’t have skin lightening products in their range.

    • Nastja says:

      True English roses.

    • Zigggy says:

Yay pale skin! If only it were easier to find a foundation pale enough that doesn’t look pinky 😉

    • Schnee says:

Michelle seems to spot the shiny forehead of recent botox treatment though, non?

    • Kate says:

      OMG, Lady Edith is beautiful!!!!!

  3. Anna says:

I really, REALLY liked Lady Mary’s look. While on everyone else I’d complain about the predictability of the beige/grey/metallic non-color, her particular coloring (=head), poise, and an unusual hemline couples with a sculpted skirt totally pulled it off.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree. It wasn’t a fashion risk, but she looks absolutely beautiful and classic. I like that.

  4. Livan says:

Laura’s dress is great! And att first I didn’t recognize her as Edith! Michelle sure is beautiful, girlcrush! I do not hate Emilia’s dress either, somewhat interesting I think.

  5. BendyWindy says:

The ladies of Downton look amazing!

I want to like Emilia Clarke, I just can’t.

  6. TG says:

Yes love the Downton Ladies and The Khaleesi. I had to switch to Downton Abbey for an hour last night, I don’t have a DVR since most times I don’t need one.

  7. Hannah says:

Rather like the Proenza Schouler dress. Emilia is young enough to pull it off.

  8. Dani2 says:

Khaleesi! God, Emilia has such a pretty face, and the dress actually isn’t that bad on her, I wish she’s done something different with her hair though.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think she’s so much prettier blonde, but if she’s actually a brunette I suppose that would be brutal on her hair.

  9. Naye in VA says:

I’m always amazed when I see Michelle Dockery in “real” life. She just looks so amiable and relaxed and beautiful. If this was the Lady Mary on Downton I could understand why all they boys fall over her….but instead…bitchface.

  10. Esmom says:

I’m always amazed at how hot Laura Carmichael is in real life compared to how she’s styled on the show. Although I think they’re making her look prettier this season now that she’s feeling empowered in her career and in love.

Michelle as always looks lovely. I’m such a sucker for a gray dress.

But I watched the whole GG show last night and didn’t see them once. Were they banished to some remote table? Or maybe I blinked and missed any panning the cameras may have done over them.

  11. JudyK says:

Michelle’s silvery dress is the most gorgeous thing I’ve seen in a long, long time…and love the shoes, too. Exquisite!

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I worship Oscar de la Renta. His colors and shapes are always so feminine and lovely.

  12. Murphy says:

I’m not a fan of the heavy dark eye make up Laura Carmichael always wears (like all the time except on set), but overall I thought they were both fabulous!

  13. Mika says:

The pattern on the Khaleesi’s dress made my skin crawl… My trypophobia isn’t helping at all..

  14. Jacqueline says:

The Downton ladies are always so beautiful, but I get caught off-guard each time I see a picture of them IRL. I have only been exposed to them as their characters – so it’s refreshing!

  15. Mrs. Darcy says:

Laura is considered the edgy fashion girl of the Downton crew in the U.K. I guess, her dress is definitely the best fit. I love the pale girls embracing their skin, they really do look glowing, incl. the Khaleesi.

  16. Nicolette says:

    Love Michelle’s dress. Beautiful!

    • emmie_a says:

I agree. Her dress was one of my favorites. Simple yet beautiful.
Only thing I’d change is instead of pumps I’d wear an ankle strap sandal.

  17. smee says:

I too dislike the “mullet dress” but Michelle Dockery’s dress is gorgeous – more like a tea length with an interesting front than a true mullet. My only problem with it – shouldn’t your shoes be a-freaking-mazing for that hem line? Her shoes are fine, but dull.

Laura Carmichael’s dress is not the right color for her skin tone (Lupita currently owns the color white right now) and the black trim is awkward.

  18. BeckyR says:

Perfection…both of them. Some celebrities in this country could learn a few things from them.

  19. Leigh says:

‘Michelle had “the best hair” of the Globes, I’m just calling it now.’ EW, are you kidding me??! All I could think of was that her hair reminded me of Sally Fields in Steel Magnolias. I hated it.

  20. Reece says:

Gorgeous all of them! The one problem (which is kinda big) is the color of Khaleesi’s dress doesn’t work on her. The pattern looks like somebody forgot to mop the floor then put it under a microscope. I still like it.

  21. Swan Lake says:

Michelle and Laura both looked great!

  22. John says:

Dockery needs to LAY OFF the Botox. Seriously.
It works for Lady Mary, but her acting is wooden enough, the fact that she has one expression because she can’t move her face is just disturbing.

(I’ve already seen the entirety of the season now airing in the US, hehehehe)

  23. Lex says:

I like Emilia’s dress – it is a bit of an optical illusion. Sure, she’d look better in bright colours but I think she looks lovely as always. Khaleesi can do no wrong.
