Katie Holmes: ‘The number one thing is making sure my child feels loved’

Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes covers the April issue of Elle UK. I don’t know what she’s promoting, so I’ll just pretend she’s here to talk about her hot hookups with Jamie Foxx. No? Katie has four movies in post-production (including The Giver with Meryl Streep and Alex Skarsgard), but none of them are coming for a few months. That’s not to say that Katie doesn’t have things to discuss. She’s been chatting about how much she loves her new life. She’s was very visible at NYFW and may be angling for something in the fashion world.

Speaking of fashion, this story got buried (perhaps intentionally) during the madness of Oscar weekend. Katie Holmes and Jeanne Yang have officially ended their Holmes & Yang line. Page Six says the two women called it quits “due to interpersonal conflict” and because Jeanne wouldn’t tone her love of the spotlight. That’s really weird, right? I think people will more readily believe that the line ended because it was a budget-looking mess. Let’s do some Elle UK excerpts:

Divorce teaches lessons: “I think all of our experiences bring us to a greater understanding of ourselves and help us realise what is most important. That being said, I have three older sisters and one older brother and I went to an all-girls school, and have always been a fan of women. I support women and all experiences give you more insight into others, as well as yourself.”

Is she a feminist? “Ummm. I identify with women. I identify with people who work really hard. I think … I love strong women and I love strong men and I love being inspired by people who fight for what they believe in and work hard and are creative. And have integrity. I don’t think (the word feminism) is problematic.”

On make-up: “I was pretty lucky … I’m the youngest of five with three older sisters, so when I was a little girl, I spent a lot of the time in the bathroom just watching them. I was intrigued by make-up and my mum was very frank with us and said, ‘There are natural beauties in the world, but make-up enhances.'”

How she raises Suri: “Children are exposed to so much more than we were, I suppose every generation goes through that feeling, ‘Oh my God, it’s so different from how I grew up. I think the basics are very important: the number one thing is making sure my child feels loved. And good about herself. And that what she does and who she is, is special and important, and should be celebrated.’ And my mum always said, ‘No one loves you like your mother.’”

On Dawson’s Creek nostalgia: “The world has changed so much since then. Social media, and what people are watching. But I think innocence was one of the draws of the show. It was these kids going through first love and heartbreak and growing up and friendships changing. So I’m glad that the innocence still holds up.”

[From Elle UK]

The feminism stuff is interesting. I feel like Katie is trying not to say too much in response to those questions — maybe because she knows whatever she says will be dissected endlessly by the media. Katie plays it safe by talking more about Suri, and what she says on that topic is very true. Katie has risen from the Scientology ashes looking like an excellent mother who will do anything to save her child from a cult. And Tom? Who knows where Tom is right now.

Katie’s discussion of make-up makes me giggle a bit. She rarely wears makeup unless she has to do so. I’m the same way, so that’s not a dig. It’s just weird that Bobbi Brown hired Katie as “their face” when that face usually walks around NYC looking like she just left the gym.

The rest of the Elle UK shoot is pretty but uneventful. I’m including some photos of Katie looking surprisingly fashionable in a leather mini trench coat. She had lunch in NYC with a mystery man. Hmm.

    interesting…

“I relate to women”. No sh-t, Katie. I didn’t really like her answer to the question about feminism. Surely, as a woman, and as a mother of a little girl, the answer would be yes. I just feel like she circled around a definite answer a little bit. Makes me wonder if she knows what femininism is.

    • CF98 says:

Usually when someone hears the word feminist it has a negative connotation so I can see why she didn’t want to go there.

      • Dani2 says:

Feminism only has negative connotations if you don’t actually know what it means, what is so negative about the equality of the sexes? This is why I’m not upset about it because I know that her, like many of the Hollywood stars don’t take the time to educate themselves about stuff like this, all she did through that answer was to expose her ignorance. *shrug*

      • This is all new to me. Never ever in my life have I heard that the word ‘feminism’ has a “negative connotation”. I mean truly…I was raised by a mother who made me believe that feminism was the only option for us as women; anything less meant we didn’t care about how we were treated by men and how society at large perceives us.

Very shocked that the word is seen as “negative” to some.

…and yeah, Katie’s hesitation when being asked really irritated me. That being said, she looks gorgeous in all these photos–that coat with the beading is really cool..

        @CF98

Gotta learn to weed through that patriachal propaganda. It is in the nature of status quo to resist change. And dont be fooled by the women who cheer against feminism, the world is packed with coloborators and uncle Toms of all sorts. Trust me they are the first in line to claim the benefits of the very Movement they sneer at.

      • Diana says:

I prefer her answer over a dumb answer a la Miley Cyrus…

    • Lucy says:

I too wish she would have said yes. But yeah, maybe she doesn’t know what it means.

  3. Tiffany says:

I still believe that she knew what she was getting into with Tom. She saw fame, tons of money (seriously, she was a champ at Barney’s) and the fast track to A list ( meeting people who would have never known her name, international politicians) and a locked investor in her disaster of a fashion line.

Since she did not have a career as Mrs Tom Cruise, she will have one as the ex Mrs Tom Cruise. On that end, well played Katie. I cannot hate on you for that.

    • CF98 says:

      And yet you do

Except there’s a problem with your theory people conveniently ignore that she had a career before Tom. She was on a hit TV show and movies one of them Batman Begins which last I checked was a big movie(even if it was dull IMO)

Do I think being married to him raised her profile? Yes but I don’t believe that’s why she married the guy or brought a child into it either.

For someone people brand as a manipulative golddigger her actions don’t coincide with one. If all she wanted was fame and $$ she would’ve stayed with Tom. I mean really he ended his last two marriages. She also wouldn’t have sued for sole custody(and Tom relented no less) either if this was a mere business arrangement.

She doesn’t strike me as desperate compared to some of her peers.

      • bluhare says:

So you think she really loved him? And didn’t expect him to help her career?

I think she had a crush on him, and I also think she thought his pull would make her a huge star. It didn’t. She’s famous now, but her profile has more to do with her leaving him than him ever helping her. Because she certainly didn’t work much when she was married, although there were attempts.

      • Maggie says:

I’m going to go with bluhare on this. She’ll eventualy fade away.

      • mercy says:

I tend to believe she was impressed by him and his attention and didn’t take enough time to really get to know him before she got pregnant. It happens too often, unfortunately.

      • anne says:

And it was Tom who did not want to renew the contract? And it was decided in the pre-nup that Katie would ask for a divorce? And if Katie jumped off the boat (scientology, etc.) of what was agreed?

      • Tiffany :) says:

I tend to agree with Tiffany (and not just because of the name 😉 )
She was in Batman Returns, but she was awful and was replaced.

  4. Jaderu says:

I like her Carmen Sandiego get up in the last shot.

  5. Other Renee says:

Since the child has a wardrobe whose value could probably feed a small nation for a year, I’m guessing that yeah, she feels loved. 😉

  6. Original N says:

Wow, that cover might be the best I have seen her look! I know Photoshop was likely utilized but she looks so radiant (compared to the famous grey-hair-no-makeup photos taken prior to the separation) …

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

No great loss to the fashion world. That line was going nowhere.

    • Candy Love says:

I know right and the whole ( Jeanne wouldn’t tone her love of the spotlight ) the women was/is barley photograph 99% of people don’t know what she looks like, It’s not like she getting pap like Rachel Zoe.

It seems to me that Katie people put that out to cover up that the line suck and that Katie is not the fashion girl she wants us to believe she is. Not to mention that with out Tom no one was buying the clothes or butting them in their store.

  8. Dulcinea says:

Anyone else noticed she is wearing that same ugly thing that Sarah Jessica Parker wore on the cover of InStyle a few months back?

  9. Chicagogurl says:

I want a rainbow bright coat with fluffy clouds please!

  10. dorothy says:

I admire the fact that she saw the danger of Scientology and chose to get her and her child out of the situation, at great risk. In retrospect, it was a very brave thing to do. Crazy or not, the cult is powerful and dangerous and her and her family knew that. They planned her and Suri’s escape perfectly.

And that’s exactly what it was, an escape.

  11. Fan says:

Is she still with J. Fox?

    • Candy love says:

The real question is was she ever with Jamie Foxx. There seem to be a lot media talk with little to no proof that they were ever a couple which got Katie a lot of attention.

  12. ELJ says:

I relate to Katie in this article. I love make-up but only wear it on special occasions/nights out.

On the feminism comments- she and I are the same age, and especially with her having older sisters- we were adolescents in the riot grrrl era- Feminism was cool and positive. The cool older girls I looked up to embraced it, and so did I.

Unfortunately, that has been lost on a lot of younger women. I have gone back to school and I spend A LOT of time with early 20-somethings and it makes me sad that so many of them really don’t have an understanding of what feminism is- like they literally do not relate “I believe I am equal to a man” with being a feminist. I think she understands that a lot of these women are her fan base and they do not relate to the feminism and she wants to avoid alienating them but is trying to convey the message of feminism in a positive light.

    • mercy says:

More people who have a good understanding of what it means to be a feminist need to speak up and not be afraid of the word, imo.

  13. Sort of Agree says:

I think she speaks really, really carefully but is basically a grounded type of person. She can afford to loosen up a bit more in interviews and speak her mind much more.

  14. Nicole says:

I really think holmes and yang fell apart after that mess of a lawsuit Tom had. I think Yang was talking too much and Katie was told to cuts ties or else! #justsayin

    • Candy Love says:

I disagree I think the holmes and yang fell because for one it was over priced crap and two Tom funded the clothing line so when they split they could afford the line and no one was buying the clothes.

  15. DrFunkenstein says:

Man, that cover is so shopped I felt like I was looking at a Renaissance oil.
