Here’s a bratty Katy Perry last weekend at Milan fashion week’s Moschino show, which was a buffet of fast-food chic. Katy did not dress for the theme, but she held up the whole show by sashaying into the venue an hour late. I don’t know why she was essential to the show, but photogs were not pleased with her late entrance. They booed her entrance on the runway, and she stood there and chewed them out: “You’re all going to get your picture, so shut the f— up.” She’s rude and entitled, but I’m more interested in seeing when she’ll ditch the bobbed wig. It’s totally a wig, right?
On to more important matters. I’m not talking about how Miley Cyrus and Katy kissed at Miley’s LA show. That’s completely unremarkable (except that Miley’s vocals were still rolling). Today’s topic is a controversy that Katy has stirred up with her Dark Horse video. Katy is no stranger to giving culturally offensive performances — such as invoking Madama Butterfly at the AMAs (where she dressed up in full geisha garb and makeup). Now the focus is on Katy and her bejeweled Cleopatra grill in her Dark Horse video.
The video is a typical Katy mess. She’s dressed as Cleopatra and destroying men at will. At about 1:15, she transforms a man who is wearing a pendant depicting the Arabic word for “Allah” into a pile of sand:
The internet is ablaze with the fallout. Many Muslims are labelling Katy’s actions as “highly disrespectful and inappropriate.” A petition is circulating to remove the video from YouTube, but you know how that usually goes. Nothing will happen to Katy, and she will reap the benefit of her offensive actions. She’s acting insensitive, but that’s nothing new for her. I can see why Muslims are upset. Katy is using their religious imagery to fuel her own money-making objectives. She’s pulling a Lady Gaga move (actually a Madonna move), which is sad because Katy sells a lot more records than Gaga. Katy should stick to her cotton candy shtick and stop resorting to engineered “controversy.”

Well, she’s an ignorant cow. Shock.
I agree, it IS insulting… the fact that she sits on the throne and melts the muslims religion symbol into dust is really offensive. Imagine if she did that to a cross… I understand the outrage honestly.. very ignorant and hurtful
Sorry if I’m bursting anyone’s martyrdom bubble, but the cross has been used in rock imagery tons and tons of times. You don’t have to imagine. You can Google.
^ but you get the point… its not nice to disrespect people (from any religion) like that for the sake of views, publicity and money…
I honestly don’t think she realizes that it’s offensive…I don’t think she is purposefully bashing a religion, it’s just unfortunate that it’s in the video. I personally enjoyed the video: cool dancing, cool cheesy effects, typical cheesy pop video. She doesn’t take herself too seriously like gaga and I think she embraces her cheesiness in the video.
Again, I think that part is offensive, but I personally don’t think it should stop people from watching the video and enjoying it.
@Trillion
Thing is, I would say it’s one thing to parody/disrespect your own culture’s dominant religion, it’s quite another to do it to someone else’s.
Rock, punk and goth imagery has utilised the image of the cross a lot, generally however the artists involved are born and raised in self-identified and/or historically Christian nations. Even if they do not actively practice the faith, the religious narrative (and the resulting social mores and traditional customs) is something they are raised in and socialised into and have a right to make social commentary on.
On the flip side, if a culturally/religious Muslim artist wants to explore or even desecrate their own symbols, there is also of course a place for that…. but having those symbols appropriated and disrespected by an ignorant outsider is a whole other kettle of fish.
Except for the fact that this has been done to christian and christian iconography for years and no one blinked or cared. Fair is fair I say, if Madonna and company can mock and desecrate christian stuff, any other religion is fair game.
Yeah, Madonna and Lady Gaga have done worse to crosses, so I’m not seeing why it should be an outrage. (Yes, I am Christian, and the antics with Christian imagery makes me roll my eyes, but I’m definitely not ‘outraged’).
So its ok to offend christians but not muslims? Sorry, but they need to learn to get over it.
I don’t think it’s okay to offend anyone. The sad part is, I don’t even think she knew what she was doing.
its not okay to offend anybodys religion. period
Religious people who get up in arms over this stuff are ridiculous. If their god/religion was so superior, they wouldn’t care about such triflings. If someone called my mom a wh-re, I wouldn’t care. I know she’s not. If she were, however, then I’d be pissed!
@Trillion: “If someone called my mom a wh-re, I wouldn’t care. I know she’s not. If she were, however, then I’d be pissed” – I think you have that backwards.
If your mother were a wh-re, and someone called her a wh-re, then that person is merely stating a fact about your mother and there is no reason to be upset. If your mother were not a wh-re and someone called her a wh-re, then that person would be making up lies about your mother, which is offensive.
Someone spreading lies is something to take offense at, someone stating facts (no matter how harsh) is not something to take offense at.
Nope, I didn’t get it backwards. I’ll try to explain it to you: If my mother were called a whore and I had no doubt that this was complete b.s., I would not care. I’d just shrug my shoulders and not waste time on it because the allegation is absurd. If she were, however, this would deeply embarrass me because I knew there was truth in it and this is something I would not be able to defend. Does that help?
I think it’s okay to offend everybody’s religion.
@Trillion:
I disagree. I would be more upset with the lies than the truth, even if the truth were embarrassing.
I’ll use a real world example: if someone called my mother a wh-re, I would be pissed off, because that person would be lying about my mother. If someone called my mother an alcoholic, I wouldn’t give a crap, because it’s the truth. Yes, it’s embarrassing; yes, it’s something I already know so I don’t need a stranger telling it to me. But it is the truth and someone calling a spade a spade is nothing to be pissed about. Having someone lie about you or your family is something to be more upset over, especially since it is hard to prove a negative and it doesn’t matter what the truth is if enough people believe the lie.
Unfortunately, I agree with you with Sonja. I think Katy’s actually too stupid to realise what she has done in her video – which is probably the saddest thing of all.
Personally, I understand why some Muslims are really upset about this. I think that the argument that simply because Christian iconography has been used and abused is invalid, because it’s not just a symbol of Islam faith being desecrated, it’s actually the word ‘Allah’ that is being done so. If the same thing happened to the word ‘God’, I am certain a lot of Christians would be up in arms about it.
Offend all religions equally.
She really is.
Also, what on Earth is Islam even doing in Ancient Egypt? Didn’t Islam came to be much later, in the 7th century, I believe?
Why bother with facts when there’s pop art to be made??? DUH! lol
I am actually really offended by the rap and thought maybe I was just being ridiculous until both one of friends and my husband said something about it in the same day.
Juicy J: She’s a beast, I call her Karma, She eat your heart out, Like Jeffrey Dahmer
Maybe it’s a midwestern thing, but I found it completely offensive to Dahmer’s victims and victims families. They still haven’t figured out all of the victims and likely never will. To make it so trivial when in fact it was drugging and murdering victims for cannibalism and then storing the bodies in acid until they liquified…well, appaling you would make light of that in a rap in a pop video.
“Dahmer’s Dead” by the Violent Femmes was appropriate because Dahmer kept talking about how they were his fave band and they were so offended, when he died, they made an anthem about how he was killed and not about how he ate people.
What wasn’t offensive in the lyrics??? And the video???!
And I’m a Midwestern girl too…
I don’t think Dahmer stored the bodies in acid, he drilled holes in their skulls and poured acid into the frontal lobe area while they were still alive.
Eat your heart out like Jeffrey Dahmer?? Holy CRAP! Those are the actual lyrics?? And no one’s talking about THAT instead of whatever necklace some guy is wearing? I am utterly speechless. I can’t even believe someone would write — much less sing — lyrics like that. Grotesque. Appalling. Macabre.
I agree that it is more offensive to dohmers (did I spell that right?) victims but ke$ha and many other singers have used reference to him in their songs and no one has freaked out about them. I think that this whole thing is being blown out of proportion and Katy probably didn’t even know it becuse she doesn’t direct her videos. Also it wasn’t Katy who did the rap it was juicy j and he probably wrote the rap not her.
This is the dumbest video I’ve ever seen.
And I’m not understanding the stripper pole thing towards the end. God, Katy is so tacky.
Well, that’s more than me. I don’t understand the music video as I’m still dazed at the hubris of the lyrics.
I agree, so very, very dumb.
Is it just me, or does one of her suitors offer her cheetos as a gift? I think visually parts of the video look interesting, but she is sooooo campy, it just comes off as silly.
That was Spicy Cheetos dear. That classed it up oh so much.
*eye roll*
LadySlippers thanks for the info on the Queen’s education.
@Lady D: At first I didn’t know what you meant! Lol. And you’re so very welcome. Asking questions is how you learn. 🙂
Ah, I see! Thank you so much for the clarification! 😉
Using ancient egyptian religious symbols is insulting to those who practice! This is an outrage!
Referencing a serial killer by name, and using his acts of diabolical torture and sadism as a descriptive for a romantic quip …. PURE OUTRAGE.
Are you being serious? I find many lyrics in music offensive and therefore don’t listen to them. Someone is always offended by somebody in this world. This is hardly the worst that is out there.
I seriously doubt Katy Perry, or any of the stylists for her videos, can read enough Arabic to know there was anything offensive in there and you have to freeze-frame the video in a specific place to even see it.
It’s hardly up there with Madonna “nailing” herself to a giant glittery cross on her Confessions tour.
Isn’t that even worse? At least Madonna did it with the religion she followed ( or used to follow) and knew something about.
I think it’s better to ‘insult’ something you are at least familiar with. You know what you are doing — or at least have a grasp of it.
Did you even understand what that performance was about? I went to the concert and cried during that performance. She offered to meet with church leaders. She was in no way mocking religion but more like a plea for humankind to act more like Jesus would in the way we treat others, especially the less fortunate. She even had a bible verse at the end. And she sang probably her most beautiful song she’s ever done, “Live to Tell.”
As she’s singing there is a counter going with the faces of starving and dying children in Africa up on the screen, and by the end it stops at 12 million. As she comes down, It informs us that is how many children have been orphaned by AIDS in Africa. It has a website for President Clinton’s organization listed there. You could have heard a pin drop. I had tears coming down my face the performance was so moving with the ending with the beautiful Bible Scripture blazed across from the Book of Matthew.
there was intent behind her performance, not mockery. Madonna on her performance:
“I am very grateful that my show was so well received all over the world. But there seems to be many misinterpretations about my appearance on the cross and I wanted to explain it myself once and for all.
There is a segment in my show where three of my dancers ‘confess’ or share harrowing experiences from their childhood that they ultimately overcame. My ‘confession’ follows and takes place on a Crucifix that I ultimately come down from. This is not a mocking of the church. It is no different than a person wearing a Cross or ‘Taking Up the Cross’ as it says in the Bible. My performance is neither anti-Christian, sacrilegious or blasphemous. Rather, it is my plea to the audience to encourage mankind to help one another and to see the world as a unified whole. I believe in my heart that if Jesus were alive today he would be doing the same thing.
My specific intent is to bring attention to the millions of children in Africa who are dying every day, and are living without care, without medicine and without hope. I am asking people to open their hearts and minds to get involved in whatever way they can.
The song ends with a quote from the Bible’s Book of Matthew: ‘For I was hungry and you gave me food. I was naked and you gave me clothing. I was sick and you took care of me and God replied, “Whatever you did for the least of my brothers… you did it to me.’
Please do not pass judgement without seeing my show.”
She’s just so…dumb. Poor girl.
While I agree that KP is ignorant and an entitled cow, I think some people make a habit of being religiously offended. I used to be one, as an atheist, sick of Christianity being shoved down my throat at my small-town HS, when there is supposed to be a separation of church and state. I really felt that way and would get up in arms about it, and it was SUCH a waste of energy. Once I matured I realized that is does not matter whatsoever what other people believe or how much they want me to believe it, too. I can’t and I won’t ever agree with them, so why get offended? Let them waste their energy and sanity, not me.
I disagree with the notion that she can’t offend whatever religion she wants, and I don’t even think that is what she was trying to do. Seriously, guys, she’s not that smart and finding offense in that is really reaching. Even if it was blatantly offensive, who cares? If you think Islam is the truth, then ignore everyone else. People insult Christianity a lot more than that in the U.S. Don’t waste your time on this dumb twatwaffle. Offense only exists in the minds of the offended.
Agreed
It’s not even that I’m insulted ( I don’t think I would be insulted, even if I was a Muslim), but that it is SO dumb. If you’re going to use any type of religious imagery, then do it well, ESPECIALLY when you know that attention will be called on it, BECAUSE of the religious imagery–no matter what religion.
This video is so juvenile…..I can’t believe her people/bosses thought this video was a good idea.
Yeah, the production value was nonexistent. I don’t think anyone thought this through. They pitched and threw it together in like, 48 hours, totally neglecting any attempt at linearity (wrong religion for the pharaohs). The bright colors and cheap props remind me of an Aqua video circa 1997.
Unrelated: I want to keep the fuzzy puppy.
I as a Muslim am insulted. Allah is the name of our God. He is the God. But I don’t give a damn what this stupid pupet is doing . she is a controlled biatch who is acting according to higher powers. These singers including Katy are worshiping the devil and their music is satanist witchcraft. As a person who worships the devil theyll try to mock other religions in their music and spreading filth with their songs.
Whoa there Eman. Grab the reins. Unless you’re being funny. If that is the case, you are excellent at parody! Well done.
I agree, Virgilia Coriolanus, it is really foolish. I am guessing that Katy herself didn’t pick out the necklace, that was probably done by the costume designer for the video.
I find Katy incredibly irritating and nearly talentless, but I don’t think this is that big of a deal.
As I said, offense only exists in the minds of the offended.
To be offended by Katy is to give her FAR too much credit, IMO, but I highly doubt she worships Satan. Satan worship is a myth, even the Church of Satan recognizes the beast as a symbol of man’s carnal urges and does not give credence to supernatural beings whatsoever, not to mention the worship thereof.
“To be offended by Katy is to give her FAR too much credit,”
So true. I remember a Rolling Stone interview with her, and she was trying to show them how “take charge” she was….so she argued and got really nasty with people on the phone about the size of the palm trees that should be on her stage. Because palm trees are what makes or breaks an amazing performance? I think Katy and her “creative vision” have the depth of a puddle in California during the drought.
” I think Katy and her “creative vision” have the depth of a puddle in California during the drought.”
Oh Tiffany 🙂 you are one of my favorite voices of reason. Palm trees. Seriously.
I agree.
She is showing how ignorant she is with this video because she’s ALSO taking several sacred Egyptian symbols and trampling on them. I don’t think she meant any offense to Islam in particular when she’s being so offensive to another religion in general here.
And boy was this video tacky. Like OMG tacky…
THIS. This is what proves she doesn’t know her ass from a hole in the ground. She’s more insulting to ancient Egyptian religion than Islam, given the copious amount of symbolism there. She and her stupid handlers thought this was all about sugary Egyptian culture imagery, and they found a necklace that looked the part. Stupid? Yes. Intentional? Probably not. That’s way more credit than they deserve.
Does anyone still practice ancient Egyptian religion? Currently, most Egyptians are Muslim.
Nope, but you may have missed the point, Lala. She was using mostly ANCIENT Egyptian imagery in addition to a snippet of Islamic imagery. The point is that the two never overlapped in Egypt and therefore she has no clue what she’s doing. She was attempting an ancient Egypt theme, and unknowingly used something outside of that canon.
I love your comment for the simple use of “twatwaffle” and I may need to use that sometime today.
LOL nice. It’s fun to see the reactions 😉
I’m more disturbed about the fact that this is so factually incorrect that I can’t believe they tried it! Allah and the concept of the Islamic religion did not take hold for about 1000 years after the reign of pharaohs and such. I like Katy Perry a lot but the more she does the dumber I think she is (just look at John Mayer)
Do you think that anyone on that set even realised that there was an Islamic connection anywhere in their vicinity? Least of all the historical accuracy of anything to do with ancient Egypt or Islam? This thing looked whacked together over the course of a weekend and the stylist’s only instructions were, ‘The theme is, like, foreign-y.’
So… stop the press? Katy Perry does something ignorant and/or obnoxious? I kinda liked the song (I tolerated it as a background noise) til this video.
That video from the Moschino show made my jaw drop. How insanely rude!! The second no one is kissing her arse that’s what she resorts to?
Does anyone really think Katy would willingly disrespect a HUGE portion of our global population with that video? Backlash can kill a career. This was probably a mistake made by the wardrobe/styling department who didn’t bother to learn what the symbol said in English. That’s a major flub. I know celebs do crazy things to get pr, but this doesn’t seem like the case. Katy’s career is doing great, she really doesn’t need to do that IMO. Actually, no one needs to do that, whether their career is going well or not, it’s not cool.
U think they will put a symbol or a word they don’t know about or what it means. Everything that u see in music videos is meant to be put there and has a meaning too.
You’d be surprised ! There’s a lot of ignorance out there. Some people will wear things just because they think it looks “cool” without having any idea what it means. Hey maybe the guy wearing the Pendant was actually Muslim and it was his OWN pendant that he chose to wear? Who knows.
If you cared enough for Katy Perry than you can feel insulted. I believe no one will ever take her seriosly. She is just playing with those things, she probably doesn’t even know they’re real religious symbols.
If people get offended on that, everyone should be offended by everything in this world. It’s a music clip not the new Kuran or a new version of the Bible or the Torah.
Michael Jackosn did an egyptian theme in ‘Remember the Time’, Lady gaga was a nun in ‘ Alejandro’, Joan of Arc was a song by The White Stripes ( this was pure genius though), Madonna played with religion in ‘Like a prayer’.
So what? nothing new!
Plus Babylon is not Egypt, i wouldn’t be offended by someone who doesn’t even know how to point the right place on the map.
Whta’s shocking here is that after so many years as a pop singer she can’t muster a single dance move! She can’t dance to save her life!
Deleted my comment.
EXACTLY! 🙂
I think she insults people/groups/our intelligence almost on a daily basis so this is a little meh. Can I start a petition to remove her from the public? Because she really insults women a lot.
Moschino? Did he just decide to give up do knock-off Chanel instead?
What’s inexplicable is that after her previous cultural booboos, she and her team aren’t more careful.
When Gaga did Alejandro, Katy Tweeted something like “Using blasphemy for entertainment is as cheap as a comedian using fart jokes.”
When she was talking crap Miley not too long ago about the skimpy stuff then she did a skimpy photo shot for GQ..
Katy is a Big hypocrite and should really stop talking about other people.
She hated on fart jokes? Ok, now she’s crossed the line!
She’s dead to me now.
Oooooh, good memory, I forgot about that. It is hypocritical!
She’s pretty much always insulting, isn’t she? Ugh. I’m almost sure she likes, no, LOVES the controversy.
Oh com on, it’s just a video. it’s fun, full of color and no sex and drugs. We have to stop this “dram everywhere” thing !!! Chill out a bit.
Uh, this video is camp, like a Vegas show. I’m surprised everyone here is so easily upset.
I am actually also insulted that the Egyptian culture is used in such cartoonish and goofy fashion lol there was an opportunity to do something really cool and sexy with this and…it was utterly flat and stupid.
That’s my take too.
Completely
I always saw right through her facade. She’s an entitled witch. I never thought she was sweet or whatnot. I can’t stand any part of her.
Have you ever given a thought how someone so tacky and stupid as Katy Perry could marry an actually intelligent person as Russell Brand? I mean, he’s not Monty Python of our generation, but he comes across as way more smart than KP. So either Katy is not that dumb as we all think or Russell was lust-blinded. I tend to believe the latter.
Yeah, the latter. Men with wandering dongs and average or higher intelligence like to nail down young, dumb women because they’re easier to lie to and the men can get away with more. In my limited worldview, of course.
@yennifer @Nerd Alert: Katy might be VERY intelligent but intelligence doesn’t inoculate yourself against stupidity.
Also, her lyrics smack of hubrism. Obviously John is wearing off on her and not in a good way.
Yes, hubris and stupidity. I will never forget the first time I heard Roar, and TBH I had no idea who was singing, but the lyrics seriously annoyed me. I hate-listened, and every other line is someone else’s famous words, lyrics, or a tired cliche:
bite my tongue; rock the boat; stood for nothing, fell for everything; eye of the tiger; floating like a butterfly, stinging like a bee; earned my stripes; I’m a champion; you held me down but I got up (a stretch, but still overused).
It’s all ripped off, which seriously is more offensive to me than anything else she’s done. Despite the fact that she ripped off well-known lines, that song is the stupidest I’ve heard in a long time.
@Nerd Alert: So far her music while in a relationship with John sucks badly. Roar was cringeworthy for the actual music tooas her lyrics weren’t the only cliched aspect of it.
I used to like Katy’s music — it was fun and upbeat. So far what I’ve heard just makes me want to shake my head and run in the other direction. Maybe we can start a petition for her to leave John and find someone who can creatively inspire her again. Minus the hubris and stupidity though, that’s key.
LOL looks like no need for a petition, eh LadySlippers? Maybe her next album will be good.
I like to pretend that Russell never married Katy. Russell is brilliant and funny, which I find sexy. What did he see in Katy? That must be some rhapsodic rack.
Can I have those three minutes back? Because wow… that was just TERRIBLE. Offensive to Muslims, yeah, obviously and terribly. But also frankly offensive to anyone with sight, hearing, or who blanked for a moment, clicked the link, watched the video, totally forgetting ahead of time how rage inducing her stupid videos can be (sadly, I’m in the last category).
And in a total outside of the point but still making me twitch category – can someone please explain to Katy that a Dark Horse if the outside chance. It’s the underdog. It’s the one who wins the race that no one could see winning ahead of time. Katy Perry, with money, massive wrack, and a weird desire to make any man she sleeps with her permanent house cat is NOT a dark horse. In the immortal words from one of the best movies ever “You Keep Using That Word, I Do Not Think It Means What You Think It Means”….
Small pedantic twitch I know, but seriously. It’s been making me itch for days while folks have been talking about this song.
Yes, this is yet another example of what Camilla Paglia in an essay last fall in Time magazine re miley cyrus explained as the artistic bankruptcy of much of pop music; shock for the sake of shock, or in this case or just lazy ham fisted crap like this. That this trick is still treated like a serious “artist” by many in the media shows how far in the tank they have fallen.
Her actions at the Moschino fashion show reveal what a classless inarticulate ass she always was and now money and fame have magnified.
Someone in the links comments yesterday compared the video to Lisa Frank stickers, and it was such a good observation!
I have to say that it is absolutely GREAT to see our old friend Olmec from Legends of the Hidden Temple has finally found some more work. I mean, he definitely looks like he has been hitting the plastic surgeon pretty hard, but good for him for finding a way to evolve. He really pulls off the lip syncing sphinx well.
Lol! My first thought! That and Lisa Frank obviously has a new job haha.
I can’t believe the designer didn’t just scrub her from the show. Any other model would’ve just been replaced.
Her face is busted. What’s the big deal about this girl?
Three things: Right boob, left boob, awesome star-maker machinery behind the curtain.
PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN!!!!
I always had the feeling this woman was an a$$hole underneath her cutesy act, it’s always nice to find out your a$$hole-radar is in good working order.
While Angelina Jolie works to promote peace between cultures, Katy Perry does this.
I was offended by the video (which looks absolutely cheap and tbh the song is horrendously boring). I think because before she melted the guy you couldn’t see the Allah necklace (you see another necklace) but when she melted him its suddenly right there and in plain view so I don’t put it down to a mistake. Ignorance really isn’t an excuse, she is a damn grown woman.
Buts what’s really irritating is when someone is offended by something you get *some* white people saying “oh, get over it” or an other one is “don’t pull the race card” like what??????? by showing your offence or pointing out discrimination you get people dismissing things by making it so trivial such as a ‘race card’ etc. I know im going off on a tangent but that’s what this reminded me of when looking at other peoples comments about get over it. Just because most Christians arent offended by things in pop culture that ridicules or uses their religious icons as props doesnt mean that other believers have to put up with it. Anyway, she is stupid and attention seeking so it doesn’t bother me really as Katy Perry is so irrelevant to me.
I know! You should see the top comments on dailyfail! They’re like “oh what don’t Muslims get offended about? You Muslims need to get over it, no one cares blah blah blah” It’s disturbing because they don’t even realize how bigoted they are.
I enjoyed her music video. It reminds me of the black jesus in Madonna’s ‘like a prayer’ music video. Muslims are too uptight. They need to join the rest of the world and realize that some of the best art is ‘offensive’.
As for this article, it speaks more to the writter’s personal dislike of Katy Perry more than anything else. I found myself laughing while reading through the writers grand and unsubstantiated account of Katy Perry’s track record of offending everyone she comes into contact with. Madam Butterfly offensive? I guess some people can take anything as offensive.
A final thought to all of the ‘offended’ parties offering Katy Perry advice… given that she holds the record for longest period of time for a song to be on the number one spot and that she is one of the most popular artists making music… I think she will keep doing what she is doing.
If she burned the Star of David, no one would say Jewish people are too uptight if they get offended. People would say Katy Perry was anti-Semitic & they’d be right. The thing with “art” is that if you’re trying to be controversial or make some kind of statement, you should do it with your own religion. Otherwise it just looks like you’re a bigot.
@Laila: People DO tell Jews that they are being too uptight when they experience anti-Semitism — even after Shoah/ the Holocaust. So your example, unfortunately, doesn’t work. It shows (to me) how little we use empathy.
However, I do agree (as stated up thread) that it looks better if you defame your own religion/religious symbols.
Katy Perry’s latest album is really awful. I could barely make it to 30 seconds on each song.
I love the video and I’m not a KP fan.
I think the offence was unintentional. Stylists don’t usually have a history or world religions scholarly background. How on earth were they supposed to know?
Sounds like some Mayer douchiness is rubbing off on Katy. Too bad. Her music doesn’t do much for me, but I always had the impression she was, at least, hardworking and professional. if she’s gonna pull off “bitchy diva superstar” she better stop candy-coating and bedazzling other people’s music, and do some work that matches the ‘tude.
Like most christianists, she found a better paying grift…….I can’t with her, she gets stuck in my craw!
ya’ll are so funny. That was slightly entertaining.
Robert that comment was not nice. Dont disrespect people. The guy in the video was wearing a necklace that had Gods name on it. Allah is the arabic word for God. She burned the guy wearing the necklace in the video. I think thats really inappropriate and uncalled for. If people are talking about it…then obviously the necklace is deliberately visible to the viewer. She just needs to apologize regardless if it was done deliberately or not. The fact of the matter is she offended a very large group of people. When u hurt someones feelings you should apologize. End of story.
Aphrodite in ancient Egypt? *facepalm*
My god, she is such an idiot.
Im moslem, so i am offended, yet i realize these might be not her fault entirely, stupidity maybe the biggest factor, the point is, we who got offended must voice our concern, so the ignorant can be illuminated. As we all know, the world consist mostly by the ignorant and the bigot, these are our concern right now.
I hope we all can exist in this planet fully understand with each other, and peace will come at last.
WOW – Almost none of you get it. Pure mob-mentality.
It’s not that the Muslim groups are ‘offended’ because of the pendent being incinerated.
They’re all pissed off it shows a woman being assertive, and DECIDING against a man … The pendant with the symbol of their god is destroyed in the process. It’s a woman making a CHOICE. In their community women don’t have any; they are less than men, in their culture. … Women more or less go with the guy they’re told to go with.
They’re intensely angry because the contents of the video are so anti-Sharia Law – which many of them (the loud and fanatical ones) they think all the world should live under — where women have no say, in things, can’t show their faces in public, and are literally second class people.
Agreed..but its sad how we have to bow down to terrorist in our country.
