Julia Roberts & Meryl Streep: who was the best-dressed at the Critics Choice?

wenn20997966

Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts lost in their respective categories, Best Actress and Best Supporting. But they still showed up, so I guess we should give them some credit. Although I will say this… posing on red carpets wearing sunglasses? NO. Only Jack Nicholson can get away with that, and even then, he rarely walks a red carpet.

Let’s talk about Julia first. She wore this Juan Carlos Obando which… I’m not really feeling. I like the cut of the gown a lot – it flattered Julia’s body and it made me wonder if she got some boob work done (they look bigger and higher). But the fabric is off. I kind of wonder if this might have been an opportunity for a bolder print, right? She’s a big, tall woman and she could have worked a big, major print.

As for Meryl, she wore this incredibly unflattering Stella McCartney. Is there any other kind of Stella dress? I understand the urge to wear a shorter, cocktail-style dress to the Critics Choice, but don’t go with Stella. The cut is terrible, the sleeves are ridiculous and that bejeweled accent is a disaster.

Speaking of Meryl… have you heard about her next project with Harvey Weinstein? When Harvey sat down with Howard Stern earlier this week, he teased a new film he’ll be producing called The Senator’s Wife. Harvey went a bit power-mad when describing it, saying: “I’m going to make a movie with Meryl Streep, and we’re going to take [gun rights] head-on. And [the NRA is] going to wish they weren’t alive after I’m done with them.”

Harvey Weinstein takes down the NRA. That will be the day. Not that I do not wish him all the luck in the world, going head to head with THE MOST POWERFUL LOBBY IN AMERICA.

  2. smee says:

Julia’s dress shouldn’t have 3/4 sleeves. Some accessories would have helped (and I’m not talking about sunglasses). Better than usual for her, but it looks unfinished.

Meryl’s dress ages her. Stiff fabric, nice color. She looks dowdy, but happy!

    • MsGoblin says:

I think if Meryl’s dress had been more closely fitted to her body, it would have looked decent. But then again, we’re talking about a Stella McCartney creation.

    • Christo says:

THIS. Meryl’s dress should have been tailored to fit her body moreso, but this style of dress always has a signature bell-shape to it. That being said, the hem of the dress hits in all the wrong places. While it looks immensely comfortable, she would have looked better in something that hits below the knees—perhaps mid-calf to move attention away from the uneven texture the black hose create around her knees. In addition, a closed-toe shoe should have been used because peep-toe shoes seem odd with hose because they betray the false illusion of texture, contouring and uniformity that hose are supposed to convey.

  3. bns says:

Has Julia always dressed like a 60 year old woman on the red carpet?

    • Anna says:

Only the last 5-7 years. It’s her ‘I’m JULIA, I dont have to try’ phase.

    • blue marie says:

Ha! Glad I’m not the only one who thought that, that’s a horrible dress for her.

    • Sabah says:

Julia doesn’t look 60! I think it’s refreshing not to have to see tits and ass from every celeb

      • Dani2 says:

It’s not about tits and @ss, you don’t have to show the two to look a) your age and b) attractive. I’ve seen pastor’s wives/female pastors that look more attractive than Julia in this dress.

EDIT: the comment I was replying to disappeared.

    • Josephine says:

Yes, she has. She has the peculiar habit of picking the most unflattering clothes, even when she was younger.

  4. Renee says:

Um, both of their outfits are terrible but I have to say that their faces both look pretty and I don’t even like either of them.

Stella McCartney did design a nice dress once…the one that Hilary Duff wore to her sweet 16 party (remember when she was dating that 25-yr-old from Good Charlotte who is now married to Nicole Ritchie??? I guess she wasn’t always bland!!!)

Harvey Weinstein shouldn’t have spoken about his film yet. What’s the sense in getting people all riled up when you don’t even now if the film is going to be good yet?

    • LadyMTL says:

Hah, he’s Harvey Weinstein and I think that shooting his mouth off is like breathing to him.

As for the dresses, I dislike both of them too. I wish Meryl hadn’t gone with Stella McCartney because there’s nothing at all fashionable about this mess of a dress. At least with Julia’s I can say that I like the fit, lol.

  5. lourdesdx says:

Harvey is talking as if a shrapnel hit him right in the arse.Dude, you are just a movie producer, not Tony Stark, pipe the eff down.

  6. Dani2 says:

I love Meryl but there are no winners here. Neither one looks good in their dress.

  7. mystified says:

Julia’s dress is hideous but I haven’t seen her hair and makeup look this good in over twenty years. She should give her makeup artist and hair stylist a huge raise.

  8. Kate says:

Both dresses are ugly but both women look pretty.

  9. Tahoe says:

The sun was very bright for the red carpet, many feeds were reporting that, and just as a cocktail dress is also appropriate they probably wanted to be more comfortable. And I don’t think JR has had a boob job from the second pic, she’s just wearing a better bra.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

      +1 on all

    • hadleyb says:

She got a boob job a long time ago — compare older movies to Eat Pray Love for example it was around that time before she shot that movie she got them.

I think they are more obvious now because she has gained weight in the past few years and implants or not, AND being in the menopause starting stage will cause your boobs to get bigger.

A lot of women complain about getting boobs ( some like it ) after entering menopause.

  10. don't kill me i'm french says:

The dress is very flattering on Julia

In fact, every one looked good even great ( Lupita,Amy Adams,Chastain,mcCarthy) at this award show

  11. Lindy79 says:

    I covet Julia’s hair

  12. Kiddo says:

Off topic, and stream of consciousness, but I wonder if Robert Redford’s diss of Weinstein, late last year, played any role in him being snubbed for Oscar. Isn’t Weinstein considered the all powerful Oz?
    http://www.mensjournal.com/article/print-view/robert-redfords-restless-solitude-20131015

    • lucy2 says:

I just saw an article where Redford is blaming the distributor for not promoting the film. Which he might be right about, I never saw much about it.

      • Amber says:

Sort of @Kiddo, but not really. Weinstein’s the Big Bad, who doesn’t play well with others. Dissing him doesn’t put you on any enemy’s list except maybe Harvey’s, especially if you’re Bob Redford. (The only people who like Harvey are actors who want Oscars and get them in his movies, Tarantino and David O’Russell. A lot of people have a variety of beefs with Weinstein in the vein of what Redford’s complaining about.) Redford didn’t get a nod for the same reason Tom Hanks didn’t. There just wasn’t room. Not to mention, Weinstein didn’t have a great year by his standards either. He misplayed things with “Fruitvale Station”. The film was getting hype and award buzz before it even came out at Sundance. So it was months after it’s January debut that it was finally released, mid summer in July. Which is an average of six months before most of the other contenders were released (some of these films hadn’t gotten their wide release by Globe award/Oscar nod voting time.) Weinstein clearly thought “The Butler” was his serious black film of the year and put most of his energy into it. He took the lazy, obvious route (as he typically does, just with better quality films). “August: Osage County” was his other on-the-nose, prestige film, w/ an All-Star cast, that’s obvs Oscar-bait and it’s being outpaced by the only triumph Harvey’s had this year in “Philomena” (which doesn’t have a shot at winning in any of it’s categories either.) The wizard is really only as good as the films he can purchase at Sundance and Cannes. He’s still the Big Bad of H-Wood, he’ll be back next year, but I’m sure his “failures” this year aren’t going unnoticed (and celebrated) by others.

  13. Lydia says:

Well, it wasn’t Jessica Chastain. That dress, especially the color, was horrid. And homegirl is looking OLD these days. Of course, she could be 50 but still pretending to be 29…

  14. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yes, the dress is ugly but Meryl looks cute in it somehow. She has pretty legs.

    • Cecilia says:

I know I’m alone, but I think Meryl looks great & I think the dress suits her very well. Such a rich fabric & color & Yes…she’s got nice pins. Julia Roberts gets on my last nerve & she has no fashion sense what-so-ever.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        Agree on all counts.

      • LahdidahBaby says:

Yes. I think Meryl looks WAY more stylish than usual, and for a Stella McCartney, that dress isn’t terrible at all. Great color, length, and fabric–but the fit is unfortunate. Even so, Meryl doesn’t look half bad.

  15. shellybean says:

    What’s with the shades?

  16. Murphy says:

Re: Sunglasses on the red carpet:

Meryl can do whatever she wants.

You can throw shade on Julia, Miley, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anne Hathaway, Bradley Cooper, etc.

But Meryl can do whatever she wants.

  17. Cazzee says:

“One toke over the line, Sweet Jesus, one toke over the line,
Sitting in a downtown railway station, one toke over the line…”

Julia and Meryl both look so happy and relaxed in these photos. Whatever their previous disagreements, they seem to be enjoying each other’s company now. Maybe they smoked a peace pipe on the way to the awards show. 🙂 Good for them!

  18. Marianne says:

I hated Meryl’s dress. Very shapeless.

I thought Julia’s dress looked really good though. I actually liked it better than her Globes look.

  19. Penelope says:

Julia’s dress looks like upholstery. Meryl looks better but still meh. The talentless Stella McCartney knows nothing about dressing women well and would be nowhere and no one if her name were Stella Smith.

  20. LaurieH says:

Do I have to pick one? They are both terrible. Meryl Streep is the consumate movie star, but she generally shows up on the red carpet dressed like a Connecticut housewife going out to dinner at the local country club. But hey, it’s Meryl. Her career has always been about the acting, not her, her beauty or being a fashionista. So she can wear whatever she wants.

Then their is Julia who, unlike Meryl, built a career on her reputation of being a “pretty woman”. And while she’s proven to have some acting chops (though not to Meryl’s level) people still expect (or at least look forward to) her showing up on the red carpet looking stunning. Yes, I know she is older now, but she is still beautiful, still has a fabulous figure and needs to stop trying to dress like Helen Mirren (whose acting level she has also not achieved).

    • Penelope says:

Roberts isn’t even remotely close to being on the same planet as Streep acting-wise. JR is quite a bad actress, IMO.

      • LaurieH says:

Julia Roberts is what I like to refer to as a “serviceable actor” – a term I use to describe about 80% of actors. Hollywood is a strange place. One can reach a stratospheric level of fame, stardom and wealth without posessing a commensurate amount of talent. And all too often, celebrities confuse the size of their paychecks with the size of their talent.

      • LahdidahBaby says:

I agree. I can’t believe it whenever Julia gets nominated. Meryl is one of the greatest actresses alive. Julia is a scene-stealing, all-about-me kind of actress who doesn’t know the meaning of the concept “nuanced.”

  21. Kosmos says:

I don’t care for either dress on Meryl or Julia….obviously, Julia’s dress is blah, full coverage and the color or print does nothing for her at all. I really don’t care for a dress that shows T&A either, but she could have found “something” much more attractive than this full coverage and unflattering piece of cloth. Julia’s hair is plus plus, though, so I’ll give her that! Meryl looks just okay…..the color looks great on her, but maybe too baggy? Or could have been more fitted and a bit longer maybe? Hair looks good, too…..

    • LahdidahBaby says:

I agree about the color (very good on Meryl) and the fit/cut (the whole problem here, I’d say).

  22. LahdidahBaby says:

Julia is a frump; terrible taste in clothes. Meryl, I hate to say it, but pretty much same-o. The diff, for me is that I really LIKE Meryl as a person and so admire her acting; I can’t stand Julia or her over-acting, scene-chewing style. And even though I realize it’s ancient history now, I still can’t look at her without thinking of the shockingly mean-spirited way she treated Vera, the make-up artist she stole her husband Danny from. It’s not great to fall in love with someone who’s already married, but the human heart is a powerful force, and I’m not gonna moralize here–it’s more what you choose to DO about it that shows who you are. For a super-powerful, super-rich-and-famous figure to publicly denigrate, bully, and ridicule the private, non-famous person whose life she has decided to take away from her is disgusting. So what I think every time I see her is: A Low Julia. What’s that got to do with fashion? Dunno, but it’s all I see when I look at her.

    • Deidra says:

You like Meryl as a person? Do you personally know her? According to her neighbors she is NOT what she seems to be on the screen.

  23. Deidra says:

Both of them show a poor taste on clothes most of the time. They are both arrogant and unpleasant. They might be good actresses, but WAY too full of themselves!
