Best news of the day: Fred Phelps died. Hate to be happy someone’s gone, but I am.

    • lunchcoma says:

I feel similarly. I’m trying to rephrase it as hoping that his group disintegrates and doesn’t cause anymore pain to people in the future, and that the young people in it can manage to break away from the cult-like atmosphere and find something else to do with their lives.

      • bluhare says:

I know it’s horrible, but I had a great visual of a gay protest (by gays not against them!) at his funeral.

        Bad bluhare

      • doofus says:

unfortunately, he was excommunicated a few years back for suggesting a less harsh stance on things and to be less hateful, so they’ll probably picket his funeral, too.

        (“they” being the WBC)

      • Tiffany :) says:

He was excommunicated in August 2013. Immortality became part of the beliefs of the church, that death was punishment for sinning.

I have a theory that perhaps he was excommincated because he was terminally ill, and the church saw that as a sign that he was a sinner. Living and dying by the sword…

    • Pants says:

Well, when they deserve peoples’ animosity towards them, it’s certainly hard to feel bad about it.

    • paola says:

      I’m sorry…. l know i sound ignorant but who’s the guy?

      *typing Fred Phelps on wikipedia*

      edit: Holy sheisser!

    • CG says:

I used to work for a news website and you should have seen the comments on the Jerry Falwell obituary when he died. It was all gleeful cackling and “see you in hell, Falwell!” So don’t feel bad! Lots of people (myself included) feel the same. The less hate in the world, the better!

      • bluhare says:

I feel guilty about it. I truly do not like to think ill of people, although I know that doesn’t come across very well in my commentary here on this site!

      • I was just about to ask what was so bad about Jerry Falwell (as I’ve never heard of him)–oh my. Not only is he freaking racist, but he’s also a hypocrite. The minute things started to turn around for Civil Rights, he completely back flipped.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      Good.

    • booboolarue says:

Right there with you on this one, sadly another arse will rise up to take his place.

    • MonicaQ says:

Well, that’s….I hope he’s found the judgement of the (g)od he believes in.

(That took all of my Buddhist powers combined to not say what I initially thought. It involved confetti.)

    • blue marie says:

I can’t say that I’m sorry to see him gone.

    • Miffy says:

George Takei put it beautifully on his Facebook page: ‘Today may he realise God hates no one… May he find the peace in death that so plainly eluded him in life.’

And that, my friends, is what pure unadulterated class sounds like!

I wish his hideous organisation would die with him but there’s plenty more hateful nut jobs to fill the void.

      • lucy2 says:

That is about the best thing you could say about someone like that.

      • Kiddo says:

Excellent, Miffy. And what can be said about the church is that they helped rally the opposition. Every time someone spews hatred so very loudly and unapologetically, it awakens the sense of fairness in others. Ying and yang, push and pull, balance and all that.

      • lucy2 says:

Good point kiddo. Many times WBC tried to protest a funeral, people would form a human wall to give the family the privacy and respect they deserved. That says so much more about humanity than a few nutcases spouting hatred.

      • Liberty says:

Thanks for posting this. Classy response from Takei, classier than I could have supplied for this hateful creep’s demise.

      • You know how bad the Westboros Church is??? Even the pastor at a church that my dad went to, who pretty much is against ANYTHING that is anti-God, (I’m talking gay rights, tattoos, piercings–he gets uncomfortable if someone with a piercing serves him food, unwed parents, etc), and HE thinks that they’re all crazy and hateful. HE thinks that, and he is one of those people who, if you aren’t on his side, then he really doesn’t care. That’s how bad that church is.

  2. Patricia says:

She’s very tall, it could take a while for her to show. I’m 5’9″ and have only started showing since last week which was 22 weeks for me. Let’s not scrutinize a pregnant lady please!

    • Cloud&feather says:

Congrats! Is this your first? I’m 5’2″ and with my first I only started showing after 20 weeks. not so with the second! lol

      • Patricia says:

Thank you! Yes it’s my first 🙂 I started out a bit overweight so that could be why it feels like I wasn’t showing, too. But people are starting to notice now and it’s getting harder for me to touch my toes lol.

    • mel says:

Oh yeah, I was about 22-24 weeks when I started showing with my first one. And she’s wearing a hoody.

My second one, I swear you could tell at 12 weeks.

    • Jh says:

Thank you! My sister is 5’10” and hardly showed at 7 months! Kind of an odd thing to speculate.

    • jjva says:

Yup! I’m six feet even and 26 weeks, and if I was wearing a hoodie, you couldn’t tell I was knocked up until about 16 weeks in. It’s my first, too — they say you show sooner with your second?

  3. call me cynical... says:

She sure looks pregnant to me. Look around her waist…that sweatshirt is pulled tight and there’s a definite baby bump! Usually she’s flat as a pancake.

    • Erinn says:

I can’t tell if it’s a bump, or something in the pocket of the hoodie. Time will tell.

  4. Mel M says:

Nooooo! The trailer for The Giver looks terrible, in terms of sticking to the book. Jonas is way to old and that clip at the end of him holding a baby must be from the end of the book where he takes his brother which is in the snow and only a few pages long. And I know it wouldn’t have made sense to film everything it black and white but that is something else that sticks with my and is unique about the story. When Jonas starts to see color. It just does not look like how I always pictured it, too futuristicy scifi. Sigh.

    • Candy Love says:

Never read the book so I came in with no prejudgment and I agree it looks really bad.

I get a Hunger Game/Divergent feel from it not sure if it has a similar type of plot or not but from the trailer that’s what I get.

      • Mel M says:

Exactly and that’s so not how I read the book and I’ve read it more than once. The feel is present day but utopian society. They ride bikes, play on playgrounds and go to thier jobs everyday. I always pictures it like a normal looking smaller town with brick buildings and sandboxes and such. Nothing like the feeling you get with the glass room they show the girl with Katie Homes in. It really bothers me that Jonas is played by what looks like a teenager, could they not find a decent 9 or 10 year old to play him? I don’t get it. I wonder how Lois Lowry feels about it.

    • cr says:

They did film parts of it in B/W, and the producer, Nikki Silver, reconfirmed in a tweet from yesterday that those scenes will be in the movie.

It is a a little more sci-fi/futuristic looking than I had imagined.

@Mel M: This is part of what Lois wrote on her blog last August:

“The filmmakers making THE GIVER are not obligated in any way to consult me. They own the rights to the movie and are working hard to make it the best one possible. But they have kindly invited me to peek at the inner workings, to give my opinions and suggestions. So last week I flew out to LA and spent two days doing just that (and upon returning to Maine have continued to do so through email).

It’s facsinating to watch the inner workings, the preliminary hard work that takes place before the cameras are ever turned on (as they will be in South Africa, where the movie is to be shot, in September). Set designs (spectacular)…in progress. Costume designs (fascinating)….in progress. Casting (impressive)…in progress. Script tweaking (endless)…in progress.

Yes, the boy Jonas will be older in the film than the book…as will his friends Asher and Fiona. Some readers are already annoyed (in some cases outraged) about that. Entertainment Tonight apparently says that I should be, too. I’m not. A book and a movie are not the same thing. A movie needs visual stuff, and action; and this is a laregly quiet and introspective book. In the film there will be things happening that are much more believable if an older teenager is doing them…the escape of the boy and the baby is much…what would the word be…bigger, vaster, harder. Epic…”

      She also visited the set.

That being said, it wasn’t a very good trailer.

      • Mel M says:

        @CR
Thanks for all of the info! It makes me feel a little but better but yeah, movies never end up doing a very good job when it’s based on a book and I think most who love a book end up hating the movie, although there are a few exceptions. It’s been happening a lot lately with books I really enjoyed, seems like that’s all Hollywood does now. I also have a soft spot for The Giver because it’s the first time I came across what is now my sons name and it stayed with me until he was born. He’s not named after the character but I’ve loved the name from the start.

    • islandwalker says:

It’s got Katie Holmes and Taylor Swift, what could possibly go wrong? Glad some of it is in B&W.

      • cr says:

Well, Taylor only filmed for two days, she’s Rosemary, so luckily she’s not in much at all.

And per a tweet from Lois Lowry:

        Lois Lowry ‏@LoisLowryWriter 20h
People are concerned/disappointed that the first movie trailer is in color. Early days, folks. Be patient! It is still in post-production.

Perhaps they’ll also CGI Alex’s eyes, since Father isn’t supposed to have light eyes. And Brenton Thwaites said they were going to CGI his eyes from brown to blue.

      • Candy Love says:

Like I said above didn’t read the book so the color vs black and white had no effect on my judgment . That trailer was just a mess I don’t think if it was in black and white it would have made a difference to me.

    • Canoki says:

I had the same reaction. This movie looks nothing like the book I was given as a child by a teacher to read. The book was haunting and made one think about the value pain and hurt has to ones life, this movie trailer looks like mindless noise and color.

  5. Tiffany :) says:

The story about the woman not being able to pump her milk at work is TERRIBLE!!! How can they expect her to have reserved the lactation room on her FIRST day back from maternity leave, if it takes 3 days of paperwork processing to book the room? I can’t believe they made her walk around with engorged breasts, told her she should be at home with her babies, and then handed her a piece of paper and suggested she resign? How is that possibly legal in the United States?

    • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Dang that sounds painful way to be on the receiving end of a power trip – it would have been interesting if she’d pumped in front of them since they were being such @ssholes.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I read an article that mentioned she had to take extra time off during her maternity leave, which was unpaid, because of complications. They also told her that no one did her work while she was out, and she had only 2 weeks to complete it all or she would be disiplined.

My theory is that they wanted to punish her for taking extra time away, and wanted to make it as difficult for her as possible upon her return.

    • LadySlippers says:

Oh Tiffany, in the US the law states ‘reasonable accommodations’ but we are not a female or family friendly country (we might think it but it’s just not so) so what you described sounds like other stories I’ve heard.

  6. Kim1 says:

Fred Phelps daughter has been in charge for awhile so Fred dying will have little effect on the protest They only have about dozen members now anyway.

  7. Stephanie says:

    She looks incredible! Great legs.

  8. Liberty says:

Actually, she looks fine and like she already dropped some major baby weight: George.

  9. Dreamyk says:

Lisa Rinna’s hair..what the hell is that on her head? Just NO. I’m all for big, long, fat curl hair coming back, but she just looks like she just escaped from an off-off-off Broadway “The Lion King” show.

  10. Miss M says:

Pregnant! Her gym clothes are always tight. The clothes in this set of photos are too loosen up.

  11. Selina says:

This is what a totally fit woman looks like in the early stages of pregnancy.

  12. bettyrose says:

Ugh that trailer for The Giver . . . I’m glad they were able to put together such a great cast for such a great book, but the trailer barely resembles the book. Also, the book pre dates the current dystopian craze and releasing it as a movie right now really does it a disservice.
