Rihanna: ‘My jewelry’s all fake from Claire’s’ & ‘I love to wear men’s clothes’

Rihanna

These are photos of Rihanna in Beverly Hills on Monday. She’s wearing a body hugging white dress with no bra. This is something we’ve come to expect from RiRi. She often walks around in very sheer tops with no bra underneath. We’ve seen RiRi’s bra rebellion many times, but it is notable as one of the topics that Rihanna discussed during her new interview with Vogue.

We already covered Rihanna’s third Vogue cover that arrived with a budget shoot. The interview is almost as budget but is much more endearing. Rihanna actually seems pretty sweet here. She repeatedly tries to dress the journo up as “Rihanna” and fails miserably. I mean no shade against the journo at all. Rihanna can wear anything — even sweats with heels — and look amazing (if slightly trashy). Most people cannot look hot in sweats, but Rihanna tries valiantly to make it work on the journalist. RiRi also confesses to getting most of her jewelry from Claire’s boutique. I have semi-fond 1980s memories of Claire’s. I got my ears pierced there and gleefully walked out into the mall food court with my dad. Then I passed out. The rest is history, and so is Rihanna’s discussion:

Shirt or bra, not both: “If I’m wearing a top, I don’t wear a bra. If I’m wearing a bra, I just wear a bra.”

Statement jewelry only: “My jewelry’s all fake — from Claire’s. Or I get it from my mom’s boutique in Barbados. Her shop’s called FAB-U-LUS,”

Her notorious selfies: “Instagram is my way of communicating to the world. When I’m on tour, I keep fans in the loop. I don’t really think about it too much. Literally, I can be sitting in a car and be bored, so I do a selfie just because I’m bored. Or if my dog is running around in circles and I think that’s funny, I put it on Instagram. I follow girls from the Middle East. It gives you ideas.”

Her latest weave: “It’s not my hair, but the girl who donated it, she’s the bomb. Black girls never let anyone see this,” she adds, pulling apart the locks at the back of her head to show me the intricate workings of the false hair, which is woven into a net attached to her own. “I have two main hair people I work with. They’re always with me. I’m like, ‘I’m bored! I wanna change my hair!’ That’s the good thing about a weave. You can do whatever with it.”

Abandoning LA for NYC: “I’ve downsized. I want a smaller closet. I want simpler. I want to just take it back to what’s important. When I’m on tour, if I walk out of the hotel to go to Starbucks, it’s like, thousands of fans are walking there with me. It’s a lot. And that’s why I don’t do much on tour. I just hide out in my hotel.”

She loves 4-inch heels: “I can dance in them. It’s not about pain. It’s about the commitment. I say to myself, ‘I want to look like this,’ and worry about the pain later. I’ve had nights I had to tiptoe home and the balls of my feet wouldn’t even allow me to stand.”

Her personal style: “More than anything, I like a jacket. You can do anything with a great jacket, the bigger the better. You can have any silhouette underneath. It gives you an attitude. It makes a gown look cool. I love baggy things. I wear men’s clothes, men’s shoes, oxfords, creepers. When I was thirteen or fourteen, I didn’t want to wear what my mom wanted me to wear. I was very much a boy in my style, my demeanor. All my friends were guys. I loved things that boys did. I loved being easy with my clothes. I loved wearing hats and scarves and snapbacks on my head. It was my way of rebelling. I wanted to dress like my brother. After a while, it was just easier for Mom to dress us both the same. We wore the same jeans, the same T-shirts.”

On her reputation: “I don’t go out of my way to be a rebel or to have that perception, but a lot of the decisions I make, a lot of the direction I want to move, is against the grain, or against society’s tight lane, and I’m aware of that sometimes. It might not be fitting with the norm, but that’s OK for me.”

Rihanna’s statement about following girls from the Middle East makes me wonder if that’s why she thought it was okay to pose hard outside a mosque a few months ago. That was not one of her brighter moments. Here’s the Vogue cover again and some assorted moments from Rihanna’s recent street style. She really can wear almost anything.

    happening.

  2. bowers says:

I’m “old” as in 62, and if I were young again in body and mind, I’d hang with her.

    • Liv says:

I’m surprised that she didn’t sound that dumb in this interview. Also she seems to be bored a lot. Poor girl. That said I envy her being able to dance and walk in 4-inch-high heels. I feel like a stork when wearing super high high-heels.

  3. Anna says:

I agree about the weave thing. Wearing them allowed me to switch up my hair so often it was a lot of fun. Unfortunately it’s very expensive if you want high quality hair each time.

    • JojoAnn says:

Gotta watch for that receedung hairline with weaves though. I noticed she has a problem in one of her videos, (the naked-in-a-bathtub one) where the side of her head that is shaven has a very full and natural hairline but as you get to the middle of her head, where she always has a weave on, it gets very sparse. Its probably the reason she always has a coiff or a fringe in that area. You can also tell in that video that she is under instruction not to move her weave too far from the centre when she touches it. Take it easy on the weaves ladies, its not cute in the longterm.

As an aside, I follow Riri on twitter and instagram and its complete bs to claim that she isnt calculated. Her whole thing is “rebel”. Thats her brand and she goes out of her way to be ratchet.

  4. QQ says:

Idk, kinda love it all still, her interview and her shady girl moments are always good reads

  5. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

She brings out my protective, maternal instinct for some reason. She acts so tough, but there’s the appearance, at least, of a vulnerability there. Now I’m worried about her feet.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

Yeah. I really like her, and I take her for what she is, which IMHO is a young person who witnessed abuse in their household and found respite from it by doing pageants and singing. I think sometimes people who have been through her situation crave the validation of being noticed and of having people pay attention to them, and sometimes they do crazy things because that’s what they grew up with. I hope she is happy, healthy, and figuring stuff out for herself in her life.

    • ya says:

That’s a major part of her charisma – that vulnerability. Britney is the same.

  6. We Are All Made of Stars says:

She can wear almost anything…. except jeans with black poodle appliques on the cover of Vogue. They’re poodles, right?

  7. bns says:

She is so cute. Definitely buying this.

    • SnarkySnarkers says:

Shes adorable. This interview was exactly what I needed to like her again. I love the jewelry from Claires bit and the no bra if shes wearing a shirt. I’m not a huge fan of all that restriction either. She should try Forever 21 for jewelry, much better selection and its dirt cheap.

  8. Jericho says:

She has a Lisa Bonet type of beauty. No matter how dumpy or homeless they try to look, they’re still gorgeous. Kind of annoying, actually.

  9. AlmondJoy says:

She’s gorgeous. Even with all her drama, she’s still very likeable. She seems to get bored quite often though.. the woman needs a hobby lol. Seriously though, I get the idea that she’s really lonely, despite constantly having so many people around her. Makes me feel kinda sad…

    • CaribbeanLaura says:

      +1

    • Wren says:

I agree. For whatever reason I’ve got a soft spot for her and think she’d be a really fun person to hang out with, albeit not the brightest crayon in the box.

She probably doesn’t stay in one place long enough to have a hobby; it’s either work or nothing, and with non-stop tours there’s a lot of work. Maybe the things she enjoys doing aren’t the kind of thing you can take on the road, or take enough time that you feel like you can’t really get into it when you only have X amount of time between the other things you have to do. It sounds like she goes full throttle and then things just drop to nothing and she has no idea what to do with the inactivity.

I’ve had jobs like that before, where you gogogo and then you have 30 minutes or an hour or something like that before you have to gogogo again. At first you’re like, “Yes! I finally get to sit down! I am so tired of doing things!” Then, if the break is long enough for you to stop enjoying it, you get bored, but you don’t want to start something because you know you’re just going to have to get up in a minute and gogogo again.

      • AlmondJoy says:

Wren you’re so right, I can relate to that. I have a regular, normal job and it’s hard for me to keep up with my hobbies.(scrapbooking, painting, crocheting and writing just to name a few) It seems my schedule is so busy and I never get time to really get into those things unless I’m sick and home from work, or snowed in. I bet it’s even more difficult for a celebrity that’s jet setting all over the place.

    • AlmondJoy says:

      Thanks Kiddo and CaribbeanLaura! =)

    • coree says:

I agree there is loneliness that I see even with all her friends. ….I love her like hell…..I think its time for a boyfriend.

  10. Eleonor says:

In summer I go out with no bra too, it’s not a big deal to me.

  11. eliza says:

I spent most of my 20’s braless. *shrugs* If you can get away with it, why not?

I go through phases with RiRi. Sometimes she bugs me but at the moment I am Team RiRi. Plus the fact that Kim cannot land a cover and RiRi can makes me super happy!

  12. smee says:

When you’re lanky and gorgeous anything looks good on you – enjoy it while you got it! I don’t even mind her bra-less-ness – she has nice perky boobs and somehow, it doesn’t look porny or gross. Since her hair care bill must be VERY high, I’m glad her jewelry bill is low – save your $ RiRi!
As far as that mosque business, I honestly doubt she would even be aware of it’s religious significance. She may be worldly, but she’s not educated.

  13. rep says:

She’s lonely. She has not had a relationship since Chris Brown. She needs to bring the rebel with a cause attitude down a few notches, it can be scary to some people.

  14. MonicaQ says:

I totally feel her on the t-shirt and jeans thing. I didn’t learn how to “dress like a girl” until one of my professors looked at me in my Halo t-shirt, cargo pants, skate shoes, and Miami Dolphins beanie and said, “…you can’t defend your thesis like this. Come here.”

Longest (but probably best) shopping experience of my life. But my wardrobe is still that on my off hours, just minus beanie.

  15. danielle says:

She seems really likeable in interviews, and she is gorgeous. I want to see pics of her dressing up the journalist!

  16. snakecharmer says:

STUNNER! i love her. amazing style and body plus likes to have fun.

  17. Mhmm says:

    She seems so chill

  18. kimbers says:

I wore those hats when I was little. When I see them now I giggle bc everyone is wearing condom tips and when ppl wear white ones? Like a filled rubber and i bust up so bad!! Lmao those hats aren’t cute, but please ppl never stop wearing them!!

  19. ashley says:

I love rih-rih!!! She’s so down to earth and chill. She loves her family and fans,if i could just hang out with her for one day,i’d be happy!!! She’s 26 tomorrow! Wow! Time really goes by fast,i remember pon de replay like it was just yesterday.

  20. silly you says:

that vogue cover…so unfortunate. she looks beat.

also…”I don’t go out of my way to be a rebel or to have that perception”…lies.

  21. Jess says:

I actually don’t think she can wear anything and make it work. I think it’s just that her face is so pretty that people look at that and not her ugly clothes. She looks sloppy and trashy 90% of the time I see her but she’s pretty so it’s ok.

    • Jessica says:

I agree. I find it annoying that people always praise her style when she looks terrible most of the time.

  22. coree says:

I love my bajan rihrih….Barbados is proud of you…we love you…..happy birthday sweetie
