Is Chelsea Handler really a contender to replace Craig Ferguson on CBS?

Chelsea Handler tweeted this ^^ on Monday. Look at the photo closely. Note what she’s holding in her left hand. See the CBS “Eye”? Chelsea wants you to see that. She wants you to know that she has options. She wants you to know that even though she pimped herself to all the trade papers as a possible candidate to replace David Letterman, only to be rebuffed quickly when Stephen Colbert was named within a week, she wants you to know that she’s still up for bigger and better things. She wants you to know that she’s still talking to CBS. She wants you to know that she’s going network. How? How is it possible for a woman with Chelsea’s history to still be up for a potential network job? I don’t even know. But she is. She’s being discussed as a major contender to take over from Craig Ferguson. At least according to Chelsea:

The late night game of musical chairs is about to end — and David Letterman’s one-time protégé looks like he’ll be the one without a seat. CBS’ “Late Late Show” host Craig Ferguson has lost his champion — Letterman himself — and faces an uncertain future.

“He’s not exactly in the driver’s seat when it comes down to negotiating (a new deal),” a source close to Ferguson told The News.

Ferguson is not likely to be back when his current contract expires in June 2015, sources said. But that contract has a clause that pays him as much as $10 million if he did not get Letterman’s job when the legendary comic retired. This week, he learned he didn’t get the gig — it went to Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert. Executives at the network said Ferguson wasn’t even considered to replace Letterman because the focus of his talk show is “too narrow.” They are also disappointed that it never became a ratings smash.

Ferguson’s show is part of a unique deal Letterman worked out with CBS shortly after he started at “The Late Show” in 1993 when the network was desperate to negotiate a long-term extension with the gap-toothed funnyman. In what has been described as one of the most creative deals in television, CBS gave Letterman and his production company, Worldwide Pants, control of the 12:30 a.m. slot following “The Late Show.” With Letterman out of the picture next year, Ferguson is negotiating with CBS instead of Letterman’s production company as he has in the past. And CBS isn’t negotiating back.

Instead, the network is talking to Chelsea Handler, the host of “Chelsea Lately” on E!, sources said.

[From The NYDN]

If you’re telling me that Craig Ferguson is out, so be it. I never watch The Late Late Show anyway, although I do see the odd clip here and there and he seems like a perfectly nice late show host. But I’ll buy that he’s on the way out, and if so, I wish him luck.

As for Chelsea… I feel like this is just a blatant repeat of what happened just after Letterman announced his retirement. Chelsea really did go to all the trade papers to make sure that she made everyone’s short list for replacements. I kind of think that’s why CBS announced Colbert so quickly – they didn’t want Chelsea and her big mouth dominating any more news cycles. So, is she really in talks to replace Ferguson?

Chelsea Handler is not in the running for the 12:35 a.m. time slot, so says CBS. The current host of E! late-night talker Chelsea Lately posted an Instagram photo Monday of her with a packet of papers, one of which prominently featured the CBS logo, alluding to the fact that she was in the market for a new project at the broadcast network.

But CBS isn’t offering much insight into Handler’s cryptic post. After reports surfaced that Handler could be a successor to Craig Ferguson at the Late Late Show, the network issued an official statement regarding the matter.

“There are no discussions with Chelsea Handler regarding the network’s 12:30 late-night broadcast,” a CBS spokesperson said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Her meeting with CBS yesterday was a general meeting with our syndication group.”

Following the announcement that Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert would succeed David Letterman at the Late Show perch in 2015, CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler addressed the cloudy future of the 12:35 a.m. time period, which currently houses Ferguson’s Late Late Show. (Ferguson’s contract expires at the end of the year.)

“Craig is our 12:30 guy,” Tassler told THR. “We’ve been focused so intently on 11:30. We’re dealing with one hour of late-night at a time. We’ll have conversations about 12:30 very shortly. But our first order of business was to shore up 11:30.”

[From THR]

I feel like CBS is still being cagey, but I also think it’s kind of funny that someone over there really wants to shut down the Handler speculation completely. It would have been better if it was a named source, but still, it looks bad for Chelsea especially after all of her hustling. I hope all of the networks follow suit too – look at her history of racism and petty grudges, look at her history of bad-mouthing her employers. Do not give this woman a platform.

Yes do not give this closet racist a platform and if they do lets all march to change.org!

  2. Tatjana says:

Perfectly nice? Craig is by far THE BEST late night host in America. I hope he’s not going anywhere.

    • OhDear says:

You can tell he really has fun with his show. He’s wonderful.

    • PunkyMomma says:

Craig Ferguson is not only one of the wittiest late night hosts, but he is probably the most intelligent, maybe falling second to Colbert. Ferguson’s stand up lasted two and one half hours and was, without a doubt, the funniest comedy show I’ve ever seen.

Handler is a poseur. She knows it and so do the network bigwigs. Her shtick is basically bullying and shock, something that wears out it’s welcome rather fast.

    • reba says:

He’s hilarious !!! Love him, love him, love him !!!
His skeleton robot sidekick, Geoff, used to say only one word: Balls !!
I mean, who has a (gay) skeleton robot sidekick?? Only a comic genius!

    • blue marie says:

      I don’t think he’s being given much of a choice though. I

    • Adrien says:

I’ve always loved his guy ever since I saw the criminally underrated film, The Big Tease. I never get tired watching that movie.

    • gg says:

I really like Craig Ferguson as an actor, love him as a person. He seems like a really good guy. But I’ve tried to watch his show and he just stands around giggling at nothing in his “monologue”. Maybe because it’s unscripted? Methinks he really really needs a script. Unwatchable to me.

    • L says:

Craig is hilarious and does great interviews. I get why he didn’t get the tonight show (he’s said several times in the past he didn’t want it), but if they are thinking of replacing him with Chelsea Handler…..Just stupid and not long term thinking.

    • kri says:

I love Craig. His late night show is the only one I like. He’s so witty and delicious.

  3. Talie says:

I feel bad for Ferguson, but like you said, his show has no “must see” factor. Even his clips don’t pick up steam — Chelsea is good at courting some controversy and viral publicity.

  4. Dani2 says:

    Ugh, please no.

    • Chelsea has the charm of an old, discarded toilet seat.
She’s not a worthy replacement, not in the slightest.

      • mimif says:

The upholstered seats with stuffing that peeks through the cracks after decades of use.

      • blue marie says:

aww man, it’s been awhile since my @ss hit one of those, the ones that pinch when you go to get up.. it’s donkey balls.

      • Oh my god..I just laughed so hard @ “donkey balls”.

My grandparents had one of those toilet seats and it always bugged me (much like Chelsea bugs me, come to think of it). Like, I don’t wanna get too comfy while I’m on a toilet, you know, I’m not trying to “sink in”…

  5. aims says:

I really like Craig. I’d be bummed out if he’s gone.

  6. FingerBinger says:

*Shrugs* Clearly she has an audience. People are watching her show and buying her books.

    • That audience has clearly jumped ship–being that she isn’t getting her show/contract renewed. Plus she couldn’t have had much of an audience if the only reason she got her contract in the first place was sleeping with the President of E! network.

    • boopti says:

‘Fingerbinger,’ that’s one low bar you got there. A lot of people also watch Brandi Glanville’s show and buy her books (NYT best seller) – shall we install her on a network latenight tv show too?

  7. lower-case deb says:

replacing someone with great intellect, humor and sensitivity with the exact opposite?

the year of living dangerously, CBS!

  8. Jen says:

Craig is the best late night host on tv. But I’m happier that he doesn’t have to abandon his lovely, fun, nice, etc etc etc demeanor to become some schtick hack.

    • Maria says:

      I feel the same way.

I rather enjoy his brand of humor and his interviews are so much fun, plus, he won a damn Peabody award!

      Handler is a huge downgrade.

I’d love for Ferguson to get an HBO or Comedy Central show, he’s never given into the late night formula-that’s what makes it work.

  9. Bridget says:

Ha! That was Lohan-level try hard.

  10. Shiksa Goddess says:

Chelsea hasn’t been funny since 2007.

  11. samanthalous says:

Yay more Angelina bashing (not). Also no way this woman is in her 30’s or early 40’s as she claims.

  12. K says:

Ferguson is completely brilliant. This is a travesty.

  13. lucy2 says:

I have to laugh that CBS shot her rumors down so quickly, TWICE. I really think she’s trying hard to make everyone think she’s in demand, but if they’ve seen her act, I can’t see any network wanting to touch her with a 10′ pole.

Craig is the BEST. He’s hilarious, intelligent, and seems like a genuinely nice guy, but not a kiss ass in any way. He might not have clips that go viral, but his is the one network late night show I actually watch in whole. CBS would be a fool to let him go, I hope if they do make a change it’s because he wants to move on to something else, not because they’re pushing him out.

  14. Maya says:

I love the fact that the channel shut down any rumours about Chelsea joining them. They know that they will lose public respect, viewers if they have her a job. Many people have realised what a vile creature Chelsea is with her racist remarks, attacking children, bitching about other women for no apparent reason and she has been losing viewers on a daily basis.

All of her signing with CAA and becoming Jennifer Aniston’s mouthpiece against the Jolie-Pitts, creating showbusiness friendships with other CAA women have all come to nothing.

Bad things happen to bad people and that is what is happening now and Chelsea knows it. Hence the reason she is selling herself to the public desperately with her constant fake rumours leak to gain attention.

  15. Luca26 says:

She so isn’t CBS. She obviously had connections and can get meetings but she’s off brand.
    This reeks of desperation.

  16. Anon says:

I hope Ferguson will not be replaced. While I have only watched a couple episodes of his Late late show, it was funny. I feel bad for him that he was passed over for the Letterman gig and now this speculation.

If Feguson is replaced, hopefully it will not be the unfunny Chelsea Handler.

    • Dutch says:

Unfortunately for Ferguson, when you say you don’t want something enough times, people will believe you. He’s been saying he doesn’t want to replace Letterman since Conan’s aborted attempt to replace Leno. Bumping him from the Late Late Show makes sense because CBS can both get more mileage out of a totally revamped late night lineup and it can keep the production benefits for itself.

I can see where Handler would be on the list of replacements if just because she has a built-in audience (due to her book sales). However, I can’t believe that she appeals to the “insomniacs and drunken college students” demographic you are courting in the 12:30 time slot.

  17. Hiddles forever says:

Please can someone at CBS get hold of Handler, then locking her up in any of their rooms… and throwing away the key, if possible.
I don’t get why this woman still gets some work!!

  18. Schwizzle says:

I like chelsea, but heavens noooooooooooo. Craig is far superior. I’ll be sad if he’s gone.

  19. Another opinion says:

By no means am I a fan of Craig Ferguson’s Late Late Show. I have only watched it a couple times but it was a funny enjoyable show… I just prefer Colbert and Conan. I feel bad for ferguson with all this speculation and being passed over for the Letterman gig. I just hope Ferguson isn’t replaced.

  20. Hautie says:

I was shocked that Craig Ferguson was dragged into the new PR try-hard game of Chelsea’s. I had not seen any mention that he would not be continuing with his show.

That is till CBS quickly named Colbert as the new host of Late Night.

Then suddenly she attempting to rub her stinky ass all over someone else’s show.

I just can’t image that CBS would even be in talks with her, for anything, that demands her actually being on air. CBS is so geared towards NOT having crazy hate fill folks, on air with their shows.

Or this is just her new manager (Irving Azoff) making sure… that he can keep her name out there. Praying for a miracle to happen.

    • Tippy says:

If I understand the timeline correctly, Handler began speaking with CBS immediately after declaring that she wouldn’t renew Chelsea Lately and prior to Letterman’s retirement announcement.

  21. Tiffany says:

Craig Ferguson is on my forever dong list after his fantastic interview with Archbishop Desmond Tutu years ago. That was worth staying up past my bedtime for. He might not be a ratings powerhouse but it got CBS a friggin Peabody. Move him to 11:35, right after Letterman. I am sure it would pick up steam.

    • LadySlippers says:

Craig is very funny. He’s not on my forever dong list BUT if he ended up naked (unmarried) and in my bed I’d not throw him out. I’ll bet he’s fun as h*ll in bed too!!! Okay…maybe I should be rethinking my forever dong list….

      • PunkyMomma says:

Several years back, Larry King interviewed Craig on King’s CNN show. While discussing Ferguson’s Scottish heritage, King asked Ferguson what a Scotsman really wore under his kilt, and Ferguson replied, “on a really, good day, lipstick”. King looked like he pizzed his diaper right then and there. A classic comedy moment.

      • LadySlippers says:

        O.M.G.

        That’s awesome!

  22. Sam H x says:

Nooooooooooooooooo!!! I absolutely love Craig Ferguson, he’s so sharp, witty and intelligent as a talk show host. His monologues, segments and interviews have me in stitches. His interviews with celebrities seem more like casual chats than interviews plugging something. The celebrities always look like there having a ball and genuinely enjoying themselves.

  23. jgb979 says:

I hope that shennanigans………..like a relationship with a higher up executive….aren’t the deciding factor in this.

She was getting paid NINE MILLION DOLLARS a year to bring in a half million viewers to E!. I think Lindsay on OWN premiered with better numbers. I’m also pretty sure Joel McHale only gets paid 2 million and his version of the Soup has been on E! for a decade.

There’s no more deserving person in Hollywood due for a complete crash and burn

  24. Candy Love says:

I think it’s hilarious that CBS keeps shuting down any rumours.

It only proves that despite what her manager saying she has all these offers she has none.

  25. Boxy Lady says:

This seems off to me. Craig’s show probably would not work in an hour earlier time slot. Part of his shtick is that CBS isn’t paying any of attention to him so he can just do what he wants. However Julie Chen always insists to Craig that she and her husband, the president of CBS, watch him all the time. Craig has also signed up to host a game show and he has a large international fanbase. Why would CBS get rid of him?

  26. CeltLady says:

Handler is crude, rude and vile.
Craig Ferguson is charming, sweet, funny, and smart as hell. Saw his stand-up show and it was freaking hilarious.
Handler needs to just go away.
If Craig is replaced, I hope that his $10 mil allows him to be picky about what work he does in the future, and maybe allow him to spend more time with his wife and kids.

  27. Cassie says:

Craig Ferguson is brilliant at what he does. His wry, intelligent sense of humor is unparalleled in the late night talk show broadcasts. (That bit his does with the Paul McCartney/Angela Lansbury photo STILL cracks me up and I just burst out laughing – and he’s been doing that for quite a few years!)

It would be a shame if CBS didn’t renew his contract. As others have stated above – he has a worldwide, international reach – something the others don’t seem to have.

  28. Lux says:

Wtf why would they replace Ferguson? He’s the best thing on late night! I’ll be so depressed if he gets cut.

  29. Ronnie says:

Ferguson grates me- his offbeat comments are not funny or smart. esp when he does the dirty old boy schtik. Suprised he’s so popular

  30. Theresa says:

Craig Ferguson is the funniest, smartest, most sincere late night host. Geoffrey is far superior to any other sidekick. Be nice to see Letterman show up on CRAIG’S show! I won’t stay up late to watch anyone else.

  31. John says:

Is the programme director looking for a 40-something, drunken, middle-aged side-lay to bad-mouth him once she has the job?
If not, I doubt it. She’s toxic.

  32. Jen says:

I like Craig Ferguson. I saw his monologue dedicated to his late father shortly after he passed. It was such a great piece of television and you really got a sense of who the guy was/is. Hopefully he keeps his job as, although i don’t see his show a lot, i liked a lot of what i’ve seen.

Craig Ferguson is so witty and intelligent. Geoff and Secretariat make the show. I will not watch anyone else!
